			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There have been four grands prix in 2011 so far, and they have been widely hailed as a great success. There is no doubt that the races have been action-packed, with something always going on.</p>
<p>But I wasn&#8217;t feeling it quite as much as many others were. I thought the Chinese Grand Prix was okay. But the reaction of others left me perplexed. All kinds of platitudes were bandied about. &#8220;The best dry race in decades!&#8221; &#8220;The best since Japan 2005!&#8221; Really? I wasn&#8217;t feeling that <em>at all</em>.</p>
<p>But I couldn&#8217;t quite put my finger on what was leaving me cold about F1 in 2011. There have been a lot of changes for this season, which has led to a very different style of racing. <strong>But what was it about the new F1 that was leaving me less thrilled than others?</strong></p>
<p>It took me some time to work it out. But once I hit on it, the worse it seemed &#8212; and it has left me feeling a bit pessimistic about the prospects for truly good racing in 2011.</p>
<h3>A pain in DRS?</h3>
<p>A lot of attention has been focused on the brand new drag reduction system. Results of the DRS have been patchy.</p>
<p>At some races &#8212; particularly Australia &#8212; the DRS has been just enough to allow a driver behind to catch up. At the opposite extreme, in Turkey it was obvious that the DRS zone was far too long, and drivers were making <strong>easy passes</strong> that were <strong>not pleasing to watch</strong>.</p>
<p>The core problem is that it gives one driver and advantage over another &#8212; a significant deviation from the purity of racing. <strong>Comparisons to turbo boosts in the 1980s are no good.</strong> It may be a button that drivers can press, but there the similarity ends.</p>
<p>Back then, all of the options were open to everyone. You could choose to have a turbo or not, and you could use it whenever you wanted. But to say <em>who</em> can use a device and <em>when</em> they can use it is not on.</p>
<p>To artificially give the trailing driver a speed advantage is taking us into Mario Kart territory. As a friend said to me, &#8220;It&#8217;s like they have allowed cheating&#8221;. It is <strong>fundamentally wrong</strong> and does not belong in any event that calls itself a sport.</p>
<p>I love the idea of moveable rear wings, but the implementation is all wrong. I don&#8217;t even understand why it can only be used in one part of the circuit. As Niki Lauda said, why is it the FIA&#8217;s job to say where drivers can pass each other?</p>
<p>Moreover, the hit and miss nature of the DRS zone is leading to different sorts of results in different races. The zones change size, and sometimes the FIA have got it wrong. They have even changed the position of the DRS activation point during a race weekend. What other word is there for this apart from &#8216;<strong>manipulation</strong>&#8216;?</p>
<p>This may be a device designed to <strong>&#8220;fix&#8221; the &#8220;problems&#8221;</strong> with overtaking. Instead, we have come one step away from <strong>fixing the results</strong>.</p>
<h3>F1 has sold its rubber soul</h3>
<p>But I am more concerned about the situation with the new <strong>Pirelli tyres</strong>. While the DRS is widely criticised, people have been much kinder about the tyre situation. Indeed, one of the more popular refrains this year has been &#8220;thank you Pirelli&#8221;. But <strong>I am in no mood to thank them</strong>.</p>
<p>They are designed to degrade artificially quickly. This is a significant deviation from the concept of F1. Formula 1 is now no longer about the best drivers in the best cars. It&#8217;s about <strong>the best drivers in the best cars &#8212; with the worst tyres</strong>.</p>
<p>While technical regulations have always restricted cars (it is the &#8220;formula&#8221; in Formula 1, after all), the tradition has always been to maximise the performance to create the fastest car possible that adheres to the formula of the day. That is what brings us radical ideas like the double diffuser and the F-duct, that many F1 fans love to talk about.</p>
<p>With the tyres, Pirelli have <em>deliberately</em> made them perform badly. Come on, <strong>this is supposed to be elite motorsport</strong>.</p>
<p>Moreover, these dodgy tyres have now become the central issue of a grand prix weekend. I have long bemoaned the dominance of tyres in F1. If a car has better aerodynamics, you can see it. If an engine is faster, you can hear it. But the tyres? They are just black boxes that sit in the four corners.</p>
<p>But there is no getting away from it &#8212; tyres are hugely important to the performance of a car. What I don&#8217;t understand is why you would want to <em>accentuate</em> that.</p>
<p>Critics of F1 often complain that the drivers of the best cars always win. What these people misunderstand is that F1 is all about engineering excellence, just as much as it is about great driving.</p>
<p>But now we have now reached a stage where the <strong>deciding factor is <em>neither</em> the driver <em>nor</em> the car</strong>. It is now all about strategy &#8212; driven by deliberately dodgy tyres &#8212; above all else.</p>
<p>They are now so important that the situation is now threatening to make qualifying a complete non-event. After all those years spent tweaking the format of qualifying in the name of &#8220;the show&#8221;, you have to laugh when further changes totally break a format they finally got right.</p>
<p>The reason? Because you need as many fresh sets of tyres as possible to last the whole race. This means less track action on Saturday, as teams are fearful of using too many sets of tyres. What is this, Formula 1 bean counting, or Formula 1 motor racing?</p>
<h3>Divergent strategies reduce real racing</h3>
<p>In addition to spearing Saturday action, it is my view that the tyres situation is making Sundays less exciting too.</p>
<p>Take the experience of <strong>Mark Webber</strong>. He climbed from 18th on the grid to finish 3rd in China. You&#8217;d think if anyone would be excited about the wheel-to-wheel action in 2011, it would be him. Not so much.</p>
<p>After the race <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13108927.stm">he told the BBC</a>, &#8220;Sometimes the overtaking moves aren&#8217;t that genuine because the guys really have nothing to fight back with. <strong>It&#8217;s more tactical now, and a bit less racing.</strong>&#8221; During the BBC&#8217;s broadcast from Turkey, Martin Brundle revealed that Webber had told him privately that he got no satisfaction out of the progress through the field in China. <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/05/did-the-drs-wing-make-things-too-artificial-in-turkey/">James Allen further hinted</a> at Webber&#8217;s distinct unhappiness at the situation.</p>
<p>Following Turkey, <strong>Jenson Button</strong> lay the blame for his poor result squarely on his strategy. Asked about what happens when his tyres go off, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13327233.stm">Button said</a>, &#8220;You&#8217;re not racing any more. You&#8217;re trying your best to get the best out of the car, but <strong>you&#8217;re not racing anyone around you because you are a sitting duck</strong>&#8230; They just come past you and you can&#8217;t do anything.&#8221;</p>
<p>Overtaking has looked like it&#8217;s too easy this year, and it is not just because of DRS. The situation with the tyres means that drivers are dealing with such radically different levels of grip that the <strong>slower driver does not even bother to defend</strong> any more.</p>
<p>Many celebrated <strong>Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s pass on Sebastian Vettel</strong> for the lead of the Chinese Grand Prix. But for me, it <strong>killed the race</strong> as soon as it happened. I was hoping for Vettel to be able to defend, but he simply couldn&#8217;t. As it was, <strong>the pass was inevitable</strong> for laps in advance.</p>
<p>In the laps between Hamilton&#8217;s pitstop and his pass on Vettel, the McLaren driver was an average of <strong>0.9s a lap faster</strong> than the Red Bull. (At one point he set a lap time <em>1.6 seconds</em> up on Vettel.) To put this into perspective, during Q1 in China, a 0.9s gap to the fastest driver would have earned <strong>18th on the grid</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Is it really exciting to watch a car that&#8217;s got an advantage of around one second a lap breeze on by?</strong> Not for me. This isn&#8217;t overtaking &#8212; it&#8217;s merely passing. It&#8217;s hardly Dijon 1979, is it? Today René Arnoux would flip his flap, press his boost button and head off into the distance on his superior tyres &#8212; race over.</p>
<p>The performance differences are huge, and it is all down to decisions that are made by computers far in advance. It is out of the driver&#8217;s hands. <strong>What is this, the Excel Grand Prix of Spreadsheet?</strong></p>
<p>It is right that strategy plays a part in a race. But this year the balance has been tipped way over the edge, to the point where the driver&#8217;s influence on the outcome of the race has been severely diminished. You almost may as well hold the grand prix on a computer where all of the strategies have been put in.</p>
<p>To open up strategy options for this season without resorting to crap tyres that create crap pseudo-racing, they could simply have ditched the rule whereby drivers are forced to run on both compounds. This would have opened up the possibilities of running a 0, 1 or 2 stop strategy.</p>
<p>Instead, we are now seeing record-breaking levels of pitstops &#8212; upwards of 80 pitstops a race &#8212; for no good reason. This has <strong>taken away the emphasis from the on-track action</strong>, and has made huge amounts of the &#8220;racing&#8221; totally irrelevant.</p>
<h3>It wasn&#8217;t broke, so why &#8220;fix&#8221; it?</h3>
<p>The most disturbing thing about all the changes this season is the fact that there was <strong>very little wrong with Formula 1 in the first place</strong>. I didn&#8217;t complain that Formula 1 is dull. And while there was room for improvement, I have long bemoned the gimmicky thinking that has come about through efforts to &#8220;improve the show&#8221;. Now it is in danger of jumping the shark.</p>
