There is not much to say after the Chinese Grand Prix. The race itself was spectacularly dull and controversy-free. (And I have left it my customary few hours to see if the stewards get involved — they haven’t.) It’s good not to have controversy, but we have become so used to it that it feels a bit empty to come away from a race with absolutely nothing to talk about!

What we can say though is that we are heading towards the final race of the season with Lewis Hamilton having slightly extended his lead. Ominously, that is exactly the same lead he had going into the final race last year — 7 points. On paper, it should be easy enough for him to simply finish 4th or above so that he can wrap up the title. But what if he gets the jitters?

Today we saw the calmer, more conservative Hamilton. It’s true that he didn’t ever have to go on the attack. Unlike in Fuji, he got a fine start. Besides, his advantage over Ferrari at Shanghai has been clear to see all weekend. So there was no reason for Hamilton to risk it and in the end he cruised to an easy victory with a 15 second margin.

That advantage might not exist in Brazil. Ferrari have won the previous two races at Interlagos, and Felipe Massa in particular tends to perform well on his home patch. What Hamilton needs to do is make sure he doesn’t get spooked if Ferrari perform well like they did last year.

There is a slight debate surrounding Ferrari’s team orders. Kimi Räikkönen had the advantage over Massa for the whole race, but mysteriously slowed down for a few laps towards the end of the race to let Massa pass before returning to his normal pace. The Finn knowingly chuckled when asked about it during the press conference.

The hysteria surrounding team orders is nonsensical. All teams use team orders of some sort, it is a normal part of motor racing and has been for decades. The only reason team orders got a bad name was because of the botched switchover at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, which was quite rightly criticised. But that incident was so offensive because it took the supporters for mugs. Supporters know what was going on today though, and it was reasonable for Ferrari to ask Räikkönen to move over, allowing Massa to score two extra points which could come in very handy.

Meanwhile, outside bet Robert Kubica has dropped out of the championship hunt. I feel that he has been the best driver this season and he certainly deserves to win the title one day. I do hope he finds himself in a good enough car in the near future. In the meantime, it was always slightly surreal that Kubica was so close to the championship leaders for so long, and it must be admitted that he has done so mainly by hoovering up the points fumbled by McLaren and Ferrari rather than outright pace.

Kubica’s weekend got off to a bad start when he only managed to qualify 12th. As always, Kubica fought a strong race, but could only manage 6th just behind his team mate Nick Heidfeld. One day.

Unfortunately, there are almost no other talking points following today’s race. It wasn’t really worth the 7am start. That’s tilkedromes for ya.

Well thankfully the predicted procession around the streets of Singapore failed to come and instead we were treated to an action-packed race. Okay, so it needed a couple of crashes, safety car periods and another calamitous weekend from Ferrari to make it so, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I’m just glad it wasn’t a bore of Valencia-sized proportions.

First of all, you really have to take your hat off to Fernando Alonso. For me, he has been one of the best drivers of the season and if anyone else deserved a win it was him. He’s been fighting hard all season in a car that has seldom been capable of keeping up with the front runners.

Alonso’s weekend got off to the worst possible start when he had a “fuel supply” issue (damn credit crunch) during qualifying, leaving him a poor 15th on the grid. This forced Renault to be inventive with their strategy, and they took a risk by having him start the race with a very light fuel load, pitting early and hoping for the Safety Car to come out. After his pitstop, Alonso was actually in last place.

But with this strategy Renault had struck gold. Alonso was the only person to have made his pitstop before the Safety Car came out and was able to move up the field slowly but surely until he was leading the race. From there, he looked awesome. He needed a shovelful of luck, but that shouldn’t detract from what was a great drive. I, for one, was delighted to see Alonso — whom I regard as the best driver on the grid — back on the top step of the podium.

Ironically, the Safety Car that Alonso needed was brought out by his team-mate Nelsinho Piquet’s crash. Bring those tin foil hats out of the cupboard!

Another man who benefited greatly from the situation was Nico Rosberg. He was running out of fuel when the Safety Car came out, so had to make a pitstop while the pitlane was closed. He got a 10 second stop–go penalty for that, but Rosberg was in the unique position of leading the race at the time, enabling him to pull out an enormous lead. As such, he actually lost very little in the way of track position, coming out in 3rd after his penalty.

