			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While it is by no means unheard of for pieces of bodywork to come off an F1 car from time to time, there has already been quite a lot of it this season. In fact, after one and a half race weekends, I can think of four big bodywork failures.</p>
<p>Firstly, there was <strong>Kamui Kobayashi&#8217;s</strong> engine cover detatching itself during practice in Australia. Sauber have since modified the bodywork.</p>
<p>During the Australian Grand Prix, <strong>Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s</strong> floor became loose.</p>
<p><strong>Nick Heidfeld</strong> also had a substantial amount of damage to his car&#8217;s bodywork, and it&#8217;s not clear how it happened. There is apparently no TV footage of it, and to my knowledge there has been no real explanation of what actually happened to cause the damage.</p>
<p>Then this morning the qualifying session for the Malaysian Grand Prix was halted after <strong>Sébastien Buemi&#8217;s</strong> left sidepod flew off his car and settled on the racing line.</p>
<p>There is every chance that this is all a coincidence, but I do find it intriguing that so much bodywork has fallen off the F1 cars this season already, and the second race hasn&#8217;t even started yet.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> I have been reminded by <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/F1Times/status/56759513998561280">The F1 Times on Twitter</a> that two onboard cameras have also fallen off this season already. Felipe Massa&#8217;s came off in Practice 3 in Australia, while Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s detatched in Practice 3 in Malaysia.</p>

<h3>6. Force India</h3>
<p>Force India have come along way in the past couple of years. From being perennial tail-enders, they are now solid midfield runners and can regularly expect to beat the likes of Williams, BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso. Vijay Mallya has succeeded where Alex Schnaider and Spyker failed.</p>
<p>A question mark remains over the driver lineup. I still find Adrian Sutil rather unimpressive. In his fourth season, surely we should be seeing more. And Vitantonio Liuzzi, while showing flashes of excellence, has generally failed to live up to expectations.</p>
<p>Force India also need to be careful that their progress up the grid does not come to a shuddering halt, with a mass exodus of their technical team having occurred this year. James Key has moved to assist in Sauber&#8217;s resurrection, while Mike Gascoyne has poached some of his ex-Force India colleagues to join him at Lotus. Looking at the five teams that are ahead of Force India in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, it is difficult to see how they can make much more progress.</p>
<h3>5. Mercedes</h3>
<p>It hasn&#8217;t quite gone to plan for Mercedes. Seemingly fed up with McLaren, the manufacturer opted to buy the Brawn team that was so stunningly successful last season. Then, in a <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">crass marketing stunt</a>, they signed Michael Schumacher with much fanfare. Well, it&#8217;s all been a bit of a damp squib.</p>
<p>The car has not met up to expectations, and I have heard rumours that Ross Brawn is not too happy with the way Mercedes run the show (who knows if there is truth in that though).</p>
<p>For my money, Mercedes must have the worst driver line-up with the possible exception of Sauber. Nico Rosberg is relatively well rated. But let us face it &#8212; we all know there is still a question mark as to how good he <em>really</em> is. Meanwhile, it was clear to me from the very start that Michael Schumacher would be rusty, and his performances has fully justified my view.</p>
<p>It would have been much better for both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher if a more sensible driver was chosen. Schumacher could have kept his dignity in retirement; Rosberg could have learnt from a genuinely solid and reliable barometer. Someone like Nick Heidfeld, perhaps. Or, you know, Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello&#8230;</p>
<h3>4. Ferrari</h3>
<p>It has similarly come apart for Ferrari. Although they showed promise at the start of the season, with a win in Bahrain (even if they didn&#8217;t quite have the outright pace). But since then the story has been one of a slow but steady decline as the season has progressed, as Ferrari have failed to keep up the pace of development, and as the Championship has increasingly focussed on Red Bull and McLaren whose cars are far superior.</p>
<p>The drivers have to take their fair share of the blame too. Fernando Alonso has been making many more mistakes than usual, and he is not as enjoyable to watch as he used to be. A worrying development for the person I consider to be the best driver of the past decade. Meanwhile, after a relatively bright start in Bahrain, Felipe Massa has seemed off-colour for most of the season.</p>
<h3>3. Renault</h3>
<p>They may be fifth in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, and, yes, they have the fifth fastest car. But I have elevated Renault in my rankings because it is an astonishing comeback.</p>
<p>It is incredible to think that just a month ago, the Renault F1 Team was mired in the quite unsavoury scandal that became known as &#8216;crashgate&#8217;. Having lost its sponsors and its star driver in addition to its team principal and technical director, you would expect 2010 to be a rebuilding year for Renault.</p>
<p>But the rebuild was swift. The team has rebranded to focus on its racing heritage, feeling less like the team that descended from Benetton. It has a steady new boss in the shape of Eric Boullier, who I think is doing a fantastic job. And its new star driver, Robert Kubica, looks set to become the team&#8217;s long-term centrepiece.</p>
<p>Kubica is doing really well just now and seems happy &#8212; by his standards at least! Vitaly Petrov is a fair bit off his pace, but he has not disgraced himself in my view. It should be remembered that Petrov is the only rookie among even the midfield teams, never mind front-running teams &#8212; so he should be given a bit of room to breathe and develop.</p>
<h3>2. Red Bull</h3>
<p>Red Bull should be number 1 on this list. This ought to be their year. They came out this season with easily the fastest car. Their car is still easily the fastest car. They have two of the best drivers on the grid.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the last little bit &#8212; professionalism, cohesion, restraint &#8212; that takes all these ingredients and turns an operation into a championship winning Formula 1 team is missing. If it isn&#8217;t some kind of reliability problem, it is a strategy goof, or the mother of all mismanagements.</p>
<p>Just now, Red Bull remind me of where McLaren were at a few years ago. Unable to control team mates. Bizarre strategy calls. Constantly walking into traps that they set up for themselves. Somehow conspiring to hoof it over the bar in the face of an open goal.</p>
<p>The statistics illustrate it well. Out of ten races, Red Bull have had nine pole positions, but have had just five wins. They lag behind McLaren in both championships. For a team that has what is probably comfortably the quickest car, Red Bull have managed to immensely stuff it up so far.</p>
