			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week FOM&#8217;s <a href="http://www.formula1.com/video/race_edits.html">race edit</a> of the Singapore Grand Prix was published.</p>
<p>It was interesting to see what FOM&#8217;s priorities were, following my post a couple of weeks ago <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/09/28/singasnore-what-makes-a-good-f1-race/">criticising the media&#8217;s coverage</a> of the Singapore Grand Prix. The focus was on the periphery of the event rather than the racing. It was all about the nice shots of the skyline lit up.</p>
<p>In FOM&#8217;s &#8220;race edit&#8221;, it takes 40 seconds for the first Formula 1 car to appear! That is a quarter of the length of the video!</p>
<p>People of the F1 media: please don&#8217;t forget the racing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What do viewers at home love about F1? It is great wheel-to-wheel racing? Lots of overtaking? Strategy calls? Or the venues? Looking at the polarised reactions to this past weekend&#8217;s Singapore Grand Prix got me wondering.</p>
<p>A few of the journalists were pretty effusive about the race. <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/25592558053">Will Buxton was particularly euphoric</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Epic race. One of the best of the season. Wow.</p></blockquote>
<p>I saw that this drew a few hoots of derision, including from me! Because from the comments made by other fans watching at home was that&#8230; well&#8230; it was a bit dull really.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t a stinker by any means. There was some good action and a fair few talking points. But large stretches of the race were rather processional. Hardly epic.</p>
<h3>The epic race without the racing</h3>
<p>Will Buxton justified his comments:</p>
<blockquote><p>No sarcasm. Epic race. ALO VET lap trading, WEB early stop and brill drive, HAM / WEB moment, GLO driving arse off. KUB amazing.</p></blockquote>
<p>There is some truth in what he says. While Webber and Kubica provided some entertainment, this was only because they were out of phase with the surrounding cars strategy-wise, so were not on an equal footing with the drivers they were battling with.</p>
<p>As for the battle at the front, the problem was that Alonso&#8217;s victory was never truly in doubt. He commanded the track all weekend, and always even looked like he might have a bit extra left in the tank too.</p>
<p>During the first phase of the race, Vettel drifted back to 3.5s behind Alonso. After the pitstops, the gap eventually grew to over 2s before slowly decreasing again. Vettel did get mighty close to the end of the race, but this was typical Alonso driving conservatively.</p>
<p>Renault engineers always talked about how conservative Alonso was as a driver. They never had to tell him to turn the engine down; he had already done it.</p>
<p>So it was in Singapore. Alonso had done just enough to establish himself as the certain winner of the Singapore Grand Prix and had the whole situation under control.</p>
<p>It may have looked good on the timing screens. I did indeed get excited when purple sectors were being set and Vettel started to decrease the gap. But the &#8220;lap battle&#8221; was partly down to the street circuit becoming cleaner and faster towards the end of the race.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure they were playing with each other, but neither looked to be pushing particularly hard. Alonso was always in control, and Vettel never looked interested in truly pressurising.</p>
<p>At the start of the race, Vettel had ceded the first corner, setting the tone for his race. It did not look like he was particularly interested in winning &#8212; a suspicion confirmed by Vettel&#8217;s comments that <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87000">passing Alonso would have been too risky</a>. And why bother? Alonso is the ultimate defensive driver, as his amazing battle with Michael Schumacher at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix demonstrated.</p>
<p>The bottom line is that if you hold a race on a street circuit with one overtaking spot &#8212; two at a push &#8212; then the racing isn&#8217;t epic. There might be stuff surrounding the racing &#8212; strategy, crashes, pretty buildings&#8230; But not much overtaking.</p>
<p>Interesting, yes. Epic, no. The ingredients simply weren&#8217;t there.</p>
<h3>Epic racing or epic facilities?</h3>
<p>There is a trend for certain venues to be talked up a lot by the F1 circus, no matter how good the racing is. I particularly remember Valencia Street Circuit &#8212; which has served up three of the most turgid grands prix seen in the last decade &#8212; was universally praised by the teams as being a great venue for grand prix racing.</p>
<p>Scratch the surface of the headlines, though, and you see that they are not so interested in the racing itself. Ron Dennis said that the 2008 European Grand Prix at Valencia was so great that it made him &#8220;ashamed to be English&#8221;. But it left most others ashamed to be F1 fans, it was so bereft of racing.</p>
<p>Of course, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2008/09/02/the-disappointment-of-valencia-shows-that-fans-have-been-forgotten/">Ron Dennis was thinking about the facilities</a>. Facilities are apparently the only thing that matter in F1 these days. Never mind what the viewers at home make of the track. As long as the venue is equipped with a shiny silver throne for the McLaren chief to do his golden business in, who cares about the people at home?</p>
<p>Similarly, the journalists have clear favourite places to visit and places they can&#8217;t stand. China? Don&#8217;t talk to them about it. And spare a thought for poor, poor Magny-Cours. It was so awful &#8212; not because of the circuit, of course, but because it was in the middle of nowhere, as the journalists never missed the chance to remind us!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Melbourne is always the &#8220;great place for a race&#8221; &#8212; is that code for a booze-up? And Singapore is now &#8220;epic&#8221;.</p>
<p>Never mind the fact that the Marina Bay Street Circuit is not great for overtaking. Never mind that the 2008 race needed a manufactured crash to pep it up, and that the 2009 race was <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/11/07/brazil-voted-best-race-of-2009-turkey-named-worst-of-a-bad-bunch/">voted the fourth worst of the season by F1 Fanatic readers</a>.</p>
<h3>TV coverage demonstrates skewed priorities</h3>
<p>The scenario was not helped by some rather lacklustre television coverage from FOM this weekend. It looked to me like the director was more used to directing pop music videos than motorsport.</p>
<p>Coverage at night races is always dominated by shots of the lit-up buildings and the scenery surrounding the circuit. It feels more like the Singapore Grand Prix is more like an advert for Singapore than a motor race. Who was going to bed last weekend without seeing that flashing &#8220;Your Singapore&#8221; banner in their sleep?</p>
<p>When it comes to races like this, Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s priorities are clear. Why else would the <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/26/the-declining-standard-of-f1-television-coverage/">bland coverage of last year&#8217;s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix</a> have won an FIA award for best coverage of the season? Much of the race action was missed. Anyone not paying full attention would have thought that the race was won by a hotel that looks like a giant flashing lady-toy, so fixated were the cameras on anything but the cars.</p>
<p>Those in the inner circle in F1 should remember that the fans at home are looking for epic racing &#8212; not epic Holywood movies, epic nightlife or epic superloos.</p>

<p>I will discuss the events of the Hungarian Grand Prix soon. But today I decided to take a photograph of the way I watch F1. It has been a while since I have photographed it. The last time was probably early last year, soon after coverage switched to the BBC.</p>
