			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most worrying trends in F1 is the increasing tendency of wheels and tyres to come loose and fly off. Since refuelling was banned for the start of the 2010 season, the speed of tyre changes has become easily the most crucial element of a pitstop. With the greater number of pitstops this year as a result of the current deliberately dodgy tyres, this has become even more critical.</p>
<p>During the Chinese Grand Prix we saw Jaime Alguersuari&#8217;s right rear wheel roll itself off the car soon after a pitstop. It flew off towards marshals, photographers and other bystanders, while Vitantonio Liuzzi took to the inside to avoiding being hit while he passed the stricken Toro Rosso.</p>
<p>Top F1 journalist <a href="http://adamcooperf1.com/">Adam Cooper</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/adamcooperf1/status/59610414425710593">reported on Twitter</a> that the wheel came dangerously to hitting him:</p>

<p>For me, loose wheels are easily the most dangerous thing in F1 today. When two marshals died in he space of a few races just over a decade ago, they were both as a result of flying wheels. Stronger wheel tethers were introduced after those incidents, but these do no good if the wheel is not properly attached to the car in the first place.</p>
<p>With the emphasis on tyre changes now at the very forefront of every race, it is no surprise that teams have been looking to save time in this area. Mercedes have been particularly inventive, developing a <a href="http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/those-mercedes-wheel-rims-an-update/">wheel nut</a> that is <a href="http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/mercedes-to-use-nascar-pitstop-tech/">attached to the wheel itself</a>.</p>
<p>But there have been lot of wheels coming off since the start of 2010, clearly as a result of not having been attached properly in the first place. Robert Kubica&#8217;s wheel detached after a few laps of the Japanese Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Mercedes also had a few wheel failures last year. Among these was the truly scary moment in Hungary when Nico Rosberg&#8217;s wheel came off the pitlane, causing all sorts of havoc as it bounced and rolled around while several dozen mechanics were busy working.</p>
<p>It is high time this was nipped in the bud. I am sure the teams would take more care in their pitstops if a real penalty was applied. This isn&#8217;t a sporting issue. It is a safety issue, and any teams that are not attaching wheels securely enough should face a ban.</p>
<p>Flying wheels are not just putting drivers at risk. They are putting marshalls and mechanics at risk. But worst of all they are putting spectators at risk.</p>
<p>Renault were suspended in 2009 after Fernando Alonso&#8217;s wheel came off in Hungary that year. However, the suspension was lifted. That was fine. Then, it was a one-off incident &#8212; in the refueling era there is little to suggest that Renault were cutting corners.</p>
<p>But today, the loose wheel problem is truly endemic. It must be stopped.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let me start off by pointing out that I would really like to see Paul di Resta do well in F1. It is always good to see fresh blood and I am a big fan of his cousin, Dario Franchitti.</p>
<p>But I have found Paul di Resta&#8217;s route into F1 curious. Why does Paul di Resta deserve to have a race seat when, for instance, Daniel Ricciardo doesn&#8217;t? Why, indeed, should he get the nod for a Force India race drive over the team&#8217;s reserve driver, Nico Hülkenberg who secured a pole position last year?</p>
<h3>Unconventional background</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta is coming into F1 having been in DTM for the past four years. There is no doubt he is a great racer &#8212; fools don&#8217;t win the DTM championship. But DTM is not known for ushering stars of the future into F1.</p>
<p>It is more well-known as a home for former F1 racers whose career is on the wane (Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard), former stars of the future who never quite made it into F1 (Gary Paffett) and drivers that specialise in racing touring cars.</p>
<p>One driver who has made the step from DTM to F1 is Christijan Albers. His F1 career lasted for two and a half years, largely without success. He was dropped by Spyker midway through 2007 after escaping from the pitlane with his fuel hose still attached proved to be a gaffe too far.</p>
<h3>Euro Series success</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta first attracted the attention of F1 bosses as a result of the success of another driver. Back in 2006, Paul di Resta competed for the Formula 3 Euroseries championship against Sebastian Vettel. Di Resta won.</p>
<p>But it was Vettel who managed to make the step up to Formula 1 the following season. Having already impressed as BMW&#8217;s third driver, and he stepped in for one race to deputise for Robert Kubica following the Pole&#8217;s huge crash in Canada. Later that year, he got a race drive for Toro Rosso, and it wasn&#8217;t long before he was being hailed as an &#8220;inevitable future world champion&#8221;.</p>
<p>As big wigs looked to Vettel&#8217;s route to F1, it was noticed by Mercedes bosses that he was beaten in F3 Euro Series by Paul di Resta. Mercedes resolved to line him up for a race seat, initially at McLaren. In the meantime, di Resta raced for Mercedes in DTM.</p>
<p>Attention switched to getting him a race seat at Force India in 2009. But progress was slow again as they opted to retain their existing lineup of Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella. Meanwhile, since buying the Brawn team, Mercedes focus has switched to having a German-only driver line-up.</p>
<p>In the run-up to 2010 the Paul di Resta hype was curiously quiet as Force India secured the services of Vitantonio Liuzzi instead. But as the season got going, it became increasingly clear that Force India wanted him to race in 2011.</p>
<p>But on what basis?</p>
<h3>Protracted junior career</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta&#8217;s protracted junior career may have set back his F1 career overall. Any comparisons with Sebastian Vettel based on F3 performances from five years ago are now irrelevant. Vettel now has a wealth of F1 experience that di Resta lacks.</p>
<p>At 24, Paul di Resta is relatively old for an F1 rookie these days. All of F1&#8242;s most successful drivers in recent years started their careers much earlier. Of the recent world champions, Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s first race was as a 19-year-old, as was Fernando Alonso&#8217;s. Jenson Button was 20, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher were 22. Kimi Räikkönen was 21, having made the leap directly from Formula Renault UK!</p>
<p>Paul di Resta is by no means too old to become an F1 rookie. But having a long &#8212; or indeed a successful &#8212; career in junior categories has not been shown to help create a great F1 driver.</p>
