			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Over the past week or so, rumours that big changes are afoot at Williams have been ramping up.</p>
<p>Last week when I saw that a German website had written about this, I prepared a simple but telling graph looking at the form of Williams over the years. But I refrained from publishing it in case my conclusions were overly harsh.</p>
<p>But today the team&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90865">technical director Sam Michael has come out</a> and said for himself that the recent performance of Williams is not good enough.</p>
<blockquote><p>What I would not be happy with doing would be not changing anything – even myself. Even if everyone said everything is perfect, I know it is not. So, I am not happy with the job that we have done as a group. I would review that anyway – including myself. I don&#8217;t exclude myself from any of that.</p>
<p>I, as technical director, have chosen the technical team that works for me&#8230; They are all people that I have chosen to put in those positions, so if it doesn&#8217;t work then it is my responsibility.</p></blockquote>
<p>This is refreshing honesty. It is no secret that Williams&#8217;s form has been disappointing in the last few years. But it has never been properly confronted.</p>
<p>In the light of Sam Michael&#8217;s comments, here is the graph. It tracks the Constructors&#8217; Championship positions of Williams throughout its 32 years in Formula 1. Alongside the annual positions, I have added a five-year rolling average to allow us to see the longer term trends.</p>

<p>It is well-known that Williams has always been a highly successful grand prix team. The 1980s were a bit of a rollercoaster. The team mixed hugely successful years with a few more disappointing years. Overall, the trend has been for the team to hover around 3rd place on average.</p>
<p>Then came the mid-1990s, when Williams were truly dominant. This was the period where Adrian Newey was on board. It is almost impossible for the five-year trend to get any higher, as the team strung together an incredible seven consecutive top-two finishes.</p>
<p>It is no secret that Williams have never dominated in this way ever since Adrian Newey left in 1997. But looking at the trend, Williams continued to average around 3rd place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship &#8212; if anything, still slightly better than the pre-Adrian Newey years. But in the middle of the 2000s, it begins to change for the worse &#8212; dramatically.</p>
<p>In fact, if you look at the trendline, with no other knowledge I think you could actually guess when Sam Michael became technical director. In case you haven&#8217;t spotted it, I have added a subtle hint that pinpoints the year.</p>

<p>This could well be a harsh assessment. Sam Michael seems to be well respected among his colleagues at Williams. But from the outside, it has long perplexed me why there hasn&#8217;t been more of a question mark over Sam Michael&#8217;s role.</p>
<p>The team has made many changes in recent years. They have switched engine manufacturers from BMW to Cosworth via Toyota. They have brought on board hugely experienced drivers (Alexander Wurz, Rubens Barrichello) along with promising rookies (Nico Rosberg, Nico Hülkenberg). And there have been lots of changes behind the scenes with the operation of the business. None of these changes have done the trick.</p>
<p>Now, with Williams enduring their worst start to an F1 season since their very first one in 1978, it is crunch time. They need to face up to their issues properly.</p>
<p>We know the problem is not money. After all, the team keeps telling us they have no money worries whatsoever!</p>
<p>Currently the team languishes in 10th place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, behind Lotus, a team that is not yet two years old. Indeed, in China, Pastor Maldonado was beaten fair and square by Heikki Kovalainen in the Lotus.</p>
<p>Amazingly, this position is <em>up</em> from the situation after Malaysia, when the team was also behind Virgin in the Constructors&#8217; Championship. Virgin is another team looking carefully at its technical set-up, as Nick Wirth&#8217;s CFD-only approach fails to prove its worth.</p>
<p>Here, just for fun, is the graph of Williams&#8217;s Constructors&#8217; Championship positions with their current 10th place for 2011 added.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Whether you like or dislike the philosophy behind Pirelli&#8217;s tyres, which have been designed to be dodgy, there is one undenable benefit. It leaves those that cannot manage their tyres exposed.</p>
<p>Lewis Hamilton has long had a repuation for ruining his tyres too quickly. Up to this point, it has only bitten him once in a while. The benign Bridgestones were, for the most part, accommodating to Hamilton&#8217;s excesses.</p>
<p>But with Pirellis that are designed to drop off in performance quickly, Hamilton may find himself being bitten more often. The McLaren car is performing well, yet Hamilton was only able to finish 8th in the race.</p>
<p><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13028572.stm">He put this down</a> to having to stop early, then stop early again, and again &#8212; and again. And it is that final fourth stop that really sealed Hamilton&#8217;s fate. While early stops may not have been ideal, if he only made three of them he could have salvaged a few more points.</p>
<p>But here we come to Hamilton&#8217;s second weakness &#8212; his lack of strategy nous. Hamilton has been feeling the heat for being weak on strategy and relying on McLaren to call too many of the shots.</p>
<p>What is interesting is that in this instance, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/13029197.stm">according to Ted Kravitz</a>, Hamilton went <em>against</em> the advice of his McLaren strategists. McLaren advised that, despite the excessive tyre wear, Hamilton might have been able to hang on to finish 5th or 6th if he stayed out. However, Hamilton decided to make the extra pitstop nonetheless.</p>
<p>It is not often that we see Hamilton act autonomously like this, but sadly it backfired on him. If F1 in 2011 is going to involve better tyre management and more strategic thinking, this could play right into the hands of Jenson Button.</p>