<p>With recent changes to the coverage, the desk has become even more congested. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/4849483353/">Click through to the Flickr page</a> for annotations of what everything is.</p>
<p>As you can see, I have two video screens. One is the BBC One television coverage, which usually carries the <strong>FOM world feed</strong>. On my netbook I have the <strong>onboard channel</strong>. I highly recommend having the onboard channel on a second screen. It is interesting to watch during any dull phases of the race. Often it&#8217;s useful to watch it in the corner of your eye &#8212; the onboard feed often catches incidents before the world feed does, and often covers parts of the race that are never seen on the world feed.</p>
<p>I also have <strong>Twitter</strong> open. That has become increasingly hectic as I have followed more and more people. It is just impossible to keep on top of the comments, and I sometimes find that it distracts me from the race itself. Having said that, feel free to follow me &#8212; <a href="http://twitter.com/vee8">@vee8</a>!</p>
<p>At the bottom middle of the main monitor is the <strong>live timing</strong> from <a href="http://www.formula1.com/">Formula1.com</a> &#8212; a hugely useful companion to the race that I have used for many years now. I would feel absolutely lost watching a race without it.</p>
<p>At the bottom right is the new <strong>driver tracker</strong>, which the BBC have begun to offer to viewers as a separate video feed. This is great for seeing where drivers are on the circuit, for visualising the gaps, seeing when traffic is coming up, and working out where drivers will feed back into the field after a pitstop.</p>
<p>Then there is my <strong>iPhone</strong>. I used to use this for the <a href="http://www.softpauer.com/f1app/">Softpauer driver tracker app</a>, although it is a bit redundant since the BBC have started offering FOM&#8217;s own version during the races! The app cost £20 at the beginning of the season. £20 down the pan perhaps. I might find another use for the iPhone &#8212; the Softpauer app has other views you can use, then there is <a href="http://www.formula1.com/mobile_services/live_timing.html">Bernie&#8217;s own one</a>, although this largely replicates the functionality of the live timing you get from Formula1.com.</p>
<p>As you can see, I also stock up on food and drink to consume during the race. Due to the timings, I&#8217;m afraid to say I skip lunch altogether. So I eat lots of snacks during the race instead. Then there is stuff to drink. Usually I have coffee, but today I had tea. There is apple juice there too, and a backup stock of water should I need it.</p>
<p>This is way beyond what I did when ITV covered the races. Back then you got 50 or so minutes of pre-race nonsense which was, let us be fair, nothing like as good as what the BBC bring us (despite the BBC apparently having a much lower budget). Post-race coverage was usually banal and brief. And I haven&#8217;t even mentioned all those advert breaks!</p>
<p>I think the widely held view is that the BBC provide the best terrestrial television coverage for Formula 1 in the world, and I certainly agree that they do a largely excellent job. Certainly in the amount of airtime they give F1, they truly spoil us.</p>
<p>There is typically 50 minutes of pre-race buildup. Then the race lasts around 90-100 minutes, or perhaps up to two hours. Then with the BBC One post-race show and the F1 Forum, the BBC typically bring us a staggering two hours of post-race reaction &#8212; that is longer than the race itself!</p>
<p>As you can see from my desk, though, this brings its own dilemmas. When can I find time to eat my lunch? And when can I go for a personal pitstop? With about five hours of almost non-stop coverage, multiple video feeds, timing screens and internet commentary from all directions, watching grands prix today truly is a marathon event every other Sunday.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In terms of racing, this year&#8217;s race at the Valencia Street Circuit was easily the most successful of the three that have been held so far. Although arguably it was mostly as a result of the shake-up that occurred after Mark Webber&#8217;s horrendous accident with Heikki Kovalainen &#8212; which we really do not like to see &#8212; the fact is that the spectacle was quite good. The start and the first few laps certainly had a lot going on, even before Webber&#8217;s crash.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, as often happens in Formula 1, the on-track events have been overshadowed by the inept management of the sport behind the scenes. The stewarding in Valencia was a complete shambles, making a mockery of the sport.</p>
<p>As if the shambolic nature of the stewarding wasn&#8217;t enough, the issue has been compounded by Ferrari&#8217;s over-the-top reaction. Yes, they have a point. They were hard done by. The FIA systems should have worked better. But, in the words of a former Scottish First Minister, it was more of a cock-up than a conspiracy.</p>
<p>It is unusual for Ferrari to jump up and down and complain about unfair treatment at the hands of the FIA. This is the team that brought us farcical events like Austria 2002 and the &#8220;manufactured dead heat&#8221; at Indianapolis the same year &#8212; yet now they complain about manipulated race results. Never mind, I suppose eight years have passed&#8230;</p>
<h3>The stewarding problem wasn&#8217;t solved after all</h3>
<p>Of course, one of the biggest changes in the way the sport is run this year (apart from the change of FIA President) has been the introduction of an ex-driver to advise the stewards. At first it seemed to be working &#8212; the stewards were staying quiet, keeping out of matters they didn&#8217;t need to be involved in, and generally doing a good job.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, it must just have been a run of good luck, because the past few races have seen a return to the bad old days of shambolic stewarding and controversial conclusions. They still need to be doing a better job.</p>
<p>Getting the involvement of former drivers is a welcome move. But it is only a sticking plaster when the problems with the way the sport is run are so deep. For the time being, the drivers are a piece of decorative tinsel.</p>
<p>It is unfortunate for them that, due to their high profile, the spotlight is unfairly focussed on the drivers. We have often seen, during the race coverage produced by FOM, pictures of the driver in the stewards&#8217; room. In Valencia it was Heinz-Harald Frentzen. But no-one is interested in the other three stewards.</p>
<p>That is a shame because it would be useful to know more. I happened to recognise the name of one of the other stewards at Valencia. <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20306.html">Radovan Novak was the controversial person</a> who, in 2008, claimed that McLaren were &#8220;responsible&#8221; for the Max Mosley sex scandal.</p>
<p>Mr Novak was also reported to have spoken against the prospect of Jean Todt becoming FIA President. On paper, he doesn&#8217;t seem like the sort of person who might like to be part of a Jean Todt-led conspiracy in favour of McLaren. Then again, maybe things change easily when the new boss enters his office.</p>
<h3>The real problem: The rules are too complex</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84868">Mike Gascoyne hit the nail bang on the head</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>I think since we started changing the safety car rules, every time you change something you get all these scenarios thrown up, and I think it is just that.</p>
<p>Charlie [Whiting, FIA race director] is trying to do the job as he sees it, calls it as he sees it, and he has as difficult a job as everyone. I think it is just one of those things.</p></blockquote>