<h3>1. McLaren</h3>
<p>McLaren have not been without their troubles this season. At the start of the season, it was clear that their car was not as quick as they would have liked. But the way they are dealing with it is the opposite to Red Bull, and that signals to me that they have learnt a lot from their difficult period in the mid-2000s.</p>
<p>As with Ferrari, they were scuppered by poor tactics during qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, severely compromising their race. Yet they still salvaged a fair points haul. Jenson Button did the same again at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. Even when it goes wrong, McLaren sort it and get it right. McLaren is now more agile and astute in its strategy calls than it was two or three years ago.</p>
<p>Martin Whitmarsh has done an outstanding job to plug the few gaps in McLaren&#8217;s abilities that Ron Dennis left behind. Now McLaren are a formidable force that should never be underestimated.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s pace of development alone makes them stand head and shoulders above the rest. The high-profile failure of their new blown diffuser at Silverstone is only really notable because it is so unusual for a new McLaren part to go wrong. Other teams have this sort of difficulty all the time. Witness the various botched attempts to adopt the F-duct, another part of the McLaren package that makes it the best of 2010 so far.</p>
<p>Then there are the drivers, who are both on song. Despite various figures constantly trying to goad them into a bloody deathmatch, they appear to get on like a house on fire.</p>
<p>Witness the difference between the McLaren team mates and their Red Bull counterparts at Turkey. McLaren&#8217;s drivers had a misunderstanding, but instead of blabbing to the media or making silly hand gestures, the drivers sorted it out with a quick chat after the race. Very professional. Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s and Jenson Button&#8217;s approach is a very healthy approach to racing all round.</p>
<p>That is what makes them championship winners, and today&#8217;s championship leaders. That is why McLaren are still the best team, even when they don&#8217;t necessarily have the best car.</p>

<p><em>To break this process in gently, I have decided to make the first post a light-hearted look at what might happen in the 2010 Formula 1 season.</em></p>

<h3>The season will be the most exciting ever, but the title of the DVD will make it sound like a wet Wednesday</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002RWJFBO?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=B002RWJFBO"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51c7p7AcVwL._SL500_AA168_.jpg" alt="Formula 1 Season Review 2009 cover" class="picture" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=B002RWJFBO" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />In 2006, Fernando Alonso took his second World Championship in scintillating style that went down to the wire. The title of the official Formula 1 season review DVD was &#8220;Once Again&#8221;, making it sound like your drunk uncle has just wet himself for the umpteenth time.</p>
<p>In 2007, after a tense season-long battle between McLaren team-mates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen amazed the world by snatching the title from both of them in the final race of the season, overcoming a 17 point deficit with two races to go. The DVD was called &#8220;Kimi made it at last&#8221;, as though he had just come home late from a heavy night.</p>
<p>In 2008 Lewis Hamilton took the Championship in heart attack-inducing style on the last corner of the last lap of the last race. The DVD was called &#8220;Luck does not come into it&#8221;, which I <em>still</em> haven&#8217;t worked out the meaning of.</p>
<p>And the DVD really sold the 2009 season well by calling it &#8220;Not in a hurry&#8230;&#8221;, as if Jenson Button did not have a record-breaking winning streak at the start of the season.</p>
<p>Even if the Championship showdown is host to the first ever alien visit to this planet and is settled with a massive 200mph laser gun fight involving seventeen drivers from the planet Q&#8217;txxp&#8217;he, it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if the DVD was given some madly dull title like, &#8220;I&#8217;d rather be watching paint dry&#8221;, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Corrie on the other side?&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;d stick with watching lawn bowls if I were you&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Confectionery diffuser face-off</h3>
<p>2009 was the year of the Double Decker diffusers. The 2010 pre-season testing period has seen a similar curiosity surrounding the rear end of F1 cars, with teams being notably coy about showing off their behinds.</p>
<p>The concept has now moved way beyond Double Decker diffusers. Among the new types of diffuser will be Red Bull&#8217;s Drifter diffuser, McLaren&#8217;s Mars Bar diffuser, Toro Rosso&#8217;s Curly Wurly diffuser and USF1&#8242;s Snickers diffuser. However, once again, Ross Brawn will find the upper hand when he reveals Mercedes&#8217;s Boost diffuser.</p>
<h3>FOM will fail to improve television coverage</h3>
<p>Although Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s FOM is supposedly covering the world&#8217;s most technologically advanced sport, the television pictures will still resemble a smudgy YouTube video. Bernie Ecclestone will insist that there is no need for HD coverage because, &#8220;my IT guy told me he swears by his old CRT television&#8221;.</p>

<p>Despite the decision to give HD the cold shoulder, FOM will stick with their existing on-screen graphics, which are so small that they are actually bloody impossible to read on any 4:3 display. They may be declaring the start of World War III on those captions for all I know.</p>
<h3>Intense McLaren Championship rivalry</h3>
<p>The title will come down to the wire in Abu Dhabi, with the main protagonists being McLaren team mates Hamilton and Button.</p>
<p>Towards the end of the race, John Button will think he has the upper hand by unleashing his killer move &#8211; undoing the last button on his shirt. Little will he anticipate that Anthony Hamilton will win the Championship by staring even more intensely.</p>
<h3>Michael Schumacher will be the world&#8217;s most superstitious man</h3>
<p>Following on from the revelation that Michael Schumacher has a mad <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns22036.html">superstition for odd numbers</a>, the German will reveal a litany of hitherto unknown superstitions. Among these will be an insistence that his team mate runs with an inferior set-up because &#8220;it makes me feel a bit better about my car&#8221;.</p>
<p>He will also reveal that he has a special form of OCD that means he just has to brake-test any drivers that are behind him, and cannot stop himself from driving straight into anyone who has just overtaken him. He also has a strong superstition for getting to choose his own parking space, and will park his Mercedes car in Race Control, where he can literally control the race by tampering with the timing system.</p>
