Geraldine at mad musings of me has a post about Steve Reich.
Steve Reich was probably the first ‘classical’ composer I was into. I own two CDs of his – Drumming and Music for 18 Musicians. And just how do you describe it? Hypnotic, relentless, organic, seemingly never-ending, this piece pulses and swirls round your head. It seems repetitive, but actually it’s constantly changing. The piece has no composer, so, cunningly, a vibraphone (my favourite instrument, incidentally) is used to communicate with the musicians. It sounds like a tough job for all the musicians involved, especially the wind players and the vocallists. I just don’t know how they do it – incredible stuff.
Next on my Reich list is Triple Quartet. I heard it on the radio a while ago, and it is fantastic.
