<p>This has been a turbulent week for Williams. Sam Michael has resigned as the team&#8217;s technical director. Along with him, chief aerodynamicist Jon Tomlinson will also go. The team&#8217;s Chairman Adam Parr also offered his resignation. It is a sign of just how desperate things have become after Williams have hit yet another new low at the start of this season.</p>
<p>But the recent moves just the latest in a Williams team that seems to endlessly change its shape. I am far from a business expert. Far be it from me to tell Williams that they are doing it wrong. But from the outside, it does sometimes seem like a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth.</p>
<p>Who calls the shots at Williams? It&#8217;s hard to say. There are the five names I listed above. To that list, you can now add the public shareholders, whose views also surely have some sway.</p>
<p>This too many cooks phenomenon appeared to be underlined by the apparent confusion over whether or not it has been announced that Patrick Head is planning on retiring within the next year. Adam Parr had announced it, but it appears as though he jumped the gun.</p>
<p>The Guardian went as far as to describe it as <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/may/03/williams-mike-coughlan-spygate">&#8220;open conflict&#8221;</a>.</p>
<blockquote><p>In a conference call Parr told reporters: &#8220;Patrick has made it clear that he will be retiring this year. That&#8217;s nothing to do with the restructuring, it&#8217;s just the fact that he&#8217;s turning 65 and had already signalled that it&#8217;s time for him to move on to his next set of interests in life.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Head has since denied Parr&#8217;s claims, saying: &#8220;What you are telling me is news to me. I wasn&#8217;t aware that Adam had said that.</p>
<p>&#8220;He wasn&#8217;t in a position to make that statement. My plans are not in the public domain and they will only be when I make my own statement later in the year.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Ouch.</p>
<p>Adam Parr is obviously good at his job. That is clear from the fact that Williams did not accept his resignation offer. But does he overstep his remit?</p>
<p>People who read F1 news websites will be highly familiar with Adam Parr. He is chairman now, but even as CEO he was a very prominent figure in Williams. He is constantly in the news, providing everyone with information about what&#8217;s going on at Williams.</p>
<p>But how many could name Mr Parr&#8217;s predecessor as CEO? It is Chris Chapple. He wasn&#8217;t in the job long, but nevertheless the point remains that I had never heard of him. I have not even been able to find out who was the head of finance at Williams before then. How many could tell you who the current CEO is? (It&#8217;s Alex Burns.)</p>
<p>As part of this picture, what is the role of Frank Williams? Of Patrick Head? How about Toto Wolff, who bought a share of Williams last year? He appears to exert a fair bit of influence too &#8212; he was making <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90901">rumblings in the press</a> last week just before the turmoil truly began.</p>
<p>I think with most other teams you could name one or two people that are so prominent within a team. From the outside, it is not a clear structure. At McLaren, for instance, you can say the buck stops with Martin Whitmarsh. But where does it stop at Williams?</p>
<p>This is probably as a result of an attempted handover. It is about preparing for &#8212; or reacting to &#8212; a time when Frank Williams and Patrick Head have less energy and motivation than they had in the 1980s and 1990s when Williams could be world-beaters.</p>
<p>But the handover seems to have been botched &#8212; and the picture only gets more complicated as time goes on. Have the money men taken over from those that love racing and want to win? I was interested in a point made by Todd over at Formula1Blog.com. <a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/2011/05/02/its-williams-attitude-not-sam-michael/">They seem to be settling for sixth</a> in order to meet their business obligations and no more.</p>
<p>Clearly this is a difficult time for Williams. Yet more change is in the works. I hope they can get it right soon, because no-one wants to see Williams doing so badly.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the past week or so, rumours that big changes are afoot at Williams have been ramping up.</p>
<p>Last week when I saw that a German website had written about this, I prepared a simple but telling graph looking at the form of Williams over the years. But I refrained from publishing it in case my conclusions were overly harsh.</p>
<p>But today the team&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90865">technical director Sam Michael has come out</a> and said for himself that the recent performance of Williams is not good enough.</p>
<blockquote><p>What I would not be happy with doing would be not changing anything – even myself. Even if everyone said everything is perfect, I know it is not. So, I am not happy with the job that we have done as a group. I would review that anyway – including myself. I don&#8217;t exclude myself from any of that.</p>
<p>I, as technical director, have chosen the technical team that works for me&#8230; They are all people that I have chosen to put in those positions, so if it doesn&#8217;t work then it is my responsibility.</p></blockquote>
<p>This is refreshing honesty. It is no secret that Williams&#8217;s form has been disappointing in the last few years. But it has never been properly confronted.</p>
<p>In the light of Sam Michael&#8217;s comments, here is the graph. It tracks the Constructors&#8217; Championship positions of Williams throughout its 32 years in Formula 1. Alongside the annual positions, I have added a five-year rolling average to allow us to see the longer term trends.</p>

<p>It is well-known that Williams has always been a highly successful grand prix team. The 1980s were a bit of a rollercoaster. The team mixed hugely successful years with a few more disappointing years. Overall, the trend has been for the team to hover around 3rd place on average.</p>
<p>Then came the mid-1990s, when Williams were truly dominant. This was the period where Adrian Newey was on board. It is almost impossible for the five-year trend to get any higher, as the team strung together an incredible seven consecutive top-two finishes.</p>