<p>All of the champions of the last decade progressed rapidly through the junior ranks. Vettel and Button made the leap straight from Formula 3. Hamilton efficiently strode up the ladder virtually one season at a time. Alonso had one season the Euro Open by Nissan (which today is World Series by Renault), and one season of Formula 3000 to his name.</p>
<p>Perhaps encouragingly for di Resta, Michael Schumacher for one raced more than just single-seaters before entering F1. Schumacher joined F1 after competing in the World Sportscar Championship. But he did not hang around there for four seasons, as di Resta has done in the DTM.</p>
<h3>Time will tell</h3>
<p>It remains to be seen whether or not Paul di Resta&#8217;s relatively unconventional route into F1 will pay off. There is, of course, no right or wrong way to go about a racing career. But I don&#8217;t see a great deal of evidence to suggest that di Resta will succeed in F1. I hope I&#8217;m wrong.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>All of a sudden, the complexion of the championship has changed. Just a few races ago, Fernando Alonso was one of the outsiders in the championship. As has been widely noted, when he declared himself capable of winning the championship at Silverstone a few races ago, his remarks were met with scepticism. He was, after all, a relatively distant fifth; 47 points away from the lead.</p>
<p>Now, after a Monza masterclass and a Singapore showcase, the Fernando-Ferrari package looks formidable. Alonso has the momentum, and has shot up into second place in the championship.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t just back-to-back wins. This is back-to-back wins on two circuits that are polar opposites of each other. Monza is a true low-downforce, high speed challenge. That was supposed to favour McLaren. Singapore is a circuit where teams apparently run with more downforce than they do in Monaco. That was supposed to favour Red Bull. Instead, Fernando Alonso was majestic in his Ferrari at both of these radically different circuits.</p>
<p>Much has been made of the fact that Alonso can also fully rely on the support of his team mate Felipe Massa, while both rival teams have both their drivers battling each other as well. But Alonso does not even need this support. Massa played no role in Alonso&#8217;s victory at Monza, and he wasn&#8217;t even in a position to assist in Singapore. Alonso is supreme &#8212; and that is what is making him the main contender now.</p>
<p>It is all the more amazing when you consider just how many mistakes Alonso was making earlier on in the season. It really was a case of unfulfilled potential at the midway point. There was the first corner incident at Melbourne. The jump start in China. The hugely costly practice crash at Monaco. Getting bogged down behind Petrov in Turkey. Botched overtaking attempts on Kubica and Liuzzi at Silverstone.</p>
<p>Ferrari were not having a great time either. The car has not always been competitive. Not so long ago Alonso was making negative comments about the pace of development at Ferrari, noting that it was much more relentless when he was at McLaren. Then there was the distraction of the team orders fiasco and the fallout that ensued. Yet now, Alonso is in the pound seats for the Championship.</p>
<h3>Red Bull&#8217;s challenge</h3>
<p>Red Bull have, all in all, looked like the strongest team all season. And although much has been made of their calamities, they have generally done a good job. More is made of their inability to convert front row starts into wins than is necessary. When there are 23 cars behind you, it is easy peasy for one or two of them to usurp you.</p>
<p>What is more notable is that Red Bull have had so many front row starts when the others just haven&#8217;t. And while the victories may have been a bit more evenly shared out, Red Bull have still be consistently up there, challenging all the way through the season while both Ferrari and McLaren have had peaks and troughs. Moreover, it has been abundantly clear that Red Bull have been innovating heavily throughout the season.</p>
<p>The fact is that Red Bull currently lead both championships. And while they have lost a bit of momentum recently, they are still the team that have the least to do in the remaining four (or three) races.</p>
<p>Has the tide turned against Red Bull? In one sense, no. Monza was always going to be their weakest circuit of the year &#8212; yet they still managed to finish 4th and 6th in the race. Not great, but not too bad either.</p>
<p>Red Bull&#8217;s biggest problem is not that <em>they</em> have lost momentum. They are still a formidable force, whether or not they have had to compromise on flexible wings and floors. No; Red Bull&#8217;s biggest problem is completely out of their hands.</p>
<h3>McLaren on the back foot</h3>
<p>Red Bull have to deal with the fact that essentially McLaren have faded into the background of the championship race. This means that the rewards are being split three ways rather than five. If Red Bull have a problem, it is Alonso who capitalises &#8212; full stop. Earlier in the season, it could have been either Alonso, Hamilton or Button. Not now that McLaren have essentially faded from view.</p>
<p>Spa and Monza were crunch races for McLaren, as the last two circuits in the calendar that truly suited their car. Neither race was perfect. Spa was not too worrying &#8212; Hamilton took a dominant win in arguably his most majestic display to date. Button was running well until his accident with Vettel.</p>
<p>But Monza must have rung alarm bells. Seemingly distracted by the decision over whether to run the F-duct, McLaren lost their grasp. Hamilton was rattled after his set-up disadvantaged him during qualifying. The team had to rely on Jenson Button to do the business at the front.</p>
<p>The problem is that Button has not looked like he has had the fire in his belly since some point in the season &#8212; maybe around Turkey? Button started the season with two victories in the first four races, but has not looked like winning since then.</p>
<p>Monza was a good chance. But in reality, it was clear all race long that Alonso has the superior pace, and there was nothing Button could do to avoid ceding the lead.</p>
<p>Hamilton, meanwhile, knocked himself out on lap one by getting involved in a needless accident &#8212; a scenario that was repeated in Singapore. While Alonso has been dominant and mesmerising, Hamilton has returned to his clumsy ways, misjudging a move for two races in a row. He has thrown away a shedload of points.</p>
<p>You have to question Hamilton&#8217;s mental state as we approach the end of the season. He was supposed to have shaken off these clumsy errors, but now he has only himself to blame for finding himself on the back foot.</p>
<p>Most worrying of all from McLaren&#8217;s standpoint is the fact that it doesn&#8217;t look like they know what to do to turn the tide. Since the failed upgrade package of Silverstone, McLaren have not been on great form.</p>
