Now Birmingham

Fingers crossed this isn’t too serious.

According to what they said on the radio, there was a controlled explosion earlier on which is unrelated to the evacuation. And it’s all apparently unrelated to what happened in London on Thursday. They’ve been talking about it on the news channels, but it isn’t dominating the schedules, which suggests that things are at least under control. Maybe it’s just post-London jitters, but it’s better to be safe than sorry I guess.

20,000 people is a lot of people to evacuate though, isn’t it?

Update: That news story has been updated since I wrote that post:

Officers now believe that the item destroyed on the vehicle, in Corporation Street, had not posed a threat.

I don’t know if this is true or not, but I was told that McDonald’s in Kirkcaldy had to be evacuated the other day because of a suspicious package. It turned out to be a burger.

  1. I think Brum’s population is about a million, plus there are the Black Country lot who routinely discard Wolverhampton on a Saturday night; and if you’d ever tried to get served at one of the city centre pubs at the weekend, you’d know that 20,000 ain’t that many 🙂

  2. Quote: “…because of a suspicious package. It turned out to be a burger.”

The sheer irony of it! 😛

    Suspicious indeed.

  3. I think it was a discarded handbag, or rather, BBC News thinks that. What a day to throw away a handbag….