<p>The real issue is that the rules of Formula 1 are too complex. As such, the regulations are filled with loopholes within grey areas. This makes the sport difficult to follow and impossible to fairly officiate.</p>
<p>In recent years, the Safety Car rules have become particularly complex. The FIA has struggled to get this quite right, with the result being ad-hoc changes tacked on to amendments. It reminds me a lot of the constant tinkering the FIA made to the qualifying format in the mid-noughties until it finally settled on the current knockout system.</p>
<p>Already this year, following the farcical finish to the Monaco Grand Prix, a <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/05/17/when-is-a-green-flag-not-a-green-flag/">badly written rule</a> has been hastily re-written. It looks like more clarifications will have to come after <em>nine</em> drivers were ended up unintentionally breaking the letter of the law after the Safety Car was deployed towards the end of the lap for many drivers.</p>
<p>On this week&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/cff1">Radio 5 Live Chequered Flag podcast</a>, Lewis Hamilton described the confusion that the current Safety Car rules create. You can hear it from around 9:40 in:</p>
<blockquote><p>When the Safety Car comes out, you get all these beeps in your ear, and you get all this different information on your dashboard and lights flashing at you. And you&#8217;ve got to have a certain time between the Safety Car 1 line and the Safety Car 2 line. Then between the two Safety Car lines you can go fast. It&#8217;s just all so confusing.</p></blockquote>
<p>In Valencia, the stewards had to make sure they made the right decision. But this meant taking the time to find the evidence and come to a decision in the proper way, which lessened the impact of the penalty. Exactly the same thing happened quite memorably to Nico Rosberg during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.</p>
<p>While it&#8217;s understandable that the stewards would want to get their decision right, Formula 1 now needs to look urgently at ways of making these decisions more quickly and more efficiently. Formula 1 is a sport with a lot of technology at its finger tips.</p>
<p>There are lots of cameras (the FIA has access to more than we ever see on television), and GPS data, team radio recordings, telemetry and timing systems. Not all of this can be analysed on the spot, but a lot of it can. This ought to be utilised much more.</p>
<p>The words &#8220;will be investigated after the race&#8221; &#8212; which used to be almost unheard of but is now a regular occurrence &#8212; should only be used in extreme circumstances. Television viewers and fans at the racetrack need to have confidence that what they have seen play out on the track is the real result.</p>
<p>Most of all, there needs to be a mass simplification of the F1 rules in order to avoid as much this as much as possible. F1 is a complex sport, and it is clearly not easy to regulate. But action needs to be taken, because right now the FIA rule book is more useful as a doorstop than a way to effectively run a motor race.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was absolutely buzzing after the Turkish Grand Prix, a race that had almost everything you could ask for. Even though superficially all the pre-race hype had Red Bull easily in the lead, it turned out that McLaren have turned up the wick and give them a really hard fight.</p>
<p>Red Bull hung on to the lead, as McLaren failed to take advantage during the pitstops. Thereafter, we were treated to an amazingly tense battle at the very front, with all four front-running cars running within a couple of seconds of each other after the pitstops had taken place.</p>
<p>I am struggling to think of any other time when the front-running cars were so close to each other so far into the race. For me, this was racing at its very best. Who needs refuelling?</p>
<h3>Red Bull threw away a &#8220;sure-fire 1-2&#8243;</h3>
<p>By lap 40, the McLarens had fallen back a tad, but Sebastian Vettel was still racing closely with Mark Webber. It transpires that Webber was <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84050">using up more fuel</a> than Vettel, with the German able to save fuel while running in the race leader&#8217;s slipstream. Webber therefore had to start conserving fuel sooner than Vettel, whose pace had picked up.</p>
<p>That gave Vettel the golden opportunity to seize the race lead. But disaster struck when the two <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/8713653.stm">collided in the most dramatic fashion</a> as Vettel attempted to overtake. The German had to retire, but Webber limped on to the pits and ended up in third place.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s one of the most extraordinary things I can remember seeing in F1. This is exactly what I love about the sport. Once you think you&#8217;ve seen it all, something even more incredible happens. Red Bull should have had an easy 1-2. But after being pressed by McLaren, Red Bull have ended up, in the words of team boss Christian Horner, handing 43 points on a plate to McLaren.</p>
<h3>Red Bull face a driver management nightmare</h3>
<p>It is the worst case scenario for Red Bull, not only because a relatively safe 1-2 was lost. The team management now has a complete nightmare job &#8212; it must try to keep both drivers happy when inevitably fingers are being pointed and jabbed in opposite directions.</p>
<p>Initial reaction was that the crash was Vettel&#8217;s fault. He had half a chance to pass Webber, and bit off more than he could chew. While the speed advantage ensured that Vettel could run alongside Webber, he wasn&#8217;t quite fast enough to overtake cleanly. Presumably worried that he would be compromised going into the corner by running so close to the left edge of the track, Vettel turned in towards Webber.</p>
<p>Webber held his line, having given Vettel just enough space and no more. Even though the onboard footage shows Webber trying to steer slightly to the right, Vettel&#8217;s steering movement was much more extreme, and he ended up colliding straight into his team mate&#8217;s car.</p>
<p>My brother and I strongly disagreed about this during the race. I feel that it was Vettel&#8217;s responsibility to ensure that he could overtake in a clean manner. Webber left enough room for Vettel to run alongside him, and it was Vettel who changed direction. This appeared to be the broad consensus viewpoint among most F1 pundits.</p>
<p>It is highly surprising therefore to see the <a href="http://www.formula1.com/news/interviews/2010/5/10855.html">Red Bull management appear to come out in Vettel&#8217;s favour</a>, at the risk of upsetting Mark Webber even when most people are taking Webber&#8217;s side. If I was Mark Webber, I&#8217;d be pretty pissed off by this turn of events.</p>
<p>In a way, you can understand why the team would want to back Sebastian Vettel. He is clearly the team&#8217;s best long-term hope, even if in the short- to medium-term Mark Webber is often the faster of the two.</p>
<p>Moreover, Vettel is the only tangible evidence of a vaguely successful driver coming out of the Red Bull young drivers&#8217; programme which the drinks company has poured so much resource into. I am sure Helmut Marko is a proud person, and he would like to think of himself as a mentor to the drivers he that have been through his drivers&#8217; programme over the years. Mark Webber is only at Red Bull to plug the embarrassing vacant gap left over by the complete lack of any other decent drivers to emerge from the programme.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84052">Helmut Marko may deny</a> that the team favours Sebastian Vettel. But the fact he and his colleagues in the Red Bull Racing management have been prepared to publicly blame Mark Webber for the incident &#8212; when the vast majority of the F1 community holds the opposite point of view &#8212; is indicative.</p>