<p>It looks like Ferrari have won the development battle. The failure of experimental gearbox parts on Massa&#8217;s car in Singapore demonstrates that they are pushing very hard towards the end of the season. No wonder that all of his rivals now view Fernando Alonso as their number one threat.</p>

<h3>6. Force India</h3>
<p>Force India have come along way in the past couple of years. From being perennial tail-enders, they are now solid midfield runners and can regularly expect to beat the likes of Williams, BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso. Vijay Mallya has succeeded where Alex Schnaider and Spyker failed.</p>
<p>A question mark remains over the driver lineup. I still find Adrian Sutil rather unimpressive. In his fourth season, surely we should be seeing more. And Vitantonio Liuzzi, while showing flashes of excellence, has generally failed to live up to expectations.</p>
<p>Force India also need to be careful that their progress up the grid does not come to a shuddering halt, with a mass exodus of their technical team having occurred this year. James Key has moved to assist in Sauber&#8217;s resurrection, while Mike Gascoyne has poached some of his ex-Force India colleagues to join him at Lotus. Looking at the five teams that are ahead of Force India in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, it is difficult to see how they can make much more progress.</p>
<h3>5. Mercedes</h3>
<p>It hasn&#8217;t quite gone to plan for Mercedes. Seemingly fed up with McLaren, the manufacturer opted to buy the Brawn team that was so stunningly successful last season. Then, in a <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">crass marketing stunt</a>, they signed Michael Schumacher with much fanfare. Well, it&#8217;s all been a bit of a damp squib.</p>
<p>The car has not met up to expectations, and I have heard rumours that Ross Brawn is not too happy with the way Mercedes run the show (who knows if there is truth in that though).</p>
<p>For my money, Mercedes must have the worst driver line-up with the possible exception of Sauber. Nico Rosberg is relatively well rated. But let us face it &#8212; we all know there is still a question mark as to how good he <em>really</em> is. Meanwhile, it was clear to me from the very start that Michael Schumacher would be rusty, and his performances has fully justified my view.</p>
<p>It would have been much better for both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher if a more sensible driver was chosen. Schumacher could have kept his dignity in retirement; Rosberg could have learnt from a genuinely solid and reliable barometer. Someone like Nick Heidfeld, perhaps. Or, you know, Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello&#8230;</p>
<h3>4. Ferrari</h3>
<p>It has similarly come apart for Ferrari. Although they showed promise at the start of the season, with a win in Bahrain (even if they didn&#8217;t quite have the outright pace). But since then the story has been one of a slow but steady decline as the season has progressed, as Ferrari have failed to keep up the pace of development, and as the Championship has increasingly focussed on Red Bull and McLaren whose cars are far superior.</p>
<p>The drivers have to take their fair share of the blame too. Fernando Alonso has been making many more mistakes than usual, and he is not as enjoyable to watch as he used to be. A worrying development for the person I consider to be the best driver of the past decade. Meanwhile, after a relatively bright start in Bahrain, Felipe Massa has seemed off-colour for most of the season.</p>
<h3>3. Renault</h3>
<p>They may be fifth in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, and, yes, they have the fifth fastest car. But I have elevated Renault in my rankings because it is an astonishing comeback.</p>
<p>It is incredible to think that just a month ago, the Renault F1 Team was mired in the quite unsavoury scandal that became known as &#8216;crashgate&#8217;. Having lost its sponsors and its star driver in addition to its team principal and technical director, you would expect 2010 to be a rebuilding year for Renault.</p>
<p>But the rebuild was swift. The team has rebranded to focus on its racing heritage, feeling less like the team that descended from Benetton. It has a steady new boss in the shape of Eric Boullier, who I think is doing a fantastic job. And its new star driver, Robert Kubica, looks set to become the team&#8217;s long-term centrepiece.</p>
<p>Kubica is doing really well just now and seems happy &#8212; by his standards at least! Vitaly Petrov is a fair bit off his pace, but he has not disgraced himself in my view. It should be remembered that Petrov is the only rookie among even the midfield teams, never mind front-running teams &#8212; so he should be given a bit of room to breathe and develop.</p>
<h3>2. Red Bull</h3>
<p>Red Bull should be number 1 on this list. This ought to be their year. They came out this season with easily the fastest car. Their car is still easily the fastest car. They have two of the best drivers on the grid.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the last little bit &#8212; professionalism, cohesion, restraint &#8212; that takes all these ingredients and turns an operation into a championship winning Formula 1 team is missing. If it isn&#8217;t some kind of reliability problem, it is a strategy goof, or the mother of all mismanagements.</p>
<p>Just now, Red Bull remind me of where McLaren were at a few years ago. Unable to control team mates. Bizarre strategy calls. Constantly walking into traps that they set up for themselves. Somehow conspiring to hoof it over the bar in the face of an open goal.</p>
<p>The statistics illustrate it well. Out of ten races, Red Bull have had nine pole positions, but have had just five wins. They lag behind McLaren in both championships. For a team that has what is probably comfortably the quickest car, Red Bull have managed to immensely stuff it up so far.</p>
<h3>1. McLaren</h3>
<p>McLaren have not been without their troubles this season. At the start of the season, it was clear that their car was not as quick as they would have liked. But the way they are dealing with it is the opposite to Red Bull, and that signals to me that they have learnt a lot from their difficult period in the mid-2000s.</p>
<p>As with Ferrari, they were scuppered by poor tactics during qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, severely compromising their race. Yet they still salvaged a fair points haul. Jenson Button did the same again at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. Even when it goes wrong, McLaren sort it and get it right. McLaren is now more agile and astute in its strategy calls than it was two or three years ago.</p>
<p>Martin Whitmarsh has done an outstanding job to plug the few gaps in McLaren&#8217;s abilities that Ron Dennis left behind. Now McLaren are a formidable force that should never be underestimated.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s pace of development alone makes them stand head and shoulders above the rest. The high-profile failure of their new blown diffuser at Silverstone is only really notable because it is so unusual for a new McLaren part to go wrong. Other teams have this sort of difficulty all the time. Witness the various botched attempts to adopt the F-duct, another part of the McLaren package that makes it the best of 2010 so far.</p>