<p>No-one will think to point any of this out, because nothing is allowed to get in the way of Princess Michelle&#8217;s Fairy Tale Comeback.</p>
<h3>Cosmopolitan Valencia will continue grid boy tradition</h3>
<p>Valencia&#8217;s tradition of having grid boys in addition to grid girls at the European Grand Prix will continue. Coincidentally, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/flav.jpg">Flavio Briatore will make his F1 comeback</a> at the very same race.</p>
<h3>New teams to struggle</h3>

<p>New teams will be unable to shake off speculation surrounding their ability to see out the season. While the early focus will be on USF1 and Campos, the spotlight will soon switch to Virgin Racing.</p>
<p>Suspicions will be raised mid-season when the Virgin team mysteriously re-brands with a green livery and makes a formal application to change its name to &#8216;Zavvi&#8217;. A few months later, the team will run out of money and close down, but not before a special fixtures and fittings sale where fans will have the opportunity to buy the screws that once held the car together.</p>
<h3>The bearded beggar who appears at races is not homeless</h3>
<p>Having made a tactical error by trying to get a drive at Mercedes only for some seven time World Champion or other to get in the way, Nick Heidfeld will begin the 2010 season without a job. He will resort to sleeping on the floor in the paddock and begging.</p>
<p>If you see a suspicious-looking bearded man in the paddock, it is probably Mr Heidfeld, the world&#8217;s greatest ever second place finisher. Although he might speak as though he is slightly drunk, he is not homeless and is perfectly harmless.</p>

<h3>24. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Sébastien Bourdais spent the 2008 season explaining that we should wait to judge him until the return of slicks in 2009. Slicks came in 2009. He has been duly judged.</p>
<h3>23. Romain Grosjean</h3>
<p>I feel a little bit sorry for Romain Grosjean. He was thrown into as difficult a situation as it is possible to imagine. Having done no testing whatsoever, he became Renault&#8217;s second driver just in time for a massive scandal involving Renault&#8217;s previous second driver to envelop the team. He didn&#8217;t perform very well, but they were exceptionally difficult circumstances in my view.</p>
<h3>22. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>I thought Nakajima did a good job in 2008, but 2009 was a huge disappointment. His main achievement of the season was to qualify an admittedly impressive 5th place for the British Grand Prix. However, his race was poor and he finished 11th. Way to hoof it over the bar.</p>
<h3>21. Jaime Alguersuari</h3>
<p>As with the other drivers who were expected to hit the ground running mid-season, Alguersuari was disadvantaged by the fact that he had done no testing. It may also be said that he was brought into F1 too quickly by the impatient Red Bull driver development juggernaut. While he was British F3 Champion of 2008, he was having a moderate season in World Series by Renault and may have befitted from some extra time to develop his skills away from the intense spotlight of F1. As a result, Alguersuari spent a lot of his time crashing or being rather unspectacular.</p>
<h3>20. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>I do wish Adrian Sutil could show us something &#8212; anything &#8212; that would once and for all conclude that he fully deserves a place in F1. He does show flashes of potential, but contrives to throw his chances away. He could have had a decent points finish in China if he had been more careful in the worsening weather conditions. And he has gained a reputation for being involved in a lot of needless crashes. His crash with Nick Heidfeld in Singapore following a needless spin was particularly unnecessary. This was made all the worse by the fact that he pulled off a frighteningly similar manoeuvre in Japan at the following race. His performance in Belgium looked poor in comparison with his team mate who battled for the win all race long. The main saving grace was a fourth place in Italy.</p>
<h3>19. Luca Badoer</h3>
<p>Yes, Luca Badoer was massively disappointing as the substitute for Felipe Massa at Ferrari. However, as I have written before, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">he had a harder job than anyone else</a> on the grid, being expected to become instantly competitive after 10 years away from racing. Given the circumstances, I think Luca Badoer performed quite admirably. It is not as though Fisichella could do much more in that Ferrari &#8212; and he didn&#8217;t have the excuse of being out of practice for a decade.</p>
<h3>18. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>I think Buemi did a decent job overall in 2009, although it&#8217;s difficult to remember any real stand-out moments. He should have another year in F1, but ought to show more in 2010 in order to justify his continued presence on the grid.</p>
<h3>17. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>2009 was another disappointing year for Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn was totally outclassed by his team mate all season long, and never looked like a driver who deserves to be driving for a team as good as McLaren. He seems competent enough, but clearly lacks the hunger and seems incapable of putting in a truly great performance.</p>
<h3>16. Vitantonio Liuzzi</h3>
<p>Liuzzi made his long-overdue return to the cockpit in a Force India this year. He did a great job at his first race back in Monza, but was slightly disappointing for the remainder of the season. 2010 will be a very important year for his career &#8212; it&#8217;s make or break time for Liuzzi.</p>
<h3>15. Kamui Kobayashi</h3>
<p>Kamui Kobayashi was notable for being the one rookie who grabbed your attention. He had only two races, but he made a huge impression on the F1 world. He was ballsy and aggressive, and provided some hugely entertaining racing, particularly against Jenson Button! The downside to this was that he overstepped the line once or twice, particularly when he caused a crash with Nakajima in Brazil. I also doubt whether the driver that races for Sauber in 2010 will show the same hunger. In these two races, Kobayashi had nothing to lose and so took the necessary risks. In 2010 it might all be very different.</p>
<h3>14. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>At the beginning of the season, Giancarlo Fisichella continued in the trajectory his career has generally taken &#8212; downwards. The season began ignominiously when he missed his pit box in Australia. There were even rumours that Force India were less than impressed, and were looking to replace him. Then came the rumours that Ferrari were looking to Fisichella as the replacement for the struggling Luca Badoer. Bang on cue, Fisichella put in one of the drives of his life. With his Force India car on song at Spa, he really should have won the race were it not for the kers of the Ferrari car he was about to step into. Once he&#8217;d secured his dream drive for Ferrari, it was back to business as usual as he lurched from disappointment to deeper disappointment.</p>