<p>I love Formula 1 motor racing. I have done since the mid-1990s. There were lots of other people who claimed they also loved F1 &#8212; but at the same time complained about &#8220;processional races&#8221;. <strong>They said that F1 was too dull. Yet, for some reason, they still watched it anyway, and demanded changes.</strong> Huh?</p>
<p>I feel like the sport I love has been <strong>hijacked</strong>.</p>
<p>I also believe that the criticisms of the new format have been misunderstood by some insiders. It is not &#8220;too much overtaking&#8221; or &#8220;too much of a good thing&#8221;.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/04/f1-racing-2011-style-can-you-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing/">James Allen said</a>, &#8220;it’s a bit like going into a sweet shop and eating half the stock, when you’ve only been used to getting a packet of Polos at best.&#8221; That&#8217;s not how I feel. It&#8217;s actually more like going into a nice restaurant expecting a good meal and being served a Big Mac instead.</p>
<h3>Time to end the fixation with &#8220;the show&#8221;</h3>
<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong. I am still deriving satisfaction from Formula 1 this season. But the wheel-to-wheel action has become a lot more insipid this year, and bland passing has become so prevalent that <strong>overtaking has become devalued</strong>.</p>
<p>Kers is great for Formula 1. But the tyres situation, combined with DRS, is threatening to spoil the party. It wasn&#8217;t broke, but they fixed it anyway. But in <strong>&#8220;fixing&#8221; the racing</strong>, we have come just one step away from <strong>fixed races</strong>. The positioning of the DRS zone, determined by an FIA mandarin, could potentially make the difference between who wins and who loses.</p>
<p>Somewhere along the line, F1 has become so fixated on &#8220;the show&#8221; that it has <strong>forgotten about the race</strong>. There are now too many gimmicks and complications that deviate from the core concept that has served motorsport well for over a century: <strong>put a bunch of cars on a track and discover which is the fastest</strong>.</p>
<p>Of course, motorsport must always seek to entertain the audience. It wouldn&#8217;t exist otherwise. But you also need to remember why fans of motorsport tune in. Clue: it&#8217;s because they want to see a motor race. There are plenty of other places where you can be entertained by contrived or fictitious means.</p>
<p>But sport is supposed to be based on merit. <strong>It needs to be real.</strong></p>
<p>When <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91298">Renault&#8217;s James Allison said</a> &#8220;We are an <strong>entertainment business</strong>,&#8221; it showed how wrong this whole approach is. We are dangerously striding towards WWE territory. If James Allison wants to work in an entertainment business, he can <strong>go to work in Hollywood</strong>. I want to watch a race.</p>
<p>The toxic focus on &#8220;the show&#8221; needs to stop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ll be upfront here. While many like Williams, with their &#8220;plucky underdog&#8221; status and stridently independent approach, they have never been my among my favourite teams. To the extent that I have ever liked them, it has been as the anti-Ferrari. In other words, I like them about as much as I like McLaren, which is not very much &#8212; but hey, at least they can beat Ferrari.</p>
<p>Today, Williams can&#8217;t beat Ferrari, so I am rather indifferent about them. But at a time where the majority of the grid is made up of manufacturers &#8212; of cars and drinks &#8212; even I can see that there is something romantic about Williams. I think it would be good to see them at the front again.</p>
<p>But if I was a fan of the team, I would probably have well and truly lost patience by now. Every year the team says, &#8220;just wait &#8212; next year we&#8217;ll be back&#8221;. They spend all winter making positive noises. And then when it comes to the big day itself? They are even slower than they were before.</p>
<h3>One of the most successful teams in history</h3>
<p>When they last won a Constructors&#8217; Championship in 1997, Williams had won more of them than Ferrari. The record was staggering &#8212; nine Constructors&#8217; and seven Drivers&#8217; Championships in just 20 seasons. It was an utterly fearsome record.</p>
<p>At that stage, Williams had won races in all but two of its seasons &#8212; its very first in 1978, and a brief drought in 1988 when the team had to make do with inferior Judd engines after Honda jumped ship to McLaren. Even then, Nigel Mansell managed to wring a couple of second place finishes out of it, which is more than can be said for what came after 1997.</p>
<p>Once again, Williams was left in the lurch after the departure of the front-running engine manufacturer &#8212; this time Renault. To make matters worse, chief designer Adrian Newey left Williams to join McLaren. 1998 was a year of continuity for Williams, in all the wrong ways &#8212; using what were effectively year-old Renault engines and what some said was the 1997 chassis adapted for 1998 regulations.</p>
<p>In 1999 the team faced further difficulties with Alex Zanardi struggling to adapt to F1 after a successful time in ChampCars. While the wins dried up, this difficult spell was thankfully short lived, as in 2000 Williams forged a new partnership with BMW.</p>
<p>2000 was a learning year for all concerned, but successes came between 2001 and 2003, when Williams returned to winning ways. Williams were even strong title contenders in 2003, with four victories and nine podiums, Williams were a strong player in a tight three-way battle for the championship. As unlikely as it seems today, Juan Pablo Montoya was almost a World Champion!</p>
<h3>The slide from the top</h3>
<p>Unfortunately, things started to go pear-shaped again in 2004. A radical &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; concept brought little in the way of performance, and a more conventional design was brought out midway through the season. Montoya managed to win the final race in Brazil, but this race remains the team&#8217;s last taste of success.</p>
<p>Almost every year since then has seemingly seen Williams slip back a bit further, with the successes of the old days becoming an ever more distant memory. In the past five years, the team has had just four podium finishes. (Barring success in Turkey, that number will reduce to three this weekend!)</p>
<p>The brightest spot has been 2007, when a consistent set of results from Nico Rosberg helped the team bag a commendable fourth place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship (although that was after McLaren&#8217;s disqualification from the Championship). Apart from that, Williams have become a fixture at the back of the midfield &#8212; if you can call 8th out of 10 teams the &#8220;midfield&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Arrogant enough to believe their own excuses</h3>
<p>All the while, the excuses came, and fans were reassured: &#8220;next year is our year&#8221;. And next year comes and everything is all the same. Even if they trick people into thinking they&#8217;re fast by topping Friday Practice times, as Williams did in the first half of last season, people soon become wise to the fact that the car is not truly capable of it.</p>
<p>Before, there was always a positive spin to put on the situation. In 2009, Williams were bad &#8212; but at least Renault were worse and BMW weren&#8217;t much better. In 2008 people were more concerned with the alarming lack of pace in the Honda. 2006 was regarded as a tough deal for Williams, struggling with apparently sluggish and unreliable Cosworth engines.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s difficult to sugar-coat this year&#8217;s results in the same way. Although seventh doesn&#8217;t sound too bad, in effect the only teams that are behind them are either new (in the case of Virgin, Hispania and Lotus), facing hugely difficult political and financial constraints (Sauber) or have designed their own car for the first time (Toro Rosso). The shocker is that Williams are even being compared to teams like this.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Force India look a great deal more convincing, and Renault have again leapfrogged Williams and look like potential challengers to the top four teams. Indeed, Toro Rosso even look like they can realistically challenge Williams on the racetrack, particularly with a couple of feisty young drivers who are stepping up to the plate in style, particularly in the case of Jaime Alguersuari. Meanwhile, in China Nico Hülkenberg finished behind the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen.</p>
<p>It seems as though Williams allowed arrogance to get the better of them. It was always someone else&#8217;s fault. But increasingly, Williams have been made to eat humble pie.</p>
<p>Williams lay the blame for their early-2000s dip at the door of BMW. This ended in an acrimonious split in 2005, by which time each party had become convinced that the other side was not pulling its weight. But BMW did a pretty good job when they joined forces with Sauber, the disappointment of 2009 notwithstanding. Meanwhile, Williams became inert &#8212; a permanent fixture of the midfield.</p>
<p>Of course, if it wasn&#8217;t the engine&#8217;s fault, it was the drivers&#8217; fault. I was very interested to see <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=48469">Frank Williams admitting</a> that, in the light of Mark Webber&#8217;s recent successes, the team was too hasty to lay the blame at the door of its driver for their average spell in 2005 and 2006.</p>
<blockquote><p>When we had him obviously our car was a disappointment and we felt he was part of the problem. He probably wasn&#8217;t actually, with hindsight. The major point was that the car had problems.</p></blockquote>
<h3>Is there a way back?</h3>
<p>I think the Williams of today is a great deal less arrogant than the Williams of four or five years ago. But now the damage has been done. Is there a way back to the top for this proud team? 13 years on from its last Championship success, it&#8217;s difficult to see.</p>