<p>Then there are the drivers, who are both on song. Despite various figures constantly trying to goad them into a bloody deathmatch, they appear to get on like a house on fire.</p>
<p>Witness the difference between the McLaren team mates and their Red Bull counterparts at Turkey. McLaren&#8217;s drivers had a misunderstanding, but instead of blabbing to the media or making silly hand gestures, the drivers sorted it out with a quick chat after the race. Very professional. Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s and Jenson Button&#8217;s approach is a very healthy approach to racing all round.</p>
<p>That is what makes them championship winners, and today&#8217;s championship leaders. That is why McLaren are still the best team, even when they don&#8217;t necessarily have the best car.</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t think there is much need to justify why I have placed Piquet at the bottom of the list. Suffice it to say that I hope he never races competitively again.</p>
<h3>24. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Sébastien Bourdais spent the 2008 season explaining that we should wait to judge him until the return of slicks in 2009. Slicks came in 2009. He has been duly judged.</p>
<h3>23. Romain Grosjean</h3>
<p>I feel a little bit sorry for Romain Grosjean. He was thrown into as difficult a situation as it is possible to imagine. Having done no testing whatsoever, he became Renault&#8217;s second driver just in time for a massive scandal involving Renault&#8217;s previous second driver to envelop the team. He didn&#8217;t perform very well, but they were exceptionally difficult circumstances in my view.</p>
<h3>22. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>I thought Nakajima did a good job in 2008, but 2009 was a huge disappointment. His main achievement of the season was to qualify an admittedly impressive 5th place for the British Grand Prix. However, his race was poor and he finished 11th. Way to hoof it over the bar.</p>
<h3>21. Jaime Alguersuari</h3>
<p>As with the other drivers who were expected to hit the ground running mid-season, Alguersuari was disadvantaged by the fact that he had done no testing. It may also be said that he was brought into F1 too quickly by the impatient Red Bull driver development juggernaut. While he was British F3 Champion of 2008, he was having a moderate season in World Series by Renault and may have befitted from some extra time to develop his skills away from the intense spotlight of F1. As a result, Alguersuari spent a lot of his time crashing or being rather unspectacular.</p>
<h3>20. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>I do wish Adrian Sutil could show us something &#8212; anything &#8212; that would once and for all conclude that he fully deserves a place in F1. He does show flashes of potential, but contrives to throw his chances away. He could have had a decent points finish in China if he had been more careful in the worsening weather conditions. And he has gained a reputation for being involved in a lot of needless crashes. His crash with Nick Heidfeld in Singapore following a needless spin was particularly unnecessary. This was made all the worse by the fact that he pulled off a frighteningly similar manoeuvre in Japan at the following race. His performance in Belgium looked poor in comparison with his team mate who battled for the win all race long. The main saving grace was a fourth place in Italy.</p>
<h3>19. Luca Badoer</h3>
<p>Yes, Luca Badoer was massively disappointing as the substitute for Felipe Massa at Ferrari. However, as I have written before, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">he had a harder job than anyone else</a> on the grid, being expected to become instantly competitive after 10 years away from racing. Given the circumstances, I think Luca Badoer performed quite admirably. It is not as though Fisichella could do much more in that Ferrari &#8212; and he didn&#8217;t have the excuse of being out of practice for a decade.</p>
<h3>18. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>I think Buemi did a decent job overall in 2009, although it&#8217;s difficult to remember any real stand-out moments. He should have another year in F1, but ought to show more in 2010 in order to justify his continued presence on the grid.</p>
<h3>17. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>2009 was another disappointing year for Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn was totally outclassed by his team mate all season long, and never looked like a driver who deserves to be driving for a team as good as McLaren. He seems competent enough, but clearly lacks the hunger and seems incapable of putting in a truly great performance.</p>
<h3>16. Vitantonio Liuzzi</h3>
<p>Liuzzi made his long-overdue return to the cockpit in a Force India this year. He did a great job at his first race back in Monza, but was slightly disappointing for the remainder of the season. 2010 will be a very important year for his career &#8212; it&#8217;s make or break time for Liuzzi.</p>
<h3>15. Kamui Kobayashi</h3>
<p>Kamui Kobayashi was notable for being the one rookie who grabbed your attention. He had only two races, but he made a huge impression on the F1 world. He was ballsy and aggressive, and provided some hugely entertaining racing, particularly against Jenson Button! The downside to this was that he overstepped the line once or twice, particularly when he caused a crash with Nakajima in Brazil. I also doubt whether the driver that races for Sauber in 2010 will show the same hunger. In these two races, Kobayashi had nothing to lose and so took the necessary risks. In 2010 it might all be very different.</p>
<h3>14. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>At the beginning of the season, Giancarlo Fisichella continued in the trajectory his career has generally taken &#8212; downwards. The season began ignominiously when he missed his pit box in Australia. There were even rumours that Force India were less than impressed, and were looking to replace him. Then came the rumours that Ferrari were looking to Fisichella as the replacement for the struggling Luca Badoer. Bang on cue, Fisichella put in one of the drives of his life. With his Force India car on song at Spa, he really should have won the race were it not for the kers of the Ferrari car he was about to step into. Once he&#8217;d secured his dream drive for Ferrari, it was back to business as usual as he lurched from disappointment to deeper disappointment.</p>
<h3>13. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>Robert Kubica was unable to shine this year in the difficult BMW car. Matters were not helped by his height, which was a major disadvantage when BMW tried to run with kers. He took a while to score his first points of the season, and was behind his team mate in the Drivers&#8217; Championship all year. The main consolation was a superb second place finish in Brazil. I hope that Renault can produce a good car for him next year &#8212; he deserves a better chance than this.</p>
