			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Let me start off by pointing out that I would really like to see Paul di Resta do well in F1. It is always good to see fresh blood and I am a big fan of his cousin, Dario Franchitti.</p>
<p>But I have found Paul di Resta&#8217;s route into F1 curious. Why does Paul di Resta deserve to have a race seat when, for instance, Daniel Ricciardo doesn&#8217;t? Why, indeed, should he get the nod for a Force India race drive over the team&#8217;s reserve driver, Nico Hülkenberg who secured a pole position last year?</p>
<h3>Unconventional background</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta is coming into F1 having been in DTM for the past four years. There is no doubt he is a great racer &#8212; fools don&#8217;t win the DTM championship. But DTM is not known for ushering stars of the future into F1.</p>
<p>It is more well-known as a home for former F1 racers whose career is on the wane (Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard), former stars of the future who never quite made it into F1 (Gary Paffett) and drivers that specialise in racing touring cars.</p>
<p>One driver who has made the step from DTM to F1 is Christijan Albers. His F1 career lasted for two and a half years, largely without success. He was dropped by Spyker midway through 2007 after escaping from the pitlane with his fuel hose still attached proved to be a gaffe too far.</p>
<h3>Euro Series success</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta first attracted the attention of F1 bosses as a result of the success of another driver. Back in 2006, Paul di Resta competed for the Formula 3 Euroseries championship against Sebastian Vettel. Di Resta won.</p>
<p>But it was Vettel who managed to make the step up to Formula 1 the following season. Having already impressed as BMW&#8217;s third driver, and he stepped in for one race to deputise for Robert Kubica following the Pole&#8217;s huge crash in Canada. Later that year, he got a race drive for Toro Rosso, and it wasn&#8217;t long before he was being hailed as an &#8220;inevitable future world champion&#8221;.</p>
<p>As big wigs looked to Vettel&#8217;s route to F1, it was noticed by Mercedes bosses that he was beaten in F3 Euro Series by Paul di Resta. Mercedes resolved to line him up for a race seat, initially at McLaren. In the meantime, di Resta raced for Mercedes in DTM.</p>
<p>Attention switched to getting him a race seat at Force India in 2009. But progress was slow again as they opted to retain their existing lineup of Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella. Meanwhile, since buying the Brawn team, Mercedes focus has switched to having a German-only driver line-up.</p>
<p>In the run-up to 2010 the Paul di Resta hype was curiously quiet as Force India secured the services of Vitantonio Liuzzi instead. But as the season got going, it became increasingly clear that Force India wanted him to race in 2011.</p>
<p>But on what basis?</p>
<h3>Protracted junior career</h3>
<p>Paul di Resta&#8217;s protracted junior career may have set back his F1 career overall. Any comparisons with Sebastian Vettel based on F3 performances from five years ago are now irrelevant. Vettel now has a wealth of F1 experience that di Resta lacks.</p>
<p>At 24, Paul di Resta is relatively old for an F1 rookie these days. All of F1&#8242;s most successful drivers in recent years started their careers much earlier. Of the recent world champions, Sebastian Vettel&#8217;s first race was as a 19-year-old, as was Fernando Alonso&#8217;s. Jenson Button was 20, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher were 22. Kimi Räikkönen was 21, having made the leap directly from Formula Renault UK!</p>
<p>Paul di Resta is by no means too old to become an F1 rookie. But having a long &#8212; or indeed a successful &#8212; career in junior categories has not been shown to help create a great F1 driver.</p>
<p>All of the champions of the last decade progressed rapidly through the junior ranks. Vettel and Button made the leap straight from Formula 3. Hamilton efficiently strode up the ladder virtually one season at a time. Alonso had one season the Euro Open by Nissan (which today is World Series by Renault), and one season of Formula 3000 to his name.</p>
<p>Perhaps encouragingly for di Resta, Michael Schumacher for one raced more than just single-seaters before entering F1. Schumacher joined F1 after competing in the World Sportscar Championship. But he did not hang around there for four seasons, as di Resta has done in the DTM.</p>
<h3>Time will tell</h3>