<p>Already, there are rumours that Williams are unhappy with Cosworth (just like in 2006). Rumours are linking them to a partnership with Renault. Williams were linked to Renault last year too, and Frank Williams confessed that the prospect of &#8220;Williams Renault&#8221;, a reminder of the team&#8217;s most dominant period in the 1990s, was exciting.</p>
<p>Other rumours link Williams to a partnership with Porsche, with whom they have collaborated on kers. But the problems run deeper than the matter of their engine supply, as surely the lessons of the BMW split show.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766039045/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2494/3766039045_b53c1786ec.jpg" width="361" height="*" alt="Two proud championships" class="picture" /></a>Despite all of its history and past successes, Williams have tried and failed to recover for too long now. Sadly, it seems as though this year Williams have to make do with racing against the likes of Sauber, a zombie team that is on emergency life support, and Lotus, a team that didn&#8217;t even exist a few months ago.</p>
<p>I hope they can make it. I was privileged enough to be invited to the <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/10/my-trip-to-the-williams-f1-factory/">Williams factory and museum</a> last year. The museum is a wonderful place, brimful of some of the most successful grand prix cars there have ever been. The team only goes back just over 30 years, but it is such a huge part of Formula 1&#8242;s history. It would be such a shame if Williams were stuck at the back of the grid forever.</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t think there is much need to justify why I have placed Piquet at the bottom of the list. Suffice it to say that I hope he never races competitively again.</p>
<h3>24. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Sébastien Bourdais spent the 2008 season explaining that we should wait to judge him until the return of slicks in 2009. Slicks came in 2009. He has been duly judged.</p>
<h3>23. Romain Grosjean</h3>
<p>I feel a little bit sorry for Romain Grosjean. He was thrown into as difficult a situation as it is possible to imagine. Having done no testing whatsoever, he became Renault&#8217;s second driver just in time for a massive scandal involving Renault&#8217;s previous second driver to envelop the team. He didn&#8217;t perform very well, but they were exceptionally difficult circumstances in my view.</p>
<h3>22. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>I thought Nakajima did a good job in 2008, but 2009 was a huge disappointment. His main achievement of the season was to qualify an admittedly impressive 5th place for the British Grand Prix. However, his race was poor and he finished 11th. Way to hoof it over the bar.</p>
<h3>21. Jaime Alguersuari</h3>
<p>As with the other drivers who were expected to hit the ground running mid-season, Alguersuari was disadvantaged by the fact that he had done no testing. It may also be said that he was brought into F1 too quickly by the impatient Red Bull driver development juggernaut. While he was British F3 Champion of 2008, he was having a moderate season in World Series by Renault and may have befitted from some extra time to develop his skills away from the intense spotlight of F1. As a result, Alguersuari spent a lot of his time crashing or being rather unspectacular.</p>
<h3>20. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>I do wish Adrian Sutil could show us something &#8212; anything &#8212; that would once and for all conclude that he fully deserves a place in F1. He does show flashes of potential, but contrives to throw his chances away. He could have had a decent points finish in China if he had been more careful in the worsening weather conditions. And he has gained a reputation for being involved in a lot of needless crashes. His crash with Nick Heidfeld in Singapore following a needless spin was particularly unnecessary. This was made all the worse by the fact that he pulled off a frighteningly similar manoeuvre in Japan at the following race. His performance in Belgium looked poor in comparison with his team mate who battled for the win all race long. The main saving grace was a fourth place in Italy.</p>
<h3>19. Luca Badoer</h3>
<p>Yes, Luca Badoer was massively disappointing as the substitute for Felipe Massa at Ferrari. However, as I have written before, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">he had a harder job than anyone else</a> on the grid, being expected to become instantly competitive after 10 years away from racing. Given the circumstances, I think Luca Badoer performed quite admirably. It is not as though Fisichella could do much more in that Ferrari &#8212; and he didn&#8217;t have the excuse of being out of practice for a decade.</p>
<h3>18. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>I think Buemi did a decent job overall in 2009, although it&#8217;s difficult to remember any real stand-out moments. He should have another year in F1, but ought to show more in 2010 in order to justify his continued presence on the grid.</p>
<h3>17. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>2009 was another disappointing year for Heikki Kovalainen. The Finn was totally outclassed by his team mate all season long, and never looked like a driver who deserves to be driving for a team as good as McLaren. He seems competent enough, but clearly lacks the hunger and seems incapable of putting in a truly great performance.</p>
<h3>16. Vitantonio Liuzzi</h3>
<p>Liuzzi made his long-overdue return to the cockpit in a Force India this year. He did a great job at his first race back in Monza, but was slightly disappointing for the remainder of the season. 2010 will be a very important year for his career &#8212; it&#8217;s make or break time for Liuzzi.</p>
<h3>15. Kamui Kobayashi</h3>
<p>Kamui Kobayashi was notable for being the one rookie who grabbed your attention. He had only two races, but he made a huge impression on the F1 world. He was ballsy and aggressive, and provided some hugely entertaining racing, particularly against Jenson Button! The downside to this was that he overstepped the line once or twice, particularly when he caused a crash with Nakajima in Brazil. I also doubt whether the driver that races for Sauber in 2010 will show the same hunger. In these two races, Kobayashi had nothing to lose and so took the necessary risks. In 2010 it might all be very different.</p>
<h3>14. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>At the beginning of the season, Giancarlo Fisichella continued in the trajectory his career has generally taken &#8212; downwards. The season began ignominiously when he missed his pit box in Australia. There were even rumours that Force India were less than impressed, and were looking to replace him. Then came the rumours that Ferrari were looking to Fisichella as the replacement for the struggling Luca Badoer. Bang on cue, Fisichella put in one of the drives of his life. With his Force India car on song at Spa, he really should have won the race were it not for the kers of the Ferrari car he was about to step into. Once he&#8217;d secured his dream drive for Ferrari, it was back to business as usual as he lurched from disappointment to deeper disappointment.</p>
<h3>13. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>Robert Kubica was unable to shine this year in the difficult BMW car. Matters were not helped by his height, which was a major disadvantage when BMW tried to run with kers. He took a while to score his first points of the season, and was behind his team mate in the Drivers&#8217; Championship all year. The main consolation was a superb second place finish in Brazil. I hope that Renault can produce a good car for him next year &#8212; he deserves a better chance than this.</p>
<h3>12. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>It was a difficult year for Nick Heidfeld. The BMW car was a massive disappointment and it must have been quite a demoralising season for Nick Heidfeld. Nevertheless, he managed to grab a handful of points, including a second place in the curtailed Malaysian race. He also did a better job at scoring points than Robert Kubica. I deeply hope Heidfeld gets a drive for next season.</p>
<h3>11. Jarno Trulli</h3>
<p>For a long time, I have disliked Jarno Trulli. However, grudgingly, I have to admit that he did a fairly good job in 2009, despite the Toyota team&#8217;s best efforts to throw it all away. Two third place finishes near the start of the season reflected the performance of the car. But his second place in Japan was truly impressive.</p>

<p>My name is Duncan, and I am a motorsport fan. Is it a bad thing? Am I evil? Do I need to join Petrolheads Anonymous?</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s Formula 1 World Championship is coming to an end. The Drivers&#8217; and Constructors&#8217; Championships have been wrapped up by Jenson Button and Brawn-Mercedes respectively, and now we have one last race to enjoy before the sport takes a break for the winter.</p>
<p>This has not been an easy year to be an F1 fan. In terms of newsworthy stories, it&#8217;s the sport that keeps on giving. But even by F1&#8242;s standards, it has been an extraordinary year for scandals.</p>
<p>Bear in mind that in previous years Formula 1 has brought extraordinary enough stories. There was, for instance, the so-called &#8220;spying&#8221; scandal which led to the sport&#8217;s governing body, the FIA, handing the McLaren team a fine of <em>ONE HUNDRED MEELION DOLLARS</em>. Then there was the &#8220;German prisoner&#8221; sex scandal involving the FIA&#8217;s President Max Mosley.</p>
<p>This year cranked up the scandal ever-further. Even in the first race, a major scandal blew up when Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren team were caught lying to the race stewards.</p>
<p>It also emerged this year that the Renault team had colluded with its driver Nelsinho Piquet to deliberately crash his car to hand an advantage to his team mate Fernando Alonso in last year&#8217;s Singapore Grand Prix. This endangered the life of Piquet and of other drivers and spectators.</p>
<p>In the past year, two major manufacturers &#8212; Honda and BMW &#8212; have pulled out of the sport, with persistent rumours surrounding the commitment of the other manufacturers. Moreover, almost all of the teams threatened to break away from F1 to set up a rival championship, in protest at the way the sport is governed by Max Mosley and the FIA.</p>