<p>It is no secret that Williams have never dominated in this way ever since Adrian Newey left in 1997. But looking at the trend, Williams continued to average around 3rd place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship &#8212; if anything, still slightly better than the pre-Adrian Newey years. But in the middle of the 2000s, it begins to change for the worse &#8212; dramatically.</p>
<p>In fact, if you look at the trendline, with no other knowledge I think you could actually guess when Sam Michael became technical director. In case you haven&#8217;t spotted it, I have added a subtle hint that pinpoints the year.</p>

<p>This could well be a harsh assessment. Sam Michael seems to be well respected among his colleagues at Williams. But from the outside, it has long perplexed me why there hasn&#8217;t been more of a question mark over Sam Michael&#8217;s role.</p>
<p>The team has made many changes in recent years. They have switched engine manufacturers from BMW to Cosworth via Toyota. They have brought on board hugely experienced drivers (Alexander Wurz, Rubens Barrichello) along with promising rookies (Nico Rosberg, Nico Hülkenberg). And there have been lots of changes behind the scenes with the operation of the business. None of these changes have done the trick.</p>
<p>Now, with Williams enduring their worst start to an F1 season since their very first one in 1978, it is crunch time. They need to face up to their issues properly.</p>
<p>We know the problem is not money. After all, the team keeps telling us they have no money worries whatsoever!</p>
<p>Currently the team languishes in 10th place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, behind Lotus, a team that is not yet two years old. Indeed, in China, Pastor Maldonado was beaten fair and square by Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus.</p>
<p>Amazingly, this position is <em>up</em> from the situation after Malaysia, when the team was also behind Virgin in the Constructors&#8217; Championship. Virgin is another team looking carefully at its technical set-up, as Nick Wirth&#8217;s CFD-only approach fails to prove its worth.</p>
<p>Here, just for fun, is the graph of Williams&#8217;s Constructors&#8217; Championship positions with their current 10th place for 2011 added.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I can hardly believe we are already more than halfway through the Formula 1 season. It has gone by so quickly. Normally I look at the performances of the drivers at the halfway point. But this year I haven&#8217;t felt as able to keep on top of everything, so instead I will look at the constructors.</p>
<h3>12. Hispania</h3>
<p>Of the three new teams, Hispania have probably had the hardest job after taking over the Campos entry at the eleventh hour after it hit severe financial difficulties. Although their car is probably the slowest, it does not have the poorest reliability record, and as such the team currently sits ahead of Virgin in the Constructors&#8217; Championship. Hispania have also acted quickly to sort out the problems with the Dallara chassis, and have hired big name designer Geoff Willis to sort out the mess for next season.</p>
<p>However, recent musical chairs involving their drivers have left a sour taste in the mouth. Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok are both well-liked drivers who have done an admirable job in hugely difficult circumstances, even though you might say neither is a potential future World Champion. Sakon Yamamoto is not liked very much, and is not terribly good as demonstrated in his previous two stints in F1. But the team appear to be desperate to get him into the car nevertheless. The process has been handled appallingly.</p>
<h3>11. Virgin</h3>
<p>On the track, Virgin is probably the least exciting of the new teams. Their reliability record is poor, and the speed is not particularly impressive, even if they occasionally manage to beat a Lotus every once in a while.</p>
<p>On the plus side, their controversial approach to design the car without the use of a wind tunnel has proved the doubters wrong, as the car has not been disastrously off the pace.</p>
<p>Both drivers have shown flashes of brilliance. But you sense that Timo Glock in particular would be capable of more if only he had decent equipment.</p>
<h3>10. Lotus</h3>
<p>Lotus have very quickly established themselves as the fastest of the new teams. But it has not all been plain sailing for them, and their reliability record needs improvement. I also wonder how much better they would be doing if they had two better race drivers than Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen, although the experienced line-up is probably ideal in a development sense.</p>
<p>The next target for Lotus is to start beating the established teams on a regular basis. But with Williams and Sauber both having made significant improvements recently, it is difficult to see how they can make much headway beyond battling with Toro Rosso. Whatever, next year will be important for Lotus &#8212; anything below ninth in the 2011 Constructors&#8217; Championship would surely be a disappointment. But that just shows how far they have come already.</p>
<h3>9. Williams</h3>
<p>Although they have begun to make strides up the grid in the past few races, the fact remains that this has been <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/05/26/what-went-wrong-with-williams/">another disastrous year for Williams</a>. They have spent much of the season battling at the wrong end of the grid, counting Sauber and Toro Rosso among their rivals.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most worrying thing is that when you hear the likes of Patrick Head and Sam Michael try to explain the team&#8217;s performance over the past few years, they seem to be at a loss, except for vaguely talking about money being an issue. Williams lack answers.</p>
<p>Rubens Barrichello has been doing more or less the sort of job you would expect him to do. Meanwhile, promising rookie Nico Hülkenberg has not shown as much promise as you might have hoped. This has been coupled with a heavy dose of bad luck. I hope the second half of the season is better for Hülkenberg, of whom I am a fan.</p>
<h3>8. Toro Rosso</h3>
<p>I am finding it difficult to draw any firm conclusions about Toro Rosso yet. They have had some very poor showings indeed. But on the plus side, you must remember that this is their first year as a &#8216;proper&#8217; constructor, designing their own chassis. On this basis, this season must be regarded as a success, even if they have not always been as quick as they may have liked.</p>