<h3>13. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>Robert Kubica was unable to shine this year in the difficult BMW car. Matters were not helped by his height, which was a major disadvantage when BMW tried to run with kers. He took a while to score his first points of the season, and was behind his team mate in the Drivers&#8217; Championship all year. The main consolation was a superb second place finish in Brazil. I hope that Renault can produce a good car for him next year &#8212; he deserves a better chance than this.</p>
<h3>12. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>It was a difficult year for Nick Heidfeld. The BMW car was a massive disappointment and it must have been quite a demoralising season for Nick Heidfeld. Nevertheless, he managed to grab a handful of points, including a second place in the curtailed Malaysian race. He also did a better job at scoring points than Robert Kubica. I deeply hope Heidfeld gets a drive for next season.</p>
<h3>11. Jarno Trulli</h3>
<p>For a long time, I have disliked Jarno Trulli. However, grudgingly, I have to admit that he did a fairly good job in 2009, despite the Toyota team&#8217;s best efforts to throw it all away. Two third place finishes near the start of the season reflected the performance of the car. But his second place in Japan was truly impressive.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The end of this season has not been a particularly healthy one for Formula 1. Two major names have left, and another has had an emergency meeting to consider if it should leave too.</p>
<p>First of all, the sole tyre supplier, Bridgestone, has announced that it will quit F1 at the end of 2011 when its current contract ends. This came as a shock. With the spotlight on car manufacturers, it doesn&#8217;t seem to have entered anyone&#8217;s mind that a company such as Bridgestone, which has been so incredibly loyal to the sport, would consider upping sticks.</p>
<p>I can remember a time when Bridgestone were not in F1, but only just. When I started watching Formula 1 in the mid-1990s, Goodyear was the sole tyre supplier. But Bridgestone entered in 1997, beginning the &#8220;tyre war&#8221;. When Goodyear left soon afterwards, it was not long until Michelin came in to begin an even fiercer tyre war.</p>
<p>I wasn&#8217;t a big fan of the tyre war. Mostly, one tyre was a major advantage over the other, so we were essentially left with two championships &#8212; a Bridgestone championship and a Michelin championship. Considering Bridgestone practically tailor-made their tyres to suit Ferrari, this essentially made Ferrari a shoo-in for the championship every year. That was until the 2005 regulations &#8212; which banned mid-race tyre changes &#8212; handed the advantage to Michelin in a big way.</p>
<p>2005 was the year when the tyre war well and truly jumped the shark. In the quest for the competitive edge, both companies had made their tyres softer and softer. The resurfaced banking at Indianapolis bit, Michelins exploded all over the shop and we were left with a farcical race in which only the six Bridgestone-shod cars competed.</p>
<p>On the back of the problems, the FIA decided that a sole company should supply the tyres for all the teams. The problem with this was that it had the potential to severely reduce the amount of exposure that tyre company got. With no tyre war to talk about, people might not talk about tyres. For this reason, Michelin refused to have any further part in F1.</p>
<p>The upshot was that Bridgestone and the FIA colluded to concoct the maddest new rules and gimmicks in order to contrive some interest in the tyres. One has to paint green lines all over the tyre in a crass attempt to pretend they care about the environment. Of course, the green on the tyres clashes with teams&#8217; liveries, making the scheme not only nonsensical, but also damn ugly.</p>
<p>Teams are also forced to use a sub-optimal tyre compound at some point during the race. While this may have superficially &#8220;spiced up&#8221; the action, it is artificial. Drivers are critical of it, and Fernando Alonso even said that he would rather race with wet tyres on a dry circuit.</p>
<p>Moreover, there is a sense that Bridgestone may have <em>deliberately</em> made their tyres behave strangely in an attempt to get drivers and teams discussing tyres with the media. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78957">Nick Heidfeld has said</a> that the tyres could be &#8220;ten times better&#8221;. <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/05/watch-out-robert-kubica-announcement/">Joe Saward expanded</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Bridgestones react differently on each car and finding the tricks that make them work is not easy. Some drivers can do it at some tracks and not at others. Even World Championship challenger Jenson Button has struggled with this&#8230;</p>
<p>Bridgestone seems to have concluded that it is better to have people talking about the tyres rather than not talking about them – even if a lot of the references are negative.</p></blockquote>
<p>I rejoiced when it was announced that a &#8220;control&#8221; tyre was to be brought in. But it has brought the wrong sort of control. I am not too sure that the current dark behaviour is an improvement over the honest competition of the tyre war.</p>
<p>If you have reached the stage where your marketing strategy is to have people make negative comments about your product, it probably is time to call it a day.</p>
<p>In many ways, Bridgestone get a huge amount of brand exposure through their involvement in F1. As noted in <a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/11/03/podcast-131-abu-dhabi-review/">this week&#8217;s Formula1Blog.com podcast</a>, you simply cannot watch a Grand Prix without learning that Bridgestone supply the tyres. Yet, after thirteen seasons (fifteen by the time they leave), the marginal returns to their investment must surely have diminished to almost zero. And <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/11/02/bridgestone-to-make-surprise-f1-exit/">As Keith at F1 Fanatic has pointed out</a>, their costs are set to soar as they now have to supply twelve or thirteen teams rather than ten.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it is a shock and a surprise that Bridgestone, a company that has stuck with F1 through thick and thin since 1997, has so abruptly pulled the plug. Now the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone will have a big headache trying to find someone to take Bridgestone&#8217;s place. With bridges burned with Goodyear and Michelin, and <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKL414181020091104">Pirelli uninterested</a>, options seem thin on the ground.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There is not a great deal to say about the racing at the Marina Bay Street Circuit this weekend. With the novelty of the night race concept having worn off, Singapore&#8217;s street circuit revealed itself to be on a par with Valencia&#8217;s in terms of on-track boredom.</p>
<p>That is not to say there aren&#8217;t a few talking points. Even though the race was quite insipid in many ways, there is little insipid about the podium. Lewis Hamilton put in a solid, though uneventful, performance to take a well-deserved second win of the season.</p>