<p>It remains to be seen whether or not Paul di Resta&#8217;s relatively unconventional route into F1 will pay off. There is, of course, no right or wrong way to go about a racing career. But I don&#8217;t see a great deal of evidence to suggest that di Resta will succeed in F1. I hope I&#8217;m wrong.</p>

<p>I don&#8217;t mind team orders in F1. We know they exist. F1 is a team sport, not just a contest between drivers. It is always important to bear that in mind.</p>
<p>But F1 is also a sport, and those involved should always remember that. Ferrari in particular should be sensitive to this matter, and instantly comparisons were drawn with the scandal of Austria 2002.</p>
<p>This was nothing like as bad as Austria 2002 &#8212; when the move was made at the very last corner, with Rubens Barrichello having dominated over his team mate Michael Schumacher all weekend. But the way it was executed still left a sour taste in the mouth.</p>
<p>Today is exactly one year on from Felipe Massa&#8217;s horrific accident in Hungary, and he was having a fantastic race in Germany. He found himself under intense pressure from Fernando Alonso for a period. But Alonso failed to capitalise on his chances, and Massa put the hammer down to extend the lead.</p>
<p>The way the team orders were executed after Massa had established his right to win the race was the problem. It insulted our intelligence.</p>
<p>I think most can understand why Alonso would be favoured for the Championship. But, as in Austria 2002, it is too early in the season to be switching drivers round. There is still half of the season to go, and anything can happen. (I am sure that if team orders were not in play in 1999, Eddie Irvine would have won the Drivers&#8217; Championship.)</p>
<p>The way Rob Smedley relayed his instructions to Felipe Massa left us in no doubt as to what was really going on. With that, he has left the door wide open for punishment.</p>
<p>Much of the post-race debate has focussed on the rules regarding team orders. My view on this is clear: there should be no rule on team orders. As David Coulthard consistently pointed out, there is no way to police it. F1 is a team sport, it always has been. There are team orders, there always have been, and there always will be.</p>
<p>The issue is not whether team orders should exist or whether they are legal or not. What is key, though, is that a team should always remember at the end of the day there are viewers out there upon whom F1 depends. As Fota and the like keep on telling us, it&#8217;s all about the show!</p>
<p>The problem was that Ferrari executed a team order in the most blatant way possible. Then they tried to deny that there were any team orders. In doing this, they treated the fans with complete contempt. They acted as though we are idiots. This is what has caused the outcry.</p>
<p>Ferrari have been fined $100,000 for their actions today, and the matter has been referred to the World Motor Sport Council. I think a fine alone is a fair enough punishment. The result should stand. It is not the switch that was offensive &#8212; it was the way they went about it.</p>
<p>The embarrassment Ferrari have caused themselves should be punishment enough. If they acted in a more noble and sporting way, then people would start taking them more seriously when they start talking about &#8220;manipulated&#8221; results and how &#8220;Formula 1 is not a sport anymore&#8221;.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Without doubt, the Canadian Grand Prix was a highly unusual and exciting race. It brought us a new, unfamiliar situation and it was fascinating to watch it unfold. The staggering figure of 65 on-track passes will count as among the very highest seen in a dry race in recent years.</p>
<p>It is therefore no surprise that the kneejerk calls to &#8220;<a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84659">learn from the Canada show</a>&#8221; have come thick and fast. In my view that is dangerous.</p>
<p>First of all, as I have pointed out before, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/18/bahrain-boring-blame-bernie-not-the-refuelling-ban/">the focus on &#8220;the show&#8221;</a> is vacuous, trite and antithetical to the idea of the sport. Of course F1 should be exciting. But what you can&#8217;t forget is that we love F1 already &#8212; because it already <em>is</em> exciting.</p>