<p>Both Jaime Alguersuari and Sébastien Buemi are continuing to improve. Alguersuari has shown some real flashes of brilliance, and has impressed me a lot this season &#8212; particularly in a couple of battles with Michael Schumacher!</p>
<p>But with a more anonymous season, Buemi has been keeping his nose clean and has picked up the majority of the team&#8217;s points haul so far. That is mainly due to his assured performance at Canada, where he did well standing his ground as he briefly led the race as the pitstop phase was shaking itself out.</p>
<h3>7. Sauber</h3>
<p>After a promising winter testing season, the start of the actual season itself was deeply embarrassing for Sauber as they totally failed to convert pre-season promise into real race results. The car was not only frightfully slow, but it was also horrendously unreliable, making Sauber easily the worst of the established teams.</p>
<p>A question mark also hung over the choice of drivers, probably the riskiest on the grid. The decision to opt for Pedro de la Rosa, who had not raced since 2006, was bizarre &#8212; and I am a fan of de la Rosa! Meanwhile, Kamui Kobayashi was a man whose entire reputation was built on two races in odd circumstances.</p>
<p>The good news is that Sauber have turned the corner. de la Rosa is not making a fool of himself, and only needs more luck now in order to start scoring points. Meanwhile, Kobayashi looks set to become a points-scoring regular now. His performance in Valencia was absolutely superb, and he backed this up with another solid performance at Silverstone.</p>
<p>Sauber have also acted quickly to improve the car, making the decision to hire James Key early on as the car&#8217;s deficiencies became clear. The improvements he has made since joining the team can be seen vividly in the results.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The final part of the factory tour was the chance to see the simulator. It is an impressive piece of kit. The driver sits in a cockpit, surrounded by a massive screen that curves round to take up his entire field of vision.</p>
<p>Little wonder it has been known to induce sickness. Drivers are advised that they may want to close eyes if they spin in order to avoid reacquainting themselves with their lunch. Apparently drivers have been known to be sick all over the place while driving the simulator. Come to think of it, I&#8217;m slightly suspicious because I remember that the cleaner was leaving the room just as we were entering it. We were told, though, that Kazuki Nakajima is amazing in the simulator and can spend all day in it with no ill effects.</p>
<p>The circuit models are said to be very accurate indeed, albeit some more accurate than others. For instance, someone else has exclusive rights to the best map of the Nürburgring. The maps are constructed using lasers. A van drives slowly around the circuit emitting laser beams at multiple angles, creating a map of millions of dots. This means that every bump on the circuit is accounted for.</p>
<p>An aerial image of the circuit is then overlaid on top of these dots to create the environment. But if you look at the circuit, some of the landmarks are not very accurately reproduced. In fact, some of it looks like bad virtual reality graphics. The idea is to reduce any confusion that might be caused by too many cues. If they don&#8217;t think something will give a driver an accurate cue, they won&#8217;t implement it.</p>
<p>Some teams have more sophisticated simulators. In some simulators the car will be on a moving platform to give the impression of movement &#8212; something clearly lacking from the still Williams cockpit. It is said that some simulators even have belts that tighten up to give you some impression of <i>g</i>-forces. Williams shun such devices, which they regard as off-putting.</p>
<p>I have to confess that I have been slightly sceptical about the Williams simulator in the past. McLaren&#8217;s is said to be amazing, but it is jealously kept under wraps from outsiders. Williams have no such qualms however. It is the only simulator that I have seen on television. See, for instance, this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B7rvj1GaAg">ITV video with Mark Blundell</a> and this <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/newsbeat/newsid_7965000/7965045.stm">BBC video</a>.</p>
<p>We were lucky enough to be in the room when occasional Williams tester Daniel Clos was driving it. He was there to acquaint himself with the Hungaroring in preparation for the GP2 races which were being held just a few days later. I have to say he didn&#8217;t look very good while we were there, and he even spun at one point. But those must have been his very first laps round the circuit and of course I am in no position to pass comment. In the real thing, he finished 11th in both races.</p>
<p>It is presumably a service that Williams are happy to offer young drivers in the hope of developing them into a Formula 1 star of the future. Whether Daniel Clos is one remains to be seen. But surely on his way to F1 stardom is another Williams tester, Nico Hülkenberg. Simulator Engineer Jeff Calam is adamant that the simulator is a worthwhile piece of equipment to invest in, pointing at Hülkenberg&#8217;s highly impressive GP2 results at circuits he hasn&#8217;t driven at before. This fact puts to bed my doubts about the quality of the Williams simulator.</p>
<p>Once the factory tour was over, we had a Q&#038;A with Sam Michael. He was largely very open in his responses, and came across very well to me. I was impressed that he took the time out of his schedule to talk to a bunch of bloggers. <p>After that, we went for a tour of the fabulous Williams museum. Here, we were expertly guided by Scott Garrett from Synergy, the company that arranged our visit on behalf of Philips. Although he now works for Synergy, he was previously Head of Marketing at Williams and now has links with a number of F1 teams. This makes him a highly knowledgeable speaker on Formula 1, and Williams in particular. It was a real pleasure to have this sort of insight.</p>
