			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is a surfeit of motor racing championships that aim to usher in the next generation of Formula 1 stars. But only a few are worth paying serious attention to.</p>
<h3>GP2 &#8212; the &#8216;official&#8217; way to progress to F1</h3>
<p>The most well-known by a long way is GP2. Backed by Bernie Ecclestone, GP2 is the closest thing there is to an &#8216;official&#8217; feeder series to the pinnacle of motorsport.</p>
<p>Since its inception in 2005, GP2 has been a stepping stone for some of F1&#8242;s biggest names. With a solid F1-style car and a unique status as the support race to almost every European grand prix (thereby giving drivers vital experience at many F1 circuits), there is no doubt that GP2 is a strong category.</p>
<h3>The main alternative: World Series by Renault</h3>
<p class="wide"><a href="http://www.worldseriesbyrenault.fr/"><img src="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/world-series-by-renault.gif" alt="World Series by Renault logo" title="world-series-by-renault" width="210" height="155" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5351 picture" /></a></p>
<p>But beyond the &#8216;official&#8217; routes to F1, World Series by Renault (sometimes known as Formula Renault 3.5) has established itself as a series to take seriously.</p>
<p>No fewer than 18 F1 drivers have raced in World Series by Renault or one of its earlier incarnations. Among them are Robert Kubica, Heikki Kovalainen and Kamui Kobayashi. In 1999, World Champion Fernando Alonso also won what was then the Euro Open by Nissan series.</p>
<p>Most impressively, in 2007 Sebastian Vettel was leading the championship when he became an F1 driver mid-season. We all know how that story ends.</p>
<h3>Strong drivers in World Series by Renault</h3>
<p>This year&#8217;s World Series by Renault field has some very strong drivers in the field. Two of the favourites for the championship, Daniel Ricciardo and Robert Wickens, are currently already F1 test drivers, for Toro Rosso and Virgin respectively. These drivers are so hotly tipped that both have been rumoured to become race drivers before this season is even finished. I will certainly eat my hat if they are not racing in F1 in 2012.</p>
<p>The pair put on a wet weather masterclass in <a href="http://youtu.be/HABa8ZC6HqU?t=3m48s">Race 1 at the Nürburgring</a> two weekends ago. In changeable conditions, they had the measure of the rest of the field while engaging in a tense battle for the lead.</p>
<p>The talent doesn&#8217;t end there. Other current F1 test drivers participating in World Series by Renault include Fairuz Fauzy and Jan Charouz (both for Renault F1).</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Jean-Eric Vergne is next in the queue behind Daniel Ricciardo in the Red Bull Young Driver sausage factory, and rightly so. His performances at Spa-Francorchamps were at times jaw-dropping.</p>
<p>Young Estonian Kevin Korjus (Race 2 winner at the Nürburgring) has also turned heads in his rookie World Series by Renault season.</p>
<h3>Scrappy driving in GP2</h3>
<p>When you compare it with this year&#8217;s GP2 field, the &#8216;official&#8217; feeder series seems to lack that edge slightly. No driver has managed to take full control of the championship &#8212; nor has anyone shown signs that they deserve to.</p>
<p>Romain Grosjean has come the closest. But you could argue that he ought to be. He is highly experienced compared to most of his competitors, and even has some F1 races under his belt. He is this year&#8217;s Giorgio Pantano. He has been involved in some questionable incidents. He managed to crash into his teammate at Barcelona. As if that wasn&#8217;t bad enough, he then climbed all over him as part of the truly farcical scenes in the qualifying session at Monaco.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the hotly-tipped Jules Bianchi (who is a Ferrari test driver) has been surprisingly clumsy, lurching from needless crash to avoidable gaffe. After a promising (albiet curtailed) GP2 Asia campaign last winter, Bianchi currently languishes in 15th in the championship, having managed to score points in just two of the eight races so far.</p>
<p>Giedo van der Garde has arguably been the most consistent, but still manages to make needless errors. In Valencia, he was penalised for overtaking under yellow flags.</p>
<p>Beyond this, it is difficult to see where the F1 stars of the future are in this year&#8217;s GP2 field.</p>
<h3>A good alternative for both viewers and drivers</h3>
<p>Moreover, the World Series by Renault season has been more action-packed for my money. This season&#8217;s calendar visits seven current Formula 1 venues, including some of the best circuits in the world. Spa, Monza, Silverstone and even Monaco all have slots in World Series by Renault. The calendar is refreshingly light on Tilke designs.</p>
<p>The Formula Renault 3.5 cars themselves are impressive, providing an ideal bridge between the well-established Formula Renault 2.0 cars. They typically run just a few seconds a lap slower than GP2 cars.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.worldseriesbyrenault.fr/en/tv_news/news/Pages/FormulaRenault352012thenextstep.aspx">From next season</a>, the car will step up a gear with a more powerful engine and greater downforce. But most eye-catching is the introduction DRS-style moveable aerodynamics. It could well be that the new Formula Renault 3.5 cars will prepare drivers for F1 better than a GP2 car can.</p>
<p>The combination of superb F1-style cars, excellent circuits and promising drivers is creating great entertainment. For me, it is <em>the</em> feeder series to watch.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s time to eat humble pie. Before the season began I wrote a couple of posts outlining my pessimism for the prospects of <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2011/03/21/has-force-india-peaked/">Force India</a> and their new driver <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2011/03/14/does-paul-di-resta-deserve-to-be-in-f1/">Paul di Resta</a>. I think it&#8217;s now fair to say that I was wrong on this!</p>
<p>The &#8220;midfield battle&#8221; for sixth place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship looks like being one of the tastiest of the year. Force India have shown themselves to be one of three strong contenders for this &#8220;best of the rest&#8221; position.</p>
<p>Each of the five teams above this sixth place battle have won at least one Championship in the previous five seasons. So the sixth place finisher can genuinely be proud of their achievement.</p>
<p>Although <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2011/04/18/what-do-williams-need-to-change/">Williams have disappointingly &#8212; but quite comprehensively &#8212; dropped out of this battle</a> (at least for the time being), each of Sauber, Toro Rosso and Force India have plenty of cause to be optimistic for the year ahead.</p>
<h3>Sauber</h3>
