Lame new words spread on the internet like a rashr

The internet is said to have made a lot of people’s jobs more difficult. Record company bosses, for instance. Or insurance companies. Or publishers. Surely another should be added to the list: lexicographers. I was thinking the other day about how quickly new words enter everyday vocabulary. Before the internet, language evolved slowly and often […]

Facebook apps are revealing their potential

Sorry about my absence over the weekend. I was here all along. In fact, I was here more than usual. It was one of the least busy weekends I’ve had in a while. But I somehow misplaced my blogging mojo and I was distracted by other things. Other things like my latest internet addiction, Scrabulous! […]

Why do those social bookmarking links exist?

There is a fixture of the modern web that I really don’t understand. And in terms of annoyance it is probably second only to Snap Preview. Millions of links to social bookmarking websites littering the bottom of every news article and blog post written. You know the ones. “Digg this!” “Send to del.icio.us!” “Pimp-me-do to […]

Phone help needed

Despite my frightening net addiction and general interest in techy stuff, I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to mobile phones. I got my first phone only three years ago, which probably made me among the last ½% in the country. I have only owned two phones, including the one I currently […]

No time to stand in a queue

Have I been writing too much about queues? The good folks at Standinaqueue must think I’m encroaching on their territory too much, for which I apologise. But if there were to be a blog that was the opposite of Standinaqueue — a blog dedicated to avoiding queues at all costs — I think they should […]

Orkut

Perhaps against my better judgement, I have signed up to Orkut. There are an awful lot of questions they ask you to answer. I’m not sure that I like it. The design is rank, although thankfully not as bad as MySpace. Oh well. Facebook is still my favourite social network.

O MySpace / Why do I have / To be such a / n Idiot?

Facebook / MySpace bumhole alert: After [Jenny] Thompson created a MySpace page two years ago, she found herself sifting through dozens of requests daily from would-be acquaintances seeking to link to her page. By early this year, she’d amassed 4,000 such “friends,” most of them strangers. Many flooded her page with remarks like “omg” — […]

Facebook fuss part umpteen: students are dum-dums

The latest round of Facebook numbskullery comes from none other than Edinburgh’s Student newspaper. Now, a few people have tried to persuade me to write for it, what with me having this blog and being a student at Edinburgh University and all. But it isn’t something that I could be proud of. Reading the Student […]

You realise that everybody can read that?

I guess people are just really stupid. Time for people to wise up about the web. It’s dead easy. If you post something on the internet, people can see it. That means: authority figures, parents, current employers, potential future employers, everybody. Top Law Student (down at the moment; mirror here) has a post reminding you […]