<p>While tyre management and strategy are two of Hamilton&#8217;s biggest weaknesses, they are Button&#8217;s greatest strengths. At least twice in 2010 we saw Button use making smart strategic decisions that helped him win races. In Australia he went against the advice of McLaren, and went on to win the race. China, too, saw Button capitalise on good strategy.</p>
<p>If Hamilton seemed overly despondent after the Malaysia Grand Prix, it may be because it was the moment the penny dropped that he is going to find F1 a whole lot more difficult from now on. And it won&#8217;t be fixed by having a faster car &#8212; because in these conditions, Button will always come out on top.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While it is by no means unheard of for pieces of bodywork to come off an F1 car from time to time, there has already been quite a lot of it this season. In fact, after one and a half race weekends, I can think of four big bodywork failures.</p>
<p>Firstly, there was <strong>Kamui Kobayashi&#8217;s</strong> engine cover detatching itself during practice in Australia. Sauber have since modified the bodywork.</p>
<p>During the Australian Grand Prix, <strong>Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s</strong> floor became loose.</p>
<p><strong>Nick Heidfeld</strong> also had a substantial amount of damage to his car&#8217;s bodywork, and it&#8217;s not clear how it happened. There is apparently no TV footage of it, and to my knowledge there has been no real explanation of what actually happened to cause the damage.</p>
<p>Then this morning the qualifying session for the Malaysian Grand Prix was halted after <strong>Sébastien Buemi&#8217;s</strong> left sidepod flew off his car and settled on the racing line.</p>
<p>There is every chance that this is all a coincidence, but I do find it intriguing that so much bodywork has fallen off the F1 cars this season already, and the second race hasn&#8217;t even started yet.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> I have been reminded by <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/F1Times/status/56759513998561280">The F1 Times on Twitter</a> that two onboard cameras have also fallen off this season already. Felipe Massa&#8217;s came off in Practice 3 in Australia, while Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s detatched in Practice 3 in Malaysia.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I wonder what Timo Glock is thinking just now. Following an impressive early career, and after showing flashes of talent at Toyota for two years, Glock faced a difficult decision prior to the 2010 season.</p>
<h3>Renault or Virgin? Once upon a time it was a tough choice</h3>
<p>His first option was to take a risk and sign for Renault, whose future was on the line. At the time it was said that Glock was considering driving for Renault, Robert Kubica was seeking assurances about the team&#8217;s future. Renault were beginning to phase out their involvement in running an F1 team.</p>
<p>His other option was to sign for a new team, Virgin, but one that was not likely to have the plug pulled on its future so soon. Glock chose this option.</p>
<h3>Virgin&#8217;s struggles</h3>
<p>No doubt, with the information he had at his disposal at the time, Timo Glock had a difficult decision to make. But today, he must feel sick about his choice.</p>
<p>He is making increasingly frustrated noises about Virgin&#8217;s lack of progress. He first complained that <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89920">Virgin had lost ground</a> to the teams it was targeting, such as Toro Rosso. Then he began to <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/90171">question whether Virgin was even capable of qualifying</a> for races following the reinstatement of the 107% rule.</p>
<p>Judging by Virgin&#8217;s performance in Australia, these fears were well founded. And what&#8217;s more, they risk slipping back even further.</p>
<h3>Threatened even by Hispania</h3>
<p>For Malaysia, Hispania will be looking to race with their 2011-spec front wing. Their new front wing failed a crash test, apparently by a minuscule margin. So they used a 2010 front wing in Australia. But if they can fit the new wing for Malaysia, the hot word is that Hispania could be faster than Virgin.</p>
<p>That would be seriously embarrassing for Virgin. The team has staked its reputation on Nick Wirth&#8217;s idea that a competitive car can be designed without the use of a wind tunnel. They just about got away with it last year. But this year, with Virgin&#8217;s lack of progress, a serious question mark is beginning to hang over the CFD-only method.</p>
<p>Over the winter, the Hispania team has become something of a laughing stock. Struggling for cash, the team has done the bare minimum of running. It did no testing. Before attempting to qualify in Australia, they had only completed the merest figleaf of an installation lap.</p>
<p>They then failed to qualify for the race. It was worryingly reminiscent of what Arrows did in 2002 in its final few races before it had to close down, when the drivers deliberately failed to qualify in order to avoid the costs of racing while still meeting their contractual requirements.</p>
<p>However, a recent article by James Allen suggests that <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/03/what-is-hispanias-place-in-formula-1/">the future for Hispania</a> may be more promising than Australia&#8217;s performance indicated.</p>
<h3>While Virgin struggle, Renault are flying</h3>
<p>That article also says that Glock &#8220;looked a haunted man&#8221; following the Australian Grand Prix. It&#8217;s easy to imagine why, when you consider again the choice he faced before 2010.</p>
<p>The team he apparently walked away from, Renault, is on the up and up. While Renault themselves may have more or less pulled out entirely, the team now has solid backing from Genii Capital, a group that appears to mean business in F1. The team also has major, prominent backing from Proton, who are using the team to promote their Group Lotus activities.</p>
<p>The Renault car itself is in great shape too. Its innovative exhaust system is one of the most talked-about car developments of the winter. And Vitaly Petrov&#8217;s solid run to third place in Australia sent a strong signal that, while Renault may not exactly be title contenders, they are certainly out to give the front runners a real run for their money.</p>
