<p>The morning of Saturday 20 August 2011 at Silverstone was warm and sunny. It was difficult to imagine that the weather would be a problem. As I was staying in a campsite just a stone&#8217;s throw away from the circuit, I thought nothing of just heading there in a t-shirt.</p>
<p>The morning was brilliant. As <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2011/09/22/exploring-the-circuit-world-series-by-renault-at-silverstone/">outlined in a previous post</a>, I had a brilliant time wandering around the circuit and watching the qualifying sessions that were taking place.</p>
<p>The big race that I was looking forward to, the Formula Renault 3.5 race, was approaching. A breeze picked up, and it even began to rain. There was no way I could nip back to the campsite to pick up some warmer clothes. I had to sit it out, high up in a stand, with the bitter wind blowing right through me.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t actually feel too cold. The buzz of watching the race allowed me to ignore it more than I otherwise would. I did have a cold for about a week afterwards. But it was definitely worth it.</p>
<p>We opted to sit in the stand at Maggotts, where you can see the cars twice a lap. Early on in the race one driver dropped back significantly, so for almost the entire race there was always something to see.</p>
<p>I had worried about what it would be like trying to watch a race from the side of the track rather than the living room. Television has the obvious advantage of being able to follow the cars all the way round the track, rather than simply making do with them blasting past.</p>
<p>Of course, watching a race in the flesh is an exhilirating experience. But it requires a bit of skill. Sure, there are are the commentators on the public address system. But you can&#8217;t hear that when there are cars in the vicinity. So it&#8217;s a matter of taking the bits you can see with your eyes, and the shards of whatever you hear from the commentators, and piecing them together.</p>
<p>For Saturday&#8217;s Formula Renault 3.5 race I could almost <em>never</em> hear the commentators. My interest in the race did not wane though.</p>
<p>The main interest at the start of the race was watching Jean-Eric Vergne make his way back through the field. Vergne had to start from the pits after an apparent electrical problem on the grid. But his class was clear to see as he was able to make up several places during the race.</p>
<p>A clear top three emerged, with Robet Wickens, Alexander Rossi and Daniel Ricciardo opening a significant gap to the next small group of cars. For a couple of laps it looked like Rossi was capable of passing Wickens. But in the end, Ricciardo in fact got the better of Rossi, and the promising American had to make do with third.</p>
<p>I <em>assumed</em> that Wickens had won, because I couldn&#8217;t hear the commentators and we were nowhere near the finish line. I was only while I was walking round the circuit again after the race that I managed to find out for sure!</p>
<p>(I trudged back to the campsite to retrieve my jacket. Right on cue, the blazing sun came out again.)</p>
<p>It was a crushingly dominant weekend for Robert Wickens. He turned up late for Sunday qualifying after being stuck in traffic on the way to Silverstone, but that still didn&#8217;t stop him from taking pole and another win.</p>
<p>For Sunday&#8217;s race we opted to sit on the outside of Copse, opposite the sole television screen in the circuit. The idea was to get a fuller picture of what was going on in the race. This location has the added bonus of being at the pitlane exit, so we saw the moment when the weekend got from bad to worse for Jean-Eric Vergne!</p>

<p>The start of the race went well for him, as he was running in second place. But a wide range of different strategies were used by the drivers, and Vergne ended up behind Ricciardo after his pitstop. The pair had a pretty good battle, and Vergne had a good look at Ricciardo going into Copse.</p>
<p>They were so close that it was impossible to imagine any car separating them. So imagine the sensation when Nathanael Berthon emerged from the pits just in front of Vergne! From looking set for second, Vergne ended up in fifth! Definitely a weekend to forget for Vergne.</p>
<p>But a weekend to remember for Robert Wickens and his team, Carlin. They wrapped up the Teams&#8217; Championship at Silverstone.</p>
<p>Formula Renault 3.5 wasn&#8217;t the only category to provide major excitement though. After our <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2011/09/22/visiting-the-village-world-series-by-renault-at-silverstone/">visit to the village</a>, we emerged to see Mégane Trophy Eurocup cars completing their qualifying session. They were instantly captivating. For me, these cars were the surprise highlight of the racing action.</p>
<p>The championship may be crushingly dominated by one man, Stefano Comini, who has won 10 of the 12 races so far this season. But that doesn&#8217;t matter because these cars are so entertaining to watch. They look fantastic, but best of all they <em>sound</em> fantastic.</p>
<p>Later on in the day we watched race from Vale. Stefano Comini had a poor getaway but soon made his way up to second, behind his teammate Niccolò Nalio. The battle was hugely exciting to watch. Comini was clearly superior on the brakes, and I am sure at one point they even touched here at Vale.</p>