<p>For obvious reasons, photography was strictly forbidden in the factory, but we were free to take as many photographs as we wanted in the museum. And boy did we take the opportunity!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766705940/in/set-72157621875349228/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2629/3766705940_efd810d39b_m.jpg" alt="Early Williams cars" style="float:right;" /></a> The museum is impressive, with a range of cars from the full history of the Williams team&#8217;s existence. The first car you see is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766701380/in/set-72157621875349228/">Alan Jones&#8217;s FW06</a> with its <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3765914527/in/set-72157621875349228/">Ford Cosworth engine peering out the back</a>. Cars are displayed, more or less a car for every year, right up to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766777294/in/set-72157621875349228/">2007&#8242;s FW29</a> &#8212; the very car that the competition winner will be driving.</p>
<p>All-in-all, the museum contains over forty cars. We are told that Frank Williams is a hoarder. The team still owns 106 chassis, while it only makes around six per year. Most of these cars are well looked after and can theoretically still be driven. The main exception is the Honda-powered cars, because they asked for the engines back!</p>
<p>For the most part, the cars are laid out in chronological order, and as you make your way through the museum videos are played telling us about Williams during the period of the cars in the vicinity. The relevant cars are lit up while the video is playing.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, this means that they are plunged into darkness once the video is finished, and you are supposed to move along to the next section. It is a pretty clever device to get us to keep moving and get rid of us quickly, but quite annoying for those of us who would have liked to have done it at our own pace. One person sarcastically remarked under his breath, &#8220;you have a lot of great cars, then put them in the dark.&#8221; It is for this reason that the lighting is not very good in some of the photographs.</p>
<p>Despite the chronological layout of the museum, there is still a fairly clear centrepiece. Two cars in particular are displayed on a higher plinth &#8212; the FW18 and the FW19, the team&#8217;s latest two championship-winning cars from 1996 and 1997 driven by Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.</p>

<p>A great moment of F1 geekery occurred when Mr Garrett pointed out that the FW19 on display is the actual car which Michael Schumacher famously crashed into at Jerez in 1997. Everyone went &#8220;oooh&#8221; and inquisitively gathered to look at this particularly historic Williams F1 car. The damage is still evident. I had heard that Patrick Head liked the car to be displayed with the tyre mark still there, but it has since been restored and now just looks like a couple of holes have been punched in the corner of the sidepod.</p>

<p>&#8220;We never got on very well with Michael Schumacher,&#8221; Scott Garrett noted, just in case we didn&#8217;t get the clue. This prompted a cheeky question from someone else, &#8220;How did you get on with Ralf?&#8221;</p>
<p>There is a notable omission. The most distinctive F1 car in the team&#8217;s history, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_FW26">FW26</a> with the &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; is nowhere to be seen. It is perhaps not the team&#8217;s proudest design.</p>
<p>One unusual design does proudly feature though. Williams were never able to race with their FW08B six-wheeler. It was banned by the FIA before the season started over fears that it would be too dominant.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766128837/in/set-72157621875349228/"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3596/3766128837_c7299c77a6_m.jpg" alt="Keke Rosberg's record-breaking FW10" style="float:right;" /></a> Go up the stairs, and you will see two cars that are clearly very special to the team. One is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766124141/in/set-72157621875349228/">Ayrton Senna&#8217;s test car from 1994</a>. The other is the record-breaking FW10, in which Keke Rosberg was the first person ever to set a lap at a speed of 160mph in 1985. The record was set at Silverstone and remarkably stayed in place until 2002!</p>
<p>All-in-all, it was an absolutely fantastic day. Although Williams are not among my favourite teams, they have got to be admired for being so accommodating to us. If you ever get the chance to attend such an event, I would highly recommend it. A massive thank you to those who organised it and invited me.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be invited on a visit to the Williams F1 factory. It was all organised by Synergy on behalf of Philips, who wanted to promote their amazing competition for a chance to <a href="http://www.philips.com/attwilliams">win five laps round a grand prix circuit in a Williams F1 car</a>, which I <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/29/win-a-chance-to-drive-a-williams-f1-car/">previously wrote about here</a>.</p>
<p>I had the pleasure of meeting a host of other F1 bloggers including the people behind <a href="http://www.britsonpole.com/">Brits on Pole</a>, <a href="http://www.f1badger.com/">F1 Badger</a>, <a href="http://www.f1-fans.co.uk/">F1-Fans</a> and <a href="http://f1fanatics.wordpress.com/">F1 &#8220;Not Keith&#8221; Fanatics</a>. Most of them have got round to covering the visit much more sooner than I did. Brits on Pole have been particularly thorough.</p>

<p>It was a big trip for me. Believe it or not, it&#8217;s the first time I&#8217;ve done anything F1-related. I&#8217;ve never found the time or money to do anything in the past, but luckily this time round I happened to have some free time, so made the trip down from Kirkcaldy to Grove, where the Williams factory is based. I am mighty glad I did because I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and in fact I wish I could go again so that I could immerse myself in it more.</p>
<p>When I arrived at the factory, the last of the Williams trucks was just leaving to make its way to the Hungaroring. It&#8217;s a very inconspicuous, even modest-looking, place. If you didn&#8217;t know better you might think you were in a plain old industrial estate.</p>