Before the Safety Car came out, Rosberg was 10th. So by making an illegal pitstop, Rosberg still gained a lot despite the penalty. Yet another reason why the current Safety Car rules are ridiculous.

Hats off to Rosberg though. He did a stunning job to build up that gap and he kept his head to complete a career-best 2nd place finish. Apparently it’s all down to Frank Williams’s lucky tartan trousers.

Robert Kubica had no such luck. He went round behind the Safety Car for an extra lap before making his pitstop, so he came out in traffic. His stop–go penalty really hurt him and he was never in contention again. I think that’s the second time this season Kubica has been seriously disadvantaged by this disgrace of a rule.

Ferrari didn’t need Safety Car shenanigans to cause their race-ending pitstop disasters. Ferrari’s semi-automatic traffic light system that was brought under the spotlight in Valencia completely failed in Singapore.

A human was operating the lights, but goodness knows what he was thinking when he switched the lights to green as the fuel hose was nowhere near being released. Felipe Massa correctly read the green light that appeared, but took the fuel hose with him all the way down the pitlane — very reminiscent of the incident involving Christijan Albers at the 2007 French Grand Prix. The Ferrari mechanics sprinted down to the end of the pitlane to remove the fuel hose (with much difficulty) and Massa was able to carry on, but his race was over.

Massa had looked in control of the race. And his qualifying performance on Saturday was mesmerising, as he took pole by six tenths. But he scored no points in Singapore. This has enabled Hamilton (who was slightly, but not greatly, disadvantaged by the Safety Car situation) to regain the momentum coming into the final three races of the season.

It was, in fact, a truly disastrous race for Ferrari. They have had a few awful races this year. To compound Massa’s pitlane problem, Kimi Räikkönen had another one of his strange moments where he has fallen asleep, and grabbed some air at the controversial kerbs at turn 10, ploughing straight into the wall.

Red Bull are beginning to look like they are gaining some momentum again. They arrived in Singapore with some noticeable new aerodynamic pieces and they were performing pretty well during the race. Webber looked like he was going to score some points until he had a gearbox failure. David Coulthard, meanwhile, was running 3rd at one point before coming home in 7th following a minor pitlane snafu when the lollipop was raised too early, which was handled much better than Ferrari’s similar incident.

All-in-all, the first-ever night race must be hailed as a great success. It looked better on television than I expected. The circuit was quite fun with a couple of booby traps catching the drivers out, which is what we want to be honest. There was some overtaking, which is much more than can be said for Valencia. And it looked as though the crowds were huge, and they certainly seemed very enthusiastic.

I have to admit I was rather sceptical about night races beforehand, but this worked really well and there were no real disasters. The only real problem was the botched pitlane entry and exit designs, but that would have happened whether it was night time or day time. I now wouldn’t mind seeing more night races in the future.

Now we have three final flyaway races to go, with a double-header in Japan and China coming up. I’m off to catch some zzzs in anticipation for the early morning starts.

This weekend’s European Grand Prix is held on a brand new circuit, the Valencia Street Circuit. The circuit has a contract for seven years, so we may as well try and get acquainted with it as best we can.

We won’t know exactly what to expect until the F1 cars arrive there. But for a street circuit it seems rather promising. For a street circuit, it is particularly fast. It is estimated that the F1 cars will reach 185mph at least four times during a fast lap. The top speed is estimated at an incredible 199mph, with an average speed of 140mph. Pretty quick for a street circuit.

The circuit is also said to be very smooth for a street circuit. In addition, the circuit is wide and has plenty of run-off area which should encourage overtaking. Alex Waters, who competes in Spanish Formula 3, said in the September 2008 edition of F1 Racing that there are three obvious overtaking spots. That is more than some circuits, like a certain other one in Spain. To demonstrate this, Waters reached as high as 6th position from a grid position of 18th before retiring. So the drivers should have no dodgy excuses for not being able to overtake!

I’m looking forward to this weekend’s sessions and the liveblogs that will take place throughout the weekend will be indispensable as we come to terms with the new environment.

I knew the streak of exciting races had to come to an end sooner or later, and sure enough it came to an end at Hockenheim. Or so I thought.

