Who to replace Wallace?

When I heard on the radio this morning that Jim Wallace was standing down as leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, I tried to think of who could replace him. Infact, I was trying to think of any other Lib Dem MSPs.

“Malcolm Bruce!,” I thought. Nope, he’s an MP. The Lib Dems have plenty of talented Scottish representatives — Menzies Campbell and Charles Kennedy instantly spring in to mind. They’re all in Westminster though!

Everybody is saying that Nicol Stephen is the favourite to replace Wallace. I had heard of him, and I knew he was high-profile, but I wouldn’t have been able to tell you that he was transport minister, or indeed a Liberal Democrat. I certainly wouldn’t recognise him in the street…

My mother said, if Nicol Stephen becomes the leader of the Scottish Lib Dems, people might get our own name right. Fat chance!

Update: Hamish Mac has his take on it.