<p>So, the situation could hardly have gone worse for Timo Glock. He had a difficult decision to make, but as things stand it has turned out to be unambiguously the wrong one. It could cost his career dearly. To be pottering around in a car that may not even be fast enough to qualify does not befit a driver of Timo Glock&#8217;s stature.</p>
<p>With Virgin worrying about 107% while Petrov stands on the podium, it is easy to see why Glock would look haunted.</p>

<h3>6. Force India</h3>
<p>Force India have come along way in the past couple of years. From being perennial tail-enders, they are now solid midfield runners and can regularly expect to beat the likes of Williams, BMW Sauber and Toro Rosso. Vijay Mallya has succeeded where Alex Schnaider and Spyker failed.</p>
<p>A question mark remains over the driver lineup. I still find Adrian Sutil rather unimpressive. In his fourth season, surely we should be seeing more. And Vitantonio Liuzzi, while showing flashes of excellence, has generally failed to live up to expectations.</p>
<p>Force India also need to be careful that their progress up the grid does not come to a shuddering halt, with a mass exodus of their technical team having occurred this year. James Key has moved to assist in Sauber&#8217;s resurrection, while Mike Gascoyne has poached some of his ex-Force India colleagues to join him at Lotus. Looking at the five teams that are ahead of Force India in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, it is difficult to see how they can make much more progress.</p>
<h3>5. Mercedes</h3>
<p>It hasn&#8217;t quite gone to plan for Mercedes. Seemingly fed up with McLaren, the manufacturer opted to buy the Brawn team that was so stunningly successful last season. Then, in a <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">crass marketing stunt</a>, they signed Michael Schumacher with much fanfare. Well, it&#8217;s all been a bit of a damp squib.</p>
<p>The car has not met up to expectations, and I have heard rumours that Ross Brawn is not too happy with the way Mercedes run the show (who knows if there is truth in that though).</p>
<p>For my money, Mercedes must have the worst driver line-up with the possible exception of Sauber. Nico Rosberg is relatively well rated. But let us face it &#8212; we all know there is still a question mark as to how good he <em>really</em> is. Meanwhile, it was clear to me from the very start that Michael Schumacher would be rusty, and his performances has fully justified my view.</p>
<p>It would have been much better for both Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher if a more sensible driver was chosen. Schumacher could have kept his dignity in retirement; Rosberg could have learnt from a genuinely solid and reliable barometer. Someone like Nick Heidfeld, perhaps. Or, you know, Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello&#8230;</p>
<h3>4. Ferrari</h3>
<p>It has similarly come apart for Ferrari. Although they showed promise at the start of the season, with a win in Bahrain (even if they didn&#8217;t quite have the outright pace). But since then the story has been one of a slow but steady decline as the season has progressed, as Ferrari have failed to keep up the pace of development, and as the Championship has increasingly focussed on Red Bull and McLaren whose cars are far superior.</p>
<p>The drivers have to take their fair share of the blame too. Fernando Alonso has been making many more mistakes than usual, and he is not as enjoyable to watch as he used to be. A worrying development for the person I consider to be the best driver of the past decade. Meanwhile, after a relatively bright start in Bahrain, Felipe Massa has seemed off-colour for most of the season.</p>
<h3>3. Renault</h3>
<p>They may be fifth in the Constructors&#8217; Championship, and, yes, they have the fifth fastest car. But I have elevated Renault in my rankings because it is an astonishing comeback.</p>
<p>It is incredible to think that just a month ago, the Renault F1 Team was mired in the quite unsavoury scandal that became known as &#8216;crashgate&#8217;. Having lost its sponsors and its star driver in addition to its team principal and technical director, you would expect 2010 to be a rebuilding year for Renault.</p>
<p>But the rebuild was swift. The team has rebranded to focus on its racing heritage, feeling less like the team that descended from Benetton. It has a steady new boss in the shape of Eric Boullier, who I think is doing a fantastic job. And its new star driver, Robert Kubica, looks set to become the team&#8217;s long-term centrepiece.</p>
<p>Kubica is doing really well just now and seems happy &#8212; by his standards at least! Vitaly Petrov is a fair bit off his pace, but he has not disgraced himself in my view. It should be remembered that Petrov is the only rookie among even the midfield teams, never mind front-running teams &#8212; so he should be given a bit of room to breathe and develop.</p>
<h3>2. Red Bull</h3>
<p>Red Bull should be number 1 on this list. This ought to be their year. They came out this season with easily the fastest car. Their car is still easily the fastest car. They have two of the best drivers on the grid.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the last little bit &#8212; professionalism, cohesion, restraint &#8212; that takes all these ingredients and turns an operation into a championship winning Formula 1 team is missing. If it isn&#8217;t some kind of reliability problem, it is a strategy goof, or the mother of all mismanagements.</p>
<p>Just now, Red Bull remind me of where McLaren were at a few years ago. Unable to control team mates. Bizarre strategy calls. Constantly walking into traps that they set up for themselves. Somehow conspiring to hoof it over the bar in the face of an open goal.</p>
<p>The statistics illustrate it well. Out of ten races, Red Bull have had nine pole positions, but have had just five wins. They lag behind McLaren in both championships. For a team that has what is probably comfortably the quickest car, Red Bull have managed to immensely stuff it up so far.</p>
<h3>1. McLaren</h3>
<p>McLaren have not been without their troubles this season. At the start of the season, it was clear that their car was not as quick as they would have liked. But the way they are dealing with it is the opposite to Red Bull, and that signals to me that they have learnt a lot from their difficult period in the mid-2000s.</p>
