			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I feel sad. The Monaco Grand Prix was a great race &#8212; easily the best of the season so far. At a track notorious for processions, Monaco was producing a corker.</p>
<p>Pirelli&#8217;s tyres held up for a change, meaning genuinely good racing through strategy, not cartoon-style degredation. The DRS is little use round here too, meaning it had little effect.</p>
<h3>A beautiful move on Schumacher</h3>
<p>DRS did play a role. But even so, passing into Sainte Dévote requires a massive pair, whether you have DRS or not. And that is just what Lewis Hamilton did. He pulled off a stunning move on Michael Schumacher that brilliantly caught the veteran off guard.</p>
<p>It was brave, but it was also perfectly judged. Both gave each other racing room. It was just the sort of passing that we want to see in F1.</p>
<h3>Hamilton loses the plot against Massa and Maldonado</h3>
<p>But sadly it went pear-shaped from there. It seems as though, after completing the move of the season, he seemed to believe he was invincible.</p>
<p>An over-ambitious move on Felipe Massa at the Lowes hairpin was a poor misjudgement. His drive-through penalty echoed that handed out to Paul di Resta who made a similar error.</p>
<p>Having damaged the Ferrari, Hamilton then opted to overtake Massa in the tunnel. It is not news that there is only one line through the dangerous and high-speed tunnel. Hamilton&#8217;s move forced the Brazilian onto the marbles and ultimately the barrier.</p>
<p>Then after the re-start, he attempted to repeat the move he made near the start on Schumacher. This time his target was Pastor Maldonado, but unfortunately this time target was meant in the literal sense. Hamilton barged straight into Maldonado, in the sort of move that only really belongs in a touring car race, if it even belongs there.</p>
<h3>Post-race petulance</h3>
<p>Hamilton&#8217;s excuse? It can be paraphrased: &#8220;Well, at least I was trying to race.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not buying that. There was plenty of excellent overtaking going on during the Monaco Grand Prix that didn&#8217;t involve punting others off. There were lots of examples of aggressive, but clean racing.</p>
<p>Hamilton managed it himself early on against Schumacher. But there was Schumacher&#8217;s move on Rosberg. Barrichello&#8217;s on Schumacher. Massa and Maldonado against Rosberg. Clean racing is possible, even at Monaco &#8212; no contact required. <p>But Hamilton couldn&#8217;t hold his hands up and admit that he had a bad race. He instead chose to question why he had been called to see the stewards at five out of the six races this season so far.</p>

<p>Here is a clue. Don&#8217;t cause three crashes in one race. Then you might not get hauled in front of the stewards. As it is, Hamilton is lucky not to have got the black flag for driving dangerously and ending the race of two other drivers.</p>
<p>Instead, Hamilton chose to &#8220;joke&#8221; that &#8220;maybe it&#8217;s because I&#8217;m black&#8221;.</p>
<h3>A reminder of why Hamilton is so divisive</h3>
<p>It&#8217;s too easy to blame the stewards. Worryingly, Hamilton seems to genuinely believe that he should be untouchable &#8212; that he can get away with whatever he wants.</p>
<p>Paul di Resta caused an accident, got penalised, and held his hands up after the race. He admitted that he made a rookie error, that he needs to learn from it and improve for next time.</p>

<p>For Lewis Hamilton? As Martin Brundle said in the BBC&#8217;s post-race F1 forum, the problem with Hamilton is that it&#8217;s always someone else&#8217;s fault. He has never been able to accept his mistakes, and he is always the first one to get straight on the radio and whine about non-existant instances of bad driving he has seen from other drivers.</p>

<p>All-in-all, this weekend has been a reminder of what made Lewis Hamilton such a divisive figure when he burst onto the scene in 2007. Back then his cockiness grated, but he was young and arrogant. In that sense, maybe it could be understood.</p>
<p>In more recent years, he seemed to have mellowed. He deserved to win his championship in 2008. Ever since he has done a good job at McLaren, and has managed to keep the lid on his post-race outbursts, even if he is quick to get on the radio to whine during the race.</p>
<p>But Monaco brought it all back to square one.</p>
<p>And it was such a fine start to the race as well. If he&#8217;d just left it there, his original, clean move on Schumacher would probably have ended up being my pass of the season. As it is, I have been left angered by the cockiness of a driver that really ought to know better by now.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most worrying trends in F1 is the increasing tendency of wheels and tyres to come loose and fly off. Since refuelling was banned for the start of the 2010 season, the speed of tyre changes has become easily the most crucial element of a pitstop. With the greater number of pitstops this year as a result of the current deliberately dodgy tyres, this has become even more critical.</p>
<p>During the Chinese Grand Prix we saw Jaime Alguersuari&#8217;s right rear wheel roll itself off the car soon after a pitstop. It flew off towards marshals, photographers and other bystanders, while Vitantonio Liuzzi took to the inside to avoiding being hit while he passed the stricken Toro Rosso.</p>
<p>Top F1 journalist <a href="http://adamcooperf1.com/">Adam Cooper</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/adamcooperf1/status/59610414425710593">reported on Twitter</a> that the wheel came dangerously to hitting him:</p>

<p>For me, loose wheels are easily the most dangerous thing in F1 today. When two marshals died in he space of a few races just over a decade ago, they were both as a result of flying wheels. Stronger wheel tethers were introduced after those incidents, but these do no good if the wheel is not properly attached to the car in the first place.</p>
<p>With the emphasis on tyre changes now at the very forefront of every race, it is no surprise that teams have been looking to save time in this area. Mercedes have been particularly inventive, developing a <a href="http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/those-mercedes-wheel-rims-an-update/">wheel nut</a> that is <a href="http://willthef1journo.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/mercedes-to-use-nascar-pitstop-tech/">attached to the wheel itself</a>.</p>
<p>But there have been lot of wheels coming off since the start of 2010, clearly as a result of not having been attached properly in the first place. Robert Kubica&#8217;s wheel detached after a few laps of the Japanese Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Mercedes also had a few wheel failures last year. Among these was the truly scary moment in Hungary when Nico Rosberg&#8217;s wheel came off the pitlane, causing all sorts of havoc as it bounced and rolled around while several dozen mechanics were busy working.</p>