<p>Sauber&#8217;s success is as a result of a tasty mixture of a decent chassis, combined with two punchy drivers and a willingness to take strategic risks.</p>
<p>Who can fail to have been impressed by Sergio Pérez? In Australia he outsmarted everyone by managing to make the Pirelli tyres last much longer than everyone else. With a brave one stop strategy, Pérez took a hugely commendable seventh place. Never mind that the Saubers were disqualified due to a technical infringement. Pérez had put himself well and truly on the map.</p>
<p>His scrappy Chinese Grand Prix, in which he earned two drive-through penalties, demonstrated that he still has plenty to learn. I wouldn&#8217;t say he&#8217;s a star of the future in the Vettel mould. But as a Kobayashi-style midfield wunderkind, Pérez surely has a promising future ahead of him.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Kamui Kobayashi has been his usual feisty self. He collects a handful of points at a time while wowing the crowds with his audacious overtaking moves.</p>
<p>With James Key in place at Sauber, the team has come a long way since the darkness of winter 2009-2010. And you can only see that situation improving over time.</p>
<h3>Toro Rosso</h3>
<p>Toro Rosso have perplexed many by opting to retain its two drivers Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari. Particularly when you consider that the talented Daniel Ricciardo is  waiting in the wings, it is odd to offer Buemi a third  season.</p>
<p>Neither Buemi nor Alguersuari have been particularly impressive so far. Retaining them goes against the supposed concept of Toro Rosso has a driver development team, the final link in the Red Bull Junior Team sausage factory before being rubber-stamped to drive a bona fide Adrian Newey machine.</p>
<p>However, it has to be said they have done a commendable job so far this season. Toro Rosso clearly have a car with promise, with its radical sidepods paying dividends. When you consider that Toro Rosso weren&#8217;t even designing their own chassis a few years ago, this is pretty impressive.</p>
<p>A strong qualifying in China underlined the potential of the car, even if they didn&#8217;t quite have the race pace to keep grasp of the top ten positions. I thought Toro Rosso would run out of steam. In fact, if anything, they are getting stronger.</p>
<h3>Force India</h3>
<p>But I thought Force India would be even further behind. I thought they were a spent force. They started the 2010 season in a strong position, but after losing technical staff throughout the season they slipped further and further down the grid. I struggled to see where an upswing would come from.</p>
<p>Well, wherever it has come from, it is there for sure. OK, so their points finishes in Australia were inherited as a result of Sauber&#8217;s disqualifications. And the Chinese Grand Prix failed to yield any points.</p>
<p>But what is striking about Force India&#8217;s first three races is the sheer consistency of their performances. A ninth place finish, two 10ths and two 11ths bode well. They look like being strong contenders to grab a few points in every race.</p>
<p>Most impressively of all, their faith in Paul di Resta has been generously rewarded. While I poo-pooed the idea of a DTM driver coming into F1, there is no denying that di Resta has done the business.</p>
<p>The greatest thing is that di Resta has achieved this with great maturity and consistency. He is certainly showing the relatively plain Adrian Sutil &#8212; now entering his fifth year in F1 &#8212; just how it is done.</p>
<h3>Exciting battle in prospect</h3>
<p>It is too early to say if Force India can continue to challenge for sixth place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship. To my eyes, it seems as though Sauber have the upper hand here, although Force India can well expect to beat Toro Rosso.</p>
<p>What Force India can certainly take heart from is the fact that they definitely have not dropped out of the midfield. They are not being caught by, for instance, Lotus.</p>
<p>That is certainly a lot more than can be said for Williams, the team that narrowly beat Force India to sixth last year. That Force India have managed to avoid Williams&#8217;s fate is evidence enough that they are still a force to be reckoned with.</p>

<p>When I closed down vee8 during the winter, I originally envisaged that I would be doing a lot more guest posts on other blogs. It hasn&#8217;t quite turned out that way &#8212; possibly because I&#8217;m too proud, or I don&#8217;t think a certain post is right for another blog.</p>
<p>I have been promising to write a guest post for F1 Badger for months now, and it&#8217;s good to get it out there! Hopefully you&#8217;ll be seeing more of my F1 writing in other locations once again soon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was absolutely buzzing after the Turkish Grand Prix, a race that had almost everything you could ask for. Even though superficially all the pre-race hype had Red Bull easily in the lead, it turned out that McLaren have turned up the wick and give them a really hard fight.</p>
<p>Red Bull hung on to the lead, as McLaren failed to take advantage during the pitstops. Thereafter, we were treated to an amazingly tense battle at the very front, with all four front-running cars running within a couple of seconds of each other after the pitstops had taken place.</p>
<p>I am struggling to think of any other time when the front-running cars were so close to each other so far into the race. For me, this was racing at its very best. Who needs refuelling?</p>
<h3>Red Bull threw away a &#8220;sure-fire 1-2&#8243;</h3>
<p>By lap 40, the McLarens had fallen back a tad, but Sebastian Vettel was still racing closely with Mark Webber. It transpires that Webber was <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84050">using up more fuel</a> than Vettel, with the German able to save fuel while running in the race leader&#8217;s slipstream. Webber therefore had to start conserving fuel sooner than Vettel, whose pace had picked up.</p>
<p>That gave Vettel the golden opportunity to seize the race lead. But disaster struck when the two <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8713653.stm">collided in the most dramatic fashion</a> as Vettel attempted to overtake. The German had to retire, but Webber limped on to the pits and ended up in third place.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s one of the most extraordinary things I can remember seeing in F1. This is exactly what I love about the sport. Once you think you&#8217;ve seen it all, something even more incredible happens. Red Bull should have had an easy 1-2. But after being pressed by McLaren, Red Bull have ended up, in the words of team boss Christian Horner, handing 43 points on a plate to McLaren.</p>
<h3>Red Bull face a driver management nightmare</h3>
<p>It is the worst case scenario for Red Bull, not only because a relatively safe 1-2 was lost. The team management now has a complete nightmare job &#8212; it must try to keep both drivers happy when inevitably fingers are being pointed and jabbed in opposite directions.</p>