<p>But I was most interested to watch the interview with his team mate, Heikki Kovalainen, after the race. Amid the latest rumours that Kimi Räikkönen is heading back to McLaren, Kovalainen is on the back foot. He needs to put in better performances in order to prove to McLaren and other teams that he deserves to be employed. But his demeanour after the race said it all &#8212; he sounded like a driver who realised he had been found out. 7th isn&#8217;t really good enough when the car is capable of winning.</p>
<p>Full credit must go to Timo Glock for finishing second. It is true that he largely inherited this position as a result of the woes of drivers in front: drive-through penalties for Rosberg and Vettel, and brake failure for Webber. But he was there to capitalise, having done well to qualify sixth when quite frankly to my eyes the car looked horrible on Friday. His team-mate Trulli, meanwhile, finished a lowly 12th.</p>
<p>Fernando Alonso obviously likes the circuit and scored the best result of the season at the same point where Renault&#8217;s fortunes turned last year. The Renault hasn&#8217;t looked capable of finishing on the podium all season. And Alonso has seemed strangely off-key to me this year. But he did it this time round, and caused a stir by dedicating his podium finish to Flavio Briatore. Some are interpreting it as a <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/09/27/alonso-confirms-ferrari-deal/">parting shot</a>; others the <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/09/seemed-like-nice-gesture-to-me.html">human reaction</a> of a man who has lost the boss who helped make him successful.</p>
<p>Whatever, it seems increasingly clear that his move to Ferrari for 2010 has been secured, with the rumour mill frantically suggesting that an announcement will come at Suzuka this coming weekend. Perhaps that is the reason why Alonso&#8217;s fire in the belly has returned to allow him to finish third.</p>
<p>Then we come to the title protagonists. Red Bull had another nightmare weekend which has pretty much hammered the last nail into the coffin for their championship hopes. All four Red Bull cars seemed to be suffering from brake issues, with such a failure making Webber&#8217;s race end in the barrier. Vettel could have had a much better result were it not for a drive-through for speeding in the pitlane, something which Vettel is adamant he has not done. In that context, fourth is a pretty impressive result for him.</p>
<p>As for Brawn, they salvaged something from what threatened to be a disaster. It seemed to be an up and down weekend for them. They seemed happy on Friday, but Button began complaining vociferously during Saturday Practice. Then both Brawns struggled in Qualifying, culminating in Barrichello&#8217;s session-ending crash. Ross Brawn declared qualifying to be <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78908">disastrous</a>.</p>
<p>As it was, they put in an okay performance during the race to finish 5th and 6th. Most importantly, Brawn have practically sealed up the Constructors&#8217; Championship.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Jenson Button has extended his Drivers&#8217; Championship lead for the first time since Turkey. He edged further ahead of Barrichello by just one point, but with just three races to go, it looks like a tall order if anyone is to overhaul Button&#8217;s 15 point lead.</p>
<p>Maybe that makes the Championship boring now, which is perhaps why my eyes glazed over during that period in the middle of the race when nothing seemed to be happening. It has been an interesting season, but not an exciting one. Fair enough &#8212; we have had plenty of exciting seasons over the past few years and were perhaps overdue a dodgy one.</p>
<p>I am very much looking forward to the next race at Suzuka though. F1 finally returns to this classic circuit after three years, and it will surely provide a better class of show than the gimmicky Marina Bay circuit.</p>
<p>Just a final word about Adrian Sutil. What a chump. Fair play to him for trying to overtake someone, but his was a foul-up of Coulthard-esque proportions. Indeed, the entire incident was reminiscent of Coulthard&#8217;s attempt to overtake at Valencia last year.</p>
<p>But from my perspective, Sutil&#8217;s attempted move on Alguersuari was never on in a month of Sundays, and his determination to keep the throttle floored while in a spin was a stupid move when there was oncoming traffic. You have to feel sorry for Nick Heidfeld, who had his amazing run of consecutive finishes brought to a cruel end by a driver who should know better. Sutil&#8217;s $20,000 fine seems hefty, but I don&#8217;t feel much sympathy.</p>

<h3>20. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Last year he asked us to wait to judge him, and see how he performs on slick tyres. They were supposed to suit them better. But there is no real perceptible improvement in his performance. In fact, he may even be worse than last season. Bottom of the pile for me.</p>
<h3>19. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>This is his third full season in Formula 1 and we still haven&#8217;t seen what the hype was about. Sutil has not really come close to repeating the few flashes of promise we have seen during his career. The one moment was during the Malaysian Grand Prix when he was running as high as 6th &#8212; before spinning off (admittedly in treacherous conditions). After three years, I think we should have seen a bit more by now.</p>
<h3>18. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>The disappointment of the season. He spent much of 2008 within touching distance of his fancied team-mate Nico Rosberg in the Drivers&#8217; Championship. You might have expected him to improve this year. Instead, we are seeing a more lacklustre Nakajima who has failed to score a point. Indeed, he is yet even to finish in the top 10 all year.</p>
<p>One of the real head-scratchers of Nakajima&#8217;s season include successfully completing 77 laps at Monaco, only to crash on the final one. A chink of light was in sight when he qualified 5th at Silverstone, only to drop like a stone through the field during the race, eventually finishing 11th (which is still his best of the season).</p>
<h3>17. Nelsinho Piquet</h3>
<p>Nelsinho Piquet&#8217;s season is unfolding in much the same way as last year did &#8212; a bit lacklustre in general, but with a couple of half-decent results here and there. This year&#8217;s Renault does appear to be a bit of a shed, but he has once again been comprehensively beaten by his team mate.</p>
<p>But given that Alonso is, in my view, the best driver since Schumacher, it&#8217;s an unfair comparison. Maybe it&#8217;s better to note that Piquet has indeed beaten Alonso once (albeit in Britain, where Alonso was chronically held up by an ailing Heidfeld). But Piquet has more to do if he wants to remain in F1 for a third year.</p>
<h3>16. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>We should be careful when judging Buemi just now. He is the only rookie in the field. And we have seen some stunning rookie performances in recent years &#8212; Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica. So in that sense, at the moment Buemi looks a bit more plain than he may turn out to be in the long run.</p>