<p>It is high time this was nipped in the bud. I am sure the teams would take more care in their pitstops if a real penalty was applied. This isn&#8217;t a sporting issue. It is a safety issue, and any teams that are not attaching wheels securely enough should face a ban.</p>
<p>Flying wheels are not just putting drivers at risk. They are putting marshalls and mechanics at risk. But worst of all they are putting spectators at risk.</p>
<p>Renault were suspended in 2009 after Fernando Alonso&#8217;s wheel came off in Hungary that year. However, the suspension was lifted. That was fine. Then, it was a one-off incident &#8212; in the refueling era there is little to suggest that Renault were cutting corners.</p>
<p>But today, the loose wheel problem is truly endemic. It must be stopped.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let me start off by pointing out that I would really like to see Paul di Resta do well in F1. It is always good to see fresh blood and I am a big fan of his cousin, Dario Franchitti.</p>
<p>But I have found Paul di Resta&#8217;s route into F1 curious. Why does Paul di Resta deserve to have a race seat when, for instance, Daniel Ricciardo doesn&#8217;t? Why, indeed, should he get the nod for a Force India race drive over the team&#8217;s reserve driver, Nico Hülkenberg who secured a pole position last year?</p>
<h3>Unconventional background</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta is coming into F1 having been in DTM for the past four years. There is no doubt he is a great racer &#8212; fools don&#8217;t win the DTM championship. But DTM is not known for ushering stars of the future into F1.</p>
<p>It is more well-known as a home for former F1 racers whose career is on the wane (Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard), former stars of the future who never quite made it into F1 (Gary Paffett) and drivers that specialise in racing touring cars.</p>
<p>One driver who has made the step from DTM to F1 is Christijan Albers. His F1 career lasted for two and a half years, largely without success. He was dropped by Spyker midway through 2007 after escaping from the pitlane with his fuel hose still attached proved to be a gaffe too far.</p>
<h3>Euro Series success</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta first attracted the attention of F1 bosses as a result of the success of another driver. Back in 2006, Paul di Resta competed for the Formula 3 Euroseries championship against Sebastian Vettel. Di Resta won.</p>
<p>But it was Vettel who managed to make the step up to Formula 1 the following season. Having already impressed as BMW&#8217;s third driver, and he stepped in for one race to deputise for Robert Kubica following the Pole&#8217;s huge crash in Canada. Later that year, he got a race drive for Toro Rosso, and it wasn&#8217;t long before he was being hailed as an &#8220;inevitable future world champion&#8221;.</p>
<p>As big wigs looked to Vettel&#8217;s route to F1, it was noticed by Mercedes bosses that he was beaten in F3 Euro Series by Paul di Resta. Mercedes resolved to line him up for a race seat, initially at McLaren. In the meantime, di Resta raced for Mercedes in DTM.</p>
<p>Attention switched to getting him a race seat at Force India in 2009. But progress was slow again as they opted to retain their existing lineup of Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella. Meanwhile, since buying the Brawn team, Mercedes focus has switched to having a German-only driver line-up.</p>
<p>In the run-up to 2010 the Paul di Resta hype was curiously quiet as Force India secured the services of Vitantonio Liuzzi instead. But as the season got going, it became increasingly clear that Force India wanted him to race in 2011.</p>
<p>But on what basis?</p>
<h3>Protracted junior career</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta&#8217;s protracted junior career may have set back his F1 career overall. Any comparisons with Sebastian Vettel based on F3 performances from five years ago are now irrelevant. Vettel now has a wealth of F1 experience that di Resta lacks.</p>
<p>At 24, Paul di Resta is relatively old for an F1 rookie these days. All of F1&#8242;s most successful drivers in recent years started their careers much earlier. Of the recent world champions, Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s first race was as a 19-year-old, as was Fernando Alonso&#8217;s. Jenson Button was 20, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher were 22. Kimi Räikkönen was 21, having made the leap directly from Formula Renault UK!</p>
<p>Paul di Resta is by no means too old to become an F1 rookie. But having a long &#8212; or indeed a successful &#8212; career in junior categories has not been shown to help create a great F1 driver.</p>
<p>All of the champions of the last decade progressed rapidly through the junior ranks. Vettel and Button made the leap straight from Formula 3. Hamilton efficiently strode up the ladder virtually one season at a time. Alonso had one season the Euro Open by Nissan (which today is World Series by Renault), and one season of Formula 3000 to his name.</p>
<p>Perhaps encouragingly for di Resta, Michael Schumacher for one raced more than just single-seaters before entering F1. Schumacher joined F1 after competing in the World Sportscar Championship. But he did not hang around there for four seasons, as di Resta has done in the DTM.</p>
<h3>Time will tell</h3>
<p>It remains to be seen whether or not Paul di Resta&#8217;s relatively unconventional route into F1 will pay off. There is, of course, no right or wrong way to go about a racing career. But I don&#8217;t see a great deal of evidence to suggest that di Resta will succeed in F1. I hope I&#8217;m wrong.</p>

<p>This is a post that I should have written at the end of last season, but didn&#8217;t get round to before deciding to go on hiatus. Many of these points will have been made before, and it may be a bit past its sell-by date &#8212; but here it is anyway.</p>

<p>I am in awe of what Red Bull Racing achieved last season. In one sense, it should all be so easy. They have the best designer in Adrian Newey. And they have one of the best drivers in Sebastian Vettel &#8212; and Mark Webber is pretty handy too.</p>
<p>But those elements were in place in previous years too. Plus, it is easy to forget that Adrian Newey has not been involved in a championship victory since 1999.</p>
<p>Vettel, too, was by no means a shoo-in for the championship. It took a fairly bizarre set of circumstances for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to go his way. And it was a tall order for him to become the youngest ever world champion.</p>
<p>The truth is that the achievements of Red Bull Racing and Sebastian Vettel are massive. Red Bull is a soft drink company. Yet they have shown world-class car manufacturers and experienced grand prix teams how to do it.</p>