<p>It was only a matter of time before Comini would pass. In fact, I wondered if Comini&#8217;s advantage was only at Vale, because it was inconceivable that he could be so clearly superior, yet still unable to pass.</p>
<p>I later spoke to someone who watched the race from another part of the circuit, and he confirmed that Comini also looked stellar there as well. It just goes to show. Catching is one thing. Passing is another matter.</p>
<p>Comini did manage to pass Nalio in the end. A class act in the Méganes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I feel sad. The Monaco Grand Prix was a great race &#8212; easily the best of the season so far. At a track notorious for processions, Monaco was producing a corker.</p>
<p>Pirelli&#8217;s tyres held up for a change, meaning genuinely good racing through strategy, not cartoon-style degredation. The DRS is little use round here too, meaning it had little effect.</p>
<h3>A beautiful move on Schumacher</h3>
<p>DRS did play a role. But even so, passing into Sainte Dévote requires a massive pair, whether you have DRS or not. And that is just what Lewis Hamilton did. He pulled off a stunning move on Michael Schumacher that brilliantly caught the veteran off guard.</p>
<p>It was brave, but it was also perfectly judged. Both gave each other racing room. It was just the sort of passing that we want to see in F1.</p>
<h3>Hamilton loses the plot against Massa and Maldonado</h3>
<p>But sadly it went pear-shaped from there. It seems as though, after completing the move of the season, he seemed to believe he was invincible.</p>
<p>An over-ambitious move on Felipe Massa at the Lowes hairpin was a poor misjudgement. His drive-through penalty echoed that handed out to Paul di Resta who made a similar error.</p>
<p>Having damaged the Ferrari, Hamilton then opted to overtake Massa in the tunnel. It is not news that there is only one line through the dangerous and high-speed tunnel. Hamilton&#8217;s move forced the Brazilian onto the marbles and ultimately the barrier.</p>
<p>Then after the re-start, he attempted to repeat the move he made near the start on Schumacher. This time his target was Pastor Maldonado, but unfortunately this time target was meant in the literal sense. Hamilton barged straight into Maldonado, in the sort of move that only really belongs in a touring car race, if it even belongs there.</p>
<h3>Post-race petulance</h3>
<p>Hamilton&#8217;s excuse? It can be paraphrased: &#8220;Well, at least I was trying to race.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not buying that. There was plenty of excellent overtaking going on during the Monaco Grand Prix that didn&#8217;t involve punting others off. There were lots of examples of aggressive, but clean racing.</p>
<p>Hamilton managed it himself early on against Schumacher. But there was Schumacher&#8217;s move on Rosberg. Barrichello&#8217;s on Schumacher. Massa and Maldonado against Rosberg. Clean racing is possible, even at Monaco &#8212; no contact required. Check out the <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2011/05/what-passing-in-monaco.html">excellent highlights video at Axis of Oversteer</a> to see them all.</p>
<p>But Hamilton couldn&#8217;t hold his hands up and admit that he had a bad race. He instead chose to question why he had been called to see the stewards at five out of the six races this season so far.</p>

<p>Here is a clue. Don&#8217;t cause three crashes in one race. Then you might not get hauled in front of the stewards. As it is, Hamilton is lucky not to have got the black flag for driving dangerously and ending the race of two other drivers.</p>
<p>Instead, Hamilton chose to &#8220;joke&#8221; that &#8220;maybe it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m black&#8221;.</p>
<h3>A reminder of why Hamilton is so divisive</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s too easy to blame the stewards. Worryingly, Hamilton seems to genuinely believe that he should be untouchable &#8212; that he can get away with whatever he wants.</p>
<p>Paul di Resta caused an accident, got penalised, and held his hands up after the race. He admitted that he made a rookie error, that he needs to learn from it and improve for next time.</p>

<p>For Lewis Hamilton? As Martin Brundle said in the BBC&#8217;s post-race F1 forum, the problem with Hamilton is that it&#8217;s always someone else&#8217;s fault. He has never been able to accept his mistakes, and he is always the first one to get straight on the radio and whine about non-existant instances of bad driving he has seen from other drivers.</p>

<p>All-in-all, this weekend has been a reminder of what made Lewis Hamilton such a divisive figure when he burst onto the scene in 2007. Back then his cockiness grated, but he was young and arrogant. In that sense, maybe it could be understood.</p>
<p>In more recent years, he seemed to have mellowed. He deserved to win his championship in 2008. Ever since he has done a good job at McLaren, and has managed to keep the lid on his post-race outbursts, even if he is quick to get on the radio to whine during the race.</p>
<p>But Monaco brought it all back to square one.</p>