<p>The governance of the sport may change this week, as Max Mosley is stepping down as FIA President. The election to replace him is taking place today, on Friday. This actually may have more widespread implications than many realise.</p>
<p>Even though during last year&#8217;s sex scandal Max Mosley was persistently described by the media as &#8220;F1 boss&#8221;, the job of FIA President goes much further than that. The FIA has significant sway over road safety issues and effectively represents car users on the world stage. If you are a member of the AA, the RAC or even the Camping and Caravanning Club, you are represented by the FIA.</p>
<p>Clearly, this year there has been a lot going on in the world of motorsport. While cynics point out that, for the sport&#8217;s commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone, any publicity is good publicity, this all served to further discredit a sport which isn&#8217;t exactly the most popular among some. Formula 1 is seen by many as a sport which is dangerous, environmentally unfriendly, the personification of greed &#8212; and perhaps even sexist.</p>
<p>No doubt there is an element of truth to some of these accusations. So, how does this sit with me? I am a massive fan of motorsport, but I have liberal political views and a concern for the environment. Do I lack principles? Is F1 a guilty pleasure for me?</p>
<p>I actually see no reason why it should be. Some motorsport fans are unapologetic about their passion, and they see no reason to dress it up as anything but an extravagant bit of fun. But I see motorsport as a positive force that has a lot to contribute to the world.</p>
<p>Yes, Formula 1 is dangerous. This year, one driver, Felipe Massa, had an horrific accident when he was struck on the head while travelling at 170mph by a spring as heavy as a bag of sugar which had fallen off another car and was bouncing around on the circuit. He was lucky to have suffered no long term damage. The spring destroyed his helmet, but if it had hit him at another point he could have lost his sight or even died.</p>
<p>Sadly, one Formula Two driver was not so lucky. Henry Surtees was killed when he was struck on the head by a tyre which was bouncing around on the circuit after it had detached from another car in another accident.</p>
<p>While a ticket to a grand prix states in large letters, &#8220;motor sport is dangerous&#8221;, such accidents are mercifully rare in top-line motorsport these days. Major injuries are rare, and the last fatality in Formula 1 was in 1994. Believe it or not, more than 2½ times as many people have died while competing in the Great North Run than have died in F1 since 1981, when the Great North Run began.</p>
<p>But this year&#8217;s events in motorsport show that complacency should never set in, which is why improvements in safety are always being pushed forward. Perhaps the real scandal though is that, despite the increasingly safe environment that professional racing drivers face, 1.3 million people still die on the world&#8217;s roads every year.</p>
<p>F1 technology can play a major role in reducing the number of accidents on public roads, and already has done. In 2007, one F1 driver, Robert Kubica, survived a 75<i>g</i> impact with nothing more than light concussion. The materials that make an F1 car so safe are exotic and expensive, meaning that the opportunities to help make road cars safer using F1 research are a bit limited.</p>
<p>But electronics such as ABS and traction control are commonplace on today&#8217;s road cars. Such technologies unquestionably save lives all the time, and their development was helped by early applications in racing cars.</p>
<p>The money that flows through F1, and the high-stakes nature of the competition, make it a great test bed for important technologies that improve our daily lives. F1 is an R&#038;D powerhouse.</p>
<p>There is currently an exhibition in the Science Museum in London called <a href="http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/visitmuseum/galleries/fast_forward.aspx">Fast Forward</a>, which showcases twenty instances of F1 technology <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7934857.stm">improving the lives of others</a>.</p>

<p>Included on display are high-tech tyre pressure indicators which alert drivers to a developing puncture before it becomes dangerous. Then there are F1 materials being used to help protect troops in Afghanistan from bullets and explosions. Slip-resistant boots based on F1 tyre technology for people who work in slippery environments, thereby reducing injuries in the workplace, are also on display.</p>
<p>A bit more down to earth is the gadget that can stop your central heating system from becoming clogged up with rust and sludge, thereby reducing energy consumption in the home. Hospitals have even analysed mechanics&#8217; behaviour and procedures during pitstops in order to improve the speed and accuracy of medical teams.</p>

<p>But how about the environmental impact of this gas-guzzling sport? I must say that my view is that rather too much is made of this. That is not to say that Formula 1 does not a significant environmental impact &#8212; it does. But emissions from the F1 cars themselves are actually a drop in the ocean. The racing itself does little environmental damage.</p>
<p>What is really damaging is all the travelling that teams, the media and fans must do in order to attend the races. The good news on this front is that <a href="http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2007/03/7272.ars">F1 is carbon neutral, and has been since 1997</a>. The FIA Foundation, the charity arm of the FIA, has taken into account not only emissions from the F1 cars and the travel of the teams, but also the transport of the fans that attend the races.</p>
<p>But any activity that involves being somewhere requires travel. F1 is a global sport, so there is a lot of global travel involved. But otherwise the sport actually seems rather restrained. In just 17-or-so races, a World Champion driver emerges.</p>
<p>Compare this to another competition, say the English Premier League in football. To come up with a mere national league-winning club, 380 football matches must be played, with all the travel this entails too. In comparison, F1 looks positively restrained.</p>
<p>Maybe that is an apples-and-oranges comparsion. It is just as well, then, that F1 technology also looks set to pave the way towards a green future. Formula 1 has the potential to help greatly reduce energy consumption. Refuelling during races will be banned from next year, shifting the balance more towards fuel consumption rather than raw power.</p>
<p>Another major initiative is the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regenerative_brake#Kinetic_Energy_Recovery_Systems">Kinetic Energy Recovery System</a>, or kers, which the FIA finally legalised for this season. Kers is a system which harvests the kinetic energy that is dissipated under braking and would otherwise be wasted, and re-deploys that energy into the powertrain.</p>
<p>This technology has had a rather troubled birth in F1. The systems have been too expensive for teams to develop in the current economic climate, and it looks as though kers may take a back seat for a few years. There is also scepticism over whether kers as it is applied in F1 is actually relevant to road cars.</p>
<p>But one team, Williams, is adamant that its flywheel system will find a large variety of applications in the real world. The team says that its energy recovery system could improve road cars, vehicles used in mining, rail systems and &#8220;anything that moves&#8221;.</p>

I was lucky enough to be <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/10/my-trip-to-the-williams-f1-factory/">invited along to the Williams F1 factory</a> earlier this year along with a number of other web journalists and bloggers. The excellent Brits on Pole website has fantastic coverage of the visit.)</p>
<p>Plans continue to gather pace on this front. On Wednesday, <a href="http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/FIA/2009/Documents/fia_env_sus_ms.pdf">the FIA outlined its plans for a green future of F1</a> (PDF). This includes a plan to make motorsport a competition based more on efficiency than raw power, and a stronger focus on energy recovery technologies.</p>
<p>The FIA also plans to introduce its own carbon neutral scheme, including offsetting its regulatory presence. It may also make carbon offsetting a condition of involvement in a championship.</p>
<p>So there you have it. Motorsport is a force for good in the world. Not bad for something that is hugely enjoyable. My halo is in tact.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>No-one can have failed to have spotted the irony. Giancarlo Fisichella has realised his childhood dream. Like any Italian driver, the opportunity to drive for Ferrari at all &#8212; never mind at Monza &#8212; is a real dream come true for Fisichella. But as with Luca Badoer, that dream has not quite gone to plan.</p>
<p>At least Badoer did not have a former team for him to compare. But Fisichella must have particularly mixed feelings as he struggles in his Ferrari while his former team Force India threatens to have the very fastest car in the pack.</p>
<p>A strong Force India showing at Monza was always on the cards. On the back of an excellent performance at Spa-Francorchamps, where Fisichella got pole position and finished 2nd, it was clear that Force India&#8217;s car was handy in a low downforce environment.</p>
<p>Force India were particularly bullish in the run-up to this race too. Knowing they may have had an advantage for Spa and Monza, Force India booked one of the few straight-line tests that are allowed per year for this week <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46780&#038;PO=46780">in order to maximise their advantage</a>. It also gave their new race driver, Vitantonio Liuzzi, a chance to familiarise himself with the car (albeit not on a racetrack).</p>