<p>As with Ferrari, they were scuppered by poor tactics during qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, severely compromising their race. Yet they still salvaged a fair points haul. Jenson Button did the same again at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago. Even when it goes wrong, McLaren sort it and get it right. McLaren is now more agile and astute in its strategy calls than it was two or three years ago.</p>
<p>Martin Whitmarsh has done an outstanding job to plug the few gaps in McLaren&#8217;s abilities that Ron Dennis left behind. Now McLaren are a formidable force that should never be underestimated.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s pace of development alone makes them stand head and shoulders above the rest. The high-profile failure of their new blown diffuser at Silverstone is only really notable because it is so unusual for a new McLaren part to go wrong. Other teams have this sort of difficulty all the time. Witness the various botched attempts to adopt the F-duct, another part of the McLaren package that makes it the best of 2010 so far.</p>
<p>Then there are the drivers, who are both on song. Despite various figures constantly trying to goad them into a bloody deathmatch, they appear to get on like a house on fire.</p>
<p>Witness the difference between the McLaren team mates and their Red Bull counterparts at Turkey. McLaren&#8217;s drivers had a misunderstanding, but instead of blabbing to the media or making silly hand gestures, the drivers sorted it out with a quick chat after the race. Very professional. Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s and Jenson Button&#8217;s approach is a very healthy approach to racing all round.</p>
<p>That is what makes them championship winners, and today&#8217;s championship leaders. That is why McLaren are still the best team, even when they don&#8217;t necessarily have the best car.</p>

<p>I am a bit late to the party here, but I want to cover this issue &#8212; and a couple of others &#8212; briefly now. I am afraid once again real life has conspired against me, and if I don’t push these out quickly before I know it the Spanish Grand Prix will have been and gone.</p>
<p>After all, three races have been since I last wrote about F1. Unbelievable, I know. And I have promised loyal readers and commenters from the old vee8 days, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/04/27/the-future-of-this-blog/#comment-1529095">EGC</a> and <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/04/27/the-future-of-this-blog/#comment-1530156">Can</a>, that I will write about recent events, so I really should. Thanks, by the way, for your continued loyalty!</p>

<p>It has been widely noted that the stewards appear to be more lenient this season. This seems to be an initiative of Jean Todt&#8217;s, and many are putting it down to the presence of former drivers in the stewards&#8217; room &#8212; an innovation for this season.</p>
<p>I must say that I feel that this new approach is much preferable to the old regime, where often normal racing incidents would bizarrely be punished. The worst points came in 2008, when I feared that Formula 1 was becoming <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2008/10/12/welcome-to-formula-none-where-racing-is-illegal/">Formula None, where racing is illegal</a>.</p>
<p>However, there is a balance to be struck. There are two incidents in particular that perhaps deserved punishment, both involving <strong>Lewis Hamilton</strong>.</p>
<p>The first was his weaving down the straight at Malaysia, trying to break Vitaly Petrov&#8217;s tow. First of all, full marks must be given to Petrov for managing to get Hamilton rattled enough for him to do this. When I watched it at first I thought it was extraordinary, but also exciting to watch.</p>
<p>For me, this is the sort of racing that is okay. In way, it&#8217;s how racing should be &#8212; right on the edge, a bit risky, pushing the envelope. Weaving along the straight is okay in my view&#8230; Then again, I&#8217;m not a driver. <img src='http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>It would be a very different matter to weave in the braking zone. But Hamilton stuck to his line once he started braking, making it tough but clean racing in my book.</p>
<p>I think it was right for Hamilton to be given a warning. It should not have gone un-noted, but any larger punishment than that would have been too harsh.</p>
<p>What <em>should</em> have been punished, however, was Hamilton&#8217;s antics down the pitlane in China. I am thinking in particular about his decision to race Sebastian Vettel towards the pitlane exit.</p>
<p>Too much focus was placed on the timing of McLaren&#8217;s lollipop man. I think what the lollipop man did is irrelevant in this instance. I understand that Hamilton is a racer, but once both drivers had reached the speed limit, Vettel was clearly ahead. In this case, Hamilton should have deferred, and lined up behind him in the &#8216;racing&#8217; lane of the pitlane. After all, Vettel was only ever going to end up ahead anyway, as he could switch off his limiter first.</p>
<p>The pitlane is not a place for racing, and safety must come first. I was therefore surprised to see that, yet again, this sort of behaviour has been let off with little more than a wrap across the knuckles. It reminded me a lot of Felipe Massa being let off for something very similar at the 2008 European Grand Prix. I find it bizarre that something potentially so dangerous is seemingly not taken so seriously by the FIA.</p>
<p>It was also worrying that the stewards decided only to investigate the incident after the race was finished. I think incidents should be looked into as soon as possible, with penalties being applied after the race only in exceptional circumstances.</p>
<p>It is worth looking also at the way drivers enter the pitlane as well as exiting it. Once again, Lewis Hamilton fell foul here, when he decided to effectively drive the wrong way across the race track to enter the pitlane after he had passed the actual entrance. It&#8217;s the sort of thing you do on a video game &#8212; should it really be allowed in real life?</p>
<p>There has been a lot of talk also about Fernando Alonso pushing his way past Felipe Massa on the way into the pitlane. Very feisty stuff, and very marginal. You might say it ought to be banned, but it was very exciting to watch, and possibly a pivotal moment in the drivers&#8217; relationship within Ferrari.</p>
<p>But then, what are the white lines for?&#8230;</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t think there is much need to justify why I have placed Piquet at the bottom of the list. Suffice it to say that I hope he never races competitively again.</p>