<p>And it was such a fine start to the race as well. If he&#8217;d just left it there, his original, clean move on Schumacher would probably have ended up being my pass of the season. As it is, I have been left angered by the cockiness of a driver that really ought to know better by now.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While it is by no means unheard of for pieces of bodywork to come off an F1 car from time to time, there has already been quite a lot of it this season. In fact, after one and a half race weekends, I can think of four big bodywork failures.</p>
<p>Firstly, there was <strong>Kamui Kobayashi&#8217;s</strong> engine cover detatching itself during practice in Australia. Sauber have since modified the bodywork.</p>
<p>During the Australian Grand Prix, <strong>Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s</strong> floor became loose.</p>
<p><strong>Nick Heidfeld</strong> also had a substantial amount of damage to his car&#8217;s bodywork, and it&#8217;s not clear how it happened. There is apparently no TV footage of it, and to my knowledge there has been no real explanation of what actually happened to cause the damage.</p>
<p>Then this morning the qualifying session for the Malaysian Grand Prix was halted after <strong>Sébastien Buemi&#8217;s</strong> left sidepod flew off his car and settled on the racing line.</p>
<p>There is every chance that this is all a coincidence, but I do find it intriguing that so much bodywork has fallen off the F1 cars this season already, and the second race hasn&#8217;t even started yet.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> I have been reminded by <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/F1Times/status/56759513998561280">The F1 Times on Twitter</a> that two onboard cameras have also fallen off this season already. Felipe Massa&#8217;s came off in Practice 3 in Australia, while Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s detatched in Practice 3 in Malaysia.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It can&#8217;t be easy being the oldest driver in F1. Just ask the BBC&#8217;s commentators.</p>
<p>I remember Martin Brundle once describing how the fact that he was the oldest driver in the 1996 season caught up with him and began to define him as a driver. Despite having a reasonable season, by the following year he had switched to his new career in broadcasting.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, David Coulthard&#8217;s final season in F1 was littered with clumsy accidents. Didn&#8217;t his first corner coming-together in the final race of 2008 just sum up his season?</p>
<p>Now it looks like it might be Rubens Barrichello&#8217;s turn to have a rusty final season. Certainly, his Australian Grand Prix weekend was about as error-strewn as it gets these days.</p>
<p>There was an off during Practice 2. A further spin in Qualifying 2 ended his session early, cementing 17th slot on the grid.</p>
<p>Then on lap one of the race he went off at turn 4. Some time later, he steamed into Nico Rosberg at the same corner. It looked suspciously like a ridiculously optimistic overtaking move that was only ever going to go wrong. But Barrichello later <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90288">blamed his tyres</a>. This sounds like a tall tale to me.</p>
<p>Rubens Barrichello is not the oldest driver on the grid this year. That accolade falls to Michael Schumacher, who is probably seen by most as a separate case. Schumacher faces his own kind of pressure &#8212; the over-the-hill seven times champion who should have stayed in retirement while his reputation was still in tact.</p>
<p>Beyond that, Barrichello is the stand-out old guy in F1. He certainly has the longevity and experience in F1 that no-one else has. He has started a truly staggering 300 grands prix. That is an astonishing 36% of all Formula 1 grands prix that have ever been held! But the experience doesn&#8217;t seem to be doing him much good at the moment.</p>
<p>I hope it doesn&#8217;t turn out to be the case. It&#8217;s impossible not to have a soft spot for the Brazilian. But I fear already that he may be having his &#8220;Coulthard year&#8221;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I must confess to being rather perplexed by Toyota&#8217;s stance in the driver market over the past couple of months. It may be correct that neither Jarno Trulli nor Timo Glock have the potential to truly set the world alight. But neither are they complete disasters. In fact, they are both rather competent.</p>
<p>Even though he has a tendency to fade away during races, Trulli is very quick over one lap and brings with him a wealth of experience that very few alternative drivers would be able to offer. He has also had a couple of highly impressive results this year, including an convincing 2nd place in Japan. But, fair enough, he&#8217;s a poor racer, so I could understand Toyota ditching Trulli in favour of another experienced driver or an exciting young talent.</p>
<p>But to, at the same time, appear to be absolutely desperate to also get rid of Timo Glock seems absolutely bonkers to me. Glock&#8217;s real talent remains to be seen. He has never won a race, and he tends to qualify poorly &#8212; but often races extraordinarily well. In this sense, he is almost a mirror-image of Trulli.</p>
<p>It is worth remembering, though, that Glock is still relatively young and therefore has a lot of potential to improve. I thought his 2nd place finish in Singapore was a hugely promising sign, in addition to some other impressive performances this season.</p>