<p>When I grew up watching Formula 1 in the 1990s, the talk was of F1&#8242;s &#8220;big four&#8221;. These were the dominant teams: Benetton, Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. Between 1979 and 2008, no-one outside of the big four won the Constructors&#8217; Championship (if you account for the fact that Benetton became Renault).</p>
<p>In the past two years, there has been a breakthrough. The stranglehold was broken, first by the Brawn team in its first &#8212; and only &#8212; year in F1; an unprecedented achievement. But, impressive though its achievements were, the Brawn team could trace its history in F1 back to Tyrrell&#8217;s first grand prix in 1968.</p>
<p>In a way, therefore, Red Bull&#8217;s achievements are even more extraordinary. Although Red Bull (much like the Brackley-based Tyrrell-BAR-Honda-Brawn-Mercedes squad), bought an existing team, this team in much younger. Originally set up as Stewart Grand Prix in 1997, it took 14 years for this team to win a Championship having been set up from scratch.</p>
<p>Red Bull truly is part of a new generation of championship winners. The next-youngest championship-winning team is Benetton / Renault, originally set up as Toleman in 1981.</p>
<p>A hat must go off to Paul and Jackie Stewart for their roles in this. I have heard it mentioned in passing once or twice, but I am surprised that more has not been made of it.</p>
<p>The Stewarts expended great efforts to set up their grand prix team, and against all the odds they achieved great things in the short three year lifespan of the team. Despite the best efforts of Ford to run the team into the ground with its misguided Jaguar Racing venture, the team has since gone on to achieve even greater things as Red Bull.</p>
<p>So hats off to Paul and Jackie Stewart. And hats off to Dietrich Mateschitz, Adrian Newey, Christian Horner, Sebastian Vettel and everyone else inolved in Red Bull Racing&#8217;s amazing achievement.</p>

<h3>6. Force India</h3>
<p>Force India have come along way in the past couple of years. From being perennial tail-enders, they are now solid midfield runners and can regularly expect to beat the likes of Williams, BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso. Vijay Mallya has succeeded where Alex Schnaider and Spyker failed.</p>
<p>A question mark remains over the driver lineup. I still find Adrian Sutil rather unimpressive. In his fourth season, surely we should be seeing more. And Vitantonio Liuzzi, while showing flashes of excellence, has generally failed to live up to expectations.</p>
<p>Force India also need to be careful that their progress up the grid does not come to a shuddering halt, with a mass exodus of their technical team having occurred this year. James Key has moved to assist in Sauber&#8217;s resurrection, while Mike Gascoyne has poached some of his ex-Force India colleagues to join him at Lotus. Looking at the five teams that are ahead of Force India in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, it is difficult to see how they can make much more progress.</p>
<h3>5. Mercedes</h3>
<p>It hasn&#8217;t quite gone to plan for Mercedes. Seemingly fed up with McLaren, the manufacturer opted to buy the Brawn team that was so stunningly successful last season. Then, in a <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">crass marketing stunt</a>, they signed Michael Schumacher with much fanfare. Well, it&#8217;s all been a bit of a damp squib.</p>
<p>The car has not met up to expectations, and I have heard rumours that Ross Brawn is not too happy with the way Mercedes run the show (who knows if there is truth in that though).</p>
<p>For my money, Mercedes must have the worst driver line-up with the possible exception of Sauber. Nico Rosberg is relatively well rated. But let us face it &#8212; we all know there is still a question mark as to how good he <em>really</em> is. Meanwhile, it was clear to me from the very start that Michael Schumacher would be rusty, and his performances has fully justified my view.</p>
<p>It would have been much better for both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher if a more sensible driver was chosen. Schumacher could have kept his dignity in retirement; Rosberg could have learnt from a genuinely solid and reliable barometer. Someone like Nick Heidfeld, perhaps. Or, you know, Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello&#8230;</p>
<h3>4. Ferrari</h3>
<p>It has similarly come apart for Ferrari. Although they showed promise at the start of the season, with a win in Bahrain (even if they didn&#8217;t quite have the outright pace). But since then the story has been one of a slow but steady decline as the season has progressed, as Ferrari have failed to keep up the pace of development, and as the Championship has increasingly focussed on Red Bull and McLaren whose cars are far superior.</p>
<p>The drivers have to take their fair share of the blame too. Fernando Alonso has been making many more mistakes than usual, and he is not as enjoyable to watch as he used to be. A worrying development for the person I consider to be the best driver of the past decade. Meanwhile, after a relatively bright start in Bahrain, Felipe Massa has seemed off-colour for most of the season.</p>
<h3>3. Renault</h3>
<p>They may be fifth in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, and, yes, they have the fifth fastest car. But I have elevated Renault in my rankings because it is an astonishing comeback.</p>
<p>It is incredible to think that just a month ago, the Renault F1 Team was mired in the quite unsavoury scandal that became known as &#8216;crashgate&#8217;. Having lost its sponsors and its star driver in addition to its team principal and technical director, you would expect 2010 to be a rebuilding year for Renault.</p>
<p>But the rebuild was swift. The team has rebranded to focus on its racing heritage, feeling less like the team that descended from Benetton. It has a steady new boss in the shape of Eric Boullier, who I think is doing a fantastic job. And its new star driver, Robert Kubica, looks set to become the team&#8217;s long-term centrepiece.</p>
<p>Kubica is doing really well just now and seems happy &#8212; by his standards at least! Vitaly Petrov is a fair bit off his pace, but he has not disgraced himself in my view. It should be remembered that Petrov is the only rookie among even the midfield teams, never mind front-running teams &#8212; so he should be given a bit of room to breathe and develop.</p>
<h3>2. Red Bull</h3>
<p>Red Bull should be number 1 on this list. This ought to be their year. They came out this season with easily the fastest car. Their car is still easily the fastest car. They have two of the best drivers on the grid.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the last little bit &#8212; professionalism, cohesion, restraint &#8212; that takes all these ingredients and turns an operation into a championship winning Formula 1 team is missing. If it isn&#8217;t some kind of reliability problem, it is a strategy goof, or the mother of all mismanagements.</p>