<p>It might be silly to expect a giant rotating &#8216;W&#8217; symbol to be sprouting out of the roof of the factory, but the fact is that all signage is minimal, almost as though they want to avoid attracting attention. This is no super-slick McLaren Technology Centre. That is the Williams way though. They care more about the racing than whether the floor is clean.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not to say the place totally lacks character. Walking up to the RBS Williams F1 Conference Centre, you are greeted with this jolly topiary. It is a very nice touch, suggesting that perhaps F1 does have a green side after all! I also note that the display is 2010-friendly as there is no refuelling.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766935016/in/set-72157621875349228/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2663/3766935016_fc4d7decca_m.jpg" alt="Villeneuve's FW19" style="float:right;" /></a> The Conference Centre is relatively new, having opened in 2002. It used to be where BMW worked on their Le Mans project in the late 1990s when Williams were in partnership with them. But once BMW won Le Mans they vacated the building, and was left behind after their acrimonious split.</p>
<p>Many of the rooms at the Conference Centre are named after famous circuits. We were housed in Monaco and Silverstone! The morning kicked off with an excellent breakfast, which was just as well because the breakfast I paid five quid for at the Travelodge was a bloody insult. Nothing could be further from the case at Williams, who also provided a sublime buffet lunch that seemed to go down well with everyone.</p>
<p>After breakfast we were given a whistle-stop tour of the factory. Once again, it is striking just how <em>normal</em> the place feels. It looks, sounds and smells like a factory. There is little hint of pomposity about the place. They could be making widgets, but they just happen to make F1 cars. A radio sits in the corner, apparently tuned into the local radio station.</p>
<p>Our first stop was in the Pattern Shop where Brian Campbell gave us a great talk about seat fittings. I knew that each driver had to have his own seat specially made for him, but I did not realise quite how detailed the seats actually were. As Mr Campbell said, he can see which side a driver is dressed into. We were also told about the fact that new seats had to be made when Juan Pablo Montoya gained around 10 kilograms in weight in the course of a season, at the same time blowing away the myth about how fit Formula 1 drivers are.</p>
<p>We were given a seat to pass around, and I guess it is probably about as heavy as a similarly-sized cardboard box. Brits on Pole were in a different group to mine, so got a slightly different talk, but you can hear audio of their version <a href="http://www.britsonpole.com/in-depth/behind-the-scenes/behind-the-scenes-at-williams-f1">on this page</a>.</p>
<p>From there we moved onto composites, where our wonderful tour guide Millie looked for Paul who was due to give us our next talk, only to be told that there are eight Pauls! It was another entertaining talk. At one point he consulted a blueprint to answer a question, noting, &#8220;you&#8217;re not supposed to see that&#8221;. Minds flashed back to the McLaren&#8211;Ferrari &#8220;spygate&#8221; scandal, which we are later told Williams staff found very amusing all the way even when the rest of the world had got fed up with it. They can&#8217;t stand either team, of course.</p>
<p>From there we met Bernie (no, not <em>that</em> Bernie!) in the machine shop. He is the longest-serving member of staff besides Frank Williams and Patrick Head. He will have seen a lot of changes &#8212; Williams was set up in 1977 with just 17 staff. Today it employs 520 people.</p>
<p>The culture of Williams is noticeable. Frank Williams and Patrick Head are clearly very well-regarded by all staff members. They are not Mr Williams or Mr Head &#8212; it&#8217;s Frank and Patrick. In the later Q&#038;A, Sam Michael said he liked working for the company because of Frank and Patrick.</p>
<p>Back on the factory floor, Bernie tells us that 95% of the car &#8212; more or less everything except for the engine and the wheels &#8212; is made in-house by Williams. We were given a variety of bits and bobs to feel. This ranged from a wheel nut which is as large as an ashtray but felt as light as a 50p piece, to a proprietary alloy which is used as ballast. Apparently this the most dense material in the world with the exception of depleted uranium.</p>

<p>My next post was going to look at F1 websites. But this week <a href="http://blogf1.co.uk/2007/12/13/f1-podcasts-do-you-listen-to-them/">Ollie White wrote a post about podcasts</a>, so I thought I would move my post on podcasts to this week.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m a relative newcomer to podcasts. As a concept, they have grown much more quickly than blogging and I would bet that &#8216;podcast&#8217; is more of a household word than &#8216;blog&#8217; already. But they never really grabbed my attention because, for me, they are rather inconvenient to listen to, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2007/06/07/f1-podcasting-and-blogging/">as I wrote a few months back</a>.</p>
<p>Since I wrote that post, I have transformed into a big fan of podcasts though. This was partly because I replaced my <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2007/03/20/thumbs-up-for-iriver/">ageing</a> <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2005/03/26/iriver-h340/">iRiver</a> with a brand spanking new iPod.</p>
<p>I have to say, mega thumbs up to the people at Apple who have made keeping up with podcasts so easy! The iPod takes away so much of the hassle that existed with my old iRiver.</p>
<p>At first I only listened to podcasts on my commute through to university. But soon enough I found myself subscribing to more and more podcasts and not having enough time to listen to them all. Now I am such a podcast addict that I actually set aside some time every day to listen to them by going out for a walk (with the added benefits of exercise and fresh air that this brings).</p>
<p>So, from my mild scepticism in the late summer, I have turned into a full-on podcast addict. And right at the top of the list comes the F1 podcasts that I have gradually discovered. This post will review my favourites. They are listed in alphabetical order, in case you&#8217;re wondering.</p>
<h3>AT&#038;T Williams Podcast</h3>
<p>As far as I know, Williams is one of only two Formula 1 teams who produced podcasts this year. Maybe it&#8217;s just me, but I would never have expected Williams to be so hip. They always seemed like a team that is mainly supported by middle-aged men, the kind of people who prefer Fifth Gear to Top Gear.</p>