<p>Yet, Toyota appear to be totally nonchalant about his potential, even on the back of that result in Singapore. Ever since then, they have contrived to replace him with Kamui Kobayashi, a Japanese Toyota protégé but an unknown quantity. He supposedly had a cold in Japan, so was replaced during Friday Practice at Suzuka. But no-one saw that Glock had much of a sniffle.</p>
<p>Then, since his qualifying crash the following day, he has been forced to sit out as a result of &#8220;cracked vertebrae&#8221;. But eyebrows are raised as Glock happily walks around the place. Phantom colds and injuries &#8212; it is almost as though Toyota&#8217;s doctor has been slipped a tenner to fabricate reasons for Glock to sit out the rest of the season.</p>
<p>Of course, Glock&#8217;s impact was mighty hefty, so he could well be injured and sitting out as a precaution. But it is very convenient that it should open the door for precisely what Toyota appear to have wanted, which was to put Kobayashi in the car ASAP.</p>
<p>Toyota have been in a strange position during this year&#8217;s Silly Season. They have been positioning themselves rather oddly. Experienced journalists are reading between the lines and saying that it&#8217;s because they will not be in F1 next year, despite having committed until 2012 by signing the Concorde Agreement. This is further underlined by the fact that Williams&#8217;s engine deal with Toyota has been terminated a year early.</p>
<p><a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/31/the-future-of-toyota-in-f1/">Joe Saward has an excellent post today analysing the situation</a>. Toyota leaving F1 is the worst-case scenario. The best-case scenario seems to be having a reduced budget next season. Since at least September, there has been talk of the Toyota F1 team having a massively slashed budget for next season.</p>
<p>For a number of months, Toyota boss John Howett has been talking down the chances of Jarno Trulli racing for the team next season. The claim is that Trulli is asking for too much money.</p>
<p>Why a team that is so low on money would go on to <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8315434.stm">court Kimi Räikkönen</a> of all people remains to be explained. Räikkönen has openly scoffed at the offer, by <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79831">ruling out every team bar McLaren</a> as a destination for next season. Quite right too. Räikkönen would be better off driving a bus than driving a Toyota F1 car.</p>
<p>No doubt Räikkönen is a better driver than Jarno Trulli or Timo Glock. Despite question marks over his motivation, at least Räikkönen has proved that he can do it. But let us face it &#8212; Toyota are living in a dream world if they think they can attract a driver of Kimi&#8217;s calibre for a cut-down price.</p>
<p>I was flabbergasted to read <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKSP40176620091002">what John Howett had to say about his current drivers</a>, who I think have done a good enough job this season:</p>
<blockquote><p>We like Timo very much, he did a great job, but still we have a car that is more regularly capable of being on the podium and much closer to the top this year. We are not delivering, and there are things beyond the team and the chassis itself.</p></blockquote>
<p>It is not difficult to decode Howett&#8217;s message. Don&#8217;t blame the car, blame the drivers. That is despite the fact that Toyota &#8212; in their eight seasons in Formula 1 &#8212; have never even looked close to having a car capable of winning an F1 race.</p>
<p>I also think that it is a bit rich of Toyota to complain about its drivers. They have always behaved a bit strangely when it came to their drivers. This is the team that did away with the promising partnership of Mika Salo and Allan McNish after just one season, for no good reason. This is the team whose most sophisticated driver choice was to hire a boy called Ralf then parade around the place saying &#8220;Schumacher drives for us!&#8221;, which at least pleased the marketing men.</p>
<p>Jarno Trulli is <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79570">rightly miffed</a> about John Howett&#8217;s stance.</p>
<blockquote><p>Now I don&#8217;t know whether Toyota really wants to retain me or not. And with someone trying to denigrate me through the press&#8230; I&#8217;ve read many incorrect things about me. I haven&#8217;t spoken with the team about my contract for at least two months. So, either someone is playing dirty or maybe this person has been misquoted. But I keep calm and good.</p></blockquote>
<p>Meanwhile, while Timo Glock has been lying in his &#8220;sick bed&#8221;, negotiations with Toyota for a drive next season <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/79837">are said to have completely collapsed</a>.</p>
<p>So what are Toyota playing at? Do they seriously believe that replacing known quantities such as Trulli and Glock with the likes of Kobayashi, Nakajima or Sutil will pave the way for a more successful future? If so, I am sure they are the only ones in the world who believe it.</p>
<p>If Joe Saward is right, and this is all a final desperate attempt for the Toyota F1 employees to keep the gravy train running, they are surely only ensuring a bigger death a year or two down the line.</p>
