			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Two influential figures in Formula 1 have begun to argue in favour of <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87186">getting rid of blue flags in F1</a>. The problem is that neither appears to understand motorsport.</p>
<p>Both are businessmen who are in F1 to make more cash. They both also happen to be involved in F1 teams that are stuck at the back of the grid, so are more heavily disadvantaged by blue flags.</p>
<p>Tony Fernandes and Richard Branson are the ones calling for blue flags to be removed from the sport. But it&#8217;s funny, because I don&#8217;t remember Mr Branson being so concerned about blue flags not being &#8220;fun&#8221; enough when he was backing the championship-winning Brawn team last year.</p>
<p>The pair seem confused. They try to justify their stance by talking about how exciting it would be. Apparently it would increase overtaking! Er, no. Fans at home don&#8217;t think that Lewis Hamilton in 1st place is racing with Sakon Yamamoto in 21st place &#8212; because he isn&#8217;t! The idea that people would tune in for this, or derive entertainment from it, is nonsense.</p>
<p>Worst of all, an F1 without blue flags would be wide open to corruption. If you didn&#8217;t like the team orders controversy of Hockenheim, you had better cross your fingers that blue flags remain in F1. Because it would open up a situation that would be like team orders on steroids.</p>
<p>Take, for instance, the 1997 European Grand Prix. It is a weekend memorable for many reasons. How about that moment when Norberto Fontana, a lap down, held up Jacques Villeneuve but allowed Michael Schumacher to breeze by?</p>
<p>As Martin Brundle pointed out in his commentary as it happened, Fontana&#8217;s Sauber car was powered by a Ferrari engine. What a coincidence! Or was it? Nine years later, Fontana claimed that he was asked to do whatever he could to help Schumacher win the championship. It is an allegation that was denied by Jean Todt and Peter Sauber, but the suspicion remains.</p>
<p>Now let&#8217;s say &#8212; for the sake of argument &#8212; you have a backmarker team that is disgruntled with its current suppliers of engines and transmission systems. It is in negotiations with one front-running team to supply better engines, and another championship-leading team to supply a gearbox and hydraulic system. It might make the negotiations go more smoothly if the backmarker team could do certain things on the track to benefit particular front-running teams.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not suggesting that any team would do that. But the scope would be there if any unscrupulous team wanted to do so.</p>
<p>It is true that backmarkers can be unfairly disadvantaged by blue flags. But this is an occupational hazard of motor racing. It is the case that the blue flag rules have become stricter in the past couple of decades or so. It may be a good idea to relax the rules a little. But blue flags have been a part of motor racing since the 1910s.</p>
<p>To talk about &#8220;the days of Ken Tyrrell&#8221; is a bit misguided in my view. In those days, blue flags may have worked well as a gentleman&#8217;s agreement. But that was in the days when there were still gentlemen in the sport. Today it&#8217;s full of money men constantly looking after their self interest.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Hungarian Grand Prix lived up to its reputation for being a boring circuit in terms of overtaking, but always delivering action of some sort. Hungaroring may be dull as a spectacle, but there is never a shortage of talking points.</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s was provided by Michael Schumacher. His already infamous move to push Rubens Barrichello towards the pit wall while both were travelling at top speeds was one of the most vicious I have ever seen. I was yelling while it was happening.</p>
<p>I think I will forever vividly remember watching the onboard shot from Rubens Barrichello&#8217;s car live. I was cheering him on as he lined up to overtake Michael Schumacher. Then I was horrified when I realised what Schumacher was doing.</p>
<p>Not that it is much of a surprise. It is well known that Michael Schumacher is capable more than anyone else of pulling a dirty move out of his lowest drawer. His famous tainted legacy: Why does driver who is so good &#8212; a seven time World Champion no less &#8212; feel the need to pull off these extreme moves.</p>
<p>In a way, what he did to Barrichello in Hungary this year was worse than anything we have seen from him before. When he crashed into Damon Hill in 1994 it was to win the championship. When he crashed into Jacques Villeneuve in 1997 it was a last-ditch attempt to win the championship. When he parked his car at Rascasse in 2006 he was a championship contender. This? A futile fight for 10th position in a nothing year for him.</p>
<p>By now everyone knows that 2010 has not been the comeback Michael Schumacher was hoping for. In his recent interviews he has stated that he is only interested in winning championships. Scrapping away in the midfield is not interesting to him. He doesn&#8217;t like racing; he is only interested in winning.</p>
<p>I have always felt that his wheel-to-wheel abilities are actually quite poor. Schumacher&#8217;s speed cannot be in doubt &#8212; when he is out in front. But when he is on the back foot, he switches into panic mode. All of his most notorious moves have been snap decisions that he has made in a moment when he has suddenly been put under pressure. He is a quick driver. Unfortunately this means he often makes a move before he has engaged his brain.</p>
<p>This is what we have seen this year. Not just in Hungary, but also in Canada. He noticeably struggled in Montreal. He had a scrappy race and made a few panic moves, including a chop across Felipe Massa.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, an uncompetitive Michael Schumacher is no less ruthless. If anything, he is worse when he is on the back foot. Is it really the done thing to desperately try to push someone into the pit wall for the sake of one point?</p>
<p>One perspective is that this is good, hard racing. I also liked the <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2010/08/that-schumacher-move.html">viewpoint put forward by Axis of Oversteer</a> &#8212; that this is the manifestation of genuine bad blood between two drivers. Schumacher and Barrichello have a lot of history, and it&#8217;s easy to imagine that this was all in the minds of both drivers.</p>
<p>But full credit to Rubens Barrichello for completing the move. He showed great bravery on the track, and immense integrity off the track. Barrichello&#8217;s behaviour after the race was exemplary. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher complained that Barrichello is a whiner.</p>
<p>It is said that at Spa in 1998, Michael Schumacher stormed up to David Coulthard and accused him of &#8220;trying to fucking kill me&#8221;. I think Barrichello had cause to do a lot more than merely &#8220;whine&#8221;.</p>
<p>Michael Schumacher knows that in order to be successful you have to be ruthless, and at times aggressive. He is by no means the only aggressive driver on the grid. Mark Webber stands out. In fact, Webber was involved in quite a similar incident at Fuji in 2008 with Felipe Massa. But in this instance, Webber&#8217;s move across the track was made much earlier, much more gradually, and he did not push Massa nearly as far.</p>
<p>As such, Webber is respected as an aggressive driver, but also one who speaks about on-track safety with authority. As major player in the Grand Prix Drivers&#8217; Association, Mark Webber has made it his business to care about safety. This is the beauty of Mark Webber &#8212; he pushes it, but he knows exactly where the limit is, then stops. The problem Schumacher has is that he doesn&#8217;t know where the line is drawn.</p>
<p>Michael Schumacher is a hugely successful driver that many look up to as a role model. I would hate to think that he finds these sorts of dangerous manoeuvres acceptable. I am surprised that he did not receive a disqualification. He should also have received at least a one race ban. I bet if, say, Vitaly Petrov tried the same thing, he&#8217;d be sitting out the next few races.</p>