<p>Maybe this is actually the case, because for me the Williams podcast is the least fulfilling of my regular listens. It is produced by <a href="http://www.usp-group.com/record.jsp?type=project&#038;ID=10">USP Content</a> &#8212; the same people who produce the excellent programmes for Radio 5 Live and Renault&#8217;s podcast. But the Williams podcast misfires a bit.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s the problem? It&#8217;s just a bit too cheesy. It is a bit like a local radio programme. An example regular feature is &#8217;2007&#8242; (pronounced &#8216;twenty-oh-seven&#8217;) where presenter David Croft talks to Alexander Wurz at 8:07 PM on the Saturday before the race. I don&#8217;t know, but that is quite a hollow feature to me. Yeah, neat pun, but it&#8217;s a bit meaningless when you&#8217;re listening at whatever time you choose. Besides, we don&#8217;t even <em>know</em> that the interview was conducted at 8:07 PM and apart from that there was nothing much to the feature.</p>
<p>The interviews, conducted by Tom Clarkson, were normally a bit too fluffy for my liking. I can remember actually cringing at some of the questions. It is probably reasonably entertaining for some fans. But if you&#8217;re looking for insight and analysis it is best to look elsewhere.</p>
<p>Worst of all, some kind of glitch towards the end of the season meant that the podcasts weren&#8217;t getting delivered (at least to me &#8212; and I remember Sidepodcast mentioning a similar problem). The podcasts for Japan, China and Brazil all arrived on my iPod weeks after the season had finished. Does this mean that they were not getting published? To think about all the work that must have gone into producing them, only for them to be inaccessible until they were completely out of date.</p>
<p>All evidence that the Williams podcast existed seems to have been removed from the <a href="http://www.williamsf1.com/">Williams website</a>, which perhaps suggests that the podcast won&#8217;t be making a return next season. A <a href="http://uspaudio.co.uk/f1/attwilliamspodcast.html">list of old episodes is available on USP Content&#8217;s website</a> though, and <a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=219381969">the iTunes link is here</a>.</p>
<h3><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/podcasts/cff1/">Chequered Flag Formula 1</a></h3>
<p>The BBC&#8217;s Formula 1 podcast is one of the best for my money. The centrepiece programme is The Chequered Flag, which provides analysis soon after the end of every race. But when you subscribe to the feed you also receive other F1 programmes broadcast on Radio 5 Live including the race preview show and occasional editions of the 606 phone-in.</p>
<p>There is not much else to say apart from the obvious. I already covered Radio 5 Live&#8217;s coverage in <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2007/12/09/f1-season-review-broadcasts/">last week&#8217;s post</a>, and the same applies to the podcast. They contain excellent interviews and top-notch analysis. The kind of quality you expect from the BBC. Great stuff.</p>
<h3><a href="http://f1rejects.com/podcasts/index.html">F1 Rejects</a></h3>
<p>Direct from Australia comes the funniest F1 podcast I have come across.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://f1rejects.com/">website is dedicated to the &#8220;heroic failures&#8221; of Formula 1</a> &#8212; the people at the back of the grid who regularly put their lives at risk despite the fact that they have no hope of achieving any success. The podcast has a similar vibe, with a kind of attitude towards bad drivers that is a curious mixture of disgust and awe &#8212; an attitude that I broadly share.</p>
<p>But while the podcast revels in its celebration / castigation of F1&#8242;s rejects, it has plenty to say about the world of F1 in general. If you are looking for a humorous take on the world of F1, look no further. I have only been listening for a couple of episodes, but already F1 Rejects is one of my favourite podcasts.</p>
<h3><a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/?page_id=318">Formula 1 Blog</a></h3>
<p>On balance, this is probably my favourite Formula 1 podcast. It is American, which is an advantage because it doesn&#8217;t fall into the trap that Brits have fallen into by dividing into two camps &#8212; pro-Hamilton and anti-Hamilton. Formula 1 Blog is more neutral in this regard &#8212; a great dose of reality in this world of Hamilton hype and anti-hype.</p>
<p>But Formula 1 Blog certainly isn&#8217;t a neutral podcast, and it prides itself on being a journal of <em>opinion</em>. Negative Camber is a Ferrari fan (no, I don&#8217;t understand either) and his sidekick Grace is a McLaren fan. As a result, the banter between them is fantastic to listen to!</p>
<p>Negative Camber is also quite nifty at doing impressions. His impression of Patrick Head&#8217;s grumpy expression is hilarious and a couple of weeks back he did an impression of Ross Brawn that had me in stitches on the train. I do worry about his strange obsession with Matt Bishop though. Any discussion of a McLaren press release soon turns into a discussion about Matt Bishop and how he copes with wearing the grey McLaren uniform instead of his normal loud shirts.</p>
<p>The podcast also touches on other motor sports, particularly MotoGP and WRC. But the centrepiece of the podcast is F1.</p>
<p>The podcasts are a tad on the long side &#8212; typically lasting almost an hour. The long idents also grate a little bit. They are an entertaining listen the first time round, but after that it takes about two minutes from the start of the podcast until the actual discussion begins. Nevertheless, it is always an entertaining listen.</p>
<h3><a href="http://www.ing-renaultf1.com/en/search/results/gallery.php?ad=media_type=sound|Season=2007">ING Renault F1 Team Podcast</a></h3>
<p>Note to Williams: this is how you do an F1 team podcast!</p>
<p>The most astonishing thing about the Renault podcast is the fact that important people who probably have a lot on their plate take a great deal of time to appear on the podcast. After every race, Radio 5 Live presenter Holly Samos visits the Renault factory to make the podcast. It is a brilliant way for an F1 team to reach the fans.</p>
<p>Pat Symonds in particular should be applauded for his dedication. It is always worth listening to what he says, and he provides refreshingly honest answers. He has held his hands up and said that Renault produced a bad car this year, and he has been completely open about these faults on the podcast.</p>
<p>The interviews with the drivers are also worth listening to, as they manage to avoid the fluff and cheese of the Williams podcast. It is strange that both podcasts are produced by the same company, USP Content, as the difference in quality could hardly be more stark.</p>