<h3>12. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>It was a difficult year for Nick Heidfeld. The BMW car was a massive disappointment and it must have been quite a demoralising season for Nick Heidfeld. Nevertheless, he managed to grab a handful of points, including a second place in the curtailed Malaysian race. He also did a better job at scoring points than Robert Kubica. I deeply hope Heidfeld gets a drive for next season.</p>
<h3>11. Jarno Trulli</h3>
<p>For a long time, I have disliked Jarno Trulli. However, grudgingly, I have to admit that he did a fairly good job in 2009, despite the Toyota team&#8217;s best efforts to throw it all away. Two third place finishes near the start of the season reflected the performance of the car. But his second place in Japan was truly impressive.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This season never ceases to amaze me. The racing hasn&#8217;t always been the best, but the outcomes have seldom been predictable. At first, the utter dominance of Brawn, and Button in particular, was unbelievable. They were unstoppable, and it took longer for the other teams to catch up.</p>
<p>Then when the other teams caught up, it looked like Red Bull had the pound seats. But in fact the whole thing unravelled for Red Bull and we instead saw a run of six different drivers winning six different races. That hasn&#8217;t happened since 1985.</p>
<p>Throughout that period, Button had underperformed. And despite maintaining his Houdini-like grip on the Championship lead, he appeared on the back foot. He faced questions over how he was handling the pressure of fighting for the Championship, and lost his cool when asked a direct question about it by Ed Gorman of <i>The Times</i>.</p>
<p>He turned up at Monza apparently reinvigorated. It is said that he changed his approach. Instead of worrying about defending the Championship, he was thinking of it was a five race championship in which he had a 16 point head-start. His tail is now up again, and this weekend he was part of a great Brawn revival.</p>
<p>I have to confess that I didn&#8217;t predict Brawn doing well at Monza. After all, at Spa-Francorchaps, a circuit with similar characteristics, Brawn were stuck firmly in the midfield. But I guess the hard braking zones, coupled with the awesome power of the Mercedes engine, played straight into their hands.</p>
<p>It was a disciplined approach from Brawn, who shunned headline-grabbing table-topping throughout the weekend. They instead went for a one-stop strategy, which left them occupying row 3 of the grid, but played into their hands massively during the race.</p>
<p>The only problem for Jenson Button was the fact that it was Rubens Barrichello who won the race. But despite having his best race since Turkey, Button has only lost two points from his lead &#8212; which is more-or-less the same sort of drop he has had from most of the past six races.</p>
<p>At the same time, Red Bull had yet another disastrous weekend. Mark Webber&#8217;s race was over after a first-lap tangle with Robert Kubica through the tight Roggia chicane. Meanwhile, Vettel lacked pace and could only score one point. The chance of a Red Bull driver winning the Championship has significantly diminished. Vettel has a 26 point deficit with only four races to go.</p>
<p>However, the most noteworthy part of the race was probably when Lewis Hamilton crashed on the final lap while he was running in third. The odd thing about it is that there is no immediately apparent reason for the crash. It seems that Hamilton just pushed a bit too hard. He was certainly pushing very hard all race, but you have to wonder why he thought he had a chance of catching Button with so little of the race remaining.</p>
<p>Some people like the fact that Hamilton is an aggressive driver, and I agree that it is more fun to watch than a more conservative driver who might settle for third. But this kind of needless mistake is something that Hamilton is particularly prone to, and it is what, for me, stops him from being a truly great driver. He needs the maturity to realise when is the right time to be aggressive rather than the simple &#8220;always push hard&#8221; approach.</p>
<p>You look at a race weekend like this and it is no surprise that Mercedes appears to want to back Brawn rather than McLaren in future. The Mercedes engine was clearly the class of the field, and McLaren had the perfect opportunity to make it work for them.</p>
<p>Fuel-corrected, Heikki Kovalainen was fast enough to be on pole position. But he had a horrendous first lap, getting swallowed up by car after car, and losing four places when he really should have gained places because of his kers. Looking at his strategy, many tipped Kovalainen to win. But he looked very average during the race and could only finish 6th.</p>
<p>It further cements my view that Kovalainen is a driver who is simply unable to win. His one career victory was inherited after Massa&#8217;s engine blew. Fair enough, but he can&#8217;t race his way to the front. His underwhelming performance at Monza this year is very reminiscent of last year&#8217;s Italian Grand Prix. That was another one that Kovalainen should have won, but he was unable to challenge Sebastian Vettel in the Toro Rosso.</p>
<p>Oh, McLaren. If they&#8217;re not getting themselves embroiled in political scandals as a result of their overly complicated interpretations of the rules, they are messing up their strategy or making some awful error in the pitlane. As for their drivers, one is too aggressive for his own good and makes high-profile mistakes, while the other one is too slow to ever be in a position to make mistakes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s interesting to compare McLaren&#8217;s driver line-up with Brawn&#8217;s. The Brawn pair have both been written off in the past, yet this year they are the class of the field. Meanwhile, McLaren&#8217;s highly-rated drivers of moderate experience end up looking like the Chuckle Brothers in comparison. It seems like Mercedes&#8217;s shift in focus towards Brawn can&#8217;t come soon enough.</p>
<p>The other Mercedes-powered team, Force India, continued its good form from Spa-Francorchamps. I suppose on reflection Force India may have cause to be disappointed. On the back of Fisichella&#8217;s scintillating performance in Belgium, Sutil&#8217;s 4th place looks relatively subdued. Meanwhile, Liuzzi&#8217;s retirement with transmission failure while he was looking set for a solid result must count as a missed opportunity.</p>
<p>Mind you, how impressive was Liuzzi this weekend? Liuzzi is a star of the future of the past, having once been tipped for a drive at Ferrari while he impressed the world in F3000. But he ended up getting swallowed and spat out by the Red Bull driver development juggernaut, where he was <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/08/03/sebastien-bourdais-troubles-show-why-indycar-drivers-struggle-in-modern-f1/">messed about by the management</a>.</p>