<p>Just now, Red Bull remind me of where McLaren were at a few years ago. Unable to control team mates. Bizarre strategy calls. Constantly walking into traps that they set up for themselves. Somehow conspiring to hoof it over the bar in the face of an open goal.</p>
<p>The statistics illustrate it well. Out of ten races, Red Bull have had nine pole positions, but have had just five wins. They lag behind McLaren in both championships. For a team that has what is probably comfortably the quickest car, Red Bull have managed to immensely stuff it up so far.</p>
<h3>1. McLaren</h3>
<p>McLaren have not been without their troubles this season. At the start of the season, it was clear that their car was not as quick as they would have liked. But the way they are dealing with it is the opposite to Red Bull, and that signals to me that they have learnt a lot from their difficult period in the mid-2000s.</p>
<p>As with Ferrari, they were scuppered by poor tactics during qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, severely compromising their race. Yet they still salvaged a fair points haul. Jenson Button did the same again at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. Even when it goes wrong, McLaren sort it and get it right. McLaren is now more agile and astute in its strategy calls than it was two or three years ago.</p>
<p>Martin Whitmarsh has done an outstanding job to plug the few gaps in McLaren&#8217;s abilities that Ron Dennis left behind. Now McLaren are a formidable force that should never be underestimated.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s pace of development alone makes them stand head and shoulders above the rest. The high-profile failure of their new blown diffuser at Silverstone is only really notable because it is so unusual for a new McLaren part to go wrong. Other teams have this sort of difficulty all the time. Witness the various botched attempts to adopt the F-duct, another part of the McLaren package that makes it the best of 2010 so far.</p>
<p>Then there are the drivers, who are both on song. Despite various figures constantly trying to goad them into a bloody deathmatch, they appear to get on like a house on fire.</p>
<p>Witness the difference between the McLaren team mates and their Red Bull counterparts at Turkey. McLaren&#8217;s drivers had a misunderstanding, but instead of blabbing to the media or making silly hand gestures, the drivers sorted it out with a quick chat after the race. Very professional. Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s and Jenson Button&#8217;s approach is a very healthy approach to racing all round.</p>
<p>That is what makes them championship winners, and today&#8217;s championship leaders. That is why McLaren are still the best team, even when they don&#8217;t necessarily have the best car.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The BBC&#8217;s coverage of Formula 1 is great, but we have become highly accustomed to seeing the same people being interviewed time and time again. Multiple interviews with Martin Whitmarsh and Christian Horner are guaranteed.</p>
<p>And the BBC appears to have a curious obsession with Lotus. It feels like they have been given ten times as much coverage as Virgin and Hispania, the other new teams.</p>
<p>During today&#8217;s qualifying pre-show, I decided to play a spot of BBC F1 bingo on my <a href="http://twitter.com/vee8">F1-based Twitter account @vee8</a>. Following an interview with Lotus driver Jarno Trulli and Mercedes boss Ross Brawn, <a href="http://twitter.com/vee8/status/17085479225">I began to twitch</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>BBC F1 bingo: Lotus &#8211; tick, Ross Brawn &#8211; tick. Now just waiting for Christian Horner and Martin Whitmarsh. Then Whitmarsh again.</p></blockquote>
<p>I got a lot of response, particularly as the interviews with Christian Horner and Martin Whitmarsh duly appeared very soon afterwards! Double Whitmarsh was completed when the McLaren boss was among the first to be interviewed after qualifying had finished.</p>
<p>So I&#8217;ve decided to play for real, this time choosing my five bingo boxes in advance. <a href="http://twitter.com/vee8/status/17091171803">Here are my chosen five</a>:</p>

<p>That is a good-looking bingo card. Sam Michael could easily get a look-in on the back of the very strong performance Williams had in qualifying today. Double Horner could be difficult to achieve though.</p>
<p>Who would you put on your bingo card? Don&#8217;t make it too easy. Throw in a wildcard or a double appearance. It doesn&#8217;t have to be an interview either. For instance, you might like to include gratuitous mentions of Eddie Jordan&#8217;s shirt, an appearance by Tanja Bauer from Sky Deutschland, or Martin Brundle pushing his way in front of another journalist during the gridwalk.</p>
<p>And no Legardisms please. The Legard-bashing is tiresome. Besides, we are ideally looking for all of the boxes to be filled pre-race, before the FOM five minute sting.</p>
<p>Finally, this is nothing against the BBC&#8217;s coverage! I am a big fan of the BBC&#8217;s coverage, which is a quantum leap ahead of what ITV were doing. I would just like a bit more variety in their pre- and post-race coverage.</p>

It had even reached the stage where some people &#8212; including me &#8212; were <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/05/04/are-the-race-stewards-now-too-lenient/">asking if the stewards were being too lenient</a>. Overall, it seems as though the reign of Jean Todt is much less of a nanny state.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, yesterday in Monaco that changed &#8212; and for a typical reason. The rules were simply badly-worded and too ambiguous. And that left plenty of room for two interpretations of the situation.</p>
<p>It is not often you will find me on the side of Michael Schumacher &#8212; especially since, the longer he continues being average, the more I can say &#8220;<a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">I told you so</a>&#8220;. But I sympathise with him and the Mercedes team in this instance.</p>
<h3>What is the new rule for?</h3>
<p>The confusion arises from the introduction of a &#8220;Safety Car line&#8221; for the first time this year. This means that drivers can start overtaking more or less as soon as the Safety Car peels in, rather than having to wait until passing the start line.</p>
<p>I think this has been a slightly under-advertised rule change. I first learnt about it during the Chinese Grand Prix when cars were passing each other into the final corner of the lap during a race restart. So the explanation for the introduction of the Safety Car line is unclear to me.</p>
<p>I assume the idea is just to get the race back under way again as quickly as possible. In that case the idea gets my approval, even though I liked the idea that there was skill involved in timing your restart perfectly for the start / finish line. I remember particularly <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJK8z4HktGI">Fernando Alonso really showing up Jenson Button</a> at a restart during the 2006 Australian Grand Prix &#8212; still one of my favourite Alonso moments.</p>