<p>If Toyota leave, good riddance I say. Throughout their entire existence, I have found them to be easily the least likeable team on the grid by a long shot. Their behaviour this season has only further underlined my impression that Toyota is an entity that has no place in F1 and wouldn&#8217;t succeed in a million years.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/25/ruby-on-rails/">review of the European Grand Prix</a>, I didn&#8217;t mention Luca Badoer, who made his high-profile Ferrari début at the race. It was always going to be a tough ask, because the odds were so heavily stacked against him.</p>
<p>For one thing, he had to get used to the car, which he had never driven at racing speeds before. <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/ted-kravitz-the-european-gp-fr.html">According to Ted Kravitz</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Evidently the Ferrari F60 is a very complicated car to operate. There are many buttons and dials to turn and twist: Kers harvest and usage settings, brake balance and bias levers, fuel and oil pumps, front flap adjusts and the usual revs, throttle and mixture settings.</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure if he is implying that the F60 is more difficult to get used to than other current F1 cars. But whatever, it is certainly new territory for Badoer who is used to driving cars in the relatively tranquil environment of the test session rather than the intense spotlight and razzmatazz of a grand prix weekend. To deal with all of this in the first time he&#8217;s properly driven the F60 &#8212; and in his first race for ten years at that &#8212; is undeniably a big ask.</p>
<p>Luca Badoer must have been as shocked as everyone else when it was announced that he was to race in Valencia. It is typical of Badoer&#8217;s luck. F1 has shat on this driver for his whole career. I would highly recommend his <a href="http://f1rejects.com/drivers/badoer/biography.html">biography on F1 Rejects</a> for a full overview.</p>
<p>He may not be F1 championship material. But he is the 1992 Formula 3000 champion, having beaten Rubens Barrichello, Olivier Panis and David Coulthard among others in the process. So he is no fool.</p>
<p>But in F1 he never got the proper chance to demonstrate his abilities, being stuck with back-of-the-grid teams Scuderia Italia, Minardi and Forti &#8212; and despite usually having the upper-hand over his team mates on the racetrack, politics often meant he found it difficult to move ahead in his career.</p>
<p>You might have thought that signing with Ferrari to become their test driver in 1998 would have seen an upswing in his fortunes. In a lot of ways, Badoer must be the unsung hero of Ferrari&#8217;s success since then. He is the test driver who has helped develop cars capable of winning Championship after Championship following a twenty year drought for Ferrari.</p>
<p>Normally a team&#8217;s test driver would be the first choice to step in if a driver needs replaced. Inexplicably, when Michael Schumacher broke his legs in 1999, Ferrari opted to look outside the team. They placed Mika Salo in the car, when most observers expected Badoer to get the nod. Subsequently, Badoer stayed on with Ferrari having been promised that he would be the reserve driver.</p>
<p>Since then, Ferrari has had a remarkable period of driver stability. Between 1999 and 2009, Ferrari changed drivers only three times (Irvine replaced by Barrichello, Barrichello replaced by Massa and Schumacher replaced by Räikkönen)! At no point did any driver have to be replaced at short notice. No space for Badoer ever emerged. One must imagine that after twelve years waiting, he would have given up believing.</p>
<p>Then Felipe Massa was injured at Hungary. In the year that there was a radical change in technical regulations which is said to be the biggest in 25 years. In the year that testing is banned. In the one year that Luca Badoer had never driven the Ferrari car. And when the next race was at a brand new circuit which he had never visited.</p>
<p>Of course Luca Badoer didn&#8217;t get the call. Michael Schumacher did instead, and the media could barely contain their excitement. Schumacher is a seven times World Champion, but still people openly wondered: is Schumacher up to the task? Can he get used to the new car? Is he fit enough? At 40, will he be too old? In the end, it turned out that Schumacher couldn&#8217;t do the job because of the injury he picked up while racing Superbikes in Germany.</p>
<p>So it was down to Badoer to shoulder the responsibility of making something out of the pickle that Ferrari found themselves in. Of course, the media won&#8217;t be lining up with the same excuses that were already being served up on Schumacher&#8217;s behalf before his comeback. This was despite the fact that there are actually quite legitimate reasons for Badoer to be off the pace. Badoer is not much younger than Schumacher, and is the oldest driver on the grid. But that is not an excuse apparently, despite the fact that it supposedly would have been for Schumacher.</p>
<p>Instead, the media has spent its time openly laughing at Luca Badoer, almost willing him to do badly. The schadenfreude soaked through the reports as the journalists gleefully reported Badoer&#8217;s four pitlane speeding offences on Friday, a symptom of the fact that the pitlane speed limit is substantially higher during test sessions and Badoer needed time to adjust to the new braking points required.</p>