<p>But it should be remembered that Liuzzi held his own against Sebastian Vettel while at Toro Rosso. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/03/vitantonio-liuzzi-the-forgotten-champion/">The talent is there but has been wasted</a> over the years. His performance at Monza surely cements his future at Force India or perhaps even a better team.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No-one can have failed to have spotted the irony. Giancarlo Fisichella has realised his childhood dream. Like any Italian driver, the opportunity to drive for Ferrari at all &#8212; never mind at Monza &#8212; is a real dream come true for Fisichella. But as with Luca Badoer, that dream has not quite gone to plan.</p>
<p>At least Badoer did not have a former team for him to compare. But Fisichella must have particularly mixed feelings as he struggles in his Ferrari while his former team Force India threatens to have the very fastest car in the pack.</p>
<p>A strong Force India showing at Monza was always on the cards. On the back of an excellent performance at Spa-Francorchamps, where Fisichella got pole position and finished 2nd, it was clear that Force India&#8217;s car was handy in a low downforce environment.</p>
<p>Force India were particularly bullish in the run-up to this race too. Knowing they may have had an advantage for Spa and Monza, Force India booked one of the few straight-line tests that are allowed per year for this week <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46780&#038;PO=46780">in order to maximise their advantage</a>. It also gave their new race driver, Vitantonio Liuzzi, a chance to familiarise himself with the car (albeit not on a racetrack).</p>
<p>Liuzzi will probably be driving the very same car that Fisichella excelled in at Spa. It is little surprise that he has hit the ground running, qualifying a solid 7th for his first race since 2007. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/03/vitantonio-liuzzi-the-forgotten-champion/">I have long felt that Liuzzi wasn&#8217;t given a proper chance</a> in F1, and it delights me to see that he may now get a prolonged spell at a stable team. There have been strong rumours for a while that Liuzzi had a 2010 race contract with Force India in the bag already.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Fisichella&#8217;s former team mate Adrian Sutil has his tail up, and appears to be adapting well to becoming Force India&#8217;s <i>de facto</i> team leader. He was probably fast enough to get pole position today but a mistake on his quick lap put paid to that notion. Nonetheless, Sutil must fancy his chances for a great result in the race, despite the fact that he is surrounded by kers-equipped cars on the grid.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Fisichella, having chosen to move to Ferrari, is struggling to adapt to his new car and qualified 14th on the grid. He must be scratching his head a bit over the fact that his old car is seven places in front, and his former team mate is a massive 12 places in front. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78566">Fisichella says he is far from unhappy</a>, and even takes pride from the fact that he helped develop that Force India to become a front-runner.</p>
<p>You certainly can&#8217;t blame him for deciding to move to Ferrari. Which would he prefer &#8212; a good result, or the chance to say he&#8217;s driven for Ferrari. He has three career wins already. Balancing the chance of getting a fourth victory in a Force India, or getting a moderate result for Ferrari, you can see even then why he might prefer the latter option.</p>
<p>What his performance so far this weekend shows you don&#8217;t have to have been out of racing for ten years to struggle to get to grips with the Ferrari F60. Yes, Badoer&#8217;s performances were not great, but <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">I felt very sorry for him</a> being expected to perform straight away in a car that is said to be difficult to drive.</p>
<p>Giancarlo Fisichella&#8217;s performance has not been quite as bad as Badoer&#8217;s. But given that he is fully race-fresh and fit, you would expect that. Fisichella will probably have expected to do better than this. It has been a slightly lacklustre weekend. He was 20th in both Friday Practice 2 and Saturday Practice. On Saturday he further underlined his difficulties by crashing at the Parabolica. Indeed, I found myself <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/09/12/twitter-updates-for-2009-09-12/">wondering what oh-so-hilarious nicknames</a> the journalists might like to come up with now that a different Ferrari is struggling at the back.</p>
<p>Following Badoer&#8217;s struggles in Valencia, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/ted-kravitz-the-european-gp-fr.html">Ted Kravitz revealed that the F60 may be a particularly tricky car to master</a>. The driver is required to do lots of hands-on switch-flicking and knob-twisting throughout the lap.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78495">This is also Fisichella&#8217;s explanation</a> for why switching to a Ferrari has not brought an immediate improvement in his pace as a driver.</p>
<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s a different car so there is different reaction going into the corners. You work much more with the steering wheel and the switches compared to Force India. With Force India I was just concentrating on the driving, here I am quite busy.</p></blockquote>
<p>As for his crash during Saturday Practice, that is said to be due to Fisichella adapting to the behaviour of the car under braking while it is harvesting its energy for kers. Kers was another worry that Fisichella did not have to deal with at Force India, but it is fundamental to the performance of the F60.</p>
<p>These insights about the Ferrari F60 remind me of the received wisdom about Ducati&#8217;s MotoGP bike. There are many parallels between Ferrari and Ducati, and this appears to be another one. The Ducati has long been famous for making previously-good riders look poor. Only Casey Stoner appears able to extract the full potential from it, while other Ducati riders tend to struggle to find any pace at all. The suggestion is that the Ducati is a very difficult bike to ride and that only Stoner has tamed it. Perhaps Felipe Massa had a similar magic with the Ferrari. (In yet another parallel, both Stoner and Massa are currently not racing in order to convalesce.)</p>
<p>The experience of watching drivers attempt to get to grips with a tricky car under the intense spotlight of a race weekend, rather than the relative privacy of a test session, has at least put a few myths to bed. Certainly, the idea that results are more down to the car than the driver was given a boost when Jenson Button seemed unable to stop winning at the beginning of this season. But it was dealt a blow when Luca Badoer stepped into the Ferrari, and finished last in Belgium when his team mate won.</p>