<p>The next race is in Belgium &#8212; where Schumacher&#8217;s fans turn out in force. The race after that is Monza, where the fans have quite a few fond memories of Schumacher as well. I would hate to think it is the case, but you would almost think the powers-that-be had one eye on the purse strings and the PR value of having Schumacher continuing racing &#8212; even though he is a known danger.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/18/bahrain-boring-blame-bernie-not-the-refuelling-ban/">previous article about the post-Bahrain backlash</a>, I noted that I thought the main reason why people felt that the race was boring was down to something fully within Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s control. It is the most important thing to the vast majority of fans, although in the rush to blame the presence of heavy fuel loads or front wings or whatever personal hobby-horse they have, many people have forgotten about <strong>the television coverage</strong>.</p>
<h3>FOM feed the world</h3>
<p>Nowadays, the &#8220;world feed&#8221; carried by every broadcaster for almost every race is produced by FOM, run by Bernie Ecclestone. (The only exceptions at the moment are the Monaco and Japanese Grands Prix, where the world feed is produced by Télé Monte Carlo and Fuji Television respectively.) This is generally a very good thing.</p>
<p>Until a few years ago, races were covered by local broadcasters, meaning that the quality of the coverage could vary quite wildly from race to race. I always remember the Japanese Grand Prix being particularly bad because so much time was spent on board with a below-average Japanese driver trundling around doing very little.</p>
<p>This situation was not helped by the fact that the quality of this standard feed was deliberately stunted while Bernie Ecclestone attempted to launch a premium digital television service, F1 Digital+. &#8220;Bernievision&#8221;, as it was called, was a very good product.</p>
<p>There were <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ft/ftjs018.html">lots of innovations</a> that improved the quality of the coverage, including some smart systems that could detect when an overtaking manoeuvre or a crash was about to happen. You can see this in action here, when the coverage <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzxY0fWocPI">automatically cuts to the on-board camera of Jacques Villeneuve</a> just before he crashes into Ralf Schumacher during the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, the main problem with F1 Digital+ was that it was ahead of its time. The adventure began in 1996, at an impossibly early stage of the development of interactive television. There were teething problems in the early days, including an incredible clanger at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, where the &#8220;superior&#8221; product managed to completely miss the biggest crash in F1 history! But they learned over time and there were innovations aplenty. With the broadcasters struggling to make any money with it, the service was closed down in 2002.</p>
<p>Since then, the technology on which F1 Digital+ was based has been used on the standard world feed, which FOM have gradually taken over from the host broadcasters. This has brought about a noticeable improvement in the quality of coverage since 2004. Broadly, the pictures have been better. Incidents have been caught live more regularly, and replays have been shown quickly. The information displayed on the on-screen graphics has also improved considerably.</p>
<p>But after reaching a peak in quality three or four years ago, FOM&#8217;s coverage has stagnated. Many times, innovations have been brought to the coverage, only to be used sparingly, and eventually disappear.</p>
<p>For instance, whatever happened to the tyre temperature indicators that were used once or twice a few years ago? Why do we no longer often see the graphics comparing the telemetry of two drivers racing side-by-side? What has happened to the thermal images?</p>
<p>Why don&#8217;t FOM buy some of those awesome <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/07/super-slo-mo-and-hamiltons-secret.html">super slo-mo cameras</a> instead of just using the ones in Germany? Why is line comparison only ever used during practice, and even then not very often? Why isn&#8217;t more use made of the graphics that show the position of drivers on a map of the circuit?</p>
<h3>The poor usability of FOM&#8217;s new graphics</h3>
<p>Things are not totally stagnant at FOM though. At Bahrain, they unleashed a new set of graphics. It has to be said straight away that they are very good looking, and with a few tweaks will work very well. However, at the moment there are some major flaws with them.</p>
<p>The font appears to be a version of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_1451">DIN</a>. This is a bold, clear and readable font.</p>
<p>However, FOM have made a mistake by choosing to display the drivers&#8217; names in all uppercase. It is known that all-uppercase is more difficult to read. Often readers look at the shape of words rather than the individual letters. This is much more difficult when capital letters are all the same height and many are roughly square-shaped. It is thought that it may even increase the amount of time spent reading by as much as 20 per cent.</p>
<p>Then there is the odd slanting of the lower-third graphics. I see what they are trying to do, by echoing the slant of the Formula 1 logo. But while it <em>looks</em> stylish, it is pretty painful if you want to actually try and <em>read</em> it!</p>

<p>As you can see, unlike a normal table, the text is not aligned to allow for easy comparison of figures down the column. Instead, you have to read down and to the left. Slanting is one thing, but if you are going to slant one way, slant towards the right! We read from left to right. Effectively reading from right to left (and then switching back to left to right to actually read the information!) is completely counter-intuitive. I know Bernie Ecclestone is keen to take Formula 1 to new markets in Asia, but making us read from right to left really is going a step too far!</p>
<p>The graphics also animate on rather extravagantly. This is particularly irritating with the graphics that update as each driver crosses the line. Each driver&#8217;s name and time now takes a while to animate on. But when cars are passing through so quickly, this is vital reading time lost. The new graphics really are a bad case of style over substance.</p>
<p><img src="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/fom-tower-gfx.jpg" alt="Example (a rare one) of FOM&#039;s tower graphics" title="fom-tower-gfx" width="371" height="211" class="picture" /> There was also a large outcry over the fact that the &#8216;tower&#8217; graphics &#8212; which display a list of positions down the left hand side of the screen &#8212; appear to have been done away with. Although the tower made a couple of appearances during the race, it really is much more useful during qualifying, where positions change much more rapidly.</p>
<p>During the commentary, Jonathan Legard mentioned that the BBC had received plenty of complaints about the disappearance of the tower, although the content of the world feed is beyond the BBC&#8217;s control. For commentators to start bemoaning the poor quality of the world feed once again shows how much of a backward step FOM have taken lately.</p>
<p>On the plus side, there were a couple of interesting new additions as a result of the renewed emphasis on the speed of pitstops. The pitstop time graphic now shows the length of time spent in the pitlane as well as the amount of time spent stationary. However, the stationary time displays only after the driver has exited the pitlane. Why not reveal this first?</p>
<p>They also get the thumbs up for finally switching the lap counter so that it counts up rather than down. I generally like the new graphics, but they have some major flaws just now. With a bit of tweaking, it will look great and work well. But I do wonder what FOM were thinking of when they made some of these decisions.</p>
<h3>Too much action was missed</h3>
<p>But, of course, the design of the graphics is small beer compared with the actual pictures themselves &#8212; and it is here that I think FOM are particularly letting themselves down just now. A few years ago I was amazed at how much action they caught live. Today, I find myself with difficult believing how little action they catch &#8212; and how few replays they show.</p>
<p>For instance, what actually happened to Karun Chandhok? We know he binned it, but how? All FOM showed us was his slightly smashed-up car. A replay of the event was never shown. Did their cameras completely miss it?</p>