<p>Liuzzi will probably be driving the very same car that Fisichella excelled in at Spa. It is little surprise that he has hit the ground running, qualifying a solid 7th for his first race since 2007. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/03/vitantonio-liuzzi-the-forgotten-champion/">I have long felt that Liuzzi wasn&#8217;t given a proper chance</a> in F1, and it delights me to see that he may now get a prolonged spell at a stable team. There have been strong rumours for a while that Liuzzi had a 2010 race contract with Force India in the bag already.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Fisichella&#8217;s former team mate Adrian Sutil has his tail up, and appears to be adapting well to becoming Force India&#8217;s <i>de facto</i> team leader. He was probably fast enough to get pole position today but a mistake on his quick lap put paid to that notion. Nonetheless, Sutil must fancy his chances for a great result in the race, despite the fact that he is surrounded by kers-equipped cars on the grid.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Fisichella, having chosen to move to Ferrari, is struggling to adapt to his new car and qualified 14th on the grid. He must be scratching his head a bit over the fact that his old car is seven places in front, and his former team mate is a massive 12 places in front. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78566">Fisichella says he is far from unhappy</a>, and even takes pride from the fact that he helped develop that Force India to become a front-runner.</p>
<p>You certainly can&#8217;t blame him for deciding to move to Ferrari. Which would he prefer &#8212; a good result, or the chance to say he&#8217;s driven for Ferrari. He has three career wins already. Balancing the chance of getting a fourth victory in a Force India, or getting a moderate result for Ferrari, you can see even then why he might prefer the latter option.</p>
<p>What his performance so far this weekend shows you don&#8217;t have to have been out of racing for ten years to struggle to get to grips with the Ferrari F60. Yes, Badoer&#8217;s performances were not great, but <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/26/the-toughest-job-in-f1-being-luca-badoer/">I felt very sorry for him</a> being expected to perform straight away in a car that is said to be difficult to drive.</p>
<p>Giancarlo Fisichella&#8217;s performance has not been quite as bad as Badoer&#8217;s. But given that he is fully race-fresh and fit, you would expect that. Fisichella will probably have expected to do better than this. It has been a slightly lacklustre weekend. He was 20th in both Friday Practice 2 and Saturday Practice. On Saturday he further underlined his difficulties by crashing at the Parabolica. Indeed, I found myself <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/09/12/twitter-updates-for-2009-09-12/">wondering what oh-so-hilarious nicknames</a> the journalists might like to come up with now that a different Ferrari is struggling at the back.</p>
<p>Following Badoer&#8217;s struggles in Valencia, <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/ted-kravitz-the-european-gp-fr.html">Ted Kravitz revealed that the F60 may be a particularly tricky car to master</a>. The driver is required to do lots of hands-on switch-flicking and knob-twisting throughout the lap.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78495">This is also Fisichella&#8217;s explanation</a> for why switching to a Ferrari has not brought an immediate improvement in his pace as a driver.</p>
<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s a different car so there is different reaction going into the corners. You work much more with the steering wheel and the switches compared to Force India. With Force India I was just concentrating on the driving, here I am quite busy.</p></blockquote>
<p>As for his crash during Saturday Practice, that is said to be due to Fisichella adapting to the behaviour of the car under braking while it is harvesting its energy for kers. Kers was another worry that Fisichella did not have to deal with at Force India, but it is fundamental to the performance of the F60.</p>
<p>These insights about the Ferrari F60 remind me of the received wisdom about Ducati&#8217;s MotoGP bike. There are many parallels between Ferrari and Ducati, and this appears to be another one. The Ducati has long been famous for making previously-good riders look poor. Only Casey Stoner appears able to extract the full potential from it, while other Ducati riders tend to struggle to find any pace at all. The suggestion is that the Ducati is a very difficult bike to ride and that only Stoner has tamed it. Perhaps Felipe Massa had a similar magic with the Ferrari. (In yet another parallel, both Stoner and Massa are currently not racing in order to convalesce.)</p>
<p>The experience of watching drivers attempt to get to grips with a tricky car under the intense spotlight of a race weekend, rather than the relative privacy of a test session, has at least put a few myths to bed. Certainly, the idea that results are more down to the car than the driver was given a boost when Jenson Button seemed unable to stop winning at the beginning of this season. But it was dealt a blow when Luca Badoer stepped into the Ferrari, and finished last in Belgium when his team mate won.</p>
<p>Now we see Fisichella with his hands full and we are presented with a yet more complex picture. A driver needs to grow into his car. He needs to learn how to drive it and gain in confidence with it. It is also true that a car needs to suit a particular driver&#8217;s style. Arguably Badoer wasn&#8217;t given enough time to adapt, and Fisichella will need more leeway too. Here&#8217;s hoping the <i>tifosi</i> have patience with him if he is unable to score a good result during the race.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What a grand prix weekend that was. It just goes to show you what a decent circuit can do for racing. Boy, can Spa do it for racing. It also clearly does it for Kimi Räikkönen, who is always mesmerising in this most inspirational of settings.</p>
<p>Räikkönen confuses people a lot of the time with his apparent indifference. Often he simply does not seem to be bothered. But he <em>always</em> goes well at Spa. Indeed, he is the only current driver to have won there. His record includes a remarkable fight to the front from 10th on the grid in what was an otherwise barren 2004 season for him.</p>
<p>There are some parallels between that victory and this year&#8217;s one. Like McLaren in 2004, this year Ferrari began the season with uncompetitive machinery, but have developed the car into a winner for Belgium. This victory ends a 25 race drought for Räikkönen; the 2004 victory ended an even longer one.</p>
<p>In a lot of ways, Räikkönen&#8217;s victory was among the least surprising things to happen during an extraordinary weekend. The Finn usually gives a good performance in Belgium, but despite winning the race he was overshadowed by Giancarlo Fisichella, a man who would have been sacked at the end of last year if I had any say in such matters.</p>
<p>Question marks remain over a victory margin which perhaps ought to have been longer than one second. Then some say he wouldn&#8217;t have won were it not for kers &#8212; this is probably true. Others say that he gained an advantage by running wide and taking the run-off at La Source on lap 1.</p>
<p>However, David Coulthard says that Räikkönen will have gained no advantage from running wide, a fact which is apparently corroborated by the fact that Button took a similar line and lost places. It&#8217;s more likely that Räikkönen gained those spots by deploying his kers, the exit of La Source being the ideal spot to unleash that kers energy on lap 1 rather than the start itself. <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/08/it-was-ferrari-by-kers.html">See Axis of Oversteer for a good debate</a> on this matter.</p>
<p>Even so, the plaudits are going to Giancarlo Fisichella for his stunning drive to second place in the Force India. Is it a coincidence that he should up his game so much when there is a sniff of getting a Ferrari drive? I don&#8217;t think I have ever been so impressed by Fisichella, who I have always seen as a mid-grid sort of guy who only just about deserves his continued presence in F1.</p>
<p>Some of the upsurge can be put down to the car, which the team also expects to do well at Monza. In the sister Force India car, Adrian Sutil looked especially good through Raidillon, giving him an enormous advantage through the Kemmel straight, capitalising too on the grunt of the Mercedes engine, no doubt the best in F1. This led to him making a few impressive overtaking manoeuvres, though sadly for him it came to nothing and ended up in 11th.</p>
<p>Force India weren&#8217;t the only backmarkers to rise in Spa though. BMW, for the first time since Australia, looked quick. Both drivers scored points, and indeed Kubica did well to finish fourth despite picking up a substantial amount of damage in the lap 1 mêlée at Les Combes.</p>
<p>Lap 1 was an eventful lap all round, with Fernando Alonso&#8217;s race effectively ending at the start. But we were not to find that out until his first pitstop, when the Renault mechanics were unable to satisfactorily change his left front tyre. Renault didn&#8217;t want another controversy involving badly fitted wheels, so he toured into the pits to retire. A clever replay from FOM revealed that Alonso&#8217;s wheel was actually damaged in a turn 1 collision with Sutil at the start.</p>
<p>It is yet more bad luck for Alonso. Renault will not like the fact that in the Constructors&#8217; Championship they are now behind BMW, a team which has been lamentably poor for most of the season. With the announcement that the FIA is investigating the unusual circumstances behind their victory in the Singapore Grand Prix, all-in-all it&#8217;s been a pretty torrid time for Renault. The move to the red car cannot come too soon for Alonso.</p>
<p>As for the sharp end of the championship, yet again three of the major Championship contenders failed to score a good result. This time, Vettel was the only one of the four challengers to have a good race. This makes Red Bull&#8217;s decision over whether it should start favouring one driver over the other yet trickier. Vettel now leads Webber in the Championship. But he still faces a massive 19 point deficit with only five races remaining.</p>
<p>Vettel actually had a strong race. In his analysis of the race, <a href="http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/belgium-driver-consistency/">rubbergoat reveals</a> that, when you consider competitive laps only, Vettel had the fastest average lap time of all the drivers. But he was hindered in the vital first stint due to being heavy on fuel.</p>