<p>I really do hope that Renault continue the podcast next season. More teams should follow suit, and the Renault template should guide them because it really is top-notch stuff.</p>
<h3><a href="http://www.sidepodcast.com/">Sidepodcast</a></h3>
<p>This was the first F1 podcast I started listening to regularly, and I still loyally follow it.</p>
<p>I am in two minds about Sidepodcast, because I really like it when Christine and &#8216;me&#8217; have an opinionated discussion, but the more factual and newsy elements of the podcast are not my cup of tea. For instance, a lap-by-lap review of the race sends me to sleep because I already know what happened. After all, I watched the race. However, I can see how it could be useful for those who missed the race.</p>
<p>Sidepodcast should be applauded for its experimental variants on the format. From time to time, for instance, short series are produced. For instance, last week there was a series called &#8216;Days that Shook the F1 World&#8217; &#8212; a short daily podcast, each one focussing on a different pivotal moment in F1 history. Again, for me, these series are not so entertaining because I am personally the type who would rather delve into Wikipedia and books to find out more about such events.</p>

<p>There is a spin-off podcast called <a href="http://www.f1minute.com/">F1 Minute</a>. It is a daily, 60 second long podcast rounding up the day&#8217;s F1 news in brief. Again, for me, it is not very useful because I usually keep up with news using RSS feeds and I already know most of the stories featured in the podcast. Nevertheless, it must be an excellent resource for those who are unable to keep up with the news as much.</p>
<p>However, I am in awe at the Sidepodcast video podcasts, which are top quality previews of each race. How do they do it?</p>
<p>Sidepodcast should also be congratulated for offering podcasts in the &#8216;enhanced&#8217; format. These divide podcasts into DVD-style chapters. They also have the capacity to display images as the podcast is playing, which can be quite good if your are sitting around or in the train or something, although rather more off-putting if you&#8217;re going for a walk!</p>
<p>All-in-all, the content of Sidepodcast is not all my cup of tea. But in terms of effort, there is no doubt about it. Sidepodcast takes the crown.</p>
<p><strong>That&#8217;s it for my review of my favourite F1 podcasts.</strong> Does anyone have any other suggestions? 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fernando Alonso&#8217;s departure from McLaren is kind of old news now. But <a href="http://ponzonha.wordpress.com/">Ponzonha</a> <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2007/11/02/channel-4s-25th-anniversary/#comment-187210">asked me to write about it</a>, and I still have some views on it, so here they are.</p>
<p>I guess the first thing to point out is that Alonso&#8217;s departure from McLaren is not much of a surprise. There was still a cheeky part of my brain that was saying, &#8220;maybe Alonso can stay at McLaren after all.&#8221; But clearly the relationship between Alonso and the team had broken down irreparably. Despite a contract that said Alonso was going to be around for two more years, there was no way that was in the interests of either Alonso or McLaren.</p>
<p>The question then turns to what actually happened in the negotiations. Given that a contract existed, there must have been some kind of deal. Of course, McLaren and Alonso are trying to give the impression that they just discussed it and mutually decided to part ways. But few seem to believe that.</p>
<p>I doubt, however, that any deal involved money. A common theory is that Alonso is either not allowed to move to a &#8220;competitive&#8221; team or not allowed to move to a manufacturer team. I suppose another possibility is that Alonso will go on gardening leave for the two years until his McLaren contract runs out. But I doubt Alonso would want to sit out for two seasons.</p>
<h3>Fernando Alonso&#8217;s difficult decision</h3>
<p>Of course, the most obvious team for Alonso to go to is Renault &#8212; assuming this hasn&#8217;t been ruled out by Ron Dennis. He has reportedly already been offered a seat there, but seemingly Alonso has not (yet) accepted it.</p>
<p>One possibility for this is that Alonso does not see Renault as a competitive enough proposition. But what other options are there? BMW and Ferrari are both locked out. No-one else is as competitive, except (arguably) for Red Bull.</p>
<p>Another theory that I have heard is that there is &#8220;something up&#8221; between Alonso and Renault. Perhaps they had some kind of falling-out and they were just much more successful at keeping it a secret than McLaren were. Don&#8217;t forget that towards the end of the 2006 season Alonso was talking about how lonely he felt in the team. I had always thought of Alonso as a real Renault guy. But putting the pieces together, it seems to make sense that he perhaps fell out with the team.</p>
<p>The next most popular rumour is a move to Toyota. This has a lot going for it in one respect. There is a big Ralf Schumacher-sized vacancy and Toyota is probably the only team with the willingness and ability to pay the big bucks that Alonso no doubt demands.</p>
<p>Alonso is also good friends with Toyota driver Jarno Trulli. Also, if Alonso really has the ability to give six tenths to a team, who better to give it to than Toyota? This would allow them to mix with the front runners more regularly.</p>
<p>But I just don&#8217;t see it. Firstly, the rumours linking Alonso and Ross Brawn with a joint move to Toyota (or any team for that matter) seem too far fetched to me. Why would they join forces like that?</p>
<p>Also, the Toyota team is a disaster. I doubt even Alonso could make the team competitive &#8212; the bureaucracy is too overwhelming. Maybe he would want to do what Michael Schumacher did in 1996 and move to a mediocre team and &#8220;build&#8221; it into something much more successful. But it is one thing to resurrect a team as romantic as Ferrari. Toyota? It has no history, no passion, no <i>tifosi</i>&#8230; Just nothing going for it.</p>
<p>This all appears to pave the way to Red Bull. Firstly, they will have enough money to pay for Alonso. Secondly, they have the potential to become a front-running team. Geoff Willis and Adrian Newey are more than capable of building a seriously fast car. As long as they can get the reliability sorted, Red Bull ought to be a serious proposition. Also, it is not a manufacturer team, so if Alonso is forbidden to join one then Red Bull by default becomes obvious choice.</p>