<p>In fact, I would say that it is a good thing that Buemi&#8217;s season so far has consisted of anonymity rather than idiocy (although crashing into Piquet in Monaco can be filed under &#8216;idiocy&#8217;). Plus, he has collected a few points, though we should bear in mind that he inherited two of them in Australia thanks to the joined-up brain-fade of two drivers in front of him. One slightly worrying thing is that he seems to have become worse as the season has progressed, but that may be a blip.</p>
<h3>15. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>Kovalainen races this season in difficult circumstances. His car is among the worst on the grid, and to add insult to injury his team-mate is a well-hyped World Champion. Even taking this into account though, Kovalainen&#8217;s performances have, in general, failed to meet expectations.</p>
<p>He started the season off with a first-lap crash in Australia, then unaccountably spun off on lap one in Malaysia. At the other end of this half of the season, he has been involved in a silly scrap with Sébastien Bourdais in Britain, and an unforced spin into the barriers at Monaco. A relatively good performance in China hasn&#8217;t made up for the rest of his poor season.</p>
<h3>14. Timo Glock</h3>
<p>Glock is another driver whose season began well, but has rapidly faded away towards the mid-point of the season. Unquestionably, his Toyota car has lost any advantage it had at the start of the season. But his team mate Jarno Trulli continues to make the most of the situation, and Glock&#8217;s season has been oddly anonymous.</p>
<p>He can be relied on to collect a steady haul of points when the car is up to it, but signs of his talent are reticent in revealing themselves. A super performance in treacherous conditions in Malaysia is the only notable moment of his season that I can think of.</p>
<h3>13. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>Nick Heidfeld&#8217;s season has been greatly constrained by his poor equipment. On the plus side, he has scored more points than Kubica, mostly thanks to a haul gained at the shortened Malaysian Grand Prix. He finished 2nd there but if the race ran to full distance he certainly wouldn&#8217;t have been that high up. Indeed, he was lucky to even be there after what was, in truth, a flaky performance.</p>
<p>At least this year, unlike last year, he is beating Robert Kubica. But the design of the car does not disadvantage him as much as it does Kubica.</p>
<h3>12. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>How the mighty have fallen. From challenging for the Championship in 2008, today Robert Kubica languishes at the arse end of the table, having just scored his first points in Turkey. To add insult to injury, he has already used up six of his allocated eight engines. In fairness, most of it isn&#8217;t his fault. By all accounts, his BMW car is awful, and it&#8217;s not helped by the fact that it was designed around a kers that was always going to disadvantage a driver of his size.</p>
<p>My overriding memory of Kubica&#8217;s racing this season has been his fight with Vettel at the front in Australia. That was back when the future still seemed bright. Mario Theissen said he would have won if he didn&#8217;t get tangled up with Sebastian Vettel. There was good and bad in that performance from Kubica, which maybe says it all about his season.</p>
<h3>11. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>I am not the greatest fan of Giancarlo Fisichella. Indeed, if I was in charge at Force India, I wouldn&#8217;t have given him a race seat. He started the year badly too, after embarrassingly missing his pit box in Australia, an incident that is said to have tried the patience of his team to the limit.</p>
<p>Aside from incidents like this though, you sense that Fisichella is squeezing the maximum out of the Force India car this year. Given that this is a team on the up, that could mean he will be scoring points soon. He has come close twice already this season (unlike Sutil), with commendable performances in both Monaco and Britain.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s difficult to know what to think of this season. Although there is a novelty in the fact that the big teams are all floundering, the racing hasn&#8217;t exactly been top-notch all season &#8212; certainly not at the front. Even with Button neutered, it just left the door open for someone else to put in a dominant performance at the front.</p>
<p>Incidentally, my brother made a good point that I hadn&#8217;t thought about before. There isn&#8217;t really anything novel about the people at the front at all. He noted that since the early 1990s, the vast majority of championships have been won by two men: Adrian Newey and Ross Brawn. From 1992 until 2004, these two men hoovered up every title going. Look whose cars are battling for the Championship this year.</p>
<p>It is still nice to see a couple of small(-ish) teams showing the big names how it&#8217;s done, but it doesn&#8217;t make the racing any better. The British Grand Prix continued the trend. There was not much overtaking, and we saw a noticeably sluggish Nick Heidfeld, lapping at around 1.5s slower than those in front of him, have very little trouble keeping the pacier Alonso behind, and an orderly queue duly formed.</p>
<p>From lap 2 onwards, everyone&#8217;s first stint was interminably dull. It doesn&#8217;t say much for the new aero regulations. It&#8217;s tempting to blame the FIA, but you may as well blame the Overtaking Working Group, mostly made up of people who today represent Fota.</p>
<p>I sensed everyone becoming bemused at just how little overtaking there was. At one point during the BBC&#8217;s coverage the FOM World Feed cut to an onboard of Lewis Hamilton when he should have been lining someone up when Martin Brundle suddenly blurted: &#8220;He&#8217;s on the rev limit!&#8221; like a lightbulb went off in his head. <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/06/23/video-rev-limiters-preventing-overtaking/">The FIA&#8217;s engine regulations prevent overtaking</a>.</p>
<p>In fairness, Silverstone doesn&#8217;t particularly lend itself to overtaking anyway, being mostly made up of high-speed corners. It is more the sort of place where drivers will get caught out by the difficult high-speed sections and the sharper drivers can take advantage in these moments.</p>
<p>So we saw a half-decent battle between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton as first the Spaniard made a mistake at Woodcote. Then Hamilton got caught out at Becketts to allow Alonso to re-take the position. But Alonso was totally powerless in the first stint to do anything about the slow but steady Heidfeld. We had to rely on drivers making unforced errors for any position changes to be made.</p>
<p>Apart from the lack of overtaking, what are the major talking points of the race?</p>
<p>Perhaps the most surprising thing about the weekend was the fact that Button never got to grips with the situation. I always suspected that Barrichello would have the upper hand at Silverstone. It is effectively his second &#8220;home&#8221; race, he knows the place like the back of his hand and he has always gone well there. But I wasn&#8217;t prepared for the scale of Button&#8217;s struggles.</p>