<p>F1 journalists have certainly been left surprised by Red Bull&#8217;s actions after the race. Will Buxton has been particularly vociferous on Twitter, <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/15047828444">first saying</a>: &#8220;Total BS being smelt around the paddock.&#8221; <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/15055696475">He later added</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Helmut Marko &#8211; &#8220;Vettel was 2 metres ahead&#8221;. Riiiiiight. That&#8217;s why he and Mark made contact, yeah? Red BS stinking up the place.</p></blockquote>
<h3>Did McLaren also crack?</h3>
<p>Meanwhile, are things quietly unravelling at McLaren too? It has not been attracting as much attention, but it&#8217;s worth pointing out that the race between Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button was also distinctly odd.</p>
<p>At the very same point of the track a few laps later, Jenson Button got a run on Lewis Hamilton, and the pair had a ding-dong battle for several corners. Luckily, this time round both drivers were more sensible. A good, tough, clean fight was the main result.</p>
<p>Button briefly led, but Hamilton ultimately prevailed. Immediately afterwards, Button suddenly fell right off the pace.</p>
<p>After the race, I thought Lewis Hamilton looked a bit wooden and tense on the podium. Both Martin Brundle and Anthony Davidson picked up on his unusual body language, which seemed quite negative for someone who had just won a race.</p>
<p>Both McLaren drivers seemed confused when they were talking to each other just before going out for the podium ceremony. They were having an interesting conversation until it appeared that they suddenly remembered a camera and microphone were picking up their conversation and broadcasting it on the FOM world feed!</p>
<h3>The tension between the driver&#8217;s interest and the team&#8217;s interest</h3>
<p>This pair of situations throws the issue of team orders back into the spotlight. Superficially, team orders are banned &#8212; but that doesn&#8217;t stop teams giving drivers cryptic messages, or using mechanisms such as instructions to &#8220;save fuel&#8221; in order to slow down one of the drivers.</p>
<p>Team orders shouldn&#8217;t really be banned, as it is understandable that teams will always want to look at the bigger pictures as far as the whole team is concerned. It has always been a part of motor racing, and always will be. But there is always a tension when a driver disagrees with the team&#8217;s view.</p>
<p>This tension between the driver&#8217;s individual interest and the need for a driver to also play a role as a &#8220;team mate&#8221; is one of the most fascinating aspects of Formula 1 for me. It doesn&#8217;t actually crop up all that often. But when it does, the results can be explosive, as we have seen today.</p>
<p>We have seen that in both front-running teams in Turkey. The situation arose with both teams because &#8212; uniquely &#8212; all four drivers were running so close with one another. Even fourth placed Button could literally see the leading car at all points during the race. Each one of those four drivers would have felt like they had a major chance of winning today. That&#8217;s when egos collide, and team orders begin to unravel.</p>
<p>McLaren&#8217;s engineers said over the team radio that &#8220;we pushed them and they cracked&#8221;, referring to Red Bull. Given Helmut Marko&#8217;s comments that Vettel needed to push Webber because he in turn was being pushed by Hamilton appears to vindicate this. But, in their own little way, did McLaren also crack today?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In my <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/18/bahrain-boring-blame-bernie-not-the-refuelling-ban/">previous article about the post-Bahrain backlash</a>, I noted that I thought the main reason why people felt that the race was boring was down to something fully within Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s control. It is the most important thing to the vast majority of fans, although in the rush to blame the presence of heavy fuel loads or front wings or whatever personal hobby-horse they have, many people have forgotten about <strong>the television coverage</strong>.</p>
<h3>FOM feed the world</h3>
<p>Nowadays, the &#8220;world feed&#8221; carried by every broadcaster for almost every race is produced by FOM, run by Bernie Ecclestone. (The only exceptions at the moment are the Monaco and Japanese Grands Prix, where the world feed is produced by Télé Monte Carlo and Fuji Television respectively.) This is generally a very good thing.</p>
<p>Until a few years ago, races were covered by local broadcasters, meaning that the quality of the coverage could vary quite wildly from race to race. I always remember the Japanese Grand Prix being particularly bad because so much time was spent on board with a below-average Japanese driver trundling around doing very little.</p>
<p>This situation was not helped by the fact that the quality of this standard feed was deliberately stunted while Bernie Ecclestone attempted to launch a premium digital television service, F1 Digital+. &#8220;Bernievision&#8221;, as it was called, was a very good product.</p>
<p>There were <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ft/ftjs018.html">lots of innovations</a> that improved the quality of the coverage, including some smart systems that could detect when an overtaking manoeuvre or a crash was about to happen. You can see this in action here, when the coverage <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzxY0fWocPI">automatically cuts to the on-board camera of Jacques Villeneuve</a> just before he crashes into Ralf Schumacher during the 2001 Australian Grand Prix.</p>

<p>Unfortunately, the main problem with F1 Digital+ was that it was ahead of its time. The adventure began in 1996, at an impossibly early stage of the development of interactive television. There were teething problems in the early days, including an incredible clanger at the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, where the &#8220;superior&#8221; product managed to completely miss the biggest crash in F1 history! But they learned over time and there were innovations aplenty. With the broadcasters struggling to make any money with it, the service was closed down in 2002.</p>
<p>Since then, the technology on which F1 Digital+ was based has been used on the standard world feed, which FOM have gradually taken over from the host broadcasters. This has brought about a noticeable improvement in the quality of coverage since 2004. Broadly, the pictures have been better. Incidents have been caught live more regularly, and replays have been shown quickly. The information displayed on the on-screen graphics has also improved considerably.</p>
<p>But after reaching a peak in quality three or four years ago, FOM&#8217;s coverage has stagnated. Many times, innovations have been brought to the coverage, only to be used sparingly, and eventually disappear.</p>
<p>For instance, whatever happened to the tyre temperature indicators that were used once or twice a few years ago? Why do we no longer often see the graphics comparing the telemetry of two drivers racing side-by-side? What has happened to the thermal images?</p>
<p>Why don&#8217;t FOM buy some of those awesome <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/07/super-slo-mo-and-hamiltons-secret.html">super slo-mo cameras</a> instead of just using the ones in Germany? Why is line comparison only ever used during practice, and even then not very often? Why isn&#8217;t more use made of the graphics that show the position of drivers on a map of the circuit?</p>
<h3>The poor usability of FOM&#8217;s new graphics</h3>
<p>Things are not totally stagnant at FOM though. At Bahrain, they unleashed a new set of graphics. It has to be said straight away that they are very good looking, and with a few tweaks will work very well. However, at the moment there are some major flaws with them.</p>
<p>The font appears to be a version of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_1451">DIN</a>. This is a bold, clear and readable font.</p>