<p>What we now risk &#8212; with this crazy obsession with &#8220;improving the show&#8221; &#8212; is future of F1 that is increasingly watered-down. F1 is becoming <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/06/29/is-it-time-to-tear-up-the-fia-rule-book/">too convoluted due to bizarre rules</a> that are tacked on bit-by-bit in a misguided and unnecessary attempt to engineer excitement. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfgRGW9Ghik">This is the stuff of bad game shows</a> or WWF or Nascar. We are talking about F1, the greatest sport in the world. It doesn&#8217;t <em>need</em> this.</p>
<p>I am particularly disappointed in <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84659">Mike Gascoyne&#8217;s bizarre call</a> to attempt to somehow incorporate the conditions that occurred in Canada into the tyre rules:</p>
<blockquote><p>If you were going to write the tyre rules for how you wanted races to be, they would be like Canada. You had changing strategies, overtaking and lots of excitement.</p>
<p>It was exactly what F1 needs, and it&#8217;s proved that the argument for one tyre being very marginable is very strong.</p></blockquote>
<p>This surely overlooks the key reasons behind why the Canadian Grand Prix was such a great spectacle. First of all there is the fact that it is an incredible circuit that brings us great, edge-of-your-seat races time and again, regardless of what the current rules are. Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a great circuit. Full stop.</p>
<p>Moreover, one of the features of the circuit that has emerged as a major factor over and over again is the fact that it is hard on tyres. I vividly remember the 2006 Canadian Grand Prix, where the tyres were degrading in such an odd way that the circuit was absolutely covered in marbles. I seem to recall David Coulthard describing those conditions as the worst dry-weather conditions he had ever raced in.</p>
<p>Then there is the fact that this is the first time Formula 1 has visited Montreal with the current slick tyres, and with the current restrictions on the numbers of sets of tyres teams can use, and there you have your recipe for the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Some of this cannot be replicated. Some of it already is. The rest is artificial interfering.</p>
<p>The call for the tyre supplier to provide the teams with increasingly marginal tyres goes against everything that F1 is supposed to be about &#8212; the best drivers using the best equipment. Artificially hobbling drivers is a fake approach to racing. More overtaking is meaningless if it isn&#8217;t real overtaking.</p>
<p>That is why <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/84712">Pirelli&#8217;s stated desire</a> to &#8220;have a Canadian GP every race&#8221; sends a shiver down my spine. I was hoping that the switch of tyre supplier would be the perfect opportunity to ditch the current tyre regulations, which are currently a mess from a sporting standpoint. Instead, it looks like the tyre rules are only going to become worse.</p>
<p>But most of all there is the issue that the unpredictable will soon enough become predictable. The way events unfolded in Canada caught the teams off guard. But the second time something like that happens, they will be much better prepared. The third time they will begin to set a routine in place. After a handful more occasions, they will know the drill down pat. All the unpredictability will be gone.</p>
<p><a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/18/bahrain-boring-blame-bernie-not-the-refuelling-ban/">This is what we saw with refuelling</a>. At first it was an interesting novelty, and it added an interesting strategy element. But by the end of the refuelling era, it was adding nothing to the show. Armed with 15 years&#8217; worth of data, and with the calculation powers of modern computers, the teams always knew what the optimum strategy was and employed it. The result was neutered racing, with the refuelling only adding an incentive for drivers to &#8220;overtake in the pitlane&#8221; and avoid on-track action.</p>
<p>The same would happen with tyres, as the teams gather data and become better prepared. They may say they want to improve the show. But they also want to win the race. It is a classic prisoners&#8217; dilemma &#8212; and, just as with refuelling, the teams will always try to win the race before thinking about the show.</p>
<p>It is worth considering that the reason the Canadian Grand Prix was so exciting was that the teams pushed too hard and ended up painting themselves into a corner. The Bahrain Grand Prix was so boring because the teams were far too conservative, fearful of overstepping the mark with the tyres and ending up in exactly the scenario that unfolded in Canada. The teams want to have their cake and eat it.</p>