<p>Moreover, the BBC&#8217;s post-race &#8216;forum&#8217; showed several replays from the on-board channels that brought to light much more action than FOM showed us. Nico Hülkenberg&#8217;s first lap was rather eventful, but FOM showed very little of it.</p>
<p>Another on-board shot, not shown on the world feed, revealed how Felipe Massa squeezed Lewis Hamilton early on in the lap. This was totally missed by FOM, and caught all viewers, and even apparently the pundits, by surprise when the BBC showed it later.</p>
<p>And why were viewers never given the full story of the mêlée caused in the midfield as a result of Mark Webber&#8217;s blue smoke on lap 1? And, for that matter, why was so little attention paid to the recoveries by Adrian Sutil and Robert Kubica, who made their way back up through the field following that lap 1 incident?</p>
<p>I have to admit that I am baffled. The race was allegedly &#8220;boring&#8221;, so there was plenty of time to show replays of interesting incidents, but clearly the opportunity was passed up. Why?</p>
<p>The whole style of FOM&#8217;s product has become rather stale, clinical and formulaic as well. While a few years ago the feed contained interesting shots of the cars and the circuit. Now there is a greater emphasis on wide shots of the venue. While these shots are attractive, they do not showcase the race.</p>
<p>The coverage of last year&#8217;s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a prime example. There were so many wide shots that it was often difficult to pick out the cars. It felt like most of the time was spent looking at the giant sparkly hotel that looks a bit like a rude sex toy rather than the race itself. And the final lap lunge by Jenson Button on Mark Webber was missed by the cameras!</p>
<p>You can see the moment on this video, at 2:30. Also watch out for when the cars out out of shot when Robert Kubica is battling with Sébastien Buemi at around 1:40, so we don&#8217;t properly see what Kubica really did.</p>

<p>It is worth noting that the FIA obviously thought that FOM had done such a good job of producing an uber-slick but ultra-dull feed that they awarded the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix an award for the best television coverage. I thought it stuck out as a particularly poor performance from FOM. It was another triumph of style over substance. I guess they were trying to trumpet this new grand prix, when it was widely recognised to be an underwhelming circuit that produced a rather dull race.</p>
<h3>When will HD finally come?</h3>
<p>I feel as though FOM have almost given up on improving the television product. F1 is supposed to be the most technologically advanced sport in the world, yet it is still not even broadcast in HD. It is probably the last major sport in the world to only offer an SD feed, and before you know it 3D will have come along by the time F1 goes HD.</p>
<p>Fuji Television are prepared to produce an HD feed for the Japanese Grand Prix (although this is only shown in Japan). I also noticed people praising the Japanese GP coverage for its interesting shots and pretty solid coverage. But Fuji were once universally recognised as one of the worst of the host broadcasters back in the bad old days.</p>
<p>Fuji really have upped their game in the past couple of years. It is notable that we can actually now compare Fuji with FOM and say that Fuji may actually be better. Certainly, Fuji provide a welcome breath of fresh air to F1 coverage when every other race is presented using the formulaic approach that has increasingly been taken by FOM.</p>

This was following Ferrari&#8217;s controversial blog post and the news surrounding some of the new teams that has dominated the F1 news websites.</p>
<p>Yesterday I looked at <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/03/the-state-of-the-new-teams-part-1/">the good aspect of the process</a> &#8212; the relative success of Lotus and Virgin. Today, I turn my attention to the bad and ugly sides.</p>
<h3>The bad side of the process</h3>
<h4>Campos&#8217;s fall from grace</h4>
<p>It is unfortunate for Campos. At first they were regarded as among the most credible of the new teams. But unfortunately the money seems not to have been coming in. It looks as though the team has been saved. This week, as part of the process, its name was changed to Hispania. And today the car was finally launched.</p>
<p>But the car won&#8217;t get any proper running until it arrives in Bahrain for the first race, which doesn&#8217;t bode well. The last time a Formula 1 team turned up to a race without having tested was Lola in 1997. Running up to six seconds off the pace, the Lola remains one of the worst F1 cars of recent years.</p>
<p>Campos had previously run a successful GP2 team, and had signed a big name driver in the shape of Bruno Senna. For whatever reason, though, the prospect hasn&#8217;t brought in the sponsors.</p>
<p>Up until very recently, the driver line-up was still uncertain. For a period, it seemed as though Bruno Senna wasn&#8217;t safe. I do wonder if, counter-intuitively, Bruno Senna has been <em>hindered</em> by his name.</p>
<p>I have an immense amount of admiration for Bruno Senna. For my money, he was the class of the GP2 field in 2008. Yet, look at the other GP2 drivers from that season who have made the transition to F1 on more solid foundations: Lucas di Grassi, Romain Grosjean, Sébastien Buemi, Vitaly Petrov. Now you can add Karun Chandhok to that list.</p>
<p>I guess teams avoided hiring Bruno Senna for fear of being accused of only signing him up because of his name. So instead, shaky drivers like Jaime Alguersuari get parachuted in.</p>
<p>Hopefully Bruno Senna will be able to make something out of this mess. Considering he was unable to race for ten years in his youth due to his family&#8217;s wishes, he has done an amazing job to become as good as he is.</p>
<p>The situation at Campos / Hispania has been messy, and it&#8217;s clear that the team almost failed to make it. But it looks as though things are coming together. The new team principal Colin Kolles has experience in running a lean team from his Midland / Spyker / Force India days. Meanwhile, former Red Bull and BAR / Honda technical director Geoff Willis is also linked to the team.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll have to wait and see if the Dallara chassis is any good. But while Campos were unable to pay the bills, there can&#8217;t have been too much work being done on it.</p>
<h4>USF1: Another kick in the teeth for American F1 fans</h4>
<p>The situation is even worse for USF1. Regarded very early on as a clown-like team, things have gone from bad to worse. It has to be said that Peter Windsor often comes across as someone with a rather child-like over-enthusiasm. Apparently we can add child-like naivety to his list of qualities too.</p>
<p>It seems as though Peter Windsor was genuinely the <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/81664">last person in the world to twig</a> that USF1 wouldn&#8217;t arrive in Bahrain with a car. Stories from disgruntled USF1 employees have been leaking out for weeks now. The verdict on his management of the team, along with that of his business partner Ken Anderson, is damning.</p>
<p>With just weeks to go until the first race in Bahrain, USF1 was left with no car, and having done no testing. Peter Windsor was allegedly in tears when he broke the news to its sole announced driver, José María López (a driver who, incidentally, has not raced an open-wheel single-seater in anger for four years). He has apparently <a href="http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/02/25/us-f1-were-making-the-toaster/">been lying low</a>, having not been seen at the factory recently.</p>
<p>This week, when USF1&#8242;s employees were finally put out of their misery and told that the game was up, <a href="http://adamcooperf1.com/2010/03/02/the-end-of-the-us-f1-dream-as-we-await-the-definitive-2010-f1-entry-list/">neither Peter Windsor nor Ken Anderson were present</a>. When considering also the news that USF1 apparently had offers to save the team, but the <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/the-end-of-the-american-dream/">shareholders rebuffed all of these efforts</a>, I begin to assume that this entire exercise was all about ego, and nothing to do with any of the patriotic clap-trap they came out with.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the FIA finally kicked them out of the championship, too late for a more credible team such as Lola or Prodrive to be brought in. That didn&#8217;t stop one shady outfit from sniffing around though&#8230;</p>