<p>Now we see Fisichella with his hands full and we are presented with a yet more complex picture. A driver needs to grow into his car. He needs to learn how to drive it and gain in confidence with it. It is also true that a car needs to suit a particular driver&#8217;s style. Arguably Badoer wasn&#8217;t given enough time to adapt, and Fisichella will need more leeway too. Here&#8217;s hoping the <i>tifosi</i> have patience with him if he is unable to score a good result during the race.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wow, a day certainly is a long time in F1. I am not sure when I will get round to actually writing about the Hungarian GP, though at least there is a long break until the next race.</p>
<p>But the big news this evening is that the next race will feature Michael Schumacher on the grid. He has been announced as the replacement for Felipe Massa while the Brazilian makes his recovery.</p>
<p>A lot of names have been bandied around over the past few days, and none of them seemed terribly lucky. Optimists suggested that Fernando Alonso or Robert Kubica might be able to get out of their current contracts to move to Ferrari mid-season.</p>
<p>Mirko Bortolotti was another driver on the radar. Last year&#8217;s Italian F3 champion has impressed in previous tests with Ferrari. He is currently building up his skills in Formula Two is widely tipped to have a bright future. But it is near enough unheard-of for Ferrari to hire a young rookie.</p>
<p>Some talked up the chances of David Coulthard or Anthony Davidson getting the role. That seemed a bit like pie in the sky thinking though.</p>
<p>The other drivers who currently have relationships with Ferrari are the team&#8217;s official test and reserve drivers, Marc Gené and Luca Badoer. But they were unlikely to step in for a whole host of reasons. Neither has a particularly strong track record as a race driver, although you can argue that neither ever had a decent opportunity to show their skills.</p>
<p>But their lack of fresh experience will have seriously counted against them. Gené last raced five years ago for Williams, and faced the ignominy of being replaced by Antônio Pizzonia for being too slow! Meanwhile, Luca Badoer hasn&#8217;t raced in F1 for <em>ten</em> years.</p>
<p>The last time Ferrari had to replace a driver midway through a season was when Michael Schumacher broke his legs at the 1999 British Grand Prix. Then, it was widely expected that Luca Badoer, as Ferrari&#8217;s test driver, would take his place. Instead, the Scuderia controversially overlooked him and hired Mika Salo.</p>
<p>It was a bad year for Badoer, who came close to finishing 4th for Minardi in that season&#8217;s European Grand Prix before his car broke down. He has never had an opportunity to score a World Championship point since.</p>

<p>Luca Badoer has held the test role at Ferrari for a staggering thirteen years without there ever being a sniff of a race drive. If he was overlooked in 1999, he was going to be overlooked today.</p>
<p>Now that testing is banned, it makes you wonder just what the point of a test driver is any more. I recently read that neither Marc Gené nor Luca Badoer have had any mileage whatsoever in this season&#8217;s Ferrari F60, in which case the advantage of selecting them over Michael Schumacher &#8212; who has loads more talent and, perhaps even more importantly, ocean loads of PR value &#8212; is non-existent.</p>
<p>This comes mere weeks after an elaborate re-arranging of deckchairs at Red Bull, as they apparently sought ways to replace Sébastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso without putting Brendon Hartley in the car. Up until the mid-season point, Hartley had been the official Red Bull reserve driver. But mere days before the reserve driver would actually be needed, he was replaced by Jaime Alguersuari.</p>
<p>Other drivers left twiddling their thumbs this year include: Pedro de la Rosa, Gary Paffett, Christian Klien, Romain Grosjean (though perhaps not for long), Adam Khan, Kamui Kobayashi, Nicolas Hülkenberg, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Anthony Davidson and Alexander Wurz.</p>
<p>If a team had to bring in a replacement driver, how many of these would be considered ready and able to race? Not many of them have much in the way of decent mileage of 2009&#8242;s cars. Who is to say, for instance, that McLaren would not rather stick Paul di Resta in their car over Pedro de la Rosa? Would Toyota happily give Kobayashi a seat, or would they prefer to take Nakajima?</p>
<p>Just a few years ago it looked like drivers could make a decent living out of being a test driver. Now they never get to test, and they&#8217;ll be lucky to get to race.</p>

But <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns21214.html">apparently it&#8217;s an &#8220;open secret&#8221;</a> that the Italian has a <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns21217.html">contract to race for the team</a> in 2010 and 2011.</p>
<p>I, for one, applaud this news. I have always been perplexed by the way Liuzzi was sidelined and shunned by all teams. That goes especially for Force India, who have possibly the two most easily-dropped drivers on the grid.</p>
<p>Giancarlo Fisichella &#8212; never the most exciting of drivers &#8212; is well into the waning phase of his career. Meanwhile, Adrian Sutil has precious little to show for his two full seasons, besides a one-off good run in Monaco which he partially attained by illegally overtaking under yellow flags. The only way you could construct a rustier partnership with current F1 drivers would be if you paired Rubens Barrichello with Nelsinho Piquet.</p>
<p>But why Liuzzi?, I hear you ask. Quite simply, he hasn&#8217;t had a proper chance to demonstrate his considerable talent in F1.</p>
<p>I say considerable talent, because that is what he has. Look back at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_International_Formula_3000_season">2004 Formula 3000 season</a>. Liuzzi was not only the last-ever F3000 Champion. He utterly dominated the field.</p>
<p>Granted, the field wasn&#8217;t the most exciting. The only other drivers to win a race that season were Enrico Toccacelo (whose career path fell off the edge of a cliff after that season), and Robert Doornbos and Patrick Friesacher, both of whom got a drive in F1 with disappointing results.</p>
<p>But someone who wins seven out of ten races and finishes second in two of the others in one of the most important feeder formulae needs to be seriously talented. Indeed, at one point he was supposedly destined for a role at Ferrari.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for him, he ended up getting tied up in the overly political world of the Red Bull driver development programme. In his first season as a Red Bull F1 driver, he was forced to share the seat with Christian Klien (another person whose career was left on the scrapheap). Even then, it was not exactly a fair share. He ended up racing just four times, as the Red Bull management clocked that having two drivers with limited experience was not as good as having one driver with solid experience.</p>