<p>Initial reaction was that the crash was Vettel&#8217;s fault. He had half a chance to pass Webber, and bit off more than he could chew. While the speed advantage ensured that Vettel could run alongside Webber, he wasn&#8217;t quite fast enough to overtake cleanly. Presumably worried that he would be compromised going into the corner by running so close to the left edge of the track, Vettel turned in towards Webber.</p>
<p>Webber held his line, having given Vettel just enough space and no more. Even though the onboard footage shows Webber trying to steer slightly to the right, Vettel&#8217;s steering movement was much more extreme, and he ended up colliding straight into his team mate&#8217;s car.</p>
<p>My brother and I strongly disagreed about this during the race. I feel that it was Vettel&#8217;s responsibility to ensure that he could overtake in a clean manner. Webber left enough room for Vettel to run alongside him, and it was Vettel who changed direction. This appeared to be the broad consensus viewpoint among most F1 pundits.</p>
<p>It is highly surprising therefore to see the <a href="http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2010/5/10855.html">Red Bull management appear to come out in Vettel&#8217;s favour</a>, at the risk of upsetting Mark Webber even when most people are taking Webber&#8217;s side. If I was Mark Webber, I&#8217;d be pretty pissed off by this turn of events.</p>
<p>In a way, you can understand why the team would want to back Sebastian Vettel. He is clearly the team&#8217;s best long-term hope, even if in the short- to medium-term Mark Webber is often the faster of the two.</p>
<p>Moreover, Vettel is the only tangible evidence of a vaguely successful driver coming out of the Red Bull young drivers&#8217; programme which the drinks company has poured so much resource into. I am sure Helmut Marko is a proud person, and he would like to think of himself as a mentor to the drivers he that have been through his drivers&#8217; programme over the years. Mark Webber is only at Red Bull to plug the embarrassing vacant gap left over by the complete lack of any other decent drivers to emerge from the programme.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84052">Helmut Marko may deny</a> that the team favours Sebastian Vettel. But the fact he and his colleagues in the Red Bull Racing management have been prepared to publicly blame Mark Webber for the incident &#8212; when the vast majority of the F1 community holds the opposite point of view &#8212; is indicative.</p>
<p>F1 journalists have certainly been left surprised by Red Bull&#8217;s actions after the race. Will Buxton has been particularly vociferous on Twitter, <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/15047828444">first saying</a>: &#8220;Total BS being smelt around the paddock.&#8221; <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/15055696475">He later added</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Helmut Marko &#8211; &#8220;Vettel was 2 metres ahead&#8221;. Riiiiiight. That&#8217;s why he and Mark made contact, yeah? Red BS stinking up the place.</p></blockquote>
<h3>Did McLaren also crack?</h3>
<p>Meanwhile, are things quietly unravelling at McLaren too? It has not been attracting as much attention, but it&#8217;s worth pointing out that the race between Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button was also distinctly odd.</p>
<p>At the very same point of the track a few laps later, Jenson Button got a run on Lewis Hamilton, and the pair had a ding-dong battle for several corners. Luckily, this time round both drivers were more sensible. A good, tough, clean fight was the main result.</p>
<p>Button briefly led, but Hamilton ultimately prevailed. Immediately afterwards, Button suddenly fell right off the pace.</p>
<p>After the race, I thought Lewis Hamilton looked a bit wooden and tense on the podium. Both Martin Brundle and Anthony Davidson picked up on his unusual body language, which seemed quite negative for someone who had just won a race.</p>
<p>Both McLaren drivers seemed confused when they were talking to each other just before going out for the podium ceremony. They were having an interesting conversation until it appeared that they suddenly remembered a camera and microphone were picking up their conversation and broadcasting it on the FOM world feed!</p>
<h3>The tension between the driver&#8217;s interest and the team&#8217;s interest</h3>
<p>This pair of situations throws the issue of team orders back into the spotlight. Superficially, team orders are banned &#8212; but that doesn&#8217;t stop teams giving drivers cryptic messages, or using mechanisms such as instructions to &#8220;save fuel&#8221; in order to slow down one of the drivers.</p>
<p>Team orders shouldn&#8217;t really be banned, as it is understandable that teams will always want to look at the bigger pictures as far as the whole team is concerned. It has always been a part of motor racing, and always will be. But there is always a tension when a driver disagrees with the team&#8217;s view.</p>
<p>This tension between the driver&#8217;s individual interest and the need for a driver to also play a role as a &#8220;team mate&#8221; is one of the most fascinating aspects of Formula 1 for me. It doesn&#8217;t actually crop up all that often. But when it does, the results can be explosive, as we have seen today.</p>
<p>We have seen that in both front-running teams in Turkey. The situation arose with both teams because &#8212; uniquely &#8212; all four drivers were running so close with one another. Even fourth placed Button could literally see the leading car at all points during the race. Each one of those four drivers would have felt like they had a major chance of winning today. That&#8217;s when egos collide, and team orders begin to unravel.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s engineers said over the team radio that &#8220;we pushed them and they cracked&#8221;, referring to Red Bull. Given Helmut Marko&#8217;s comments that Vettel needed to push Webber because he in turn was being pushed by Hamilton appears to vindicate this. But, in their own little way, did McLaren also crack today?</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t think there is much need to justify why I have placed Piquet at the bottom of the list. Suffice it to say that I hope he never races competitively again.</p>
<h3>24. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Sébastien Bourdais spent the 2008 season explaining that we should wait to judge him until the return of slicks in 2009. Slicks came in 2009. He has been duly judged.</p>
<h3>23. Romain Grosjean</h3>
<p>I feel a little bit sorry for Romain Grosjean. He was thrown into as difficult a situation as it is possible to imagine. Having done no testing whatsoever, he became Renault&#8217;s second driver just in time for a massive scandal involving Renault&#8217;s previous second driver to envelop the team. He didn&#8217;t perform very well, but they were exceptionally difficult circumstances in my view.</p>