<p>What a good idea, too, it would have been if this rule had been brought in as a result of last year&#8217;s Australian Grand Prix finishing behind the Safety Car. Allowing the drivers to race towards the finish line, rather than form an orderly queue towards it, would be a good way of maintaining the excitement of a motor race until the end, rather than allowing it to fizzle out like Australia 2009.</p>
<p>It seems as though article 40.13 is specifically designed to prohibit this though. I would be interested to learn of the rationale for this. It seems to me that it would be a particularly good idea to use a device like the Safety Car line <em>only</em> on the final lap &#8212; not on every lap <em>except</em> the final lap!</p>
<h3>The return of Formula None</h3>
<p>I keep coming back to the concept of <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2008/10/12/welcome-to-formula-none-where-racing-is-illegal/">Formula None</a>. This is the curious phenomenon whereby the powers-that-be in F1 decide to outlaw anything that comes dangerously close to becoming <em>motor racing</em>.</p>
<p>Michael Schumacher&#8217;s move on Fernando Alonso was an incredible piece of opportunistic driving. It brought an exciting twist to the final lap. Then again, it becomes less special when you realise that Alonso wasn&#8217;t even thinking that he would have to defend.</p>
<p>I do find it a shame that, in a race which saw <em>no position changes whatsoever</em> in the final 48 laps, the one successful overtaking manoeuvre has been deemed to be illegal &#8212; and for slightly unclear reasons.</p>
<h3>Differing interpretations of article 40.13</h3>
<p>The contentious rule, <a href="http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/65EE8F15945D0941C12576C7005308AE/$FILE/1-2010%20SPORTING%20REGULATIONS%2010-02-2010.pdf">Article 40.13 of the Sporting Regulations</a>, reads as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>If the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking.</p></blockquote>
<p>Looking at the wording of this rule, it is in fact little surprise that it has caused confusion, since it is so badly worded. For one thing, it talks about something that should happen before the end of the race <strong>if a particular state is true at the end of the race</strong>.</p>
<p>You may safely assume that a race will end under &#8220;Safety Car deployed&#8221; conditions if the Safety Car is on track for the final lap. But you nevertheless need time-travel skills from the top drawer in order to carry out the instructions in the sequence that the FIA regulations request.</p>
<p>I admit that is a pedantic point. The real issue is in the definition of &#8220;Safety Car deployed&#8221;. It is clear now that the rules say that Safety Car conditions effectively end when your car passes the Safety Car line on the lap in which the Safety Car enters the pits. For some reason &#8212; unexplained &#8212; this is seemingly different on the final lap.</p>
<p>We must now turn to whether &#8212; theoretically &#8212; the 79th lap of this 78 lap race would have seen the Safety Car continue on the track rather than peel into the pits. This is key to understanding whether or not the race finished under Safety Car conditions.</p>
<p>It seems to me as though a message on the timing screens declaring that the Safety Car will pit in this lap, that could seal the deal. However, this may just be a procedural message, notifying teams and television viewers that the Safety Car will pit, even though Safety Car conditions will not technically end.</p>
<p>Perhaps, then, the &#8220;Track clear&#8221; message will underline the idea that our theoretical 79th lap would run under green flag conditions, and not Safety Car conditions.</p>
<p>If after that there was a shred of doubt, turn your eyes to the marshal posts, where you see a marshal merrily waving a green flag, just next to a big green flashing light (which is operated by Race Control). Surely a green flag always, always, means &#8220;racing&#8221;.</p>
<p>To me, it is absurd to throw out green flags, and yet prohibit overtaking. Even from a safety point of view, it is contradictory to what drivers are surely always told. Green means you can race safely; yellows mean you must slow down and not overtake. Apparently now green means &#8220;cruise to the finish line and don&#8217;t overtake &#8212; but only if you&#8217;re on the last lap, otherwise you can race safely.&#8221;</p>
<p>Are the green flags just for show? Surely if the intention of article 40.13 is to prevent racing in the last few hundred yards of a race just after the Safety Car has pulled in to the pits, the flag should still be yellow.</p>

<p>Looking back to that last Safety Car finish in Australia last year, you can clearly see marshals holding out &#8220;SC&#8221; boards and waving yellow flags as Jenson Button cruises his way towards the finish line. So why has the procedure been confusingly changed this season?</p>
<h3>The decision was far from clear-cut</h3>
<p>In many senses then, Mercedes and Michael Schumacher has a pretty strong case for claiming that racing conditions &#8212; &#8220;green flag&#8221; conditions &#8212; had resumed.</p>
<p>It seems as though their interpretation of the rule was unique. Certainly, Fernando Alonso had been told by Ferrari not to race. Lewis Hamilton was so surprised at Schumacher&#8217;s move that he went on the radio to enquire about it.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2010/05/why_schumacher_broke_the_rules.html">Andrew Benson</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>This interpretation was shared by all the team managers bar that of Mercedes &#8211; I understand that upon seeing Schumacher&#8217;s move every single one of them got in touch with race director Charlie Whiting to say it was not allowed.</p></blockquote>
<p>But the teams appear to sympathise with the Mercedes team&#8217;s point regarding green flags, with <a href="http://twitter.com/legardj/status/14115166581">Jonathan Legard reporting</a> that Mercedes have &#8220;support from other teams&#8221; on this issue, and that the procedure may be reviewed.</p>
<p>Some have tried to suggest that the rule is clear. In fact, it is not clear at all, particularly when the procedure &#8212; to throw out false green flags &#8212; is so confusing.</p>
<p>The fact that it took the stewards approximately <em>two and a half hours</em> to announce their decision denotes that the decision was far from clear-cut. It seems as though there has been a major cock-up in the FIA&#8217;s implementation of this new Safety Car system. As they might say in the areas surrounding Jean Todt&#8217;s office in Place de la Concorde, <em>plus ça change&#8230;</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I have to say I have found the Bahrain Grand Prix boring &#8212; well, the aftermath of it. All the same old whingers keep on stomping their feet about their old hobby-horses. They couldn&#8217;t wait for this season to start so that they could claim that Formula 1 has been broken by <i>X</i>, <i>Y</i> and <i>Z</i>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s despite the fact that the grand prix wasn&#8217;t actually all that bad. Sure, it wasn&#8217;t a sizzler. But hardly the end of F1 as we know it. I reckon there were at least a dozen races in 2009 that played out in a similar way. In fact, this Bahrain Grand Prix had <a href="http://www.cliptheapex.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&#038;t=822"><em>much</em> more overtaking than the average race in 2009</a>, even including the mad wet races.</p>