<h3>The ugly side of the process</h3>
<h4>Second hand car business Stefan GP</h4>
<p>Serbian outfit Stefan, led by Zoran Stefanović, originally attempted to enter F1 along with the other teams last summer. It was not viewed as credible by anyone. It was noted that the way Stefan went about securing an entry was rather unconventional. For instance, they did their best to upset the FIA by complaining about the entry process itself &#8212; which won&#8217;t exactly get you in the FIA&#8217;s good books.</p>
<p>However, fast forward to this winter. Quietly, Stefan has secured the intellectual property to Toyota&#8217;s car, with the manufacturer having recently pulled out. Clearly, actually having a car is a fairly good weapon in an F1 team&#8217;s arsenal, particularly considering that certain teams (not naming any names, but I&#8217;m talking about USF1) did not even have a car, despite having been preparing for at least a year.</p>
<p>With the shit hitting the fan at USF1&#8242;s factory in Charlotte, Bernie Ecclestone was apparently trying to help Stefan make it onto the grid in an attempt to keep the field full. The trouble was that, despite having a car, Stefan still wasn&#8217;t terribly credible.</p>
<p>Their preferred form of communication was by bizarre press releases bemoaning everyone and everything in broken English. And when they attempted to test their car a couple of weeks ago, everything was all set, apart from the minor fact that they forgot to arrange a tyre supply!</p>
<p>And I hardly know where to begin with the drivers Stefan are rumoured to have been talking to &#8212; the likes of Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher. <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">Michael Schumacher&#8217;s comeback</a> is cynical enough, but at least he is talented and has the ability to come back after a few years away. Jacques Villeneuve couldn&#8217;t even spend half a season away in 2004 without coming back even worse than normal.</p>
<p>All-in-all, this entire process hasn&#8217;t been F1&#8242;s proudest moment. And Formula 1 in recent years is littered with bad news. Here is hoping that Jean Todt will manage to bring some sense into the FIA&#8217;s processes. I won&#8217;t hold my breath though.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The final part of the factory tour was the chance to see the simulator. It is an impressive piece of kit. The driver sits in a cockpit, surrounded by a massive screen that curves round to take up his entire field of vision.</p>
<p>Little wonder it has been known to induce sickness. Drivers are advised that they may want to close eyes if they spin in order to avoid reacquainting themselves with their lunch. Apparently drivers have been known to be sick all over the place while driving the simulator. Come to think of it, I&#8217;m slightly suspicious because I remember that the cleaner was leaving the room just as we were entering it. We were told, though, that Kazuki Nakajima is amazing in the simulator and can spend all day in it with no ill effects.</p>
<p>The circuit models are said to be very accurate indeed, albeit some more accurate than others. For instance, someone else has exclusive rights to the best map of the Nürburgring. The maps are constructed using lasers. A van drives slowly around the circuit emitting laser beams at multiple angles, creating a map of millions of dots. This means that every bump on the circuit is accounted for.</p>
<p>An aerial image of the circuit is then overlaid on top of these dots to create the environment. But if you look at the circuit, some of the landmarks are not very accurately reproduced. In fact, some of it looks like bad virtual reality graphics. The idea is to reduce any confusion that might be caused by too many cues. If they don&#8217;t think something will give a driver an accurate cue, they won&#8217;t implement it.</p>
<p>Some teams have more sophisticated simulators. In some simulators the car will be on a moving platform to give the impression of movement &#8212; something clearly lacking from the still Williams cockpit. It is said that some simulators even have belts that tighten up to give you some impression of <i>g</i>-forces. Williams shun such devices, which they regard as off-putting.</p>
<p>I have to confess that I have been slightly sceptical about the Williams simulator in the past. McLaren&#8217;s is said to be amazing, but it is jealously kept under wraps from outsiders. Williams have no such qualms however. It is the only simulator that I have seen on television. See, for instance, this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B7rvj1GaAg">ITV video with Mark Blundell</a> and this <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/newsbeat/newsid_7965000/7965045.stm">BBC video</a>.</p>
<p>We were lucky enough to be in the room when occasional Williams tester Daniel Clos was driving it. He was there to acquaint himself with the Hungaroring in preparation for the GP2 races which were being held just a few days later. I have to say he didn&#8217;t look very good while we were there, and he even spun at one point. But those must have been his very first laps round the circuit and of course I am in no position to pass comment. In the real thing, he finished 11th in both races.</p>
<p>It is presumably a service that Williams are happy to offer young drivers in the hope of developing them into a Formula 1 star of the future. Whether Daniel Clos is one remains to be seen. But surely on his way to F1 stardom is another Williams tester, Nico Hülkenberg. Simulator Engineer Jeff Calam is adamant that the simulator is a worthwhile piece of equipment to invest in, pointing at Hülkenberg&#8217;s highly impressive GP2 results at circuits he hasn&#8217;t driven at before. This fact puts to bed my doubts about the quality of the Williams simulator.</p>
<p>Once the factory tour was over, we had a Q&#038;A with Sam Michael. He was largely very open in his responses, and came across very well to me. I was impressed that he took the time out of his schedule to talk to a bunch of bloggers. <p>After that, we went for a tour of the fabulous Williams museum. Here, we were expertly guided by Scott Garrett from Synergy, the company that arranged our visit on behalf of Philips. Although he now works for Synergy, he was previously Head of Marketing at Williams and now has links with a number of F1 teams. This makes him a highly knowledgeable speaker on Formula 1, and Williams in particular. It was a real pleasure to have this sort of insight.</p>
<p>For obvious reasons, photography was strictly forbidden in the factory, but we were free to take as many photographs as we wanted in the museum. And boy did we take the opportunity!</p>

The first car you see is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766701380/in/set-72157621875349228/">Alan Jones&#8217;s FW06</a> with its <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3765914527/in/set-72157621875349228/">Ford Cosworth engine peering out the back</a>. Cars are displayed, more or less a car for every year, right up to <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766777294/in/set-72157621875349228/">2007&#8242;s FW29</a> &#8212; the very car that the competition winner will be driving.</p>
<p>All-in-all, the museum contains over forty cars. We are told that Frank Williams is a hoarder. The team still owns 106 chassis, while it only makes around six per year. Most of these cars are well looked after and can theoretically still be driven. The main exception is the Honda-powered cars, because they asked for the engines back!</p>
<p>For the most part, the cars are laid out in chronological order, and as you make your way through the museum videos are played telling us about Williams during the period of the cars in the vicinity. The relevant cars are lit up while the video is playing.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, this means that they are plunged into darkness once the video is finished, and you are supposed to move along to the next section. It is a pretty clever device to get us to keep moving and get rid of us quickly, but quite annoying for those of us who would have liked to have done it at our own pace. One person sarcastically remarked under his breath, &#8220;you have a lot of great cars, then put them in the dark.&#8221; It is for this reason that the lighting is not very good in some of the photographs.</p>