<h3>22. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>I thought Nakajima did a good job in 2008, but 2009 was a huge disappointment. His main achievement of the season was to qualify an admittedly impressive 5th place for the British Grand Prix. However, his race was poor and he finished 11th. Way to hoof it over the bar.</p>
<h3>21. Jaime Alguersuari</h3>
<p>As with the other drivers who were expected to hit the ground running mid-season, Alguersuari was disadvantaged by the fact that he had done no testing. It may also be said that he was brought into F1 too quickly by the impatient Red Bull driver development juggernaut. While he was British F3 Champion of 2008, he was having a moderate season in World Series by Renault and may have befitted from some extra time to develop his skills away from the intense spotlight of F1. As a result, Alguersuari spent a lot of his time crashing or being rather unspectacular.</p>
<h3>20. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>I do wish Adrian Sutil could show us something &#8212; anything &#8212; that would once and for all conclude that he fully deserves a place in F1. He does show flashes of potential, but contrives to throw his chances away. He could have had a decent points finish in China if he had been more careful in the worsening weather conditions. And he has gained a reputation for being involved in a lot of needless crashes. His crash with Nick Heidfeld in Singapore following a needless spin was particularly unnecessary. This was made all the worse by the fact that he pulled off a frighteningly similar manoeuvre in Japan at the following race. His performance in Belgium looked poor in comparison with his team mate who battled for the win all race long. The main saving grace was a fourth place in Italy.</p>
<h3>19. Luca Badoer</h3>
<p>Yes, Luca Badoer was massively disappointing as the substitute for Felipe Massa at Ferrari. However, as I have written before, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">he had a harder job than anyone else</a> on the grid, being expected to become instantly competitive after 10 years away from racing. Given the circumstances, I think Luca Badoer performed quite admirably. It is not as though Fisichella could do much more in that Ferrari &#8212; and he didn&#8217;t have the excuse of being out of practice for a decade.</p>
<h3>18. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>I think Buemi did a decent job overall in 2009, although it&#8217;s difficult to remember any real stand-out moments. He should have another year in F1, but ought to show more in 2010 in order to justify his continued presence on the grid.</p>
<h3>17. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>2009 was another disappointing year for Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn was totally outclassed by his team mate all season long, and never looked like a driver who deserves to be driving for a team as good as McLaren. He seems competent enough, but clearly lacks the hunger and seems incapable of putting in a truly great performance.</p>
<h3>16. Vitantonio Liuzzi</h3>
<p>Liuzzi made his long-overdue return to the cockpit in a Force India this year. He did a great job at his first race back in Monza, but was slightly disappointing for the remainder of the season. 2010 will be a very important year for his career &#8212; it&#8217;s make or break time for Liuzzi.</p>
<h3>15. Kamui Kobayashi</h3>
<p>Kamui Kobayashi was notable for being the one rookie who grabbed your attention. He had only two races, but he made a huge impression on the F1 world. He was ballsy and aggressive, and provided some hugely entertaining racing, particularly against Jenson Button! The downside to this was that he overstepped the line once or twice, particularly when he caused a crash with Nakajima in Brazil. I also doubt whether the driver that races for Sauber in 2010 will show the same hunger. In these two races, Kobayashi had nothing to lose and so took the necessary risks. In 2010 it might all be very different.</p>
<h3>14. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>At the beginning of the season, Giancarlo Fisichella continued in the trajectory his career has generally taken &#8212; downwards. The season began ignominiously when he missed his pit box in Australia. There were even rumours that Force India were less than impressed, and were looking to replace him. Then came the rumours that Ferrari were looking to Fisichella as the replacement for the struggling Luca Badoer. Bang on cue, Fisichella put in one of the drives of his life. With his Force India car on song at Spa, he really should have won the race were it not for the kers of the Ferrari car he was about to step into. Once he&#8217;d secured his dream drive for Ferrari, it was back to business as usual as he lurched from disappointment to deeper disappointment.</p>
<h3>13. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>Robert Kubica was unable to shine this year in the difficult BMW car. Matters were not helped by his height, which was a major disadvantage when BMW tried to run with kers. He took a while to score his first points of the season, and was behind his team mate in the Drivers&#8217; Championship all year. The main consolation was a superb second place finish in Brazil. I hope that Renault can produce a good car for him next year &#8212; he deserves a better chance than this.</p>
<h3>12. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>It was a difficult year for Nick Heidfeld. The BMW car was a massive disappointment and it must have been quite a demoralising season for Nick Heidfeld. Nevertheless, he managed to grab a handful of points, including a second place in the curtailed Malaysian race. He also did a better job at scoring points than Robert Kubica. I deeply hope Heidfeld gets a drive for next season.</p>
<h3>11. Jarno Trulli</h3>
<p>For a long time, I have disliked Jarno Trulli. However, grudgingly, I have to admit that he did a fairly good job in 2009, despite the Toyota team&#8217;s best efforts to throw it all away. Two third place finishes near the start of the season reflected the performance of the car. But his second place in Japan was truly impressive.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On top of the exits of Bridgestone and Toyota came news that Renault had held an <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8343221.stm">emergency board meeting to discuss their future in Formula 1</a>. According to Andrew Benson at the BBC:</p>
<blockquote><p>The French car company was considering whether to remain in the sport with its own team, switch to simply being an engine supplier or quit altogether.</p></blockquote>
<p>Were Renault to pull out, it would conclude the removal of all of the major manufacturer teams in F1. Honda, BMW and Toyota have all gone in the past year. Renault are now seriously considering leaving.</p>