<h3>24. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Sébastien Bourdais spent the 2008 season explaining that we should wait to judge him until the return of slicks in 2009. Slicks came in 2009. He has been duly judged.</p>
<h3>23. Romain Grosjean</h3>
<p>I feel a little bit sorry for Romain Grosjean. He was thrown into as difficult a situation as it is possible to imagine. Having done no testing whatsoever, he became Renault&#8217;s second driver just in time for a massive scandal involving Renault&#8217;s previous second driver to envelop the team. He didn&#8217;t perform very well, but they were exceptionally difficult circumstances in my view.</p>
<h3>22. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>I thought Nakajima did a good job in 2008, but 2009 was a huge disappointment. His main achievement of the season was to qualify an admittedly impressive 5th place for the British Grand Prix. However, his race was poor and he finished 11th. Way to hoof it over the bar.</p>
<h3>21. Jaime Alguersuari</h3>
<p>As with the other drivers who were expected to hit the ground running mid-season, Alguersuari was disadvantaged by the fact that he had done no testing. It may also be said that he was brought into F1 too quickly by the impatient Red Bull driver development juggernaut. While he was British F3 Champion of 2008, he was having a moderate season in World Series by Renault and may have befitted from some extra time to develop his skills away from the intense spotlight of F1. As a result, Alguersuari spent a lot of his time crashing or being rather unspectacular.</p>
<h3>20. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>I do wish Adrian Sutil could show us something &#8212; anything &#8212; that would once and for all conclude that he fully deserves a place in F1. He does show flashes of potential, but contrives to throw his chances away. He could have had a decent points finish in China if he had been more careful in the worsening weather conditions. And he has gained a reputation for being involved in a lot of needless crashes. His crash with Nick Heidfeld in Singapore following a needless spin was particularly unnecessary. This was made all the worse by the fact that he pulled off a frighteningly similar manoeuvre in Japan at the following race. His performance in Belgium looked poor in comparison with his team mate who battled for the win all race long. The main saving grace was a fourth place in Italy.</p>
<h3>19. Luca Badoer</h3>
<p>Yes, Luca Badoer was massively disappointing as the substitute for Felipe Massa at Ferrari. However, as I have written before, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">he had a harder job than anyone else</a> on the grid, being expected to become instantly competitive after 10 years away from racing. Given the circumstances, I think Luca Badoer performed quite admirably. It is not as though Fisichella could do much more in that Ferrari &#8212; and he didn&#8217;t have the excuse of being out of practice for a decade.</p>
<h3>18. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>I think Buemi did a decent job overall in 2009, although it&#8217;s difficult to remember any real stand-out moments. He should have another year in F1, but ought to show more in 2010 in order to justify his continued presence on the grid.</p>
<h3>17. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>2009 was another disappointing year for Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn was totally outclassed by his team mate all season long, and never looked like a driver who deserves to be driving for a team as good as McLaren. He seems competent enough, but clearly lacks the hunger and seems incapable of putting in a truly great performance.</p>
<h3>16. Vitantonio Liuzzi</h3>
<p>Liuzzi made his long-overdue return to the cockpit in a Force India this year. He did a great job at his first race back in Monza, but was slightly disappointing for the remainder of the season. 2010 will be a very important year for his career &#8212; it&#8217;s make or break time for Liuzzi.</p>
<h3>15. Kamui Kobayashi</h3>
<p>Kamui Kobayashi was notable for being the one rookie who grabbed your attention. He had only two races, but he made a huge impression on the F1 world. He was ballsy and aggressive, and provided some hugely entertaining racing, particularly against Jenson Button! The downside to this was that he overstepped the line once or twice, particularly when he caused a crash with Nakajima in Brazil. I also doubt whether the driver that races for Sauber in 2010 will show the same hunger. In these two races, Kobayashi had nothing to lose and so took the necessary risks. In 2010 it might all be very different.</p>
<h3>14. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>At the beginning of the season, Giancarlo Fisichella continued in the trajectory his career has generally taken &#8212; downwards. The season began ignominiously when he missed his pit box in Australia. There were even rumours that Force India were less than impressed, and were looking to replace him. Then came the rumours that Ferrari were looking to Fisichella as the replacement for the struggling Luca Badoer. Bang on cue, Fisichella put in one of the drives of his life. With his Force India car on song at Spa, he really should have won the race were it not for the kers of the Ferrari car he was about to step into. Once he&#8217;d secured his dream drive for Ferrari, it was back to business as usual as he lurched from disappointment to deeper disappointment.</p>
<h3>13. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>Robert Kubica was unable to shine this year in the difficult BMW car. Matters were not helped by his height, which was a major disadvantage when BMW tried to run with kers. He took a while to score his first points of the season, and was behind his team mate in the Drivers&#8217; Championship all year. The main consolation was a superb second place finish in Brazil. I hope that Renault can produce a good car for him next year &#8212; he deserves a better chance than this.</p>
<h3>12. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>It was a difficult year for Nick Heidfeld. The BMW car was a massive disappointment and it must have been quite a demoralising season for Nick Heidfeld. Nevertheless, he managed to grab a handful of points, including a second place in the curtailed Malaysian race. He also did a better job at scoring points than Robert Kubica. I deeply hope Heidfeld gets a drive for next season.</p>