<p>We have seen time and again this season Button struggle through Friday Practice and only get to grips with his car on Saturday, sometimes just in time to set his final flying lap. This weekend it was as if it never happened. The Brawn doesn&#8217;t like cold temperatures, and the British Grand Prix will be among the coolest of the season. There were also no heavy braking areas, which is apparently the Brawn&#8217;s strong point. Meanwhile, the high-speed corners played to Red Bull&#8217;s advantage.</p>
<p>But look at who Button was beaten by. Ahead of him on the grid were Jarno Trulli and, of all people, Kazuki Nakajima. Ahead of him in the race were Massa and Rosberg &#8212; and even that was mainly due to a Brawn strategy. It is true that Button was heavily disadvantaged at the start by Trulli&#8217;s sluggish getaway, but it was Button who qualified behind Trulli in the first place.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel, who must be the favourite to challenge Button for the title, put in a flawless performance. In stark contrast to Turkey, where Button was majestic and Vettel floundered, the young German star didn&#8217;t put a foot wrong all race. He pulled out a lead of over a second per lap in the first stint, which you don&#8217;t see too often these days. As the cars passed the chequered flag, Vettel&#8217;s advantage over Button was 46 seconds.</p>
<p>Nakajima had a career-best 5th position on the grid, but was unable to take advantage. In fact, he mysteriously dropped down the order after his first pit stop, and afterwards <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/76435">Nakajima was at a loss</a>, saying, There weren&#8217;t any particular reasons for it. The good qualifying performance is encouraging, but it means nothing if the driver can&#8217;t make the most of it during the race.</p>
<p>Nakajima even ended up behind Giancarlo Fisichella&#8217;s Force India. But in fairness, it was a stellar effort from Fisi, helped largely by an awesome start which saw him gain five places in the first lap. He is, at last, beginning to turn in some head-turning performances in that car, and they surely deserve to score a point with him soon. 10th place is excellent, especially considering there were only two retirements, and they were both behind him anyway.</p>
<p>Then there is the collision between Heikki Kovalainen and Sébastien Bourdais. I think you have to blame Kovalainen for that one. He didn&#8217;t seem to know what he was doing, and was weaving about like a drunk driver. Bourdais did very little to aggravate the situation and I don&#8217;t know what else he could have been expected to do.</p>
<p>So for the first time in a while we have seen Brawn on the back foot, and Red Bull have been given wings. We sit effectively at the half-way point of the season, and you wonder if this sets the scene for the rest of the season. But with a three week break until the next race in Germany there is a lot of time for the teams to improve their cars and for everyone to reflect on the situation.</p>
<p>There is a bit of politics to get out of the way first though, and I fear that the intervening three weeks will be dominated by non-racing matters.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s sad to say, but it&#8217;s true. The Spanish Grand Prix is now one of the most important events on the calendar since the emergence of Fernando Alonso. But the circuit that hosts it simply does not produce a good F1 race. I can&#8217;t remember the last time there was an exciting Spanish Grand Prix, and 2009 won&#8217;t exactly stick in the memory for long either. But while the on-track action left something to be desired, there were still a few interesting aspects of the grand prix, and there are a few talking points to be considered.</p>
<p>First of all there is the controversy surrounding the strategy of the two Brawn cars. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/75241">According to Ross Brawn</a>, Rubens Barrichello&#8217;s three-stop strategy was the optimal one. But the driver just couldn&#8217;t put in the laps. It&#8217;s strange because one of the things that leapt out at me while watching the live timing during the race was the fact that at one point he was lapping around a second faster than anyone else on the circuit.</p>
<p>Jenson Button was always going to be favourite for the win since he grabbed pole position in spectacular fashion on Saturday. But that all changed when Barrichello had an amazing start, and passed his team mate on the outside going into turn 1. Barrichello&#8217;s race unravelled during his third stint though, and it became clear that the strategy just wasn&#8217;t working for him. I wonder why it was expected to. No-one else opted for a three-stop strategy apart from Kazuki Nakajima way back in 13th place.</p>
<p>There is an <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/05/10/did-brawn-deliberately-give-barrichello-a-poor-strategy-to-let-button-win/">excellent analysis</a> of the Brawns&#8217; strategy over at F1 Fanatic.</p>
<p>Putting that aside, you have to applaud Jenson Button for putting in the good lap times when it counted. Brawn were dominant in this race, and this circuit was always expected to suit their car. I sense that Brawn&#8217;s advantage will not be so large in Monaco, where I feel Red Bull will have the edge. It is certainly a circuit that Red Bull have tended to do well at in the past.</p>
<p>As for this race, the Red Bull team must have mixed emotions. Mark Webber pulled off the surprise of the race by managing to climb to third largely through pitstop strategy. In the end he was very close to Barrichello at the finish line, so he did a great job.</p>
<p>Sebastian Vettel was more disappointing. For the second race in a row, Vettel&#8217;s race has been ruined by being stuck behind a slower car. In Bahrain it was Hamilton, but just for the first stint. His luck worsened further in Spain when he was stuck behind Massa. It transpired that both drivers had identical strategies, so Vettel had no chance to &#8220;overtake him in the pitlane&#8221;.</p>
<p>Does the fact that this has happened two races in a row raise a question mark over Vettel&#8217;s abilities? I certainly find it disappointing that Vettel has been unable to overtake these drivers for two races in a row. It is true that both of these cars were kers-equipped, making it particularly difficult to overtake. But Button managed it in Bahrain. Perhaps Vettel needs to work on this aspect of his racing, and certainly he could do with starting a bit better because in both cases he qualified ahead only to get &#8220;kersed&#8221; (as Anthony Davidson put it during this weekend&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/cff1/">Chequered Flag podcast</a>) at the start.</p>
<p>It must have been all the more bitter for Sebastian Vettel when it ended up that he was being held up for nothing. Felipe Massa&#8217;s fuel rig was seemingly faulty, and he didn&#8217;t get enough fuel in his car. The Brazilian had nothing to do but lift off and wait to be overtaken first be Vettel and then by Alonso.</p>
<p>At least Massa was running well in 3rd or 4th for the majority of the race. Räikkönen, hindered by his poor decision to stay in the garage at the end of Q1, never made much progress through the midfield and eventually had to retire with a hydraulics problem. Yet more reliability woes for the Scuderia. I find it difficult to imagine how Ferrari&#8217;s season can get worse in any more ways.</p>
