How much can they not get it?

As usual for a Sunday, I woke up this morning listening to Julian Worricker’s programme on Radio Five Live. Today, in place of the Five Live Report, was a one-off programme about “Blogging in the UK”. “Oh, that’ll be interesting,” I thought, so I stayed in bed and waited for it to come on. I […]

No sense of irony

Genuine caller on Radio Five Live this morning, in a discussion about good things that are British: “When you move to other countries you find out that all countries have the same problems, like immigration.”

User generated content doesn’t belong on the mainstream media

I’ve been thinking a bit recently about “citizen journalism” and its relationship with the mainstream media. “User generated content” is very trendy at the moment. I had expected that to happen, but it hasn’t turned out quite the way I expected it. Some people seem dead set on framing the whole issue as some kind […]

I can listen to Radio Five Live again!

Speaking of Victoria Derbyshire, what a relief it is to have her gone from the morning phone-in on Radio Five Live for the time being. Matthew Bannister is an absolute master compared to the annoying Derbyshire. He should be the permanent presenter, not a stand-in.

Magnus Magnusson

When I heard that Magnus Magnusson had died I was in the kitchen. I switched on the radio. It was Radio Five Live and they were discussing how much better Magnus Magnusson was at hosting Mastermind than Rubbish John Humphrys. (I didn’t realise at first why they were discussing this; I worked it out later.) […]

The world ended in 1966 for the Daily Express

I mentioned recently that I am a huge fan of the radio programme Up All Night. Every night on the programme a newspaper editor discusses what is going to be in the morning’s edition of his particular newspaper. Most of the editors do just that: explain what is going to be in the morning paper. […]

Freeview? Peeview more like!

five (that’s Channel Five to you and me) is set to take its first tentative steps into the world of multichannel with the launch of two new channels: five us (Five U.S.) and five life (not to be confused with Five Live). They’re both going to be launched on Freeview, which is good news, isn’t […]

Pods and Blogs blogs

BBC Radio Five Live’s ‘Up All Night’ programme has a weekly ‘Pods and Blogs‘ segment. For an hour every Tuesday morning they take a look at what is happening in the world of blogging, podcasting and citizen journalism. Being a bit of a nightowl, I often catch it. It is a great segment. It really […]

Action on quiz channels at last!

I’ve heard this on Radio Five Live’s bulletins at 1 o’clock and 2 o’clock, but strangely I haven’t found any mention of this on the internet at all. The offices of Big Game TV have been raided. Apparently it is alleged that at certain times callers had no chance of getting through. I am shocked. […]