<p>F1 teams are constantly looking for the boundaries of performance, and sometimes they go beyond those boundaries. When they do, they learn the lessons and adapt their approach for next time. No set of rules can affect this fundamental nature of the way teams behave.</p>
<p>What we <em>really</em> should take away from the Canadian Grand Prix is the joy of watching a great race. This is the sort of thing that should be celebrated. But there were great races in the past, and great races are caused by a variety of factors that cannot be pinned down.</p>
<p>Even if they were pinned down, knowing the factors would be a surefire way of ensuring boring races for the rest of the sport&#8217;s future. What makes F1 exciting is its inherent <em>unpredictability</em>. Trying to engineer unpredictability is surely an oxymoron.</p>
<p>This does mean that sometimes we endure the odd mediocre race. But since we follow a sport and not a show, we are all happy with that &#8212; aren&#8217;t we?&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ll be upfront here. While many like Williams, with their &#8220;plucky underdog&#8221; status and stridently independent approach, they have never been my among my favourite teams. To the extent that I have ever liked them, it has been as the anti-Ferrari. In other words, I like them about as much as I like McLaren, which is not very much &#8212; but hey, at least they can beat Ferrari.</p>
<p>Today, Williams can&#8217;t beat Ferrari, so I am rather indifferent about them. But at a time where the majority of the grid is made up of manufacturers &#8212; of cars and drinks &#8212; even I can see that there is something romantic about Williams. I think it would be good to see them at the front again.</p>
<p>But if I was a fan of the team, I would probably have well and truly lost patience by now. Every year the team says, &#8220;just wait &#8212; next year we&#8217;ll be back&#8221;. They spend all winter making positive noises. And then when it comes to the big day itself? They are even slower than they were before.</p>
<h3>One of the most successful teams in history</h3>
<p>When they last won a Constructors&#8217; Championship in 1997, Williams had won more of them than Ferrari. The record was staggering &#8212; nine Constructors&#8217; and seven Drivers&#8217; Championships in just 20 seasons. It was an utterly fearsome record.</p>
<p>At that stage, Williams had won races in all but two of its seasons &#8212; its very first in 1978, and a brief drought in 1988 when the team had to make do with inferior Judd engines after Honda jumped ship to McLaren. Even then, Nigel Mansell managed to wring a couple of second place finishes out of it, which is more than can be said for what came after 1997.</p>
<p>Once again, Williams was left in the lurch after the departure of the front-running engine manufacturer &#8212; this time Renault. To make matters worse, chief designer Adrian Newey left Williams to join McLaren. 1998 was a year of continuity for Williams, in all the wrong ways &#8212; using what were effectively year-old Renault engines and what some said was the 1997 chassis adapted for 1998 regulations.</p>
<p>In 1999 the team faced further difficulties with Alex Zanardi struggling to adapt to F1 after a successful time in ChampCars. While the wins dried up, this difficult spell was thankfully short lived, as in 2000 Williams forged a new partnership with BMW.</p>
<p>2000 was a learning year for all concerned, but successes came between 2001 and 2003, when Williams returned to winning ways. Williams were even strong title contenders in 2003, with four victories and nine podiums, Williams were a strong player in a tight three-way battle for the championship. As unlikely as it seems today, Juan Pablo Montoya was almost a World Champion!</p>
<h3>The slide from the top</h3>
<p>Unfortunately, things started to go pear-shaped again in 2004. A radical &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; concept brought little in the way of performance, and a more conventional design was brought out midway through the season. Montoya managed to win the final race in Brazil, but this race remains the team&#8217;s last taste of success.</p>
<p>Almost every year since then has seemingly seen Williams slip back a bit further, with the successes of the old days becoming an ever more distant memory. In the past five years, the team has had just four podium finishes. (Barring success in Turkey, that number will reduce to three this weekend!)</p>