<p>In terms of manufacturer involvement, that would leave engine suppliers Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari. Both Mercedes and Ferrari are as close to being permanent fixtures as it comes in F1. Mercedes have been involved in F1 uninterrupted since 1993. With their increased involvement in Brawn, they look set to stick around. Ferrari have been in F1 since the beginning in 1950 and were they to leave it would be the end of F1. As such, you can more-or-less exclude both Mercedes and Ferrari from the list of manufacturers at risk of leaving F1.</p>
<p>I have to admit that I am wary of what Renault might do. I always suspected that Renault would be the first manufacturer to leave, certainly since Carlos Ghosn took over there. Now they are effectively the last one remaining. That is a surprise. Does it make it more likely for them to stay in the long run? Or is this the opportunity to join the queue of companies leaving the sport without looking a bit silly like Honda did?</p>
<p>There are more questions. Was Max Mosley right all along to push forward with his anti-manufacturer proposals? His justification was that manufacturers might leave with no warning, so it was wise to slash costs, freeze engines and neuter the sport in all sorts of ways. Now that manufacturers are leaving in droves, it looks like he may have been right.</p>
<p>The alternative possibility is that the changes he has forced through, along with the screeds of bad publicity it caused, have fundamentally made the sport less attractive. The manufacturers could well have preferred a breakaway than live with the FIA&#8217;s vision. But the FIA&#8217;s vision is what we&#8217;ve got. <a href="http://www.ferrari.com/English/News/Pages/091104_F1_We_want_a_different.aspx">Ferrari certainly have their own views</a>.</p>
<p>The thing is, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/12/08/hondas-withdrawal-in-context/">manufacturers are always fickle</a>. They always have been, and always will be. They <em>will</em> leave at the drop of a hat if it no longer forms part of their marketing strategy. Motorsport is not their core business. At the end of the day, if they won&#8217;t sell on Monday, why should they bother trying to win on Sunday?</p>
<p>But it was Max Mosley who originally moulded F1 into a sport dominated by manufacturers. He said that teams like Williams were not his vision of F1&#8242;s future. Now Williams is the model of the sort of team that will occupy around half of the grid next year.</p>
<p>In a sense, you can see this current phase as the F1 equivalent of a market correction. The bubble has burst. But while it seems painful now, this process paves the way for a more stable situation.</p>
<p>Throughout its history, Formula 1 has had a healthy mixture of manufacturer involvement and privateer passion. In recent years, the scales had tipped a bit too far towards the manufacturers, which drowned out the privateers to an almost dangerous extent.</p>
<p>F1 had become the plaything of manufacturers and multi-trillionaires. Let us not forget that alongside the likes of Honda and Toyota, businessmen such as Dietrich Mateschitz and Vijay Mallya &#8212; who have more money than they know what to do with &#8212; have bankrolled F1 teams to success. You will notice that, ignoring the &#8216;For Sale&#8217; sign outside Toro Rosso (which isn&#8217;t very prominent), these teams have remained in F1, unlike the manufacturers.</p>
<p>They are a bit more like privateers in the traditional sense. They don&#8217;t want to sell cars, though they may want to sell drinks. But in a way they are in F1 because they are attracted to it as a sport, just as people like Frank Williams and Ken Tyrrell were. Manufacturers just do it because they feel like they should.</p>
<p>Next year there might be too few manufacturers. For there to be just three companies supplying engines would be a situation almost as unsustainable as what has happened up to this year. Cosworth may be crossing their fingers though. Their business model might work if they supply more teams.</p>
<p>But I can see Renault playing a happy role as an engine supplier, even if the Renault F1 team is put up for sale. I am certain that there would be a lot of interest from serious people wanting to buy the team. Despite the turmoil of this year&#8217;s scandal, and the fact that the team has gone off the boil for the past few years, this is a team that has the facilities and the capabilities to win World Championships.</p>
<p>I would be upset to see Renault leave the sport. I have a bit of a soft spot for them. Toyota were cold and clinical, on top of being comically bad considering their budgets.</p>
<p>Honda were always a bit of a fairweather presence. They took over BAR more-or-less because there was no-one else to do it after tobacco companies left the sport. Then they set up Super Aguri because they were scared to sack Takuma Sato properly. While many were attracted to Super Aguri for their pluck and while struggling at the back in difficult circumstances, it should never be forgotten that Super Aguri was always a crass and expensive publicity stunt.</p>
<p>Renault, though, have real heritage. They have a history in the shape of their involvement in the sport in the 1970s and 1980s. And the current incarnation of the team has been notably successful, mostly for being the one team that has been able to put up a sustained fight against Ferrari in this decade by beating the Scuderia two years in a row.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s hoping that Renault don&#8217;t decide to depart. I am especially hopeful for Robert Kubica, a hugely talented driver who after being put through the wringer at BMW this year does not need this again. But, unlike the other teams, I have a feeling that the future of the Enstone-based squad will be perfectly safe no matter who owns it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This won&#8217;t take long.</p>
<p>First of all, it is worth pointing out just how awesome Sebastian Vettel was at Suzuka. At this &#8220;drivers&#8217; circuit&#8221; which suited the Red Bull car down to the ground, Vettel was untouchable.</p>
<p>An error meant that instead of the normal on board channel, the BBC broadcast the on board camera of Vettel only for a large part of the race. Although this meant being unable to see any other cars on board, it provided an opportunity to watch an up-and-coming master at work. I can tell you he was definitely pushing hard, and to my mind he almost lost his car at Degner 2 twice. And they are only the moments I saw.</p>
<p>Vettel&#8217;s awe-inspiring dominance was in stark contrast to the other three Red Bull drivers in a weekend that promised so much. Even the Toro Rosso, which has been at the back for almost all of the season, looked like it had awesome pace. Unfortunately, its two rookie drivers both made a bit of a hash of things multiple times each throughout the weekend, meaning the potential came to nothing.</p>