<h3>11. Jarno Trulli</h3>
<p>For a long time, I have disliked Jarno Trulli. However, grudgingly, I have to admit that he did a fairly good job in 2009, despite the Toyota team&#8217;s best efforts to throw it all away. Two third place finishes near the start of the season reflected the performance of the car. But his second place in Japan was truly impressive.</p>

<p>The BBC&#8217;s lead commentator Jonathan Legard has come in for a lot of stick on the internet. In my view, most of it is wholly unwarranted. Indeed, I am quite confused at the negative reaction he has been getting. I used to listen to him from time to time when he was on Radio 5 Live, and I was a fan of him then. In my view, it took years for the station&#8217;s Formula 1 coverage to recover from his departure. He has a good voice and is clearly passionate and highly knowledgable about F1. I like his tone and his sense of humour.</p>
<p>Most importantly of all for his job is that he almost never makes mistakes. The internet collapsed in a heap of laughter when he committed the heinous crime of mistaking a replay for live action during the Malaysian Grand Prix. Name me a commentator who has never done that? There was even a mitigating factor then, as FOM&#8217;s replay graphic was playing up during the race. Apart from that, I can&#8217;t think of any time when he has made a bad mistake, misidentified a driver (except for the odd mixed-up Red Bull for a Toro Rosso &#8212; we&#8217;ve all been there) or misread a situation. He has had a couple of bad race starts, but once the race settles in he is fine.</p>
<p>In contrast, Brundle has made a few errors this season, including a mega clanger when he spent half the race in Spain confusing the prime and option tyres, which actively ruined viewers&#8217; understanding of the race. During qualifying at the British Grand Prix he spent an entire lap talking about Räikkönen even though we were watching Massa, a fact backed up by a FOM caption. He made a few mistakes during the German GP as well.</p>
<p>Some criticise Legard&#8217;s reliance on crutch phrases, which I would agree is one jarring thing about his commentary. But let us face it, at times Murray Walker may as well have had a drawstring coming out of his back, and everyone found that endearing. Why it should be different for Legard I don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p>It is true that the chemistry between him and Martin Brundle has not been very good, but that was inevitably going to take time to build up, no matter who Brundle was commentating with. Legard has a good conversational style which I like. It is a potentially great way to cover duller moments of the race without resorting to James Allen&#8217;s trick, &quot;let&#8217;s listen to the engine [while I think of something to say]&quot;.</p>
<p>Unfortunately Brundle doesn&#8217;t seem to know how to deal with Legard&#8217;s conversational style. He seems not to know how to respond to Legard, often choosing not to respond at all.</p>
<p>A typical example of this happened during the German Grand Prix, when Brundle responded unneccessarily sarcastically towards Legard&#8217;s inquisitiveness over Brundle&#8217;s statement that it would be a shame to for refuelling to be banned. It was almost as though he felt threatened that his viewpoint was being questioned. Speaking personally, I disagree with Brundle&#8217;s point of view (strategy plays a role, but if you allow it to dominate is just replaces racing with mathematics), and the rude way he expressed it totally alienated me.</p>
<p>Sometimes listening to Brundle you think he deliberately sets out for a scrap. Maybe it is his way of spicing it up by playing devil&#8217;s advocate. But I get the feeling that being combative is the only way he knows how to operate. He did, after all, make his name by constantly correcting Murray Walker, and later James Allen. He never stops &quot;correcting&quot; people. You almost get the sense that, given the chance, he would &quot;correct&quot; Michael Schumacher on the subject of being a seven times World Champion.</p>
<p>It probably doesn&#8217;t help that he is now working with a commentator who <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> constantly need to be corrected, which means he now has to adapt his style to that of a colour commentator rather than encroaching on the main commentator&#8217;s role as he has always done before. This is new territory for Brundle, and I don&#8217;t think he is coping well.</p>
<p>Some people suggest that you could solve this problem by making Martin Brundle the main commentator. It might be worth experimenting with, but I can easily see Brundle&#8217;s ego soon dominating the entire show if he was to be given that role.</p>
<p>I have to admit that sometimes I wonder now if I would miss Martin Brundle. I spent most of last year listening to Radio 5 Live, sans-Brundle, and it didn&#8217;t affect my enjoyment of the races. Given that he is almost certainly the most expensive person on BBC F1 team, I wonder if it is not time for him to be given another role, because for me he is probably the least value for money.</p>
<p>He does have a good turn of phrase, and is an engaging talker on F1, so I wouldn&#8217;t like to see him go for good. Perhaps he could be given a smaller role such as that of post-race analyst. The colour commentator role can go to someone with more recent experience of an F1 car such as Anthony Davidson, because Brundle increasingly seems at a loss to explain some of the technical elements of team radio conversations.</p>
<p>And can someone explain to me why Brundle hasn&#8217;t been taken aside and politely asked to pronounce Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s name correctly? He must be the only person in the world who appears to mistake this ace F1 driver for some kind of telecommunications company, or a brand of bottle watter. Vett-tel? It&#8217;s &#8216;fettle&#8217;. Really, <em>really</em> annoying.</p>

<h3>20. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Last year he asked us to wait to judge him, and see how he performs on slick tyres. They were supposed to suit them better. But there is no real perceptible improvement in his performance. In fact, he may even be worse than last season. Bottom of the pile for me.</p>