<p>There can not be a set of &#8220;fans&#8221; that complain more about the sport they follow. And yet, bizarrely, year after year, they carry on watching for some reason. Who&#8217;s the sucker here? It sure ain&#8217;t me.</p>
<h3>Too much hype</h3>
<p>The problem was that, as usual, F1 journalists went into overdrive with the pre-season hype. Time and time again we were told that 2010 was set to be the most exciting in years, although not much in the way of evidence was ever provided in support of this.</p>
<p>We were supposed to be excited because of the return of Michael Schumacher. But as I pointed out months ago, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">he was always bound to be off the pace</a>, and so it proved to be. There will be no eighth world championship. Unless lots of sixth place finishes really get you going, there will be little in the way of excitement round here.</p>
<p>I think the new teams were also supposed to add a new dimension of excitement. They certainly have increased the level of interest in the back of the field &#8212; and a good thing that is too. But quite what else we should have expected as a result of their participation is a head-scratcher for me.</p>
<p>I seem to remember journalists banging on about the all-British inter-team rivalry at McLaren this year as well. That has also turned out to be a bit of a damp squib (so far). But it is not exactly a problem with F1 if one of them has so comprehensively outclassed the other already. Is Lewis Hamilton supposed to drop anchor just in order to increase the excitement here?</p>
<p>I sent the <a href="http://twitter.com/vee8/status/10533692349">hypothetical question out there on Twitter</a> &#8212; Can anyone remember the last time journalists <em>didn&#8217;t</em> say that the coming F1 season was due to be &#8220;the most exciting ever&#8221;? <a href="http://twitter.com/lacanta/status/10535687851">Alianora suggested 2004</a>, which is a good thought. Although it was on the back of a really rather good 2003 season (tyre-rules-rigged-in-favour-of-Ferrari-scandal aside), and there was a lot of interest surrounding the radical Williams &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; (another damp squib).</p>
<h3>The forgotten good news stories</h3>
<p>No wonder people were upset. Not many races could have lived up to these expectations. What was, in truth, an average race (nothing more, nothing less) has been cited by hordes as definitive evidence that F1 is dying.</p>
<p>But I struggle to understand what people were expecting. Indeed, I have been quite surprised at the sheer number of interesting angles on the Bahrain Grand Prix that appear to have been largely overlooked.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Fernando Alonso&#8217;s winning début</strong> &#8212; Okay, so this one has been covered extensively, but it is worth underlining. Alonso joins the select group of drivers to win on their Ferrari début &#8212; and he set a fastest lap over a second quicker than anyone else to boot. Forget the comeback of Michael Schumacher &#8212; Alonso showed his critics that he is the best, and with ease.</li>
<li><strong>Felipe Massa&#8217;s comeback</strong> &#8212; In his first race since his horrific crash in Hungary last year, Massa put in an admirable performance and finished second.</li>
<li><strong>The speed of Red Bull and Vettel</strong> &#8212; Despite the Ferrari 1-2, Red Bull have shown that last year wasn&#8217;t a blip, and they are serious contenders this year.</li>
<li><strong>Nico Rosberg outclassing Michael Schumacher</strong> &#8212; This one doesn&#8217;t fit in with the &#8220;Schumacher is the saviour of F1&#8243; narrative, but even so I&#8217;m surprised more people aren&#8217;t hailing Rosberg&#8217;s success after what must have been a rather difficult winter for him.</li>
<li><strong>McLaren&#8217;s sneaky and massively clever pit stop strategy</strong> &#8212; McLaren appear to have exploited an under-advertised new rule that introduces a 55 metre zone round every pit box, designed to stop unsafe releases. <a href="http://www.onebrow.co.uk/2010/03/17/bahrain-grand-prix-2010/">My brother reckons</a> McLaren are exploiting this to their advantage by bringing their cars in on the same lap as rivals that are just the right amount ahead of them, just to delay the release of that car. Genius (both McLaren and my brother!).</li>
<li><strong>Force India becoming the best of the rest</strong> &#8212; Most will have expected Williams to be the fifth team, but Force India look like they hold that position quite comfortably just now.</li>
<li><strong>A steady performance from Russia&#8217;s first ever F1 driver</strong> &#8212; Vitaly Petrov did a solid job in his first ever F1 race, running in a very respectable 11th place until a suspension failure. Petrov&#8217;s GP2 career was a slow burner, but his F1 career has got off to a bright start.</li>
<li><strong>Lotus beating Toro Rosso</strong> &#8212; This one has been covered extensively too, but it&#8217;s still worth highlighting again. Lotus &#8212; who have only had five months to design and build their car &#8212; have already emerged as the strongest of the new teams. They look to be around equal with Virgin in terms of pace, but definitely have the more reliable car &#8212; and even beat a Toro Rosso. Lotus are also bound to improve more than the other teams. At this rate, I&#8217;d be surprised if they don&#8217;t score a point this season.</li>
<li><strong>Virgin&#8217;s CFD-only gamble not backfiring</strong> &#8212; The question as to whether avoiding the use of a wind tunnel would be fatal to Virgin&#8217;s hopes has been put to bed. The car sets a decent pace, and the biggest problem is in fact reliability.</i>
<li><strong>Hispania&#8217;s miracle breakthrough</strong> &#8212; After a horrific winter, Hispania turned up at Bahrain having never tested, and did a hugely admirable job. Special mention should go to <strong>Karun Chandhok</strong> who did a great job in qualifying despite not even taken part in any practice!</li>
<li><strong>The less said about Sauber the better</strong> &#8212; although it&#8217;s still an interesting story.</li>
</ul>
<p>It looks to me as though there is plenty for F1 fans to sink their teeth into just now, if only they tried. It is just that there was so much hype about the wrong things that the wood has been lost for all the trees.</p>
<h3>But it can be improved</h3>