<p>Jenson Button had a DNF as he crashed out in that Les Combes pile-up. It is his first DNF of the season, making his <em>sixth</em> bad race in a row. Yet again, he has gotten away with it relatively unscathed. Another disastrous race, another two point dent in his lead which remains at 16 points. His main challenger is Rubens Barrichello who, with all due respect to the Brazilian, is not the most threatening of his three main challengers &#8212; not least because he is in the same team.</p>
<p>This has been a most strange season. Jenson Button couldn&#8217;t stop winning in the first half of the season. Now he can do nothing to help himself win. But his Championship chances remain high because the last six races have had six different winners. In stark contrast to the early Brawn dominance, you just don&#8217;t know who is going to be strong at a race and I would be a mug if I tried to predict what would happen in Monza. I daren&#8217;t even predict which car this week&#8217;s second placed man will be driving &#8212; I don&#8217;t want a <a href="http://www.forceindiaf1.com/index/page_id/356/news_id/222">wrap on the knuckles like Ian Phillips</a>!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/25/ruby-on-rails/">review of the European Grand Prix</a>, I didn&#8217;t mention Luca Badoer, who made his high-profile Ferrari début at the race. It was always going to be a tough ask, because the odds were so heavily stacked against him.</p>
<p>For one thing, he had to get used to the car, which he had never driven at racing speeds before. <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/f1mole/2009/08/ted-kravitz-the-european-gp-fr.html">According to Ted Kravitz</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Evidently the Ferrari F60 is a very complicated car to operate. There are many buttons and dials to turn and twist: Kers harvest and usage settings, brake balance and bias levers, fuel and oil pumps, front flap adjusts and the usual revs, throttle and mixture settings.</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure if he is implying that the F60 is more difficult to get used to than other current F1 cars. But whatever, it is certainly new territory for Badoer who is used to driving cars in the relatively tranquil environment of the test session rather than the intense spotlight and razzmatazz of a grand prix weekend. To deal with all of this in the first time he&#8217;s properly driven the F60 &#8212; and in his first race for ten years at that &#8212; is undeniably a big ask.</p>
<p>Luca Badoer must have been as shocked as everyone else when it was announced that he was to race in Valencia. It is typical of Badoer&#8217;s luck. F1 has shat on this driver for his whole career. I would highly recommend his <a href="http://f1rejects.com/drivers/badoer/biography.html">biography on F1 Rejects</a> for a full overview.</p>
<p>He may not be F1 championship material. But he is the 1992 Formula 3000 champion, having beaten Rubens Barrichello, Olivier Panis and David Coulthard among others in the process. So he is no fool.</p>
<p>But in F1 he never got the proper chance to demonstrate his abilities, being stuck with back-of-the-grid teams Scuderia Italia, Minardi and Forti &#8212; and despite usually having the upper-hand over his team mates on the racetrack, politics often meant he found it difficult to move ahead in his career.</p>
<p>You might have thought that signing with Ferrari to become their test driver in 1998 would have seen an upswing in his fortunes. In a lot of ways, Badoer must be the unsung hero of Ferrari&#8217;s success since then. He is the test driver who has helped develop cars capable of winning Championship after Championship following a twenty year drought for Ferrari.</p>
<p>Normally a team&#8217;s test driver would be the first choice to step in if a driver needs replaced. Inexplicably, when Michael Schumacher broke his legs in 1999, Ferrari opted to look outside the team. They placed Mika Salo in the car, when most observers expected Badoer to get the nod. Subsequently, Badoer stayed on with Ferrari having been promised that he would be the reserve driver.</p>
<p>Since then, Ferrari has had a remarkable period of driver stability. Between 1999 and 2009, Ferrari changed drivers only three times (Irvine replaced by Barrichello, Barrichello replaced by Massa and Schumacher replaced by Räikkönen)! At no point did any driver have to be replaced at short notice. No space for Badoer ever emerged. One must imagine that after twelve years waiting, he would have given up believing.</p>
<p>Then Felipe Massa was injured at Hungary. In the year that there was a radical change in technical regulations which is said to be the biggest in 25 years. In the year that testing is banned. In the one year that Luca Badoer had never driven the Ferrari car. And when the next race was at a brand new circuit which he had never visited.</p>
<p>Of course Luca Badoer didn&#8217;t get the call. Michael Schumacher did instead, and the media could barely contain their excitement. Schumacher is a seven times World Champion, but still people openly wondered: is Schumacher up to the task? Can he get used to the new car? Is he fit enough? At 40, will he be too old? In the end, it turned out that Schumacher couldn&#8217;t do the job because of the injury he picked up while racing Superbikes in Germany.</p>
<p>So it was down to Badoer to shoulder the responsibility of making something out of the pickle that Ferrari found themselves in. Of course, the media won&#8217;t be lining up with the same excuses that were already being served up on Schumacher&#8217;s behalf before his comeback. This was despite the fact that there are actually quite legitimate reasons for Badoer to be off the pace. Badoer is not much younger than Schumacher, and is the oldest driver on the grid. But that is not an excuse apparently, despite the fact that it supposedly would have been for Schumacher.</p>
<p>Instead, the media has spent its time openly laughing at Luca Badoer, almost willing him to do badly. The schadenfreude soaked through the reports as the journalists gleefully reported Badoer&#8217;s four pitlane speeding offences on Friday, a symptom of the fact that the pitlane speed limit is substantially higher during test sessions and Badoer needed time to adjust to the new braking points required.</p>
<p>All I can say is, Badoer is not the one who parked his car at Rascasse, but never mind. Of course, the journalists were just taking it out on Badoer because he isn&#8217;t Princess Schumacher so they lost their &#8220;fairytale&#8221; story that is so desperately needed to sell a turgid circuit like Valencia.</p>
<p>I found the gulf in opinion between the journalists and the drivers very interesting. While the journalists were busy thinking up oh-so-witty nicknames like &#8220;Look-how Bad-you-are&#8221;, the drivers in contrast felt sorry for the situation that Badoer found himself in. Jarno Trulli <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77893">described Badoer&#8217;s situation as &#8220;impossible&#8221;</a>. <a href="http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/22082009/2/drivers-supportive-struggling-badoer.html">Lewis Hamilton said</a> that Badoer has &#8220;done a good job just to keep it on the track&#8221;, while Kovalainen shrugged: &#8220;I don&#8217;t know what else you could have expected.&#8221;</p>
<p>The split was also demonstrated on the Chequered Flag podcast. David Croft mocked, &#8220;even Yuji Ide had more promise&#8221; (which is totally untrue &#8212; Badoer has already achieved much more in his career than Ide could ever hope for). <i>F1 Racing</i>&#8216;s Bradley Lord said, &#8220;Badoer approached this race as a test &#8212; and he failed this one.&#8221; Ha-very-ha. Anthony Davidson had plead to his bloodthirsty journalist colleagues, &#8220;give him some space!&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/motorsport/formulaone/ferrari/6082025/Forget-the-cruel-jokes-Ferrari-must-stick-with-Luca-Badoer-at-least-for-one-more-race.html">David Coulthard summed up the situation nicely</a>: &#8220;Who would be Luca Badoer? You wait 10 years for your chance to race for Ferrari and then, despite having no preparation whatsoever, you get slated for not being Michael Schumacher.&#8221;</p>
<p>In <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/08/luca-is-not-that-slow.html">Checkpoint 10&#8242;s excellent analysis</a>, it is shown that Badoer was not actually half as bad as the journalists would have you believe. His qualifying time was 103.4% of the fastest time, when the 107% rule used to eliminate drivers on a regular basis.</p>
<p>He struggled during the race. After a good start, he was obviously spooked by being surrounded by other cars on lap 1 and spun. He then panicked in the pitlane, seemingly allowing Romain Grosjean to overtake him before he crossed the white line. And he had a worryingly erratic second stint. But overall, <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/08/luca-badoers-race-lap-analysis.html">Badoer showed improvement</a> as the race progressed, and noticeably caught up with Räikkönen&#8217;s pace as the race progressed and Badoer became more comfortable.</p>
<p>In sum, yes, Badoer had a very disappointing weekend. But that is mostly because driving standards are so high these days. You don&#8217;t have to go far to find real joke drivers who definitely did not deserve to be racing and did a much worse job than Badoer.</p>
<p>I grew up watching people people who paid to get a race seat trundle around up to a dozen seconds per lap off the pace. Hell, you only have to go back a few years to encounter and Yuji Ide, who suffered the ignominy of being stripped of his super license. The last pay driver went when Sakon Yamamoto lost his seat. Driving standards all the way through the grid are very high compared with ten or even five years ago. This amplifies Badoer&#8217;s rustiness.</p>
<p>Badoer&#8217;s performance in Valencia is the sort of thing that would have been commonplace at the back of the grid in the mid-1990s. You might say that this is not the mid-1990s, but when you consider everything that is stacked against Luca Badoer &#8212; his age, his lack of experience, never having driven the F60 before, never having been to the Valencia Street Circuit before, and having to get used to the modern-day race weekend environment &#8212; I think he should be cut a bit more slack.</p>