<p>Webber also had a tough weekend after a big crash in Saturday Practice which left him with no car to qualify with. Having started from the pitlane, he then suffered a litany of problems forcing him to pit three times in quick succession. As a result, the race ended with one Red Bull dominating, and the three others footing the result sheet.</p>
<p>Beyond that, there is not much to say about the race. Jarno Trulli did a good job, which he does once or twice a year. But it&#8217;s not the sort of thing that would impress me enough to hire him. Maybe the new Lotus team will think differently.</p>
<p>For my money, the best action of the race came from Heikki Kovalainen. Firstly, there was his tangle with Adrian Sutil which appears to have divided opinion. I think it was a racing incident &#8212; Sutil was probably too optimistic to go for it, but Kovalainen was probably too eager to close the door abruptly having left it wide open in the first place.</p>
<p>But if that was a bad move from Kovalainen, he more than made it up with his gutsy and opportunistic overtaking manoeuvre on Giancarlo Fisichella while they were both coming out of the pits. I let out a yelp and probably woke up half the street at that time of the morning, as I thought it was going to end up as a huge accident. In the end, it turned out well for Kovalainen and I was left impressed. It is the only ballsy thing I can ever remember him doing. But it&#8217;s probably too late to save his career at an established team.</p>
<p>It says a lot about the state of F1 at the moment that the biggest talking point of the weekend was the way penalties were dealt with. Eight drivers were penalised after qualifying. Most were for ignoring yellow flags after Sébastien Buemi&#8217;s accident, another was for blocking and others changed gearboxes and chassis.</p>
<p>This left the entire world scratching its head as to what the actual grid might be. Apparently several permutations were doing the rounds, while the FIA decided to sleep on it and published the grid just hours before the race began. Seemingly this is not a case of the Random Penalty Generator &#8212; it all seems above board, with the grid having been determined as it should be by the letter of the law. But clearly this is a system that fails the fans. We watch qualifying to find out what the starting grid will be, only to tune into the race finding that the stewards have changed it.</p>
<p>Then there is the case of the investigation into Nico Rosberg failing to observe the lap delta times under Safety Car conditions. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79250">It transpires that</a> Rosberg was unable to know what his target time was because the message was overridden by a low fuel message from the standard ECU. Given that McLaren Electronic Systems designed the ECU, my first thought was that this was a particularly elaborate way of penalising McLaren for the incident.</p>
<p>In all seriousness though, this just sums up how Formula 1 has been swallowed up by an officious governing body more interested in rules than racing. The Safety Car rules have become so ridiculously complex in the past few years, mirroring the crisis that hit qualifying a few years ago when several formats were tried out in quick succession.</p>
<p>I suspected that Nico Rosberg knew he was guilty of driving too quickly under Safety Car conditions when he conducted an <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8289280.stm">evasive interview on the BBC</a> after the race. When questioned, he would only say that he didn&#8217;t gain an advantage. When asked if he was within the rules, he only said &#8220;I definitely did what I should do&#8221;.</p>
<p>As it transpires, he probably had good reason to be coy given that it seems as though he simply did not have the information that should have been displayed, even if it meant he technically broke the rules. In that light, it is fair to let Rosberg off on this instance, but he shouldn&#8217;t even have been in this position in the first place.</p>
<p>Now we are left with the tantalising prospect of Sebastian Vettel making a Räikkönen-esque comeback. <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/10/thoughts-on-the-state-of-the-championship/">James Allen says</a> that a mental block has been passed, with Vettel now within 16 points of Button with two races to go. That is closer than Räikkönen was with two races to go in 2007.</p>
<p>It still seems like a long shot, but if the momentum is going anywhere it is not towards Button. All of a sudden, the pressure looks like it&#8217;s all on Jenson Button.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Who is the most controversial man in F1? Is it Bernie Ecclestone with his bizarre comments about Hitler and Jewish black female drivers? Is it Max Mosley with his political posturing and <del>Nazi</del> <ins>German prisoner</ins> themed sex orgies? Nope &#8212; it&#8217;s Michael Schumacher.</p>
<p>When it was announced that Michael Schumacher was preparing to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari while the Brazilian convalesces, the great ideological gulf among F1 fans suddenly re-emerged. I can&#8217;t remember seeing such strong reactions on any issue about <em>any</em> subject, let alone F1.</p>
<p>For some people, Michael Schumacher might as well be Jesus. You could produce video evidence of him killing a kitten and he would still be the greatest man on earth. Anyone who says otherwise doesn&#8217;t appreciate genius when they see it?</p>
<p>For others, there is nothing that can redeem Michael Schumacher. He is a serial cheat whose team-mates were all hamstrung and whose seven World Drivers&#8217; Championships are among the least deserving ever awarded. You must surely see that he is the most evil man on earth?</p>
<p>My view is slightly more nuanced. He was a bit of both. His record speaks for itself, and he must take credit especially for his ability to build a team around him. But I hated the way he went about racing.</p>
<p><span style="float:right;padding-left:5px;"><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/P/0755316495.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg" alt="The Edge of Greatness cover" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></span> Incidentally, for a fair-minded assessment of Michael Schumacher, I highly recommend James Allen&#8217;s book, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495">The Edge of Greatness</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></i>. I always thought James Allen as a commentator was too biased in favour of Schumacher, but his book displays a very measured and nuanced assessment of his qualities as a driver, and his failings as a sportsperson.</p>
<p>I must come straight out and say that I have never been a fan of Michael Schumacher. Never. And for me, his talent was tainted by his tendency to bend the rules whenever he had the slightest opportunity.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t even rate him much as a racer. For me, his wheel-to-wheel skills were rather poor, and he disguised this by being overly aggressive. That was why he often panicked under pressure, such as at Jerez in 1997. If he found himself in the midfield, he sometimes had very clumsy races indeed &#8212; his botched move on Takuma Sato at Suzuka in 2003 springs to mind.</p>