<p>Despite the chronological layout of the museum, there is still a fairly clear centrepiece. Two cars in particular are displayed on a higher plinth &#8212; the FW18 and the FW19, the team&#8217;s latest two championship-winning cars from 1996 and 1997 driven by Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.</p>

<p>A great moment of F1 geekery occurred when Mr Garrett pointed out that the FW19 on display is the actual car which Michael Schumacher famously crashed into at Jerez in 1997. Everyone went &#8220;oooh&#8221; and inquisitively gathered to look at this particularly historic Williams F1 car. The damage is still evident. I had heard that Patrick Head liked the car to be displayed with the tyre mark still there, but it has since been restored and now just looks like a couple of holes have been punched in the corner of the sidepod.</p>

<p>&#8220;We never got on very well with Michael Schumacher,&#8221; Scott Garrett noted, just in case we didn&#8217;t get the clue. This prompted a cheeky question from someone else, &#8220;How did you get on with Ralf?&#8221;</p>
<p>There is a notable omission. The most distinctive F1 car in the team&#8217;s history, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_FW26">FW26</a> with the &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; is nowhere to be seen. It is perhaps not the team&#8217;s proudest design.</p>
<p>One unusual design does proudly feature though. Williams were never able to race with their FW08B six-wheeler. It was banned by the FIA before the season started over fears that it would be too dominant.</p>

One is <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766124141/in/set-72157621875349228/">Ayrton Senna&#8217;s test car from 1994</a>. The other is the record-breaking FW10, in which Keke Rosberg was the first person ever to set a lap at a speed of 160mph in 1985. The record was set at Silverstone and remarkably stayed in place until 2002!</p>
<p>All-in-all, it was an absolutely fantastic day. Although Williams are not among my favourite teams, they have got to be admired for being so accommodating to us. If you ever get the chance to attend such an event, I would highly recommend it. A massive thank you to those who organised it and invited me.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Who is the most controversial man in F1? Is it Bernie Ecclestone with his bizarre comments about Hitler and Jewish black female drivers? Is it Max Mosley with his political posturing and <del>Nazi</del> <ins>German prisoner</ins> themed sex orgies? Nope &#8212; it&#8217;s Michael Schumacher.</p>
<p>When it was announced that Michael Schumacher was preparing to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari while the Brazilian convalesces, the great ideological gulf among F1 fans suddenly re-emerged. I can&#8217;t remember seeing such strong reactions on any issue about <em>any</em> subject, let alone F1.</p>
<p>For some people, Michael Schumacher might as well be Jesus. You could produce video evidence of him killing a kitten and he would still be the greatest man on earth. Anyone who says otherwise doesn&#8217;t appreciate genius when they see it?</p>
<p>For others, there is nothing that can redeem Michael Schumacher. He is a serial cheat whose team-mates were all hamstrung and whose seven World Drivers&#8217; Championships are among the least deserving ever awarded. You must surely see that he is the most evil man on earth?</p>
<p>My view is slightly more nuanced. He was a bit of both. His record speaks for itself, and he must take credit especially for his ability to build a team around him. But I hated the way he went about racing.</p>
<p><span style="float:right;padding-left:5px;"><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/P/0755316495.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg" alt="The Edge of Greatness cover" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></span> Incidentally, for a fair-minded assessment of Michael Schumacher, I highly recommend James Allen&#8217;s book, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495">The Edge of Greatness</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></i>. I always thought James Allen as a commentator was too biased in favour of Schumacher, but his book displays a very measured and nuanced assessment of his qualities as a driver, and his failings as a sportsperson.</p>
<p>I must come straight out and say that I have never been a fan of Michael Schumacher. Never. And for me, his talent was tainted by his tendency to bend the rules whenever he had the slightest opportunity.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t even rate him much as a racer. For me, his wheel-to-wheel skills were rather poor, and he disguised this by being overly aggressive. That was why he often panicked under pressure, such as at Jerez in 1997. If he found himself in the midfield, he sometimes had very clumsy races indeed &#8212; his botched move on Takuma Sato at Suzuka in 2003 springs to mind.</p>
<p>Schumacher was famous for relying on Ross Brawn strategies to &#8220;overtake in the pitlane&#8221; rather than try to make a genuine overtaking move. I highly doubt that Schumacher would have won as many Championships if refuelling wasn&#8217;t legal. I won&#8217;t lie: 2000&#8211;2004 were my least favourite years of watching F1 since I first fell in love with the sport in the mid-1990s.</p>
<p>Since Schumacher left F1 I do feel as though I have started to enjoy F1 a lot more. Even though some of the drivers are not perfect in terms of their adherence to the rules or their spirit of fair competition, it feels a lot less like a dark cloud such as Rascassegate will come rumbling over the hills at any moment.</p>
<p>Now, of course, he is back in F1 and it has changed again. It amuses me greatly that even weeks before his first grand prix back is due to start, he already <a href="http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-fota-teams-allow-schu-to-test-f60/">sought ways to cheat</a>, to unfairly gain an advantage over his competitors. It says it all about him in one action.</p>
<p>Williams are not my favourite team either, but they were totally right to block this blatant infringement of the rules. Just a couple of weeks before, Toro Rosso&#8217;s new driver Jaime Alguersuari was refused a similar request, and he did a perfectly adequate job. Quite why a supposedly great 7 times World Champion needs to practice so much is not clear to me.</p>
<p>Ferrari&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77551">enormously arrogant statement</a> in retaliation against the blocked request sums up why I can&#8217;t stand the team so much. Apparently they think the red rule should still exist. What happened to that spirit of cooperation they were supposedly so keen on? I guess now that the Concorde Agreement is signed, cordial relations are not so important any more.</p>
<p>It is clear that the testing rules need amending. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/04/the-testing-ban-another-botched-rule-change/">I have been saying so for a long time now</a>. But until a new set of rules are agreed upon, everyone needs to adhere to them, otherwise you may as well just rip the rulebook up (some would argue Ferrari have ripped up the rulebook and written their own anyway).</p>
<p>This is all a sign that Michael Schumacher does not intend to simply go through the motions. I had wondered quite what was in this comeback for Schumacher. I saw easily <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/29/michael-schumacher-returns-to-race-for-ferrari/">why Ferrari were interested</a>. But what could possibly have motivated Schumacher?</p>
<p>After all, he potentially has so much to lose. With his wife and kids &#8212; and we know his wife is concerned because he says he has <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46549&#038;PO=46549">made an &#8220;arrangement&#8221;</a> with her that health is the top priority &#8212; he surely doesn&#8217;t want to be doing something so dangerous. He cannot possibly need the money, and he certainly doesn&#8217;t have anything else to prove (unless he wants somehow to prove that he can be a good sportsperson, but that opportunity has already been shot).</p>
<p>He also risks being embarrassed because of his waning ability. At 40, he is the oldest driver to compete in F1 since Nigel Mansell in 1995, and let us not forget that Mansell&#8217;s last period as an F1 driver was not exactly a roaring success. And after two and a half years out of competitive grand prix racing, there is every chance that he will be rusty during his forthcoming races.</p>