<p>However, FOM have made a mistake by choosing to display the drivers&#8217; names in all uppercase. It is known that all-uppercase is more difficult to read. Often readers look at the shape of words rather than the individual letters. This is much more difficult when capital letters are all the same height and many are roughly square-shaped. It is thought that it may even increase the amount of time spent reading by as much as 20 per cent.</p>
<p>Then there is the odd slanting of the lower-third graphics. I see what they are trying to do, by echoing the slant of the Formula 1 logo. But while it <em>looks</em> stylish, it is pretty painful if you want to actually try and <em>read</em> it!</p>

<p>As you can see, unlike a normal table, the text is not aligned to allow for easy comparison of figures down the column. Instead, you have to read down and to the left. Slanting is one thing, but if you are going to slant one way, slant towards the right! We read from left to right. Effectively reading from right to left (and then switching back to left to right to actually read the information!) is completely counter-intuitive. I know Bernie Ecclestone is keen to take Formula 1 to new markets in Asia, but making us read from right to left really is going a step too far!</p>
<p>The graphics also animate on rather extravagantly. This is particularly irritating with the graphics that update as each driver crosses the line. Each driver&#8217;s name and time now takes a while to animate on. But when cars are passing through so quickly, this is vital reading time lost. The new graphics really are a bad case of style over substance.</p>
<p><img src="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/fom-tower-gfx.jpg" alt="Example (a rare one) of FOM&#039;s tower graphics" title="fom-tower-gfx" width="371" height="211" class="picture" /> There was also a large outcry over the fact that the &#8216;tower&#8217; graphics &#8212; which display a list of positions down the left hand side of the screen &#8212; appear to have been done away with. Although the tower made a couple of appearances during the race, it really is much more useful during qualifying, where positions change much more rapidly.</p>
<p>During the commentary, Jonathan Legard mentioned that the BBC had received plenty of complaints about the disappearance of the tower, although the content of the world feed is beyond the BBC&#8217;s control. For commentators to start bemoaning the poor quality of the world feed once again shows how much of a backward step FOM have taken lately.</p>
<p>On the plus side, there were a couple of interesting new additions as a result of the renewed emphasis on the speed of pitstops. The pitstop time graphic now shows the length of time spent in the pitlane as well as the amount of time spent stationary. However, the stationary time displays only after the driver has exited the pitlane. Why not reveal this first?</p>
<p>They also get the thumbs up for finally switching the lap counter so that it counts up rather than down. I generally like the new graphics, but they have some major flaws just now. With a bit of tweaking, it will look great and work well. But I do wonder what FOM were thinking of when they made some of these decisions.</p>
<h3>Too much action was missed</h3>
<p>But, of course, the design of the graphics is small beer compared with the actual pictures themselves &#8212; and it is here that I think FOM are particularly letting themselves down just now. A few years ago I was amazed at how much action they caught live. Today, I find myself with difficult believing how little action they catch &#8212; and how few replays they show.</p>
<p>For instance, what actually happened to Karun Chandhok? We know he binned it, but how? All FOM showed us was his slightly smashed-up car. A replay of the event was never shown. Did their cameras completely miss it?</p>
<p>Moreover, the BBC&#8217;s post-race &#8216;forum&#8217; showed several replays from the on-board channels that brought to light much more action than FOM showed us. Nico Hülkenberg&#8217;s first lap was rather eventful, but FOM showed very little of it.</p>
<p>Another on-board shot, not shown on the world feed, revealed how Felipe Massa squeezed Lewis Hamilton early on in the lap. This was totally missed by FOM, and caught all viewers, and even apparently the pundits, by surprise when the BBC showed it later.</p>
<p>And why were viewers never given the full story of the mêlée caused in the midfield as a result of Mark Webber&#8217;s blue smoke on lap 1? And, for that matter, why was so little attention paid to the recoveries by Adrian Sutil and Robert Kubica, who made their way back up through the field following that lap 1 incident?</p>
<p>I have to admit that I am baffled. The race was allegedly &#8220;boring&#8221;, so there was plenty of time to show replays of interesting incidents, but clearly the opportunity was passed up. Why?</p>
<p>The whole style of FOM&#8217;s product has become rather stale, clinical and formulaic as well. While a few years ago the feed contained interesting shots of the cars and the circuit. Now there is a greater emphasis on wide shots of the venue. While these shots are attractive, they do not showcase the race.</p>
<p>The coverage of last year&#8217;s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a prime example. There were so many wide shots that it was often difficult to pick out the cars. It felt like most of the time was spent looking at the giant sparkly hotel that looks a bit like a rude sex toy rather than the race itself. And the final lap lunge by Jenson Button on Mark Webber was missed by the cameras!</p>
<p>You can see the moment on this video, at 2:30. Also watch out for when the cars out out of shot when Robert Kubica is battling with Sébastien Buemi at around 1:40, so we don&#8217;t properly see what Kubica really did.</p>

<p>It is worth noting that the FIA obviously thought that FOM had done such a good job of producing an uber-slick but ultra-dull feed that they awarded the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix an award for the best television coverage. I thought it stuck out as a particularly poor performance from FOM. It was another triumph of style over substance. I guess they were trying to trumpet this new grand prix, when it was widely recognised to be an underwhelming circuit that produced a rather dull race.</p>
<h3>When will HD finally come?</h3>
<p>I feel as though FOM have almost given up on improving the television product. F1 is supposed to be the most technologically advanced sport in the world, yet it is still not even broadcast in HD. It is probably the last major sport in the world to only offer an SD feed, and before you know it 3D will have come along by the time F1 goes HD.</p>
<p>Fuji Television are prepared to produce an HD feed for the Japanese Grand Prix (although this is only shown in Japan). I also noticed people praising the Japanese GP coverage for its interesting shots and pretty solid coverage. But Fuji were once universally recognised as one of the worst of the host broadcasters back in the bad old days.</p>
<p>Fuji really have upped their game in the past couple of years. It is notable that we can actually now compare Fuji with FOM and say that Fuji may actually be better. Certainly, Fuji provide a welcome breath of fresh air to F1 coverage when every other race is presented using the formulaic approach that has increasingly been taken by FOM.</p>

<p><em>To break this process in gently, I have decided to make the first post a light-hearted look at what might happen in the 2010 Formula 1 season.</em></p>

<h3>The season will be the most exciting ever, but the title of the DVD will make it sound like a wet Wednesday</h3>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002RWJFBO?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=B002RWJFBO"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51c7p7AcVwL._SL500_AA168_.jpg" alt="Formula 1 Season Review 2009 cover" class="picture" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=B002RWJFBO" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />In 2006, Fernando Alonso took his second World Championship in scintillating style that went down to the wire. The title of the official Formula 1 season review DVD was &#8220;Once Again&#8221;, making it sound like your drunk uncle has just wet himself for the umpteenth time.</p>