<p>Schumacher was famous for relying on Ross Brawn strategies to &#8220;overtake in the pitlane&#8221; rather than try to make a genuine overtaking move. I highly doubt that Schumacher would have won as many Championships if refuelling wasn&#8217;t legal. I won&#8217;t lie: 2000&#8211;2004 were my least favourite years of watching F1 since I first fell in love with the sport in the mid-1990s.</p>
<p>Since Schumacher left F1 I do feel as though I have started to enjoy F1 a lot more. Even though some of the drivers are not perfect in terms of their adherence to the rules or their spirit of fair competition, it feels a lot less like a dark cloud such as Rascassegate will come rumbling over the hills at any moment.</p>
<p>Now, of course, he is back in F1 and it has changed again. It amuses me greatly that even weeks before his first grand prix back is due to start, he already <a href="http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-fota-teams-allow-schu-to-test-f60/">sought ways to cheat</a>, to unfairly gain an advantage over his competitors. It says it all about him in one action.</p>
<p>Williams are not my favourite team either, but they were totally right to block this blatant infringement of the rules. Just a couple of weeks before, Toro Rosso&#8217;s new driver Jaime Alguersuari was refused a similar request, and he did a perfectly adequate job. Quite why a supposedly great 7 times World Champion needs to practice so much is not clear to me.</p>
<p>Ferrari&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77551">enormously arrogant statement</a> in retaliation against the blocked request sums up why I can&#8217;t stand the team so much. Apparently they think the red rule should still exist. What happened to that spirit of cooperation they were supposedly so keen on? I guess now that the Concorde Agreement is signed, cordial relations are not so important any more.</p>
<p>It is clear that the testing rules need amending. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/04/the-testing-ban-another-botched-rule-change/">I have been saying so for a long time now</a>. But until a new set of rules are agreed upon, everyone needs to adhere to them, otherwise you may as well just rip the rulebook up (some would argue Ferrari have ripped up the rulebook and written their own anyway).</p>
<p>This is all a sign that Michael Schumacher does not intend to simply go through the motions. I had wondered quite what was in this comeback for Schumacher. I saw easily <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/29/michael-schumacher-returns-to-race-for-ferrari/">why Ferrari were interested</a>. But what could possibly have motivated Schumacher?</p>
<p>After all, he potentially has so much to lose. With his wife and kids &#8212; and we know his wife is concerned because he says he has <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46549&#038;PO=46549">made an &#8220;arrangement&#8221;</a> with her that health is the top priority &#8212; he surely doesn&#8217;t want to be doing something so dangerous. He cannot possibly need the money, and he certainly doesn&#8217;t have anything else to prove (unless he wants somehow to prove that he can be a good sportsperson, but that opportunity has already been shot).</p>
<p>He also risks being embarrassed because of his waning ability. At 40, he is the oldest driver to compete in F1 since Nigel Mansell in 1995, and let us not forget that Mansell&#8217;s last period as an F1 driver was not exactly a roaring success. And after two and a half years out of competitive grand prix racing, there is every chance that he will be rusty during his forthcoming races.</p>
<p>But now we know what motivates him &#8212; it is his sheer, ruthless competitiveness. He may have initially agreed out of &#8220;loyalty&#8221; to Ferrari, but once he&#8217;s a driver again he is up to the same old tricks, looking for the slightest advantage wherever it may come from.</p>
<p>Of course, many would say that this is what sets him apart from everyone else.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wow, a day certainly is a long time in F1. I am not sure when I will get round to actually writing about the Hungarian GP, though at least there is a long break until the next race.</p>
<p>But the big news this evening is that the next race will feature Michael Schumacher on the grid. He has been announced as the replacement for Felipe Massa while the Brazilian makes his recovery.</p>
<p>A lot of names have been bandied around over the past few days, and none of them seemed terribly lucky. Optimists suggested that Fernando Alonso or Robert Kubica might be able to get out of their current contracts to move to Ferrari mid-season.</p>
<p>Mirko Bortolotti was another driver on the radar. Last year&#8217;s Italian F3 champion has impressed in previous tests with Ferrari. He is currently building up his skills in Formula Two is widely tipped to have a bright future. But it is near enough unheard-of for Ferrari to hire a young rookie.</p>
<p>Some talked up the chances of David Coulthard or Anthony Davidson getting the role. That seemed a bit like pie in the sky thinking though.</p>
<p>The other drivers who currently have relationships with Ferrari are the team&#8217;s official test and reserve drivers, Marc Gené and Luca Badoer. But they were unlikely to step in for a whole host of reasons. Neither has a particularly strong track record as a race driver, although you can argue that neither ever had a decent opportunity to show their skills.</p>
<p>But their lack of fresh experience will have seriously counted against them. Gené last raced five years ago for Williams, and faced the ignominy of being replaced by Antônio Pizzonia for being too slow! Meanwhile, Luca Badoer hasn&#8217;t raced in F1 for <em>ten</em> years.</p>
<p>The last time Ferrari had to replace a driver midway through a season was when Michael Schumacher broke his legs at the 1999 British Grand Prix. Then, it was widely expected that Luca Badoer, as Ferrari&#8217;s test driver, would take his place. Instead, the Scuderia controversially overlooked him and hired Mika Salo.</p>
<p>It was a bad year for Badoer, who came close to finishing 4th for Minardi in that season&#8217;s European Grand Prix before his car broke down. He has never had an opportunity to score a World Championship point since.</p>

<p>Luca Badoer has held the test role at Ferrari for a staggering thirteen years without there ever being a sniff of a race drive. If he was overlooked in 1999, he was going to be overlooked today.</p>
<p>Now that testing is banned, it makes you wonder just what the point of a test driver is any more. I recently read that neither Marc Gené nor Luca Badoer have had any mileage whatsoever in this season&#8217;s Ferrari F60, in which case the advantage of selecting them over Michael Schumacher &#8212; who has loads more talent and, perhaps even more importantly, ocean loads of PR value &#8212; is non-existent.</p>