<p>But now we know what motivates him &#8212; it is his sheer, ruthless competitiveness. He may have initially agreed out of &#8220;loyalty&#8221; to Ferrari, but once he&#8217;s a driver again he is up to the same old tricks, looking for the slightest advantage wherever it may come from.</p>
<p>Of course, many would say that this is what sets him apart from everyone else.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This evening I came home to read about the tragic news of the death of Henry Surtees in yesterday&#8217;s second Formula Two race at Brands Hatch.</p>
<p>Yesterday afternoon I opted to watch the German MotoGP, where spectators were treated to an excellent motor race. Once that was over, I logged onto the internet. It was soon clear that there had been a serious accident in Formula Two.</p>
<p>Henry Surtees was struck on the head by a loose tyre after he drove into the path of debris from Jack Clarke&#8217;s accident. Clarke spun off and hit the barrier, sending his wheel flying into the path of Surtees. It seems as though Surtees was immediately knocked unconscious. His car went straight on at Dingle Dell, hitting the barrier and coming to a standstill shortly afterwards.</p>
<p>Straight away it was clear that it was a nasty accident, and the fact that there was very little news regarding his condition in the following hours rang alarm bells. Later in the evening news broke that <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77088">Henry Surtees had died</a>.</p>
<p>It is trivial to point out that motorsport is dangerous. But a lot of effort has been put in over the years to try and eradicate and chance of serious injury or death. The risk posed by flying wheels and tyres must count among the most difficult of these problems to solve, and yesterday&#8217;s tragic events at Brands Hatch underline just how dangerous they can be.</p>
<p>The two most recent fatalities related to Formula 1 were both caused by loose wheels. During the 2001 Australian Grand Prix, circuit marshal Graham Beveridge was struck by a tyre which was sent flying after Jacques Villeneuve was involved in a high-speed accident with Ralf Schumacher. Just a few races before at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, another marshal, Paolo Ghislimberti, was killed following a first-lap pile-up where Jarno Trulli&#8217;s tyres flew off his car. Those are the only two F1-related fatalities since the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994.</p>
<p>Since those accidents, a lot of effort has been put into strengthening the wheel tethers which are supposed to prevent wheels from flying off at high speed. Unfortunately, a solution has not yet been found, and wheel continue to fly off cars regularly. At this years Australian Grand Prix, Robert Kubica narrowly avoided being struck on the head by a flying tyre following his accident involving Sebastian Vettel.</p>
<p>All forms of motorsport face such dangers, and Formula Two has had some accidents involving flying rear tyres already in its short history, <a href="http://www.britsonpole.com/henrysurtees.htm">as Brits on Pole have noted</a>. Questions are already tentatively being asked about the safety of the Formula Two cars which are designed and built by WilliamsF1. But the tragic death of Henry Surtees only underlines the risks that we already knew existed in motorsport.</p>
<p>The situation is particularly awful given that his father, the World Champion Grand Prix motorcyclist and Formula 1 driver John Surtees, raced in F1 during the 1960s and early 1970s, when the sport was probably at its most dangerous, and is still alive today. Henry Surtees, racing in an age when motor racing has probably never been so safe, died when he was just 18.</p>
<p>Both clearly had high hopes that Henry Surtees would reach F1. Here is a video from March of this year where <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/7919930.stm">John and Henry Surtees explain what attracted them</a> to Formula Two.</p>
<p>My thoughts are with the family and friends of Henry Surtees.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A deal has been struck between Max Mosley, Fota and Bernie Ecclestone, and the threat of a breakaway series has been averted. I think there were a lot of people out there who quite liked the idea of a breakaway series. Indeed, given the choice between Max Mosley&#8217;s rotten vision and a Fota-run series, I would have gone for the Fota series every time.</p>
<p>But a split would have been a calamitous situation. The new series, despite having all the big names and probably some decent circuits, would still have taken some time to find its feet. Plus, I couldn&#8217;t help but wonder if the Fota series would have got good television coverage. Don&#8217;t forget that for the vast majority of fans, television is the only way we can consume the sport that we love, so this is an essential element.</p>
<p>In a lot of ways, the roots of the current problem in Formula 1 lie with Bernie Ecclestone. Or, to be more precise, CVC. They are the ones who suck the money out of the sport in order to pay the interest on their debts. That is why F1 ends up visiting sterile circuits with minuscule crowds &#8212; because those governments will pay huge sums of money for the privilege of holding an F1 race. That is probably also the reason for the fervour over cost cutting. If the teams spend less, Bernie can get away with giving the teams less of the sport&#8217;s revenues, and giving CVC more of them.</p>
<p>But despite that problem with CVC, I can&#8217;t find it in myself to be too angry with Bernie Ecclestone. In truth, he has done a great job of promoting the sport, and F1 may never have appealed to me were it not for Bernie&#8217;s efforts. Sure, there are a lot of areas where he can improve, particularly on the dire online offering.</p>
<p>But under Bernie Ecclestone, the television coverage of Formula 1 has been revolutionised. He got his fingers burnt with the adventurous F1 Digital+ endeavour. But while those innovatory days may be no more (and it is notable that F1 is still not broadcast in HD), today&#8217;s FOM-produced World Feed (used for all races except Monaco and Japan) is based on many of those innovations and television coverage has improved immeasurably over the past fifteen or so years.</p>
<p>We seldom have to deal with relatively amateurish efforts from the host broadcasters. Just compare these two videos of the same incident as it unfolded live. One is from the FOM F1 Digital+ World Feed, and the other was from the host broadcaster. (To view them side-by-side &#8216;as live&#8217;, start the second video when the first video reaches 17 seconds.)</p>

<p>The difference in quality is massive. F1 Digital+ caught the accident live so viewers knew immediately what happened. This was no coincidence. It happened because a system of sensors around the circuit could detect when cars were running close together, and coverage automatically switched to those cars in the expectation of some kind of incident unfolding. Later, replays from multiple angles enhanced the viewer&#8217;s understanding of the incident.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the host broadcaster cut to Ralf Schumacher climbing out of his car ten seconds after the incident originally started. And it was a long time until viewers found out that the accident also involved Jacques Villeneuve &#8212; and there was only one angle of the incident. Note also how Martin Brundle had to rely on the superior coverage which he could see outside his commentary box window to tell viewers that Villeneuve was unhurt.</p>
<p>The Australian host broadcasters were not dummies. They just did the best job they could with the resources they had at their disposal. &#8220;Bernievision&#8221; was only good because of heavy investment and years of experimentation.</p>
<p>Bernie&#8217;s television operation was pretty impressive even in 2001, though not all of the innovations remain in today&#8217;s coverage. But it is thanks to Bernie Ecclestone that today&#8217;s coverage is more like the first video than the second one. A Fota-run championship would not have had such a slick operation going from day one, and the fans would have been worse off for it.</p>

<p>Then there is the question of whether it would have had any coverage at all. The BBC would have been scared off, and television executives would have been confused. They want <em>the</em> World Championship, whether or not an alternative series is better in the eyes of the fans. Take, for instance, the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, which I hear is better than the FIA&#8217;s World Rally Championship. Not that I&#8217;d know, because the former is ghettoised on Eurosport while the FIA&#8217;s weak WRC gets terrestrial coverage.</p>