<p>All I can say is, Badoer is not the one who parked his car at Rascasse, but never mind. Of course, the journalists were just taking it out on Badoer because he isn&#8217;t Princess Schumacher so they lost their &#8220;fairytale&#8221; story that is so desperately needed to sell a turgid circuit like Valencia.</p>
<p>I found the gulf in opinion between the journalists and the drivers very interesting. While the journalists were busy thinking up oh-so-witty nicknames like &#8220;Look-how Bad-you-are&#8221;, the drivers in contrast felt sorry for the situation that Badoer found himself in. Jarno Trulli <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77893">described Badoer&#8217;s situation as &#8220;impossible&#8221;</a>. <a href="http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/22082009/2/drivers-supportive-struggling-badoer.html">Lewis Hamilton said</a> that Badoer has &#8220;done a good job just to keep it on the track&#8221;, while Kovalainen shrugged: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what else you could have expected.&#8221;</p>
<p>The split was also demonstrated on the Chequered Flag podcast. David Croft mocked, &#8220;even Yuji Ide had more promise&#8221; (which is totally untrue &#8212; Badoer has already achieved much more in his career than Ide could ever hope for). <i>F1 Racing</i>&#8216;s Bradley Lord said, &#8220;Badoer approached this race as a test &#8212; and he failed this one.&#8221; Ha-very-ha. Anthony Davidson had plead to his bloodthirsty journalist colleagues, &#8220;give him some space!&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/ferrari/6082025/Forget-the-cruel-jokes-Ferrari-must-stick-with-Luca-Badoer-at-least-for-one-more-race.html">David Coulthard summed up the situation nicely</a>: &#8220;Who would be Luca Badoer? You wait 10 years for your chance to race for Ferrari and then, despite having no preparation whatsoever, you get slated for not being Michael Schumacher.&#8221;</p>
<p>In <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/08/luca-is-not-that-slow.html">Checkpoint 10&#8242;s excellent analysis</a>, it is shown that Badoer was not actually half as bad as the journalists would have you believe. His qualifying time was 103.4% of the fastest time, when the 107% rule used to eliminate drivers on a regular basis.</p>
<p>He struggled during the race. After a good start, he was obviously spooked by being surrounded by other cars on lap 1 and spun. He then panicked in the pitlane, seemingly allowing Romain Grosjean to overtake him before he crossed the white line. And he had a worryingly erratic second stint. But overall, <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/08/luca-badoers-race-lap-analysis.html">Badoer showed improvement</a> as the race progressed, and noticeably caught up with Räikkönen&#8217;s pace as the race progressed and Badoer became more comfortable.</p>
<p>In sum, yes, Badoer had a very disappointing weekend. But that is mostly because driving standards are so high these days. You don&#8217;t have to go far to find real joke drivers who definitely did not deserve to be racing and did a much worse job than Badoer.</p>
<p>I grew up watching people people who paid to get a race seat trundle around up to a dozen seconds per lap off the pace. Hell, you only have to go back a few years to encounter and Yuji Ide, who suffered the ignominy of being stripped of his super license. The last pay driver went when Sakon Yamamoto lost his seat. Driving standards all the way through the grid are very high compared with ten or even five years ago. This amplifies Badoer&#8217;s rustiness.</p>
<p>Badoer&#8217;s performance in Valencia is the sort of thing that would have been commonplace at the back of the grid in the mid-1990s. You might say that this is not the mid-1990s, but when you consider everything that is stacked against Luca Badoer &#8212; his age, his lack of experience, never having driven the F60 before, never having been to the Valencia Street Circuit before, and having to get used to the modern-day race weekend environment &#8212; I think he should be cut a bit more slack.</p>
<p>I feel very sorry for Badoer, who has had a very tough F1 career where he has been given the rough end of the stick at almost every turn. It looks likely that Badoer will be replaced come Monza, which would be fair enough if he doesn&#8217;t show a perceptible improvement in Spa.</p>
<p>But now Badoer will probably be remembered for these two difficult races where he was thrown in at the deep end, and everyone decided to point and laugh at this man (who, do not forget, is actually putting his life on the line when he goes out to race). I am not sure whether this is better than being remembered for breaking down in tears at his previous European Grand Prix, in 1999.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Even in this most interesting of races, at the most interesting of times, with all sorts of interesting rule changes and an interesting off-season, one of the most fascinating things about the weekend was the television coverage. After a gap of 12 years, F1 returned to BBC television.</p>