<h3>19. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>This is his third full season in Formula 1 and we still haven&#8217;t seen what the hype was about. Sutil has not really come close to repeating the few flashes of promise we have seen during his career. The one moment was during the Malaysian Grand Prix when he was running as high as 6th &#8212; before spinning off (admittedly in treacherous conditions). After three years, I think we should have seen a bit more by now.</p>
<h3>18. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>The disappointment of the season. He spent much of 2008 within touching distance of his fancied team-mate Nico Rosberg in the Drivers&#8217; Championship. You might have expected him to improve this year. Instead, we are seeing a more lacklustre Nakajima who has failed to score a point. Indeed, he is yet even to finish in the top 10 all year.</p>
<p>One of the real head-scratchers of Nakajima&#8217;s season include successfully completing 77 laps at Monaco, only to crash on the final one. A chink of light was in sight when he qualified 5th at Silverstone, only to drop like a stone through the field during the race, eventually finishing 11th (which is still his best of the season).</p>
<h3>17. Nelsinho Piquet</h3>
<p>Nelsinho Piquet&#8217;s season is unfolding in much the same way as last year did &#8212; a bit lacklustre in general, but with a couple of half-decent results here and there. This year&#8217;s Renault does appear to be a bit of a shed, but he has once again been comprehensively beaten by his team mate.</p>
<p>But given that Alonso is, in my view, the best driver since Schumacher, it&#8217;s an unfair comparison. Maybe it&#8217;s better to note that Piquet has indeed beaten Alonso once (albeit in Britain, where Alonso was chronically held up by an ailing Heidfeld). But Piquet has more to do if he wants to remain in F1 for a third year.</p>
<h3>16. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>We should be careful when judging Buemi just now. He is the only rookie in the field. And we have seen some stunning rookie performances in recent years &#8212; Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica. So in that sense, at the moment Buemi looks a bit more plain than he may turn out to be in the long run.</p>
<p>In fact, I would say that it is a good thing that Buemi&#8217;s season so far has consisted of anonymity rather than idiocy (although crashing into Piquet in Monaco can be filed under &#8216;idiocy&#8217;). Plus, he has collected a few points, though we should bear in mind that he inherited two of them in Australia thanks to the joined-up brain-fade of two drivers in front of him. One slightly worrying thing is that he seems to have become worse as the season has progressed, but that may be a blip.</p>
<h3>15. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>Kovalainen races this season in difficult circumstances. His car is among the worst on the grid, and to add insult to injury his team-mate is a well-hyped World Champion. Even taking this into account though, Kovalainen&#8217;s performances have, in general, failed to meet expectations.</p>
<p>He started the season off with a first-lap crash in Australia, then unaccountably spun off on lap one in Malaysia. At the other end of this half of the season, he has been involved in a silly scrap with Sébastien Bourdais in Britain, and an unforced spin into the barriers at Monaco. A relatively good performance in China hasn&#8217;t made up for the rest of his poor season.</p>
<h3>14. Timo Glock</h3>
<p>Glock is another driver whose season began well, but has rapidly faded away towards the mid-point of the season. Unquestionably, his Toyota car has lost any advantage it had at the start of the season. But his team mate Jarno Trulli continues to make the most of the situation, and Glock&#8217;s season has been oddly anonymous.</p>
<p>He can be relied on to collect a steady haul of points when the car is up to it, but signs of his talent are reticent in revealing themselves. A super performance in treacherous conditions in Malaysia is the only notable moment of his season that I can think of.</p>
<h3>13. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>Nick Heidfeld&#8217;s season has been greatly constrained by his poor equipment. On the plus side, he has scored more points than Kubica, mostly thanks to a haul gained at the shortened Malaysian Grand Prix. He finished 2nd there but if the race ran to full distance he certainly wouldn&#8217;t have been that high up. Indeed, he was lucky to even be there after what was, in truth, a flaky performance.</p>
<p>At least this year, unlike last year, he is beating Robert Kubica. But the design of the car does not disadvantage him as much as it does Kubica.</p>
<h3>12. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>How the mighty have fallen. From challenging for the Championship in 2008, today Robert Kubica languishes at the arse end of the table, having just scored his first points in Turkey. To add insult to injury, he has already used up six of his allocated eight engines. In fairness, most of it isn&#8217;t his fault. By all accounts, his BMW car is awful, and it&#8217;s not helped by the fact that it was designed around a kers that was always going to disadvantage a driver of his size.</p>
<p>My overriding memory of Kubica&#8217;s racing this season has been his fight with Vettel at the front in Australia. That was back when the future still seemed bright. Mario Theissen said he would have won if he didn&#8217;t get tangled up with Sebastian Vettel. There was good and bad in that performance from Kubica, which maybe says it all about his season.</p>
<h3>11. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>I am not the greatest fan of Giancarlo Fisichella. Indeed, if I was in charge at Force India, I wouldn&#8217;t have given him a race seat. He started the year badly too, after embarrassingly missing his pit box in Australia, an incident that is said to have tried the patience of his team to the limit.</p>
<p>Aside from incidents like this though, you sense that Fisichella is squeezing the maximum out of the Force India car this year. Given that this is a team on the up, that could mean he will be scoring points soon. He has come close twice already this season (unlike Sutil), with commendable performances in both Monaco and Britain.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For a long time, Kimi Räikkönen has been the subject of much innuendo. He is often criticised for his known partiality to a tipple and condemned for being apparently disinterested. A few races ago BBC pundit David Coulthard described his former team mate as &#8220;the laziest driver you ever saw&#8221;.</p>
