One thing about the sale of The Scotsman is that nationalists have no excuses now. I think The Scotsman now once again counts as an official Scottish newspaper in their eyes (despite the fact that it always was anyway). So we now have a well-known Scottish-owned Scottish newspaper.

The news has woken up the blog Scottish Politics:

At this time of upheaval in Scotland’s newspapers it may be worth reiterating that there is no major newspaper which supports the SNP. Will this change? It could be that this would increase the circulation of whichever newspaper is brave enough to grasp the thistle. Thirty percent of the electorate is a large sector to consistently ignore and their enthusiasm for newspapers may be rekindled if they see a newspaper finally reflecting their views.

Who can remember The Scottish Standard? It brought “a breath of fresh air” — for about three weeks.

It didn’t take long — The Scottish Standard appears to be on its last legs, after only its sixth issue.

SCOTTISH Standard, the pro-independence weekly tabloid newspaper launched last month, has reportedly cut staff.

The latest casualty is understood to be its business editor, Nick Bibby… It is believed the editorial team now numbers five.

An insider said: “The atmosphere is bad and everyone is looking around for other jobs.”

The Standard’s initial print run was 50,000, but one insider claimed that had dropped “to below 20,000″.

David Farrer reckons it was wrong to bring it out on Wednesdays. I found that odd aswell. It might work for a news magazine like The Economist, but there’s surely no reason why people would change their newspaper habits for one day in the middle of the week to buy The Scottish Standard.