<p>No matter if it has all the current teams and good circuits &#8212; signing up to show a new series is a risk which television executives wouldn&#8217;t want to take. The prospect of the best F1 series being on some pay channel and having no terrestrial coverage was a real one. That aspect of the breakaway scared me.</p>
<p>On the other hand, the proposed breakaway presented the opportunity to create a great new version of Formula 1, unshackled from the financial needs of CVC or the warped politics of Max Mosley. Fota had some crazy ideas, but they carried out market research and were far more receptive to the views of fans than the FIA have ever been.</p>
<p>I particularly liked the idea that the new series could have been particularly focussed on attracting an American audience. The FIA Formula 1 Championship has dumped on US fans time and again, and today there is no race in North America even though it is a major market for the manufacturers.</p>
<p>There would also have been a careful look at ticket prices and the fees circuits have to pay to hold an F1 race. No-one (apart from Bernie apparently) likes to arrive at sterile circuits with a dozen people in the grandstand. It comes across on television too, whether or not FOM&#8217;s cameramen are instructed to avoid shots of empty grandstands.</p>
<p>I could feel the atmosphere of the passionate British crowd on the television. The difference could hardly be more stark from the previous race at Turkey, where the crowd was around 10% of the size. And Silverstone is a circuit that Bernie wants to move away from.</p>
<p>Even the little things that are wrong with F1 could have had the magnifying glass applied to them. Such as, why can&#8217;t a driver keep the same number for his whole career. In other categories such as Nascar or MotoGP, a driver&#8217;s number becomes part of his legend, every bit as important as, say, his helmet design. Even in the history of Formula 1, the number 27 car is almost synonymous with Gilles Villeneuve. Imagine the marketing potential too. But in the clinical world of Formula 1, driver numbers are determined by the positions of last year&#8217;s Constructors&#8217; Championship.</p>
<p>In short, the breakaway could have been a great opportunity to fix everything that is broken with F1. I doubt the breakaway would have been a true &#8216;split&#8217;, and it probably <a href="http://checkpoint10.blogspot.com/2009/06/fota-fia-versus-cart-irl.html">wouldn&#8217;t have had the same consequences as the Cart / IRL split</a>. It was pretty clear from the fact that the FIA never released a finalised 2010 entry list that the FIA didn&#8217;t have a 2010 F1 Championship to speak of, and Fota&#8217;s would have been the only show in town.</p>
<p>That, I think, is why the deal must be seen as a victory for Fota. It has turned out to be a powerful organisation that did after all have the ability to at last stand up to Max Mosley&#8217;s dictatorial authority.</p>
<p>There is a part of me that suspects that the FIA as an organisation simply isn&#8217;t fit for the purpose of overseeing motorsports. We will eventually see how things develop with Max Mosley&#8217;s successor. I think today is just the starting point though, and we will see some more loose ends being tied up in the coming months. There will be power struggles there too, I am sure.</p>
<p>It looks like these negotiations will in fact be <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/06/24/a-deal-is-done/">handled by Michel Boeri</a>. That in itself is interesting because he is the promoter of the Monaco Grand Prix. It was reported that he would <a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/05/22/no-ferrari-no-monaco-f1-formula-1/">take the Monaco GP with him</a> to the Fota camp if the breakaway went ahead.</p>
<p>What we need now, most of all, is someone in charge of the FIA who is not a glorified politician, constantly interfering. I remember Maurice Hamilton making the point once that everyone knows who Max Mosley is, and many people can tell you that Jean-Marie Balestre was his predecessor. But not many can tell you who Balestre&#8217;s predecessor was (for you history buffs, on the Fisa side it was Pierre Ugeux, and in the FIA it was Paul Metternich). Yet the sport still ran.</p>
<p>It sounds like from now on there will be more checks and balances in place, with the F1 Commission being given more of a say from now on. No doubt Fota will continue to play its role too, and I think it would be best for everyone if Williams and Force India re-joined and USF1, Campos and Manor all joined too. That way the teams, who create the sport, can have a say in its governance too.</p>
<p>Speaking of the new teams, I think as we sit here today, with much of the damage repaired, the biggest shame of this episode is that two capable teams have been denied a place on the entry list as a result of Max Mosley&#8217;s petty politicking. I think many of us can&#8217;t wait to see Prodrive finally get a chance to enter F1, and Lola were a promising prospect too.</p>
<p>No doubt the FIA actually had a tough choice to make, as <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/06/23/my-british-grand-prix/">according to Joe Saward</a> at least the Manor Grand Prix team is actually a seriously strong prospect. With costs set to be cut and a more stable future for F1 promised, and with that troublesome Max fellow out of the way, at least we know there are capable teams that are ready to fill any potential gaps that appear.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Among the final cars to launch was the Red Bull Racing RB5, which was launched yesterday. We can safely assume that the Toro Rosso will be very similar, while we are led to believe that the Force India will be in large part a McLaren customer car. Everything has gone all quiet on the Honda front in recent days, so who knows if that car will ever break cover.</p>
<p>So this is it then. And good things come to those who wait. The <a href="http://www.redbullracing.com/Car/Gallery/The-RB5---Studio-Shot-2/">RB5 is a real beauty</a>, though you wouldn&#8217;t expect anything else from the pencil of Adrian Newey.</p>
<p>Of course, we are now used to the strange new wings so the RB5 doesn&#8217;t have that shock factor to it. But the RB5 has all the sleek style you would expect from a Newey design. The pointy, narrow front nose has become something of a Newey trademark over the past five years or so. It&#8217;s very interesting to see that he has stuck to this principle, while other teams appear to be adopting wider, chunkier nose designs.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.f1technical.net/development/224">F1 Technical describes the front wing</a> as &#8220;the most advanced out there&#8221;. You can&#8217;t fail to be struck by the detail in the front wing which doesn&#8217;t seem present in most of the other teams&#8217; designs.</p>
<p>History shows that Adrian Newey adapts well to radical regulation changes, <a href="http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2009/02/07/what-can-we-expect-from-red-bull/">as James Allen recently noted</a>. The 1996 Williams was about as dominant as a car gets. I have strong memories of that season. It was my first full year of watching F1, and the Williams car was awesome. I still remember to this day that they had the Constructors&#8217; Championship wrapped up in Hungary. Amazing when you consider that their two drivers were hardly the greatest ever to grace a race track.</p>
<p>By the time the regulations radically changed again in 1998, Newey had moved to McLaren and he nailed it right away again. The McLarens were utterly dominant in Australia, and they clinched both Championships that season, ending a seven year long drought.</p>
<p>But beware Adrian Newey&#8217;s Achilles&#8217; heel. The RB5 is among the last cars to be unveiled because Red Bull have made the decision to forego track time in order to give Newey more time to perfect his design. This may result in the RB5 being a fast car with possibly the best aerodynamics. But you have to hope that it works.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the opposite approach to Ferrari&#8217;s. Ferrari launched their car a month ago, deciding that they would like plenty of time to &#8220;debug&#8221; the car. But if something is wrong with the RB5, they won&#8217;t have long to debug it. That is even more of a worry this year when in-season testing is banned.</p>