<p>However, like most people I would prefer Formula 1 to have more wheel-to-wheel action. The signs at Sakhir were not particularly encouraging. I will reveal my thoughts on what&#8217;s what when it comes to on-the-track action in my next article.</p>

The final paragraph is worth quoting in full, not only because it makes an interesting point, but because it elegantly quotes Adam Smith. (Motorsport, economics and my home town of Kirkcaldy all in one little paragraph!)</p>
<blockquote><p>This is the legacy of the holy war waged by the former FIA president. The cause in question was to allow smaller teams to get into Formula 1. This is the outcome: two teams will limp into the start of the championship, a third is being pushed into the ring by an invisible hand – you can be sure it is not the hand of Adam Smith – and, as for the fourth, well, you would do better to call on Missing Persons to locate it. In the meantime, we have lost two constructors along the way, in the shape of BMW and Toyota, while at Renault, there’s not much left other than the name. Was it all worth it?</p></blockquote>
<p>As fans have watched the progress (and non-progress) of the new teams over winter, many will have been wondering just how much of a success the FIA&#8217;s initiative to introduce new teams have been. A lot of political turmoil was caused last year when the FIA all of a sudden decided that ten teams on the grid is not enough.</p>
<p>Never mind the fact that there were just ten teams on the grid for the majority of the past decade, and it was never viewed as a problem before. And never mind that it was Max Mosley who originally said that the existence of teams like Williams was not how he envisaged the future of Formula 1.</p>
<p>Just like that &#8212; to prove some kind of political point, or maybe just for a bit of a scrap &#8212; he changed his mind. New privateers were now essential for the future of the sport. Manufacturers were driven out, to the point where basically only Mercedes are left (and Ferrari remain, but clearly unhappy with the way the sport is run).</p>
<h3>Quantity over quality?</h3>
<p>Formula 1 2010 brings yet another radical new look to the sport. There is no doubt that the greatly shaken-up grid has generated a large amount of interest. But there is a distinctly different style to the grid. This brings us to ask: is the new way better than the old way?</p>
<p>In recent years, the emphasis has been on the <em>quality</em> of the participants. Yes, there were relatively few entrants. Costs were sky-high. But viewers were guaranteed to be watching the best of the best.</p>
<p>It is probably no exaggeration to say that the 20 drivers in F1 were among the 25-or-so most capable people for the job. Pay drivers, who have been a fixture of motorsport since its earliest days, had all but vanished. Even the very worst of recent F1 drivers &#8212; the likes of Romain Grosjean or Nelsinho Piquet &#8212; would put drivers like Jean-Denis Délétraz or Ricardo Rosset in the shade.</p>
<p>I am all for new and privateer teams coming into F1. But it should be a proper process, and not rushed and contrived like the situation this year.</p>
<p>Although the history of the <a href="http://f1rejects.com/">F1 Rejects</a> &#8212; the remarkable drivers who ploughed on with their F1 careers despite not ever having a hope of achieving anything &#8212; is long and proud, the pinnacle of motorsport ought to be the pinnacle of motorsport. Right now, F1 is going through a process of artificial watering down. This is thanks to the FIA.</p>
<h3>The FIA&#8217;s fundamental misunderstanding of motorsport</h3>
<p>I have been genuinely worried by the FIA in recent years. They seem to have genuinely no idea what makes motorsport great. Witness the continued decline of the World Rally Championship. While it is currently undergoing a slight boost thanks to Kimi Räikkönen, it is otherwise a shadow of its former self. Meanwhile, the relatively new Intercontinental Rally Challenge, just a few years old and more or less invented by a television company, continues to gain admirers.</p>
<p>IRC is attracting attention because it gives the fans what they want. Meanwhile, the FIA continue to do mad things with the WRC, such as messing around with the calendar unnecessarily.</p>
<p>Up until recently, the idea that the FIA were <em>totally</em> clueless was just a hunch of mine. Sure, it has <em>appeared</em> that way for a long time. But maybe they saw the bigger picture. Perhaps the crazy &#8220;world engine&#8221; concept &#8212; whereby Formula 1, World Rally and World Touring cars would all share the same engine &#8212; really was needed in order to save the environment.</p>
<p>Well, no. It simply derives from a fundamental misunderstanding about what makes motorsport exciting to so many people.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/2010/01/20/januarys-audio-podcast/">January edition</a> of the excellent <a href="http://www.motorsportmagazine.co.uk/category/audio-podcasts/">Motor Sport magazine podcast</a> contained a truly shocking revelation that I&#8217;m surprised more hasn&#8217;t been made of. I urge you to listen to it. The relevant section is 35 minutes and 50 seconds in.</p>
<p>Motorsport journalist Nigel Roebuck recounts a meeting with Max Mosley:</p>
<blockquote><p>He did actually say at one point &#8212; and he meant it, he wasn&#8217;t being facetious &#8212; we were talking about the spectators and he said, &#8220;Would they miss the noise, Nigel, do you think?&#8221;</p>
<p>I couldn&#8217;t believe he was asking the question. I said, &#8220;Max, the noise is <em>half</em> of it.&#8221;</p>
<p>And then he said, &#8220;I always find when I&#8217;m watching the race on television, the engine noise is such a distraction. I can&#8217;t hear what the commentator&#8217;s saying sometimes.&#8221;</p>
<p>And he wasn&#8217;t being facetious. It did strike me then &#8212; it does worry me. You know, &#8220;you and Bernie are the most powerful people in motor racing, and you&#8217;re not actually sure of the answer to that question. In which case, you&#8217;ve missed the point entirely.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Thanks to the FIA&#8217;s recent moves, we are now in a situation where Formula 1 is no longer the elite sport that it was. I have recently been asked if the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/107%25_rule">107% rule</a> &#8212; whereby excessively slow cars are weeded out during qualifying &#8212; is still in force. It hasn&#8217;t been for years, but it&#8217;s telling that some people haven&#8217;t even noticed that the rule was ditched long ago, but are now interested to find out if it still exists.</p>
<p>For the past few years, it didn&#8217;t matter whether the 107% rule existed or not. Every team was capable of producing a competitive car. Not this year.</p>
<p>Incidentally, the quotes from Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone about the introduction of the 107% rule are very interesting in relation to their recent policy of encouraging more small teams, regardless of their quality:</p>