<p>I feel very sorry for Badoer, who has had a very tough F1 career where he has been given the rough end of the stick at almost every turn. It looks likely that Badoer will be replaced come Monza, which would be fair enough if he doesn&#8217;t show a perceptible improvement in Spa.</p>
<p>But now Badoer will probably be remembered for these two difficult races where he was thrown in at the deep end, and everyone decided to point and laugh at this man (who, do not forget, is actually putting his life on the line when he goes out to race). I am not sure whether this is better than being remembered for breaking down in tears at his previous European Grand Prix, in 1999.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yes, yes, I know. This is a race that happened almost two weeks ago. Sorry. You should see the list of articles I still haven&#8217;t written yet but need to get round to!</p>
<p>In the intervening period I have received an email asking me what I think of Renault&#8217;s ban from the European Grand Prix. Now I have been <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/05/michael-schumacher-the-most-divisive-man-in-f1/#comment-4577">accosted in the comments</a> by <a href="http://www.f1around.wordpress.com/">Becken</a> for failing to review the Hungarian Grand Prix. So I&#8217;d better do it then!</p>
<p>First of all, you have to give massive amounts of praise to McLaren for their stunning comeback. It was clear at the Nürburgring that this was a team very much on the comeback trail. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/17/german-gp-thoughts/">At the time I said</a> that they could be challenging for wins in the second half of the season. But I didn&#8217;t expect it to be so soon, or so emphatic when it happened.</p>
<p>I am not Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s biggest fan, but I was delighted to see him winning in Hungary. It is a testament to the huge amount of effort that the McLaren team has put into developing their car &#8212; what quite frankly looked like a hopeless task just a couple of months ago. The achievement is all the more incredible when you consider that testing is banned, removing a vital tool to track how the car is developing.</p>
<p>Hamilton&#8217;s run at the front was not down to luck. Nor was it with someone climbing all over his gearbox. Indeed, who could even have predicted that the second-placed car running 11.5s behind would be the <em>Ferrari</em> of Kimi Räikkönen? Are McLaren and Ferrari now once again the front-runners? It could be that kers has come of age.</p>
<p>At times, the grand prix had a very retro feel about it. This season has been all about a new order. But for the first phase of the race the leaders were Alonso and Hamilton, with Räikkönen in 4th. Three names we should be familiar with seeing at the front, but it was most bizarre to see it happening this year.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t help but notice at the same time that the unusual stewards&#8217; decisions have come back just as the old guard have returned to the front. During the first half of this season, the stewards were noticeably quiet (with the exception, of course, of Australia). Not now. Is there something about McLaren, Ferrari and Renault that makes the stewards just lose their minds?</p>
<p>As you might be able to tell, I am not very impressed with the decision to ban Renault from the European Grand Prix for Fernando Alonso&#8217;s wheel coming off. On one hand, you can understand why they did it. In the week which saw the awful death of Henry Surtees in a Formula Two race after he was hit by a wheel, and a day after Felipe Massa was hospitalised after driving into a piece of debris, seeing a wheel bouncing around the track was absolutely the last thing anyone wanted to see.</p>
<p>But the decision to <em>ban the entire team</em> from the next race feels like a complete overreaction, leading to the suspicion that it was a knee-jerk reaction. I could have understood a heavy fine, or some kind of suspended ban. But the FIA&#8217;s justification for the ban seems quite odd to me. They say that the Renault team &#8220;knowingly&#8221; released Alonso from his pit box with the wheel not securely in place. Seems a bit odd to me. Which would deliberately release their car in such a state?</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the fact is that the team apparently took no action after that. They neglected to inform Alonso &#8212; who thought he had a puncture &#8212; what the problem was. That seems pretty incompetent to me, if not downright negligent.</p>
<p>That is why I think a fine would be justified. But to ban them from the race, when we have seen countless instances of wheels falling off cars going unpunished (including a similar incident involving Alonso driving a Renault in Hungary in 2006!), is over the top in my view. That&#8217;s especially the case when you consider that the next race is in Valencia, where much of the crowd will be wanting to see Fernando Alonso in action. Sometimes you think Formula 1 <em>likes</em> to shoot itself in the foot.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, both of the teams that are battling for this season&#8217;s championship will be worried for different reasons. Brawn must now be worried about the drop in their car&#8217;s performance. There is no hiding behind explanations about the temperature. Jenson Button&#8217;s bewildered radio transmission, &#8220;How &#8212; <em>HOW?</em> &#8212; can this car be so BAD?&#8221; sums it up. Brawn have put something on their car to destabilise what was an awesome package.</p>
<p>It is not a complete disaster situation. Jenson Button finished 7th. But it now looks like Brawn are behind at least five teams: McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams and Toyota. Their journey is the opposite to McLaren&#8217;s, and their challenge will be all the more difficult with testing banned.</p>
<p>Button actually only lost four points of his lead, which is still 18.5 points. And that is the reason why Red Bull should be worried. Because if they are to have a hope of challenging for the Championship, they need to stay at the sharp end, and they can&#8217;t afford to have the third fastest car. They need to be at the front, collecting 18, 16, 15 points when they can. Their tally from Budapest was just six.</p>
<p>It must be remembered that Hungaroring is a rather unique circuit, and many of the following circuits are very different indeed. But if McLaren and Ferrari are able to leapfrog Red Bull in the long run, Red Bull need to rely on staying ahead of Williams, Toyota and Brawn if their championship battle is to come to anything.</p>
<p>In this sense, despite only scoring two points, Jenson Button now looks like even more of a shoe-in for the championship. I&#8217;m sure he doesn&#8217;t feel like it. I can&#8217;t wait to find out how the rest of the season unfolds.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The other big news of yesterday was the sudden withdrawal of BMW from Formula 1. This season will be their last.</p>
<p>It can&#8217;t be called a complete shock. It had become very fashionable in F1 circles to say something like, &#8220;I am sure one or two or all of BMW, Renault and Toyota will pull out of F1 this season.&#8221; But the rumours were particularly centred on Renault and Toyota, and BMW were probably widely considered to be the team out of those three with the most stable future.</p>
<p>That made BMW&#8217;s exit a shock. In a way, though, it is not a surprise. It was well known that when BMW bought the Sauber team back in 2005, they set themselves very ambitious targets that were to be met within a matter of a few years. This was the basis for the team&#8217;s famously methodical (although too-clinical-for-some) gradual, targets-based approach.</p>
<p>So while it may seem a bit of an over-reaction for BMW to pull out so suddenly, it&#8217;s worth remembering that this was the year when they were supposed to be fighting for the championship (or regular wins, as the target appeared to become more recently). Instead they have one of the slowest cars in the field. Worse still, unlike with Honda in 2008, BMW fully expected to be fighting for the championship. They thought they had a great car.</p>
<p>Instead, 2009 has been a complete disaster for them. They put too much faith in their kers, a device which they thought would give them an advantage but proved to be anything but. Over the winter they were the only team favouring kers, but it turns out that Mercedes have a much better one while BMW&#8217;s is so useless that they will never use it again.</p>
<p>Now it seems as though the teams have agreed among themselves not to use kers for next season. Such technologies appeared to be a major motivation for BMW&#8217;s involvement in Formula 1. It was certainly an aspect they played up in their marketing.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/03/26/curse-complicated-way-to-undermine-revenue-safety-and-the-environment/">the way the FIA introduced kers</a> to Formula 1 was a complete botch-job. Kers has been left with a seriously bad reputation, even though McLaren-Mercedes have now managed to make it work for them. Whatever happens to kers in the short term, it will be around for the long term. That was certainly <a href="http://www.britsonpole.com/in-depth/behind-the-scenes/behind-the-scenes-at-williams-f1">the view of Williams Technical Director Sam Michael</a> when he spoke to bloggers last week.</p>
<p>Perhaps as a result of focusing on kers, BMW&#8217;s F1.09 car is not up to the job. It must count as one of the biggest disappointments of the season. Even though Ferrari and McLaren also started the season poorly, those teams have fought their way back to the front. Meanwhile, BMW only seem to have fallen further away from the front as the season has progressed.</p>
<p>During the Hungarian GP weekend, <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77176">Mario Theissen claimed that BMW had found the cause of the problems</a> that had struck their car and that they would soon see an improvement in performance. The BBC&#8217;s commentators, Jonathan Legard and Martin Brundle, were both sceptical as they commented on BMW during the race. Legard said that if they think they&#8217;ve got a handle on the problem, they&#8217;ve got the wrong handle. Meanwhile, Brundle said that BMW&#8217;s statements about their performance sounded like PR-speak.</p>