<p>The only thing is that Red Bull already has two drivers for next season. However, it is not totally inconceivable that Red Bull could pay one of them off.</p>
<p>For me, the Red Bull rumour seems to stack up the most. It is not a manufacturer team, so it does not seem to be obvious at first. But there aren&#8217;t any major obstacles to the idea. But even if I was a gambler, I would not put any money on it. Everything is too uncertain.</p>
<p>Fernando Alonso seems to have a difficult choice ahead of him. But it looks easy in comparison to the awful choice McLaren has to take! Who shall they choose to replace Fernando Alonso?</p>
<h3>McLaren&#8217;s difficult decision</h3>
<p>McLaren have a really difficult juggling act to perform here. First of all, I imagine that McLaren would be wary of hiring anyone who is remotely as talented as Lewis Hamilton in an attempt to avoid the awful events of the past six months or so.</p>
<p>But they also want to hire somebody who has some experience. As awesome as Lewis Hamilton is, he does not have the same kind of experience that is required in terms of car set-up and whatnot. Teams tend to want to balance fresh talent with experience.</p>
<p>Also, they won&#8217;t want to hire another Brit. The media keeps on suggesting that Jenson Button is a possibility, but this is arrant nonsense. It doesn&#8217;t make commercial sense for them, because having drivers of two different nationalities encourages sponsors from both of those countries. McLaren is a British team with a British driver. It certainly doesn&#8217;t need another one. There is also the fact that Button just isn&#8217;t talented enough to driver for a team as good as McLaren.</p>
<p>All in all, it&#8217;s difficult to see who could be suitable for the McLaren drive. It is not just the three problems I have outlined above. The fact is that all of the feasible options are either inexperienced or past it.</p>
<p>So, who are the options? Up until today I would have said Nico Rosberg was a possibility. But today he was confirmed as a Williams driver for 2009.</p>
<p>Who else? Heikki Kovalainen appears to be the most obvious candidate. If Alonso moves to Renault, it would be a straight swap. Kovalainen has been quite competent at Renault this year.</p>
<p>I do remember once reading someone say that Kovalainen is an obvious choice for McLaren. Why? A Brit and a Finn &#8212; how could Ron Dennis resist?</p>
<p>It is potentially dangerous for Kovalainen though. His reputation has been built on the line that if he was in the McLaren and Hamilton was in the Renault, then everybody would be talking about Kovalainen and not Hamilton. That reputation could be lost if he turns out not to be so hot! However, I don&#8217;t imagine Kovalainen would turn down a drive at McLaren, especially with his future at Renault looking (inexplicably) so uncertain.</p>
<p>Lewis Hamilton himself has said he wants his team mate to be either Rosberg (now out of the question), Kovalainen or Adrian Sutil. Hamilton was team mates with Sutil in GP2 and seems to get along well with him. Hamilton has also been favourable about Sutil&#8217;s driving ability this season. Many people do think that Sutil is due a drive at a better team. But is he really McLaren material? I doubt it.</p>
<p>Patrick Head has cheekily suggested that it could be Michael Schumacher. This is obviously just Patrick Head being a little bit playful, so shouldn&#8217;t be considered too seriously. However, I wouldn&#8217;t rule out a Schumacher comeback in the future.</p>
<p>People say that Schumacher is a Ferrari guy through and through. I am not so sure about that. Ferrari post-2006 is a very different beast, and we&#8217;ve seen that partly with the whole Stepneygate issue. There is some nasty politics in that team, and a lot of senior figures seem very disgruntled.</p>
<p>I think that rather than being a Ferrari man, Michael Schumacher is a Ross Brawn / Rory Byrne / Jean Todt / etc man. As such, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s unthinkable that Schumacher could make a comeback in a non-Ferrari for a one-off season. Of course, Mercedes would probably love that!</p>
<p>Who are the other options? Ralf Schumacher is so bad that he has already been ruled out by McLaren, even though they won&#8217;t say another word on the driver issue at the moment. Giancarlo Fisichella is similarly falling out of favour, and is starting to look very past it.</p>
<p>Pedro de la Rosa is another possibility, and he seems to be advertising himself a bit. He clearly wants the drive. He is trusty, but also rusty. De la Rosa knows his stuff and is an excellent test driver for McLaren, but his occasional race performances haven&#8217;t set the world alight (except for Bahrain 2005 &#8212; wow!). There also may be a question mark in Ron Dennis&#8217;s mind due to de la Rosa&#8217;s apparently heavy involvement in the row concerning Ferrari documents this year.</p>
<p>Another test driver is Gary Paffett. He is held in high regard, but is effectively ruled out because he is British.</p>
<p>Perhaps not quite over the hill yet are Rubens Barrichello and David Coulthard. Honda have been saying some astonishing things about Barrichello since Brazil, and the sword of Damocles seemingly hangs over him. Coulthard, meanwhile, may well get the heave-ho should Alonso join Red Bull.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a bit of a shame really. There has been a bit of hype about Barrichello and Coulthard both surpassing Ricardo Patrese&#8217;s record as the most experienced F1 driver ever if they complete the 2009 season. All of a sudden, by the looks of things, it seems as though <em>neither</em> of them might make it!</p>
<p>But are they possibilities for the McLaren drive? David Coulthard has already driven for McLaren, and he&#8217;s not always spoken about them in glowing terms since he left. But it would make the transition smooth and everyone will know where they stand. Coulthard would surely also be an excellent mentor for Lewis Hamilton.</p>
<p>Similarly for Barrichello. He has not driven for McLaren in the past, but I don&#8217;t think he is quite that rusty yet.</p>
<p>All-in-all, McLaren really have a tough choice. They either choose somebody who is not experienced enough, or they hire someone who is on the last legs of their F1 career. I&#8217;m glad I&#8217;m not responsible for making that decision.</p>