<p>This comes mere weeks after an elaborate re-arranging of deckchairs at Red Bull, as they apparently sought ways to replace Sébastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso without putting Brendon Hartley in the car. Up until the mid-season point, Hartley had been the official Red Bull reserve driver. But mere days before the reserve driver would actually be needed, he was replaced by Jaime Alguersuari.</p>
<p>Other drivers left twiddling their thumbs this year include: Pedro de la Rosa, Gary Paffett, Christian Klien, Romain Grosjean (though perhaps not for long), Adam Khan, Kamui Kobayashi, Nicolas Hülkenberg, Vitantonio Liuzzi, Anthony Davidson and Alexander Wurz.</p>
<p>If a team had to bring in a replacement driver, how many of these would be considered ready and able to race? Not many of them have much in the way of decent mileage of 2009&#8242;s cars. Who is to say, for instance, that McLaren would not rather stick Paul di Resta in their car over Pedro de la Rosa? Would Toyota happily give Kobayashi a seat, or would they prefer to take Nakajima?</p>
<p>Just a few years ago it looked like drivers could make a decent living out of being a test driver. Now they never get to test, and they&#8217;ll be lucky to get to race.</p>

<p>The BBC&#8217;s lead commentator Jonathan Legard has come in for a lot of stick on the internet. In my view, most of it is wholly unwarranted. Indeed, I am quite confused at the negative reaction he has been getting. I used to listen to him from time to time when he was on Radio 5 Live, and I was a fan of him then. In my view, it took years for the station&#8217;s Formula 1 coverage to recover from his departure. He has a good voice and is clearly passionate and highly knowledgable about F1. I like his tone and his sense of humour.</p>
<p>Most importantly of all for his job is that he almost never makes mistakes. The internet collapsed in a heap of laughter when he committed the heinous crime of mistaking a replay for live action during the Malaysian Grand Prix. Name me a commentator who has never done that? There was even a mitigating factor then, as FOM&#8217;s replay graphic was playing up during the race. Apart from that, I can&#8217;t think of any time when he has made a bad mistake, misidentified a driver (except for the odd mixed-up Red Bull for a Toro Rosso &#8212; we&#8217;ve all been there) or misread a situation. He has had a couple of bad race starts, but once the race settles in he is fine.</p>
<p>In contrast, Brundle has made a few errors this season, including a mega clanger when he spent half the race in Spain confusing the prime and option tyres, which actively ruined viewers&#8217; understanding of the race. During qualifying at the British Grand Prix he spent an entire lap talking about Räikkönen even though we were watching Massa, a fact backed up by a FOM caption. He made a few mistakes during the German GP as well.</p>
<p>Some criticise Legard&#8217;s reliance on crutch phrases, which I would agree is one jarring thing about his commentary. But let us face it, at times Murray Walker may as well have had a drawstring coming out of his back, and everyone found that endearing. Why it should be different for Legard I don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p>It is true that the chemistry between him and Martin Brundle has not been very good, but that was inevitably going to take time to build up, no matter who Brundle was commentating with. Legard has a good conversational style which I like. It is a potentially great way to cover duller moments of the race without resorting to James Allen&#8217;s trick, &quot;let&#8217;s listen to the engine [while I think of something to say]&quot;.</p>
<p>Unfortunately Brundle doesn&#8217;t seem to know how to deal with Legard&#8217;s conversational style. He seems not to know how to respond to Legard, often choosing not to respond at all.</p>
<p>A typical example of this happened during the German Grand Prix, when Brundle responded unneccessarily sarcastically towards Legard&#8217;s inquisitiveness over Brundle&#8217;s statement that it would be a shame to for refuelling to be banned. It was almost as though he felt threatened that his viewpoint was being questioned. Speaking personally, I disagree with Brundle&#8217;s point of view (strategy plays a role, but if you allow it to dominate is just replaces racing with mathematics), and the rude way he expressed it totally alienated me.</p>
<p>Sometimes listening to Brundle you think he deliberately sets out for a scrap. Maybe it is his way of spicing it up by playing devil&#8217;s advocate. But I get the feeling that being combative is the only way he knows how to operate. He did, after all, make his name by constantly correcting Murray Walker, and later James Allen. He never stops &quot;correcting&quot; people. You almost get the sense that, given the chance, he would &quot;correct&quot; Michael Schumacher on the subject of being a seven times World Champion.</p>
<p>It probably doesn&#8217;t help that he is now working with a commentator who <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> constantly need to be corrected, which means he now has to adapt his style to that of a colour commentator rather than encroaching on the main commentator&#8217;s role as he has always done before. This is new territory for Brundle, and I don&#8217;t think he is coping well.</p>
<p>Some people suggest that you could solve this problem by making Martin Brundle the main commentator. It might be worth experimenting with, but I can easily see Brundle&#8217;s ego soon dominating the entire show if he was to be given that role.</p>
<p>I have to admit that sometimes I wonder now if I would miss Martin Brundle. I spent most of last year listening to Radio 5 Live, sans-Brundle, and it didn&#8217;t affect my enjoyment of the races. Given that he is almost certainly the most expensive person on BBC F1 team, I wonder if it is not time for him to be given another role, because for me he is probably the least value for money.</p>
<p>He does have a good turn of phrase, and is an engaging talker on F1, so I wouldn&#8217;t like to see him go for good. Perhaps he could be given a smaller role such as that of post-race analyst. The colour commentator role can go to someone with more recent experience of an F1 car such as Anthony Davidson, because Brundle increasingly seems at a loss to explain some of the technical elements of team radio conversations.</p>
<p>And can someone explain to me why Brundle hasn&#8217;t been taken aside and politely asked to pronounce Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s name correctly? He must be the only person in the world who appears to mistake this ace F1 driver for some kind of telecommunications company, or a brand of bottle watter. Vett-tel? It&#8217;s &#8216;fettle&#8217;. Really, <em>really</em> annoying.</p>