Then Timo Glock had a massive shunt that changed the race. Glock’s crash was quite worrying. The result of an apparent suspension failure on the kerb at turn 17, the impact was heavy and Glock appeared to be severely winded. Thankfully he seems to be okay, though he’ll be kept in hospital overnight as a precaution.

Inevitably the wreckage caused the Safety Car to come out and all the teams were ready in the pits. The cars all streamed in. All, that is, except for Lewis Hamilton. Whaaa?

Hamilton was looking supremely comfortable all race. He easily had the speed and the consistency to make everyone else on the circuit look silly. The Safety Car brought his lead down to almost zero. And to make matters worse, he still had to pit. Massa didn’t. Nor did Nelsinho Piquet.

While the Safety Car seemed to ruin Hamilton’s race, it played straight into the hands of Piquet’s one-stop strategy. Inevitably in a Safety Car period there are winners and losers, and a lot depends on whether Lady Luck is smiling on you. Piquet’s luck was certainly on his side.

But luck alone does not get anyone leading a grand prix. This was a strong message that Piquet is now upping his game. It’s the third race in a row where he has actually made Fernando Alonso look rather ordinary. I’m not saying that Piquet is better than Alonso by any stretch. But this is a far cry from the bumbling, nervy embarrassment that began this season. This was a lucky but assured drive to the front of the pack.

Meanwhile, McLaren were hoping that Hamilton was good enough to pull out enough of a lead to enable him to take a pitstop and rejoin in the lead. McLaren didn’t bank on the Safety Car staying out so long. Once Hamilton had pitted, Piquet had the lead. For a period of time, it looked as though Piquet might, outrageously, take a lucky win.

Hamilton actually came out of the pits way back in fourth, behind his team mate Heikki Kovalainen. Perhaps predictably, Kovalainen didn’t make it too difficult for Hamilton to overtake him. Hamilton let slip that team orders were at play, which was dangerous of him given the current paranoia about McLaren always receiving penalties for the slightest reason. Thankfully for McLaren, they got away with it — and fair enough too.

The next target for Hamilton was Massa. Hamilton was on fire on those soft tyres. Would Hamilton wear them out too quickly? He didn’t seem too concerned. It didn’t take long to reach Massa.

Hamilton was able to line Massa up to take advantage of Massa’s slipstream through the massive Parabolika corner (effectively a straight). Massa should have stayed on the inside to make it difficult for Hamilton to pass at the hairpin. Instead, Felipe Massa not only opened the door, but he threw out the welcome mat and offered him tea and biscuits. Massa realised what he had done and attempted to come back, but Massa only ended up compromising himself.

Hamilton had only one more car to take, and that was Piquet’s Renault. That was always going to be even easier than passing Massa. True enough, it turned out to be a near identical pass as the one on Massa — but this time Piquet didn’t fight back. The pair were rivals in GP2 a couple of years ago, but Hamilton looked like he was on another planet.

I don’t think anyone else in the field could have done it like Hamilton did today. For the second race in a row, he has left me as effusive and sycophantic as the media luvvies who sickened me last year. But you simply have to take your hat off to performances like this that simply make everyone else in the field look like complete amateurs.

The cliché is to call Hamilton Senna-esque. I don’t think it was a Senna-esque drive today. However, it very strongly reminded me of a Michael Schumacher drive. The way Hamilton coped with a very bad situation by simply outclassing everyone could have come straight out of the Red Baron’s textbook.

As for Ferrari, there is nothing else you can say — they are without a doubt on the back foot now. Their car wasn’t good enough around Hockenheim, particularly in sector 3. The next two circuits will probably suit the McLaren as well. The tight and twisty Hungaroring and the Valencia Street Circuit are ideal for a car that likes riding the kerbs and tight corners.

Ferrari’s car advantage is perhaps not so bad though. Kovalainen looks pretty equal with them, if not worse (though a special mention should be made for his amazing overtaking manoeuvre on Robert Kubica). Where Hamilton and McLaren have the real advantage is in the driving department. Hamilton is cutting out the mistakes and is on absolutely scintillating form at the moment.

Meanwhile, Ferrari’s drivers both look like real disappointments. Felipe Massa is not very good. This is no secret. Everyone but Felipe Massa and Nicolas Todt knows it. He is dire in the wet (five spins in Silverstone — a complete embarrassment) and no better than mediocre in the dry (a poor attempt at defending against Hamilton in Hockenheim).