<p>Congratulations to Fernando Alonso for driving a good home race and finishing 5th. His fans will be hoping that this is a sign of more to come from the Renault package, and I have no doubt that the team will be able to develop that car well, just as they did last season.</p>
<p>Toyota, who came close to winning in Bahrain, seemed well off the pace in Spain. Jarno Trulli wasn&#8217;t helped by his awful start, which left him in the midfield cluster which resulted in him going onto the grass and starting a collision that ended the race of four cars. Timo Glock also got bogged down at the start and never looked close to being that high up the order again.</p>
<p>BMW have improved a little, but not enough. Their car now looks radically different to the one that finished last in Bahrain. Two points for Nick Heidfeld is undoubtedly an improvement. But increasingly BMW&#8217;s decision to divert their focus from 2008 seems like the wrong one. Robert Kubica remains pointless.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a similar story for Williams. Although we have become accustomed to seeing them stuck in the lower midfield over the past few years, they appeared to promise a lot during pre-season testing. Nico Rosberg must be disappointed to only be scoring a point in what was actually a pretty good race for him.</p>
<p>McLaren were expected to do badly here, and so it proved to be. Lewis Hamilton finished in 9th. That is not good. For the first few races, Hamilton impressed me with his ability to squeeze good results out of what is undoubtedly a poor car, including a fabulous fourth in Bahrain. He was unable to do that in Spain, and seemed pretty tetchy in the post-race interviews. Heikki Kovalainen retired with gearbox issues. Another one to add to McLaren&#8217;s reliability problems, but at least their list is not as long as Ferrari&#8217;s.</p>
<p>So another race passes, and Brawn look more dominant than they have done since Australia. But as I say, I have a feeling that Monaco will be a rather different matter, and I look forward to seeing how the teams perform there.</p>

<p>Here is a quick look at some of the stand-out talking points as I see them.</p>
<p>First of all, the &#8220;Brawn supremacy&#8221; is not quite as extreme as it seemed in Melbourne. Most observers posited that Brawn had extra pace in the bag in Australia. That may have been the case, but it seemed to almost evaporate in Malaysia.</p>
<p>The Achilles&#8217; heel of the car appears to be its starts. After Rubens Barrichello&#8217;s anti-stall kicked in at the start in Australia, Jenson Button suffered from a sluggish getaway in Sepang. We have also seen a number of slow getaways from pitstops. Presumably this is a consequence of the late change of engine supplier. It could be important for Brawn because until the first set of pitstops Jenson Button had to make do with 3rd place when he seemed to have a car capable of winning.</p>
<p>In such a situation it helps for the boss of your team to be a renowned master tactician. After the race, Barrichello bemoaned &#8220;strange tyre choices&#8221; that thwarted his race. But Button banging in a couple of scintillating laps in clean air just before his pitstop to allow him to leapfrog to the front was pure Brawn. It was very reminiscent of the Schumacher days.</p>
<p>Schumacher himself wasn&#8217;t performing so well on the Ferrari pit wall. Rumour has it that he was the person who made the decision to put Kimi Räikkönen on wet tyres while the circuit was still bone dry. By the time the rain came, the furious Finn was on the radio: &#8220;my tyres are completely destroyed!!&#8221;</p>
<p>To rub salt in the wounds, it seems as though the Ferrari car is generally underperforming. They don&#8217;t seem to be in as bad a position as McLaren, but they are not much better. Now the teams to watch are Brawn, Toyota, Red Bull and maybe Williams. Ferrari need to improve and quick.</p>
<p>It would take a heart of stone not to be amused by the fact that Ferrari are currently bottom of the Constructors&#8217; Championship, behind even Force India. Given that McLaren are supposed to be the team in the doldrums, it&#8217;s amazing that Ferrari have fouled up the start of this season so badly.</p>
<p>If McLaren hadn&#8217;t gone into self-destruct mode, they would have 6 (or 7) points and be lying 3rd in the Constructors&#8217; Championship! Putting aside the unsavoury events in the stewards&#8217; office, you have to pay tribute to Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s ability to get on with the job. By all accounts, the McLaren car is a shithouse, but the World Champion is doing a creditable job with it, especially when you consider the storm that currently surrounds him.</p>
<p>Hamilton had a spirited battle with Mark Webber. The Australian&#8217;s Red Bull was clearly superior in the wet (and it was such a joy to watch too!), but Hamilton was able to use kers to great effect, providing a good spectacle for the viewers for a lap or two. That is one good side of the introduction of kers, but the effect would be neutralised if all the cars were to run it.</p>
<p>Toyota are looking like major contenders now. I have to say I am beginning to feel like a massive pillock for writing them off back in January. Glock was another driver who benefited from an excellent strategy in Sepang, and it has to be said he did a great job ploughing through the field, maximising his advantage as one of the only drivers on intermediate tyres. I haven&#8217;t taken much notice of Glock before, but maybe it&#8217;s time to start paying attention.</p>
<p>Nick Heidfeld also had a good strategy, pitting just once. He spent more time on the racetrack, meaning that he finished the race in 2nd place. He didn&#8217;t actually have all that good a race though. He fell off the island while under pressure from Sebastian Vettel and allowed Hamilton through in the process too. After that he was in 11th place. In a way, though, that makes his progression all the way back up to 2nd all the more commendable.</p>
<p>More ominously, for a BMW supporter like me, Robert Kubica had to retire after just one lap with engine trouble. BMW may be 3rd in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, but it is quite a distant 3rd. The first two races have not brought much cheer for BMW. Fingers crossed it is just a blip and the team will get it together.</p>
<p>Williams were promising, and it was notable that Nico Rosberg led the race for a considerable portion &#8212; on merit. It looks as though, if ever Williams have a chance to become front-runners again, it is this year. I sense that their drivers don&#8217;t have the talent to feel the heat at the sharp end of the field though. Looking at the lap chart, it is clear that Rosberg suffered more than most when the rain came down.</p>
<p>All-in-all, despite the curtailment of the race, I think the Malaysian Grand Prix was an absolute cracker. Brawn&#8217;s advantage appears to be slipping away, and the teams snapping at their heels are not the usual suspects. This is what we endure years of Ferrari dominance for. <img src='http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