<p>In 2007, after a tense season-long battle between McLaren team-mates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen amazed the world by snatching the title from both of them in the final race of the season, overcoming a 17 point deficit with two races to go. The DVD was called &#8220;Kimi made it at last&#8221;, as though he had just come home late from a heavy night.</p>
<p>In 2008 Lewis Hamilton took the Championship in heart attack-inducing style on the last corner of the last lap of the last race. The DVD was called &#8220;Luck does not come into it&#8221;, which I <em>still</em> haven&#8217;t worked out the meaning of.</p>
<p>And the DVD really sold the 2009 season well by calling it &#8220;Not in a hurry&#8230;&#8221;, as if Jenson Button did not have a record-breaking winning streak at the start of the season.</p>
<p>Even if the Championship showdown is host to the first ever alien visit to this planet and is settled with a massive 200mph laser gun fight involving seventeen drivers from the planet Q&#8217;txxp&#8217;he, it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if the DVD was given some madly dull title like, &#8220;I&#8217;d rather be watching paint dry&#8221;, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Corrie on the other side?&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;d stick with watching lawn bowls if I were you&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Confectionery diffuser face-off</h3>
<p>2009 was the year of the Double Decker diffusers. The 2010 pre-season testing period has seen a similar curiosity surrounding the rear end of F1 cars, with teams being notably coy about showing off their behinds.</p>
<p>The concept has now moved way beyond Double Decker diffusers. Among the new types of diffuser will be Red Bull&#8217;s Drifter diffuser, McLaren&#8217;s Mars Bar diffuser, Toro Rosso&#8217;s Curly Wurly diffuser and USF1&#8242;s Snickers diffuser. However, once again, Ross Brawn will find the upper hand when he reveals Mercedes&#8217;s Boost diffuser.</p>
<h3>FOM will fail to improve television coverage</h3>
<p>Although Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s FOM is supposedly covering the world&#8217;s most technologically advanced sport, the television pictures will still resemble a smudgy YouTube video. Bernie Ecclestone will insist that there is no need for HD coverage because, &#8220;my IT guy told me he swears by his old CRT television&#8221;.</p>

<p>Despite the decision to give HD the cold shoulder, FOM will stick with their existing on-screen graphics, which are so small that they are actually bloody impossible to read on any 4:3 display. They may be declaring the start of World War III on those captions for all I know.</p>
<h3>Intense McLaren Championship rivalry</h3>
<p>The title will come down to the wire in Abu Dhabi, with the main protagonists being McLaren team mates Hamilton and Button.</p>
<p>Towards the end of the race, John Button will think he has the upper hand by unleashing his killer move &#8211; undoing the last button on his shirt. Little will he anticipate that Anthony Hamilton will win the Championship by staring even more intensely.</p>
<h3>Michael Schumacher will be the world&#8217;s most superstitious man</h3>
<p>Following on from the revelation that Michael Schumacher has a mad <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns22036.html">superstition for odd numbers</a>, the German will reveal a litany of hitherto unknown superstitions. Among these will be an insistence that his team mate runs with an inferior set-up because &#8220;it makes me feel a bit better about my car&#8221;.</p>
<p>He will also reveal that he has a special form of OCD that means he just has to brake-test any drivers that are behind him, and cannot stop himself from driving straight into anyone who has just overtaken him. He also has a strong superstition for getting to choose his own parking space, and will park his Mercedes car in Race Control, where he can literally control the race by tampering with the timing system.</p>
<p>No-one will think to point any of this out, because nothing is allowed to get in the way of Princess Michelle&#8217;s Fairy Tale Comeback.</p>
<h3>Cosmopolitan Valencia will continue grid boy tradition</h3>
<p>Valencia&#8217;s tradition of having grid boys in addition to grid girls at the European Grand Prix will continue. Coincidentally, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/flav.jpg">Flavio Briatore will make his F1 comeback</a> at the very same race.</p>
<h3>New teams to struggle</h3>
<p><img src="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/zavvi-racing1.jpg" alt="Zavvi Racing" title="Zavvi Racing" width="178" height="131" class="picture" /></p>
<p>New teams will be unable to shake off speculation surrounding their ability to see out the season. While the early focus will be on USF1 and Campos, the spotlight will soon switch to Virgin Racing.</p>
<p>Suspicions will be raised mid-season when the Virgin team mysteriously re-brands with a green livery and makes a formal application to change its name to &#8216;Zavvi&#8217;. A few months later, the team will run out of money and close down, but not before a special fixtures and fittings sale where fans will have the opportunity to buy the screws that once held the car together.</p>
<h3>The bearded beggar who appears at races is not homeless</h3>
<p>Having made a tactical error by trying to get a drive at Mercedes only for some seven time World Champion or other to get in the way, Nick Heidfeld will begin the 2010 season without a job. He will resort to sleeping on the floor in the paddock and begging.</p>
<p>If you see a suspicious-looking bearded man in the paddock, it is probably Mr Heidfeld, the world&#8217;s greatest ever second place finisher. Although he might speak as though he is slightly drunk, he is not homeless and is perfectly harmless.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What a grand prix weekend that was. It just goes to show you what a decent circuit can do for racing. Boy, can Spa do it for racing. It also clearly does it for Kimi Räikkönen, who is always mesmerising in this most inspirational of settings.</p>
<p>Räikkönen confuses people a lot of the time with his apparent indifference. Often he simply does not seem to be bothered. But he <em>always</em> goes well at Spa. Indeed, he is the only current driver to have won there. His record includes a remarkable fight to the front from 10th on the grid in what was an otherwise barren 2004 season for him.</p>
<p>There are some parallels between that victory and this year&#8217;s one. Like McLaren in 2004, this year Ferrari began the season with uncompetitive machinery, but have developed the car into a winner for Belgium. This victory ends a 25 race drought for Räikkönen; the 2004 victory ended an even longer one.</p>
<p>In a lot of ways, Räikkönen&#8217;s victory was among the least surprising things to happen during an extraordinary weekend. The Finn usually gives a good performance in Belgium, but despite winning the race he was overshadowed by Giancarlo Fisichella, a man who would have been sacked at the end of last year if I had any say in such matters.</p>
<p>Question marks remain over a victory margin which perhaps ought to have been longer than one second. Then some say he wouldn&#8217;t have won were it not for kers &#8212; this is probably true. Others say that he gained an advantage by running wide and taking the run-off at La Source on lap 1.</p>