<p>For 2006, Liuzzi was offloaded to Toro Rosso where he partnered Scott Speed. It was the first year of the team&#8217;s existence, and an outdated and (deliberately) underpowered Cosworth engine did not help matters.</p>
<p>2007 should have been better, and things did begin to look up towards the end of the season. If we believe what we read, the atmosphere within the team was very political, and neither driver saw eye-to-eye with the management. Scott Speed left the team after allegedly being physically assaulted by team boss Franz Tost. After that, <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/motorSportsNews/idUKL2389326620070723">Speed came out and said</a> that Franz Tost and Gerhard Berger were &#8220;pushing like hell to get rid of me and Tonio.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Liuzzi, unlike Speed, saw out the season. He was partnered by a certain young Sebastian Vettel. Today people note what Vettel has gone on to achieve, and how Liuzzi&#8217;s performances in the same car show the Italian in a more favourable light &#8212; <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns21217.html">as the Grandprix.com article highlights</a>. This is perhaps slightly unfair. Vettel&#8217;s F1 career was just a few races old. By the end of 2007, Liuzzi had 39 races under his belt.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, you cannot avoid the fact that Liuzzi has not yet had a fair crack of the whip. He has never had decent machinery, nor has he ever had a favourable political environment to let him get on with the job.</p>
<p>Now his relatively large amount of experience would make him an ideal candidate for an F1 drive. This is especially the case now that (thanks to the ever-ingenious Max Mosley and the FIA) young drivers can&#8217;t get enough testing mileage to get proper experience before being thrown in at the deep end.</p>
<p>Tonio Liuzzi has played a canny move by taking part in the Speedcar series. Apparently his performances have turned heads. It certainly ensures that he won&#8217;t get race rusty.</p>
<p>I, for one, hope he makes it back into F1, if only for him to get a proper chance to show what he&#8217;s made of. A race seat at Force India is not exactly the Ferrari that seemed to be his destiny four or five years ago. It&#8217;s the least he deserves.</p>

This was precisely the outcome that I (and, I guess, most others) expected. So I assume we won&#8217;t see the same kind of fall-out that came when the penalty was originally handed out. But that doesn&#8217;t mean there won&#8217;t be questions asked.</p>
<p>First of all, I see the sense in a team being unable to appeal a drive-through penalty. After all, if a driver takes his drive-through during the race then he can obviously not appeal it because there is nothing you can do to undo the drive-through.</p>
<p>However, I have to wonder about the wisdom of awarding &#8220;drive-through penalties&#8221; after the race has finished. The concept is wholly nonsensical. Yes, it is an appropriate punishment to hand out during a race. But after a race it is obviously a non-existent punishment. The FIA gets round this by automatically converting such &#8220;drive-through penalties&#8221; into a 25 second time penalty. But this seems just silly. Why not call a spade a spade and admit what it is: a straightforward time penalty. Hamilton took no drive-through.</p>
<p>The current situation allows stewards to cowardly wait until after the race has finished (and the crowds have long gone) to change the result of the race and never be called up on it. Is it right that the stewards can twiddle their thumbs for two hours, re-write the classification sheet then drift off into the sunset? Or should there be a proper process that ensures that all time penalties handed out are justified?</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t an argument about whether or not Hamilton gained an advantage or not. I don&#8217;t want to go into that any more because it has been gone over countless times now. This is an argument about FIA accountability. Max Mosley may think he is oh-so-great to call those who believe that the FIA is biased against McLaren &#8220;<a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/?p=2029">stupid</a>&#8220;, but the fact is that the perception exists, it is widespread, and it spreads wider by the week. And the FIA is doing absolutely nothing to stop it. There is no accountability whatsoever. The stewards can fudge a race result, and the Court of Appeal can decline to make a proper decision about anything due to a technicality.</p>
<p>And it is a technicality that appears to be dispensable enough when the FIA isn&#8217;t ruling on a car that is red or silver. Part of McLaren&#8217;s argument that they were allowed to appeal drive-through / time penalty was that Vitantonio Liuzzi was allowed to appeal exactly the same punishment following last year&#8217;s Japanese Grand Prix.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/70772">McLaren&#8217;s lawyer pointed out</a> that in that instance Liuzzi was given a drive-through penalty after the race, just like Hamilton&#8217;s penalty after the Belgian GP. The decision was appealed with no discussion whatsoever as to its admissibility.</p>
<p>The FIA claimed that this instance was a &#8220;error&#8221;. The FIA&#8217;s legal department contacted McLaren to say that Tony Scott Andrews, who was chief steward at least year&#8217;s Japanese GP, acknowledged that he had made a mistake. But when McLaren double-checked this with Tony Scott Andrews himself, <a href="http://timesonline.typepad.com/formula_one/2008/09/sitting-in-cdg.html">the steward was apparently &#8220;outraged&#8221;</a>, calling the FIA&#8217;s allegations &#8220;grossly inaccurate and misleading&#8221;. Oh dear.</p>
<p>Here is what Ed Gorman from <i>The Times</i> notes:</p>
<blockquote><p>What on earth was the FIA up to? Why did they make such a big effort to discredit McLaren&#8217;s precedent, even misrepresenting Scott Andrews in the process, when their lawyer could have dealt with it in court? It certainly smells fishy but I suspect it will be no more than a sideshow and will not affect the overall findings.</p></blockquote>
<p>The FIA Court of Appeal may have made the predictable decision, even though it is quite a cowardly one. But there are still plenty of questions still to be answered regarding Charlie Whiting&#8217;s conduct, both <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/09/11/the-role-of-the-stewards/">during the Belgian GP itself</a> and with his misrepresented phone call to Tony Scott Andrews.</p>
<p>As far as I can see, there are two possible explanations as to what is going on. The first option is that the FIA is completely incompetent. The second option is that the FIA is completely corrupt. Doesn&#8217;t say much for the ability of Max Mosley to run the organisation, does it? And he claims he has so many people telling him to stay in the job? What a mess this sport has become.</p>