<p>After the Malaysian Grand Prix, regular commenter <a href="http://www.sparetomato.com/">Andy</a> <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/04/07/the-state-of-play-after-sepang/comment-page-1/#comment-3698">asked</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>How is Kimi viewed by the Tifosi? His apparent indifference at driving for Ferrari (and sometimes in F1) annoys even me (and I am not a Ferrari fan). We know the guy is quick, and can produce some stunning drives, but sometimes he just looks like he can’t be bothered if he’s not winning. We laughed at Massa’s ability in the Silverstone rain a couple of years ago, but at least the guy was trying to push, and has eventually come out as a more respected driver.</p></blockquote>
<p>I have long been curious of the Tifosi&#8217;s attitude towards Kimi Räikkönen. Back in 2007, Räikkönen&#8217;s first year at Ferrari, Keith at F1 Fanatic ran a story about how the <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2007/09/16/tifosi-not-warming-to-raikkonen/">Tifosi appeared not to be warming</a> towards the Finn.</p>
<p>Keith had attended the Italian Grand Prix and noticed that the fans&#8217; affections were largely saved for Felipe Massa. Meanwhile, the famous Italian sports newspaper <i>La Gazzetta dello Sport</i> was lukewarm about Räikkönen&#8217;s efforts. The attitude stands in stark contrast to the view that I would assume most non-Ferrari fans seem to hold &#8212; that it is Felipe Massa whose driving skills are rather variable while Räikkönen is a proven winner.</p>
<p>The Tifosi don&#8217;t always take well to Ferrari drivers at first. I read in James Allen&#8217;s book, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316509?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316509">The Edge of Greatness</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316509" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></i>, that Michael Schumacher didn&#8217;t quite capture the imagination of the Tifosi straight off the bat. But once Schumacher got a grasp of quite what the history and heritage of the Ferrari brand means to so many fans, he quickly became an excellent ambassador for the team and the rest is history.</p>
<p>I could well imagine that Schumacher&#8217;s apparent aloofness may have rubbed some people up the wrong way. But I wondered quite what it was that turned the Tifosi off about Kimi Räikkönen. Was it the fact that he was a former McLaren driver? Not likely &#8212; plenty of Ferrari drivers also raced for McLaren, notably Alain Prost. Maybe it was his reluctance to learn Italian, or his nonchalant demeanour.</p>
<p>Stories about the Tifosi&#8217;s apparent indifference towards their new driver unsurprisingly took a back seat immediately after Räikkönen won the World Drivers Championship in 2007. But over the past year or so they have gone into overdrive, and now most onlookers openly question the driver&#8217;s commitment to the sport.</p>
<p>Even the team itself sometimes appears to have little patience with their expensive big-name star. And every so often rumours that he will be replaced by Fernando Alonso resurface. We&#8217;ve heard those rumours before of course. We were told that Alonso was headed towards Ferrari for 2009 &#8212; then Räikkönen signed a contract extension until 2010.</p>
<p>Today <a href="http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/05/23/alonso-starts-talking-about-ferrari/">James Allen wrote on his blog</a> about the fresh rumours. Alonso is becoming a bit more effusive about Ferrari and Italian culture. He has also moved to the Swiss / Italian border &#8212; handy if you want to work with Ferrari.</p>
<p>Rumours that Alonso is arriving at Maranello now go hand-in-hand with the question marks over Räikkönen&#8217;s role at Ferrari. It used to be assumed that Alonso moving to Ferrari would be unworkable because he would replace Massa, and having two high-calibre drivers at a top team would not work. On the back of a seriously impressive 2008 campaign though, it doesn&#8217;t look like Massa will be the one who has to walk the plank.</p>
<p>Says James Allen:</p>
<blockquote><p>The word I’m hearing is that these next few races are pretty important for Kimi Raikkonen. Although he has a contract for 2010, the suggestion is that he has certain criteria to meet and that an agreement, which is in place with Alonso for 2011, has a clause which could bring it forward to 2010. The next couple of months will be decisive.</p>
<p>One GP driver I spoke to recently said that in the briefings and at moments when the drivers are all together, Kimi seems like he doesn’t care any more. It’s as if he’s going through the motions. It’s a shame if this is true, as Raikkonen is one of the most exciting and most talented drivers in F1.</p></blockquote>
<p>That sort of thing is what we hear about Räikkönen all the time &#8212; that he is lazy, can&#8217;t be bothered and no longer cares. The implication, though, is that this is now even <em>more</em> the case.</p>
<p>Kimi Räikkönen&#8217;s qualifying session in Monaco today goes a fair way to dispel that notion in my view. Ferrari have not looked close to getting pole position all season, but it was only a scarcely-believable lap by the ever-improving Jenson Button in the vastly superior Brawn that prevented the Finn from grabbing pole today.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Felipe Massa, who took pole last year, looked a bit lost during qualifying. He spun in a low-pressure situation during Q1, damaging his car. Massa only qualified 5th on a very similar fuel load to Räikkönen.</p>
<p>Could this be Räikkönen&#8217;s resurgence? He badly needs it, and although his performance today is a good sign there were also a few false dawns last season.</p>
<p>It could be, though, that Räikkönen&#8217;s reputation is irreparably damaged. Here is one sign that he simply does not have the respect of the Tifosi. This is a video which <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/05/kimi-goes-to-schumi-school.html">I saw over at Axis of Oversteer</a>. It is an advert for a Ferrari branded mobile phone.</p>

<p>Schumacher is depicted as the flawless ambassador. Räikkönen is depicted as a slow, unintelligent dork. And this is an advert aimed at Ferrari fans!</p>