<p>Although ITV undoubtedly raised the bar, F1 fans were always frustrated by the need to interrupt the race to show adverts. So in this sense alone, the BBC&#8217;s coverage is superior. But apart from that given, how did the BBC do in their first race back? Very well in my view. They are not quite as slick as ITV were. But you would expect that in their first broadcast.</p>
<p>First things first. <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7969481.stm">The title sequence</a>. There was much rejoicing when it was confirmed that &#8216;The Chain&#8217; would indeed be the theme tune. But on first viewing I thought the title sequence was a bit naff. However, it has grown on me a lot after repeat viewings. And as <a href="http://twitter.com/neiltc13/status/1406438201">neiltc13 pointed out to me on Twitter</a>, it&#8217;s not half as naff as ITV&#8217;s title sequence from the past few years.</p>
<p>It is no accident that the two people who seemed most at ease during the broadcast were Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz. Both now have several years of broadcasting F1 on ITV under their belt, and it is very much business as usual. The only difference for them is the logo on their shirts.</p>
<p>I have seen a lot of complaints about the new main commentator, Jonathan Legard, which I think are completely unwarranted. The most ridiculous criticism comes from <a href="http://www.planetf1.com/story/0,18954,3265_5118237,00.html">Planet Hamilton</a>, which spat: &#8220;what do you expect from the BBC&#8217;s 2008 Football Correspondent.&#8221; Amusing of them to talk about someone being ill-informed, while spelling their name incorrectly throughout.</p>
<p>Jonathan Legard may have been the &#8220;BBC&#8217;s 2008 Football Correspondent&#8221; (actually, he was Radio 5 Live&#8217;s football correspondent from 2004 until getting the F1 gig). But before that he was Radio 5 Live&#8217;s motorsport correspondent and main Formula 1 commentator, a role he held for eight seasons. He has also written about F1 for newspapers. So those people assuming Legard does not know enough about F1 are saying more about their own ignorance.</p>
<p>The real problem with Legard&#8217;s commentary at the moment is that he is used to commentating on the radio, which requires quite a different style. Some rustiness was also to be expected since he hasn&#8217;t commentated on a Formula 1 race since 2004. But the fact is that he is one of Britain&#8217;s most experienced Formula 1 broadcasters. He was always going to be near the top of the list of candidates.</p>
<p>Legard was clearly nervous during qualifying, but this is perfectly understandable. This is a big gig, and the spotlight was on him. After the shaky qualifying performance though, Legard seemed much more at ease during the race.</p>
<p>It is true that there is a lack of chemistry between Legard and Martin Brundle, but this is something that will develop over time. The pairing will need a few races to get used to each other&#8217;s rhythm, then they will begin to gel much better.</p>
<p>At points Legard seemed strangely lost for words. Two such moments stood out for me. One was when it became clear that Heikki Kovalainen&#8217;s car was damaged, at which point Legard simply started repeating the driver&#8217;s name a number of times. The other was when Fisichella missed his pit box, when Legard just said, &#8220;Oh dear. Dear, dear.&#8221; That didn&#8217;t add much to our understanding of the situation.</p>
<p>But I felt that Legard read the race very well, especially when you consider he has not had to do it since 2004. He was very quick to spot that the soft tyres were simply not working. When Brundle said he thought that Kubica was managing the soft tyres well, Legard was instantly able to point out that Kubica&#8217;s lap times had actually become very slow, at which point the Pole peeled into the pits. Legard read this unfolding situation much better than Brundle did, which is no mean feat.</p>
<p>Lee McKenzie also seemed very good for her first live F1 television broadcast. She has plenty of experience in other categories of motorsport though. Jake Humphrey is a seriously good television presenter, and despite worries about his knowledge of the sport he actually seems pretty clued up. As an anchor, I find it difficult to see how he could be bettered.</p>
<p>David Coulthard and Eddie Jordan do not yet have the chemistry to cope with each other, though they both have plenty of opinions. Unfortunately, Eddie Jordan simply does not know when to stop gassing on. He was constantly interrupting his colleagues and, frankly, he hogged the airtime.</p>
<p>David Coulthard seemed almost intimidated by it, and seemed to give up even chiming in towards the end of the broadcast. Sometimes I thought Jordan made good points, but he does shoot from the hip a bit too much. Overall, he was an obnoxious presence, and I hope the BBC manage to rein him in.</p>
<p>DC needs to be encouraged to speak more. He is a good speaker, with interesting opinions and an ability to relay that to the viewers. But he&#8217;s not as natural as Martin Brundle and does seem slightly wooden for the time being. As the only person on the BBC television team with recent driving experience, he needs to be used more.</p>