<p>It is highly unlike BMW, and especially Mario Theissen, to make positive statements if they cannot back it up with evidence. Yet that was what they appeared to do when they said they knew what their problems were, while still qualifying 16th and 19th in a grid of twenty cars.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t the only uncharacteristic behaviour from BMW over the weekend. Robert Kubica&#8217;s team radio transmissions on Friday have become famous for exhibiting the Pole&#8217;s grumpy and fussy attitude. He constantly complains about his car, even when it is setting fast times. Yet during practice in Hungary he actually sounded happy about his car. It was very unusual indeed.</p>
<p>Could it be that the BMW Sauber F1 team knew what was coming? Perhaps their statements about how good their car was becoming were a last-ditch attempt to convince the bosses that an improvement in fortunes was imminent. Obviously it convinced no-one.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the BMW board deny that their exit from F1 is a kneejerk reaction to this season&#8217;s poor performances, with Klaus Draeger saying it was nothing to do with &#8220;our current performance or the general economic situation.&#8221; But it was obviously on his mind, as he saw fit to mention that, &#8220;It only took us three years to establish ourselves as a top team with the BMW Sauber F1 Team. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet expectations in the current season.&#8221;</p>
<p>It would be odd, however, for BMW to pull out on the basis of one disappointing season. BMW&#8217;s first season on 2006 was a solid start, and with the first car to be fully developed under BMW&#8217;s management they firmly established themselves as &#8220;best of the rest&#8221; behind Ferrari and McLaren. They remained so in 2008, bagging an impressive win in Canada along the way. Before the BMW partnership, Sauber were never so competitive.</p>
<p>Obviously, the fact that the FIA is asking all teams to commit to Formula 1 until 2012 by signing the Concorde Agreement imminently was a crunch moment. We have all seen how a year, or even a few months, is a very long time in the volatile worlds of both F1 politics and the car manufacturing industry. It should be no surprise that, without a crystal ball, a company should be unwilling to make promises it is unsure it will be able to make. You almost sense that this was a deliberate ploy by the FIA to get a high-profile scalp, a theory made all the more likely by the FIA&#8217;s <a href="http://fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/f1releases/2009/Pages/f1_bmw.aspx">highly undignified</a> &#8220;I-told-you-so&#8221; press release.</p>
<p>As has been widely noted, BMW&#8217;s press release is itself written largely in corporate jargon that seeks to hide the real reasons for BMW&#8217;s exit. My reading is that they would rather focus on motor sports where they can develop technology, particularly technology which is more road relevant. The political issues surrounding kers will therefore have not helped persuade BMW to stay.</p>
<p>It is not as though BMW wants to distance itself from the FIA either. It has pledged to stay in WTCC, which is an even worse example of FIA mismanagement.</p>
<p>But clearly talk of cost cutting or budget capping or resource restriction, whatever it&#8217;s called these days, is not the vision of F1 BMW had for the future. It was prepared to negotiate until the end. But come crunch time, with the Concorde Agreement sitting on the table waiting for the signature, BMW obviously found that the settlement was not what they wanted.</p>

<h3>20. Sébastien Bourdais</h3>
<p>Last year he asked us to wait to judge him, and see how he performs on slick tyres. They were supposed to suit them better. But there is no real perceptible improvement in his performance. In fact, he may even be worse than last season. Bottom of the pile for me.</p>
<h3>19. Adrian Sutil</h3>
<p>This is his third full season in Formula 1 and we still haven&#8217;t seen what the hype was about. Sutil has not really come close to repeating the few flashes of promise we have seen during his career. The one moment was during the Malaysian Grand Prix when he was running as high as 6th &#8212; before spinning off (admittedly in treacherous conditions). After three years, I think we should have seen a bit more by now.</p>
<h3>18. Kazuki Nakajima</h3>
<p>The disappointment of the season. He spent much of 2008 within touching distance of his fancied team-mate Nico Rosberg in the Drivers&#8217; Championship. You might have expected him to improve this year. Instead, we are seeing a more lacklustre Nakajima who has failed to score a point. Indeed, he is yet even to finish in the top 10 all year.</p>
<p>One of the real head-scratchers of Nakajima&#8217;s season include successfully completing 77 laps at Monaco, only to crash on the final one. A chink of light was in sight when he qualified 5th at Silverstone, only to drop like a stone through the field during the race, eventually finishing 11th (which is still his best of the season).</p>
<h3>17. Nelsinho Piquet</h3>
<p>Nelsinho Piquet&#8217;s season is unfolding in much the same way as last year did &#8212; a bit lacklustre in general, but with a couple of half-decent results here and there. This year&#8217;s Renault does appear to be a bit of a shed, but he has once again been comprehensively beaten by his team mate.</p>
<p>But given that Alonso is, in my view, the best driver since Schumacher, it&#8217;s an unfair comparison. Maybe it&#8217;s better to note that Piquet has indeed beaten Alonso once (albeit in Britain, where Alonso was chronically held up by an ailing Heidfeld). But Piquet has more to do if he wants to remain in F1 for a third year.</p>
<h3>16. Sébastien Buemi</h3>
<p>We should be careful when judging Buemi just now. He is the only rookie in the field. And we have seen some stunning rookie performances in recent years &#8212; Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Robert Kubica. So in that sense, at the moment Buemi looks a bit more plain than he may turn out to be in the long run.</p>
<p>In fact, I would say that it is a good thing that Buemi&#8217;s season so far has consisted of anonymity rather than idiocy (although crashing into Piquet in Monaco can be filed under &#8216;idiocy&#8217;). Plus, he has collected a few points, though we should bear in mind that he inherited two of them in Australia thanks to the joined-up brain-fade of two drivers in front of him. One slightly worrying thing is that he seems to have become worse as the season has progressed, but that may be a blip.</p>
<h3>15. Heikki Kovalainen</h3>
<p>Kovalainen races this season in difficult circumstances. His car is among the worst on the grid, and to add insult to injury his team-mate is a well-hyped World Champion. Even taking this into account though, Kovalainen&#8217;s performances have, in general, failed to meet expectations.</p>
<p>He started the season off with a first-lap crash in Australia, then unaccountably spun off on lap one in Malaysia. At the other end of this half of the season, he has been involved in a silly scrap with Sébastien Bourdais in Britain, and an unforced spin into the barriers at Monaco. A relatively good performance in China hasn&#8217;t made up for the rest of his poor season.</p>
<h3>14. Timo Glock</h3>
<p>Glock is another driver whose season began well, but has rapidly faded away towards the mid-point of the season. Unquestionably, his Toyota car has lost any advantage it had at the start of the season. But his team mate Jarno Trulli continues to make the most of the situation, and Glock&#8217;s season has been oddly anonymous.</p>
<p>He can be relied on to collect a steady haul of points when the car is up to it, but signs of his talent are reticent in revealing themselves. A super performance in treacherous conditions in Malaysia is the only notable moment of his season that I can think of.</p>
<h3>13. Nick Heidfeld</h3>
<p>Nick Heidfeld&#8217;s season has been greatly constrained by his poor equipment. On the plus side, he has scored more points than Kubica, mostly thanks to a haul gained at the shortened Malaysian Grand Prix. He finished 2nd there but if the race ran to full distance he certainly wouldn&#8217;t have been that high up. Indeed, he was lucky to even be there after what was, in truth, a flaky performance.</p>
<p>At least this year, unlike last year, he is beating Robert Kubica. But the design of the car does not disadvantage him as much as it does Kubica.</p>
<h3>12. Robert Kubica</h3>
<p>How the mighty have fallen. From challenging for the Championship in 2008, today Robert Kubica languishes at the arse end of the table, having just scored his first points in Turkey. To add insult to injury, he has already used up six of his allocated eight engines. In fairness, most of it isn&#8217;t his fault. By all accounts, his BMW car is awful, and it&#8217;s not helped by the fact that it was designed around a kers that was always going to disadvantage a driver of his size.</p>
<p>My overriding memory of Kubica&#8217;s racing this season has been his fight with Vettel at the front in Australia. That was back when the future still seemed bright. Mario Theissen said he would have won if he didn&#8217;t get tangled up with Sebastian Vettel. There was good and bad in that performance from Kubica, which maybe says it all about his season.</p>
<h3>11. Giancarlo Fisichella</h3>
<p>I am not the greatest fan of Giancarlo Fisichella. Indeed, if I was in charge at Force India, I wouldn&#8217;t have given him a race seat. He started the year badly too, after embarrassingly missing his pit box in Australia, an incident that is said to have tried the patience of his team to the limit.</p>
<p>Aside from incidents like this though, you sense that Fisichella is squeezing the maximum out of the Force India car this year. Given that this is a team on the up, that could mean he will be scoring points soon. He has come close twice already this season (unlike Sutil), with commendable performances in both Monaco and Britain.</p>