<p>You get the sense that Adrian Newey likes things to be &#8220;just right&#8221; from his perspective, even if that is at the expense of other things &#8212; even things as basic as fitting the driver into the car (hello, Alex Wurz and Juan Pablo Montoya!). It is not a pragmatic approach. Newey&#8217;s cars look the best on paper, but he has developed a reputation for being involved with unreliable cars.</p>
<p>In 2008 Red Bull had a fairly solid year reliability-wise. But the fact that the <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/73200">RB5 had to be stopped with gearbox issues</a> just 14 laps into its first run does not bode well. Red Bull&#8217;s 2007 season was notorious for gearbox problems. Let us hope for Red Bull&#8217;s sake that they will not make a return.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I had planned on my next post being the second part of my <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/11/30/end-of-season-driver-rankings-22-12/">driver rankings</a>. Unfortunately, real life events have intervened. In the meantime, events have overtaken me as Formula 1 was hit by a huge news story on Friday &#8212; Honda&#8217;s sudden withdrawal from the sport.</p>
<p>Now, normally such an announcement wouldn&#8217;t raise too many eyebrows. Ever since I started watching Formula 1 in the mid-1990s, I have watched teams and manufacturers come and go on a regular basis.</p>
<p>I saw Renault withdraw from the sport as engine supplier to Williams and Benetton in 1997, only to return as a fully-fledged constructor when they bought the Benetton team just a few years later in 2000. Ford came to the party when they bought the Stewart team in 1999, only to leave the sport entirely a few years later in 2004. Peugeot left the sport in a huff at their own lack of success in 2000, having only joined the circus in 1994.</p>
<p>I learnt quickly, therefore, that manufacturers&#8217; interest in F1 is almost always transient. For every Mercedes that appears fully committed, there are a handful of Renaults and Hondas who will enter and exit the sport according to the wind direction.</p>
<p>Honda&#8217;s announcement was shocking partly because of its suddenness. The speed with which the decision was taken is made clear when you read <a href="http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2008/12/04/honda-to-pull-out-of-f1/">James Allen&#8217;s account</a>. There is also the fact that at the start of this year Honda owned not one but <em>two</em> F1 teams. Now they have dramatically trimmed right back to zero, and will not even offer an engine supply to any teams next season.</p>
<p>There is also the fact that Honda were massive spenders in F1. This appeared to signify a magnificent commitment to the sport, despite the relative lack of success. But the flipside of this is that it made Honda an absolute laughing stock within the sport.</p>
<p>The huge amount of money the Honda F1 team spent also made it more vulnerable to the red pen of the bosses. No other manufacturer will save as much money by axing their F1 team. It may be true that <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72347">Honda&#8217;s withdrawal is for political reasons</a>, as former BAR-Honda driver Jacques Villeneuve posits. But it is Honda&#8217;s huge costs, coupled with the utter lack of success, that made it vulnerable to such political manoeuvring.</p>
<p>As such, the withdrawal of Honda is not such a shock when you think about it, even though I wouldn&#8217;t have predicted it. Moreover, Honda is not a fixture of Formula 1 like Ferrari, or even Mercedes. The current incarnation of the Honda F1 project only got the nod in 1998, and even then it was quickly reigned in to become a mere engine supply deal with BAR. Honda bought the team when tobacco sponsorship left the sport just a few years ago. Despite having run a team in the 1960s, and the huge success of the corporation as an engine supplier in the 1980s, an F1 institution it is not.</p>
<p>What makes people worried, though, is the economic climate in which this news has come. Whereas Ford found a buyer for Jaguar Racing easily enough in Red Bull in 2003, buyers for Honda will be thin on the ground due to the lack of credit that will be available to interested parties.</p>
<p>Next season&#8217;s Formula 1 calendar has already lost two races &#8212; Canada and France &#8212; and China and both German circuits currently in use have recently warned that they may not hold races for much longer. Again, it all comes down to money, with circuit owners being unable or unwilling to pay Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s fast-increasing costs of staging a grand prix at the same time as attendances are tumbling.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, car sales are in freefall on a global scale, with a number of large car manufacturers seemingly in serious financial danger unless drastic action is taken. In the backdrop of these events, participation in motorsports looks like an extravagance. Even if the old &#8220;win on Sunday, sell on Monday&#8221; mantra holds true in normal times, right now western consumers are tightening their belts meaning that any increase in sales may be too small to be justifiable.</p>
<p>As such, Honda&#8217;s withdrawal is seen as just another sign that Formula 1 faces a crisis. We have a slimmed-down calendar that relies increasingly on flyaway races away from the sport&#8217;s European heartland to help pay CVC&#8217;s bills, and no races in the vitally important North American market for the first time in five decades.</p>
<p>Now there is a slimmed-down grid of just 18 cars &#8212; a number that is getting smaller. When you consider that the 2008 season was originally destined to contain 24 entries, F1 has essentially lost a quarter of its teams in a matter of months. Formula 1 is beginning to look like a shadow of its former self.</p>
<p>Now the question everyone is asking is, &#8220;who is next?&#8221; Initially the finger pointed at Toyota. Many pointed out that Toyota are only really in F1 because Honda were there. Toyota are also, like Honda, huge spenders with little to show for it.</p>
<p>But <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/72345">Toyota quickly put the lid</a> on the speculation by issuing a statement that appeared to affirm their commitment to F1 &#8212; although, <a href="http://allenonf1.wordpress.com/2008/12/05/f1-moves-on/">as James Allen pointed out</a>, the word &#8220;currently&#8221; in front of &#8220;committed&#8221; looks like a carefully worded way to give them an easy exit should things take a turn for the worse. After all, if Honda&#8217;s decision was so sudden, why would a decision from Toyota not be?</p>
<p>BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both also affirmed their commitment to F1. But one manufacturer has spoken with a deafening silence.</p>
<p>I always suspected that the first manufacturer to go would be Renault. Its CEO, Carlos Ghosn, is said to be sceptical of motorsport participation, and there has been a question mark over the team&#8217;s future ever since he joined Renault in 2005. Besides which, Renault&#8217;s history in F1 has shown that it will come and go as it pleases.</p>
<p>Even though some news websites have reported that Renault is committed to F1, I have seen no quotes which the other manufacturers have been happy enough to provide. Was the media palmed off with a stock answer from a Renault spokesperson?</p>
<p>Meanwhile, rumours circulate around Red Bull. Dietrich Mateschitz recently re-bought Gerhard Berger&#8217;s 50% stake in Toro Rosso, but many think he did this so that he could sell it more easily. But with billions to play with and no car sales to drop off a cliff, I see little reason why he would pull the plug on <em>both</em> teams.</p>
<p>Williams has been perceived to be in a vulnerable position for a few years now. It is the last brave privateer team that is in it not to sell cars and not to sell drinks, but purely for the love of racing. It has been hit hard, but it doesn&#8217;t have to be seen to be reducing costs for political reasons like the manufacturers have to. Ironically, Williams may be safer than some of the manufacturers now.</p>
<p>We will just have to wait and see. It&#8217;s clear that Formula 1 is currently undergoing a massive change. Could the ground be being laid for a return to a privateer era? If so, you won&#8217;t find me complaining too much, no matter how painful the current events are in the medium-term.</p>