<p>However, David Coulthard says that Räikkönen will have gained no advantage from running wide, a fact which is apparently corroborated by the fact that Button took a similar line and lost places. It&#8217;s more likely that Räikkönen gained those spots by deploying his kers, the exit of La Source being the ideal spot to unleash that kers energy on lap 1 rather than the start itself. <a href="http://axisofoversteer.blogspot.com/2009/08/it-was-ferrari-by-kers.html">See Axis of Oversteer for a good debate</a> on this matter.</p>
<p>Even so, the plaudits are going to Giancarlo Fisichella for his stunning drive to second place in the Force India. Is it a coincidence that he should up his game so much when there is a sniff of getting a Ferrari drive? I don&#8217;t think I have ever been so impressed by Fisichella, who I have always seen as a mid-grid sort of guy who only just about deserves his continued presence in F1.</p>
<p>Some of the upsurge can be put down to the car, which the team also expects to do well at Monza. In the sister Force India car, Adrian Sutil looked especially good through Raidillon, giving him an enormous advantage through the Kemmel straight, capitalising too on the grunt of the Mercedes engine, no doubt the best in F1. This led to him making a few impressive overtaking manoeuvres, though sadly for him it came to nothing and ended up in 11th.</p>
<p>Force India weren&#8217;t the only backmarkers to rise in Spa though. BMW, for the first time since Australia, looked quick. Both drivers scored points, and indeed Kubica did well to finish fourth despite picking up a substantial amount of damage in the lap 1 mêlée at Les Combes.</p>
<p>Lap 1 was an eventful lap all round, with Fernando Alonso&#8217;s race effectively ending at the start. But we were not to find that out until his first pitstop, when the Renault mechanics were unable to satisfactorily change his left front tyre. Renault didn&#8217;t want another controversy involving badly fitted wheels, so he toured into the pits to retire. A clever replay from FOM revealed that Alonso&#8217;s wheel was actually damaged in a turn 1 collision with Sutil at the start.</p>
<p>It is yet more bad luck for Alonso. Renault will not like the fact that in the Constructors&#8217; Championship they are now behind BMW, a team which has been lamentably poor for most of the season. With the announcement that the FIA is investigating the unusual circumstances behind their victory in the Singapore Grand Prix, all-in-all it&#8217;s been a pretty torrid time for Renault. The move to the red car cannot come too soon for Alonso.</p>
<p>As for the sharp end of the championship, yet again three of the major Championship contenders failed to score a good result. This time, Vettel was the only one of the four challengers to have a good race. This makes Red Bull&#8217;s decision over whether it should start favouring one driver over the other yet trickier. Vettel now leads Webber in the Championship. But he still faces a massive 19 point deficit with only five races remaining.</p>
<p>Vettel actually had a strong race. In his analysis of the race, <a href="http://f1numbers.wordpress.com/2009/08/30/belgium-driver-consistency/">rubbergoat reveals</a> that, when you consider competitive laps only, Vettel had the fastest average lap time of all the drivers. But he was hindered in the vital first stint due to being heavy on fuel.</p>
<p>Jenson Button had a DNF as he crashed out in that Les Combes pile-up. It is his first DNF of the season, making his <em>sixth</em> bad race in a row. Yet again, he has gotten away with it relatively unscathed. Another disastrous race, another two point dent in his lead which remains at 16 points. His main challenger is Rubens Barrichello who, with all due respect to the Brazilian, is not the most threatening of his three main challengers &#8212; not least because he is in the same team.</p>
<p>This has been a most strange season. Jenson Button couldn&#8217;t stop winning in the first half of the season. Now he can do nothing to help himself win. But his Championship chances remain high because the last six races have had six different winners. In stark contrast to the early Brawn dominance, you just don&#8217;t know who is going to be strong at a race and I would be a mug if I tried to predict what would happen in Monza. I daren&#8217;t even predict which car this week&#8217;s second placed man will be driving &#8212; I don&#8217;t want a <a href="http://www.forceindiaf1.com/index/page_id/356/news_id/222">wrap on the knuckles like Ian Phillips</a>!</p>

<p>The BBC&#8217;s lead commentator Jonathan Legard has come in for a lot of stick on the internet. In my view, most of it is wholly unwarranted. Indeed, I am quite confused at the negative reaction he has been getting. I used to listen to him from time to time when he was on Radio 5 Live, and I was a fan of him then. In my view, it took years for the station&#8217;s Formula 1 coverage to recover from his departure. He has a good voice and is clearly passionate and highly knowledgable about F1. I like his tone and his sense of humour.</p>
<p>Most importantly of all for his job is that he almost never makes mistakes. The internet collapsed in a heap of laughter when he committed the heinous crime of mistaking a replay for live action during the Malaysian Grand Prix. Name me a commentator who has never done that? There was even a mitigating factor then, as FOM&#8217;s replay graphic was playing up during the race. Apart from that, I can&#8217;t think of any time when he has made a bad mistake, misidentified a driver (except for the odd mixed-up Red Bull for a Toro Rosso &#8212; we&#8217;ve all been there) or misread a situation. He has had a couple of bad race starts, but once the race settles in he is fine.</p>
<p>In contrast, Brundle has made a few errors this season, including a mega clanger when he spent half the race in Spain confusing the prime and option tyres, which actively ruined viewers&#8217; understanding of the race. During qualifying at the British Grand Prix he spent an entire lap talking about Räikkönen even though we were watching Massa, a fact backed up by a FOM caption. He made a few mistakes during the German GP as well.</p>
<p>Some criticise Legard&#8217;s reliance on crutch phrases, which I would agree is one jarring thing about his commentary. But let us face it, at times Murray Walker may as well have had a drawstring coming out of his back, and everyone found that endearing. Why it should be different for Legard I don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p>It is true that the chemistry between him and Martin Brundle has not been very good, but that was inevitably going to take time to build up, no matter who Brundle was commentating with. Legard has a good conversational style which I like. It is a potentially great way to cover duller moments of the race without resorting to James Allen&#8217;s trick, &quot;let&#8217;s listen to the engine [while I think of something to say]&quot;.</p>
<p>Unfortunately Brundle doesn&#8217;t seem to know how to deal with Legard&#8217;s conversational style. He seems not to know how to respond to Legard, often choosing not to respond at all.</p>
<p>A typical example of this happened during the German Grand Prix, when Brundle responded unneccessarily sarcastically towards Legard&#8217;s inquisitiveness over Brundle&#8217;s statement that it would be a shame to for refuelling to be banned. It was almost as though he felt threatened that his viewpoint was being questioned. Speaking personally, I disagree with Brundle&#8217;s point of view (strategy plays a role, but if you allow it to dominate is just replaces racing with mathematics), and the rude way he expressed it totally alienated me.</p>
<p>Sometimes listening to Brundle you think he deliberately sets out for a scrap. Maybe it is his way of spicing it up by playing devil&#8217;s advocate. But I get the feeling that being combative is the only way he knows how to operate. He did, after all, make his name by constantly correcting Murray Walker, and later James Allen. He never stops &quot;correcting&quot; people. You almost get the sense that, given the chance, he would &quot;correct&quot; Michael Schumacher on the subject of being a seven times World Champion.</p>