<p>Max Mosley: &#8220;Any small team which is properly organised will be able to get within the the 107 per cent margin.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bernie Ecclestone: &#8220;Formula 1 is the best. And we don&#8217;t need anything in it that isn&#8217;t the best.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>To break this process in gently, I have decided to make the first post a light-hearted look at what might happen in the 2010 Formula 1 season.</em></p>

<h3>The season will be the most exciting ever, but the title of the DVD will make it sound like a wet Wednesday</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002RWJFBO?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=B002RWJFBO"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51c7p7AcVwL._SL500_AA168_.jpg" alt="Formula 1 Season Review 2009 cover" class="picture" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=B002RWJFBO" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />In 2006, Fernando Alonso took his second World Championship in scintillating style that went down to the wire. The title of the official Formula 1 season review DVD was &#8220;Once Again&#8221;, making it sound like your drunk uncle has just wet himself for the umpteenth time.</p>
<p>In 2007, after a tense season-long battle between McLaren team-mates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen amazed the world by snatching the title from both of them in the final race of the season, overcoming a 17 point deficit with two races to go. The DVD was called &#8220;Kimi made it at last&#8221;, as though he had just come home late from a heavy night.</p>
<p>In 2008 Lewis Hamilton took the Championship in heart attack-inducing style on the last corner of the last lap of the last race. The DVD was called &#8220;Luck does not come into it&#8221;, which I <em>still</em> haven&#8217;t worked out the meaning of.</p>
<p>And the DVD really sold the 2009 season well by calling it &#8220;Not in a hurry&#8230;&#8221;, as if Jenson Button did not have a record-breaking winning streak at the start of the season.</p>
<p>Even if the Championship showdown is host to the first ever alien visit to this planet and is settled with a massive 200mph laser gun fight involving seventeen drivers from the planet Q&#8217;txxp&#8217;he, it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if the DVD was given some madly dull title like, &#8220;I&#8217;d rather be watching paint dry&#8221;, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Corrie on the other side?&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;d stick with watching lawn bowls if I were you&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Confectionery diffuser face-off</h3>
<p>2009 was the year of the Double Decker diffusers. The 2010 pre-season testing period has seen a similar curiosity surrounding the rear end of F1 cars, with teams being notably coy about showing off their behinds.</p>
<p>The concept has now moved way beyond Double Decker diffusers. Among the new types of diffuser will be Red Bull&#8217;s Drifter diffuser, McLaren&#8217;s Mars Bar diffuser, Toro Rosso&#8217;s Curly Wurly diffuser and USF1&#8242;s Snickers diffuser. However, once again, Ross Brawn will find the upper hand when he reveals Mercedes&#8217;s Boost diffuser.</p>
<h3>FOM will fail to improve television coverage</h3>
<p>Although Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s FOM is supposedly covering the world&#8217;s most technologically advanced sport, the television pictures will still resemble a smudgy YouTube video. Bernie Ecclestone will insist that there is no need for HD coverage because, &#8220;my IT guy told me he swears by his old CRT television&#8221;.</p>

<p>Despite the decision to give HD the cold shoulder, FOM will stick with their existing on-screen graphics, which are so small that they are actually bloody impossible to read on any 4:3 display. They may be declaring the start of World War III on those captions for all I know.</p>
<h3>Intense McLaren Championship rivalry</h3>
<p>The title will come down to the wire in Abu Dhabi, with the main protagonists being McLaren team mates Hamilton and Button.</p>
<p>Towards the end of the race, John Button will think he has the upper hand by unleashing his killer move &#8211; undoing the last button on his shirt. Little will he anticipate that Anthony Hamilton will win the Championship by staring even more intensely.</p>
<h3>Michael Schumacher will be the world&#8217;s most superstitious man</h3>
<p>Following on from the revelation that Michael Schumacher has a mad <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns22036.html">superstition for odd numbers</a>, the German will reveal a litany of hitherto unknown superstitions. Among these will be an insistence that his team mate runs with an inferior set-up because &#8220;it makes me feel a bit better about my car&#8221;.</p>
<p>He will also reveal that he has a special form of OCD that means he just has to brake-test any drivers that are behind him, and cannot stop himself from driving straight into anyone who has just overtaken him. He also has a strong superstition for getting to choose his own parking space, and will park his Mercedes car in Race Control, where he can literally control the race by tampering with the timing system.</p>
<p>No-one will think to point any of this out, because nothing is allowed to get in the way of Princess Michelle&#8217;s Fairy Tale Comeback.</p>
<h3>Cosmopolitan Valencia will continue grid boy tradition</h3>
<p>Valencia&#8217;s tradition of having grid boys in addition to grid girls at the European Grand Prix will continue. Coincidentally, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/flav.jpg">Flavio Briatore will make his F1 comeback</a> at the very same race.</p>
<h3>New teams to struggle</h3>

<p>New teams will be unable to shake off speculation surrounding their ability to see out the season. While the early focus will be on USF1 and Campos, the spotlight will soon switch to Virgin Racing.</p>
<p>Suspicions will be raised mid-season when the Virgin team mysteriously re-brands with a green livery and makes a formal application to change its name to &#8216;Zavvi&#8217;. A few months later, the team will run out of money and close down, but not before a special fixtures and fittings sale where fans will have the opportunity to buy the screws that once held the car together.</p>
<h3>The bearded beggar who appears at races is not homeless</h3>
<p>Having made a tactical error by trying to get a drive at Mercedes only for some seven time World Champion or other to get in the way, Nick Heidfeld will begin the 2010 season without a job. He will resort to sleeping on the floor in the paddock and begging.</p>
<p>If you see a suspicious-looking bearded man in the paddock, it is probably Mr Heidfeld, the world&#8217;s greatest ever second place finisher. Although he might speak as though he is slightly drunk, he is not homeless and is perfectly harmless.</p>