Kimi Räikkönen, meanwhile, simply is not on the boil at the moment. He was ragged all weekend in Germany, seemingly never looking comfortable in the car. There was a period for a lap or so where he looked like he had the hunger as he overtook two cars quite impressively. But the result says it all. He qualified 6th, finished 6th and never looked in contention. No wonder it is rumoured that Räikkönen is fed up and wants to retire — you can see that he is not interested when he’s on the racetrack.

Ferrari must be wondering how it all went wrong. Räikkönen was meant to be the best driver in the field. Maybe a few years ago he was. In fact, last year he almost certainly was. Today he certainly is not. Massa, meanwhile, is nothing less than a complete joke. Ferrari probably have the best car and we don’t know it. How frustrating it must be for Ferrari just now to have two drivers who simply are not up to the job.

I’ll come straight out with it here: I don’t care where the British Grand Prix is held. I can well understand if people have a particular attachment to Silverstone. But I just don’t have it.

The thing is that, even though I am in Britain, I live a long way away from Silverstone. I don’t exactly live in the sticks, but the central belt of Scotland where I reside is hundreds of miles away from Silverstone. The British Grand Prix is not my grand prix. I’ve never been in a position to attend it. And I doubt I would be in the future. It simply involves too much upheaval.

Of course I would one day love to attend a Grand Prix and would pull out all the stops when I decide to do so. But would Silverstone be my first choice? Probably not. Travelling all the way to Silverstone would only be marginally more convenient than travelling to, say, Magny-Cours, Catalunya or Hockenheim.

Once I decide to spend such a significant amount of time travelling somewhere, I really may as well make a holiday of it or something rather than going along just to spend a blustery weekend in a crumbling, roofless Silverstone grandstand. It is notable that the one grand prix I have actually seriously considered attending is the Hungarian Grand Prix. I’ve never looked into travelling to Silverstone.

So my “home” grand prix means very little to me. When home is hundreds of miles away it ceases to have any meaning. My affinity with Silverstone is zilch. Of course I appreciate it as a circuit, just as I appreciate any other circuit. But I wouldn’t shed any more tears for the British Grand Prix’s loss than I would for the removal of, for instance, the Belgian Grand Prix.

As such, I can only shrug my shoulders for the prospect that the British Grand Prix is under serious threat. So I am not particularly bothered about the proposed move to Donington. I suspect most people are apprehensive about it because they suspect that Donington will never be ready in time for 2010 and therefore the announced move is little more than a proxy for the removal of the British GP.

Clearly Donington needs a lot of work to be brought up to the standards expected of a modern F1 circuit. But it is a nice circuit with plenty of history. People talk about Silverstone’s history as though it’s the only place that has history. But Donington has it as well.

People talk about Donington as though it is a pigsty. But in recent years it has been the venue for the British MotoGP. MotoGP is not Formula 1, of course, but it’s not that much smaller. Of course Donington needs work, but as I pointed out in my previous post so does Silverstone (certainly in the eyes of Bernie Ecclestone).

Access is also said to be a problem. But it handles MotoGP okay (though I’ve heard the traffic was pretty bad this year). It also plays host to the rather large Download music festival. And it’s not as though Silverstone has been free of traffic problems over the years.

There are many who also point out that Silverstone is by no means the F1 circuit with the worst facilities, with Interlagos frequently being cited as a terrible venue. However, this ignores the reality that Formula 1 simply needs a venue in South America even if that venue has to be a total dump. If F1 is to have any pretence of being a World Championship, it can’t afford to ignore this part of the world, especially as it has brought us so many great drivers over the decades. Europe, meanwhile, has grands prix falling out of its pockets. F1 can probably afford to lose the British Grand Prix. It certainly can’t afford to lose the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Where the Donington story gets fishy is the idea that the upgrades will be finished within two years. And that £100 million will somehow be raised by a fan-powered debenture scheme. Then again, you could just as easily ask where Silverstone would get the money it needs to make its improvements.

I think the harsh reality is that Britain now has no venue that is capable of holding an F1 grand prix. That certainly seems to be the view of Bernie Ecclestone. If the best hope of retaining the British Grand Prix is to throw our weight behind Donington, it might be the only way to go. Whether fans will feel this way to the extent of £100 million collectively remains to be seen.