<p>It probably doesn&#8217;t help that he is now working with a commentator who <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> constantly need to be corrected, which means he now has to adapt his style to that of a colour commentator rather than encroaching on the main commentator&#8217;s role as he has always done before. This is new territory for Brundle, and I don&#8217;t think he is coping well.</p>
<p>Some people suggest that you could solve this problem by making Martin Brundle the main commentator. It might be worth experimenting with, but I can easily see Brundle&#8217;s ego soon dominating the entire show if he was to be given that role.</p>
<p>I have to admit that sometimes I wonder now if I would miss Martin Brundle. I spent most of last year listening to Radio 5 Live, sans-Brundle, and it didn&#8217;t affect my enjoyment of the races. Given that he is almost certainly the most expensive person on BBC F1 team, I wonder if it is not time for him to be given another role, because for me he is probably the least value for money.</p>
<p>He does have a good turn of phrase, and is an engaging talker on F1, so I wouldn&#8217;t like to see him go for good. Perhaps he could be given a smaller role such as that of post-race analyst. The colour commentator role can go to someone with more recent experience of an F1 car such as Anthony Davidson, because Brundle increasingly seems at a loss to explain some of the technical elements of team radio conversations.</p>
<p>And can someone explain to me why Brundle hasn&#8217;t been taken aside and politely asked to pronounce Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s name correctly? He must be the only person in the world who appears to mistake this ace F1 driver for some kind of telecommunications company, or a brand of bottle watter. Vett-tel? It&#8217;s &#8216;fettle&#8217;. Really, <em>really</em> annoying.</p>

<p>The BBC have a lot of great points to their coverage, but this is possibly the greatest innovation they have come up with. For an hour or so after the BBC One programme has finished, they continue analysing the race on the Red Button. This is something that simply would never have happened on ITV, so this is another great reason why the BBC is the right home for F1.</p>
<p>ITV&#8217;s post-race programme always felt like a rush job. The BBC&#8217;s probably would too if I stopped watching when BBC One stopped broadcasting it. But that extra hour feels just right. An extra hour to immerse myself in F1 news, interviews, analysis, footage, insight and knowledge. And there are a few viewer questions thrown in for good measure. Great stuff.</p>
<h3>Red Button extras</h3>
<p>Here is something else that you couldn&#8217;t have got on ITV &#8212; extra material on the red button. There are the rolling highlights, which I have personally never used and don&#8217;t really see the point of. It seems like a waste of a stream to me, but then again the BBC probably don&#8217;t have anything else to put on this stream (I understand that they are not allowed to broadcast the official timing screens).</p>
<p>But the on-board channel is a great addition to the coverage. I always have my laptop open with the on-board stream running. For one thing, it often catches incidents that are missed by the World Feed. It is notable that a lot of the BBC&#8217;s post-race analysis consists of footage from this channel &#8212; it is valuable stuff. During the German GP, they even interrupted the World Feed on BBC One to show a replay from the on-board channel! It is also interesting to watch the on-board channel during lulls in the race. I&#8217;m sure it will come in handy for Valencia.</p>
<p>The BBC also provide a handful of alternative audio options, though I never make use of them. I like Jonathan Legard and Martin Brundle is still interesting to listen to even if he grates more these days. But for those who haven&#8217;t taken to Legard, it is no surprise that the Radio 5 Live commentary option with David Croft and Anthony Davidson seems to have gone down a storm.</p>
<p>CBBC commentary seems less popular. I wonder if it is used very often. I can&#8217;t imagine I would have used it as a child. It&#8217;s like Newsround. No-one ever watches it because if you&#8217;re too young to be interested in the news, you simply don&#8217;t watch it. But if you&#8217;re old enough to be interested in the news, you watch the proper news, not the kiddy patronising version. CBBC commentary seems like a waste of an audio stream to me.</p>
<h3>Pit lane reports</h3>
<p>There are some very noticeable changes in the way the BBC deal with reports from the pitlane as opposed to ITV. On ITV, whenever there was a pitstop they would throw to Ted Kravitz who would then commentate on it. It wasn&#8217;t good. Usually he would just say, &quot;yes, the fuel hose is in. And they have put new tyres on. And he&#8217;s away, good stop!&quot; It felt pointless, although I guess it punctuated the commentary in a way. But I prefer it when Legard and Brundle commentate on pitstops, and for Ted Kravitz to be used when something genuinely interesting happens in the pitlane.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Lee McKenzie is doing a fine job for her first season in F1 full time. She has plenty of experience in motorsport, so there are no real issues with her there. There have been one or two hairy interviews, particularly when she clearly got at Lewis Hamilton who responded tersely after being asked how it felt to be lapped by Button. But in a way that revealed a lot about Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s mindset.</p>
<p>In fact, Lee McKenzie seems quite good at that. Rubens Barrichello completely opened up in an unprecedented way after the German Grand Prix, all as a result of a simple but carefully-worded question: &quot;It was going so well, what went wrong?&quot; You could argue that it was never really going well for Barrichello, but the question obviously confirmed in Barrichello&#8217;s mind that he was on for a good result, hence his amazing rant.</p>
<p>On ITV, Louise Goodman often got some very interesting quotes out of drivers, but normally of the post-watershed variety. Not good when Webber is talking about kids fucking it up on breakfast television.</p>
<p>Louise Goodman was certainly good at finding drivers very quickly after they had retired. At the start of the season, it was noted by some that Lee McKenzie appeared to be much slower at tracking down the drivers. It transpires that the BBC are choosing to pre-record these interviews, probably to save money.</p>
<p>I also wonder if there is a different approach among F1 journalists in general this year. For the first time, drivers are mandated to conduct interviews after they have retired. Perhaps the BBC are going for the safe option, remaining in the designated area for a 100% chance of getting an interview, albeit one that is slightly late, rather than taking a gamble by going on a hunt to get a quicker interview at the risk of missing the driver completely.</p>
<p>It is noticeable that Lee McKenzie isn&#8217;t getting much airtime during the races though. This is probably because there are very few retirements in F1 these days. Given now that Ted Kravitz doesn&#8217;t have to do the whole &quot;they&#8217;re putting fuel in his car!!!&quot; schtick, I wonder if there is really a need for there to be two pitlane reporters. I wouldn&#8217;t know, but it seems as though they are doing less work than they did on ITV.</p>
<p>Something I would like to see from the pitlane reporters is more input in terms of analysing strategy. ITV were always good at this, because James Allen is a genius at working out strategies. Even if he wasn&#8217;t a great main commentator, he was always excellent as a pitlane reporter, and always had the edge when it came to reading the strategic elements of the race.</p>
<p>But reading strategy now appears to be the biggest weakness of the BBC&#8217;s coverage. I would like to see Ted Kravitz try and think about strategy more. Or, if Ted is not up to the task, bring James Allen on board as a strategy analyst.</p>