<p>Whatever, it is good to have a couple of pundits with forthright opinions. This is a world away from ITV, where the post-race analysis was utterly bland in comparison. Steve Rider is a competent enough presenter, but he now seems staid in comparison to Jake Humphrey. Meanwhile, Mark Blundell&#8217;s punditry was seldom insightful, and he was often little more than Steve Rider&#8217;s yes-man. What a change, then, to see some energetic debate on the BBC!</p>
<p>As for the production of the programme, I think this is also promising. While ITV&#8217;s programme was nauseatingly biased in favour of Lewis Hamilton, the BBC seem to have struck a much better balance. In fairness, given McLaren&#8217;s woes, the BBC doesn&#8217;t have much space to hype up Hamilton, but the coverage of Button&#8217;s win didn&#8217;t seem overly patriotic either.</p>
<p>Some of the features were a lot more interesting than what ITV came up with. The piece about Mark Webber&#8217;s recovery certainly towers above &#8220;Cooking with Heikki&#8221;. I think fans will be much more comfortable with the BBC programme.</p>
<p>I was initially disappointed that the BBC decided to send Jake Humphrey, DC and EJ to the race, where they were left trying to scream above the loud cars and, at the worst moments, aeroplanes. This does not make for good viewing, and was one of the worst aspects of ITV&#8217;s coverage. I was surprised that the BBC did not try to avert this, particularly in light of ITV&#8217;s experiences. Rumour has it that the BBC has farmed off GP2 coverage in order to fund this, so I was not happy.</p>
<p>However, the programme absolutely came into its own during the &#8216;Interactive Forum&#8217; on the red button. This gives enthusiasts the chance to indulge in an hour-long post-race discussion. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this element of the coverage. It is a very welcome innovation. It makes sending the pundits to the races worth it, as they were able to conduct interviews, and Martin Brundle was able to join in the conversation.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the analysis appears to have been totally ghettoised to the red button. Lee McKenzie was hardly used at all during the race, and I felt we should have heard a lot more from her. Meanwhile, neither the race re-run nor the BBC Three highlights programme had anything in the way of post-race analysis whatsoever, and very very little in terms of interviews. This is one thing that ITV was much better at, and I hope the BBC will reconsider this approach for future races.</p>
<p>Another thing that was better about ITV&#8217;s coverage was the fact that their online stream switched away from the ITV1 feed to show the FOM World Feed. This option was nowhere to be seen on the BBC&#8217;s website, which meant that viewers didn&#8217;t see the full press conference or the FOM-produced highlights package.</p>
<p>The other interactive elements of the F1 coverage are what really brings the BBC into its own. All practice sessions are being shown on television (via the red button) for the first time, which is excellent.</p>
<p>During the race there is, for the first time in the UK (with the exception of F1 Digital+), the option to watch a dedicated on-board channel. This is the sort of coverage that a couple of countries in Europe get on pay per view. We are very lucky to get this stuff for free in the UK.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the option seemed to be suffering from some technical problems. The caption telling you which driver we were on board with failed very early on, and never returned. The rolling leaderboard and news updates also did not display for a while. Meanwhile, the insert that shows the world feed was almost too small to be of any real use. Personally, I would prefer the on board channel to be full screen, but that is because I had two screens. It is true that I didn&#8217;t often watch the on board channel, but I may make more use of it in more processional races (so it&#8217;ll come in useful for Valencia).</p>
<p>The other interactive channel is taken up with rolling highlights. This seems to be a staple of BBC Sport coverage, but I personally don&#8217;t see the point of it. I won&#8217;t stop watching the race to watch highlights, knowing that I might miss something happening live. Presumably people use it though, since the BBC often offer it for many sports.</p>
<p>Another novel feature is the option to choose your audio. Those worried about the lack of chemistry between Jonathan Legard and Martin Brundle can opt to listen instead to Radio 5 Live&#8217;s David Croft and Anthony Davidson, who get on like a house on fire.</p>
<p>There is also a CBBC commentary, but I don&#8217;t see this lasting. There was one slightly amusing moment when the CBBC commentators pretended they had a microphone inside the Safety Car and decided to listen into the conversation:</p>

<p>It&#8217;s obviously designed to be used during a boring moment while the Safety Car is out, so it&#8217;s just a shame Fisichella&#8217;s pit lane mess-up happened while it was being played! A nice humorous touch though. I can&#8217;t help but think the CBBC commentary is a waste of money and bandwidth though.</p>
<p>All-in-all, the BBC&#8217;s coverage had a few teething problems, but this was absolutely to be expected. Most of the problems so far are quite minor and I envisage that they will be sorted soon enough. We really are very lucky to be getting such great coverage in the UK now.</p>