<p>The brightest spot has been 2007, when a consistent set of results from Nico Rosberg helped the team bag a commendable fourth place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship (although that was after McLaren&#8217;s disqualification from the Championship). Apart from that, Williams have become a fixture at the back of the midfield &#8212; if you can call 8th out of 10 teams the &#8220;midfield&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Arrogant enough to believe their own excuses</h3>
<p>All the while, the excuses came, and fans were reassured: &#8220;next year is our year&#8221;. And next year comes and everything is all the same. Even if they trick people into thinking they&#8217;re fast by topping Friday Practice times, as Williams did in the first half of last season, people soon become wise to the fact that the car is not truly capable of it.</p>
<p>Before, there was always a positive spin to put on the situation. In 2009, Williams were bad &#8212; but at least Renault were worse and BMW weren&#8217;t much better. In 2008 people were more concerned with the alarming lack of pace in the Honda. 2006 was regarded as a tough deal for Williams, struggling with apparently sluggish and unreliable Cosworth engines.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s difficult to sugar-coat this year&#8217;s results in the same way. Although seventh doesn&#8217;t sound too bad, in effect the only teams that are behind them are either new (in the case of Virgin, Hispania and Lotus), facing hugely difficult political and financial constraints (Sauber) or have designed their own car for the first time (Toro Rosso). The shocker is that Williams are even being compared to teams like this.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Force India look a great deal more convincing, and Renault have again leapfrogged Williams and look like potential challengers to the top four teams. Indeed, Toro Rosso even look like they can realistically challenge Williams on the racetrack, particularly with a couple of feisty young drivers who are stepping up to the plate in style, particularly in the case of Jaime Alguersuari. Meanwhile, in China Nico Hülkenberg finished behind the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen.</p>
<p>It seems as though Williams allowed arrogance to get the better of them. It was always someone else&#8217;s fault. But increasingly, Williams have been made to eat humble pie.</p>
<p>Williams lay the blame for their early-2000s dip at the door of BMW. This ended in an acrimonious split in 2005, by which time each party had become convinced that the other side was not pulling its weight. But BMW did a pretty good job when they joined forces with Sauber, the disappointment of 2009 notwithstanding. Meanwhile, Williams became inert &#8212; a permanent fixture of the midfield.</p>
<p>Of course, if it wasn&#8217;t the engine&#8217;s fault, it was the drivers&#8217; fault. I was very interested to see <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=48469">Frank Williams admitting</a> that, in the light of Mark Webber&#8217;s recent successes, the team was too hasty to lay the blame at the door of its driver for their average spell in 2005 and 2006.</p>
<blockquote><p>When we had him obviously our car was a disappointment and we felt he was part of the problem. He probably wasn&#8217;t actually, with hindsight. The major point was that the car had problems.</p></blockquote>
<h3>Is there a way back?</h3>
<p>I think the Williams of today is a great deal less arrogant than the Williams of four or five years ago. But now the damage has been done. Is there a way back to the top for this proud team? 13 years on from its last Championship success, it&#8217;s difficult to see.</p>
<p>Already, there are rumours that Williams are unhappy with Cosworth (just like in 2006). Rumours are linking them to a partnership with Renault. Williams were linked to Renault last year too, and Frank Williams confessed that the prospect of &#8220;Williams Renault&#8221;, a reminder of the team&#8217;s most dominant period in the 1990s, was exciting.</p>
<p>Other rumours link Williams to a partnership with Porsche, with whom they have collaborated on kers. But the problems run deeper than the matter of their engine supply, as surely the lessons of the BMW split show.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorvee/3766039045/"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2494/3766039045_b53c1786ec.jpg" width="361" height="*" alt="Two proud championships" class="picture" /></a>Despite all of its history and past successes, Williams have tried and failed to recover for too long now. Sadly, it seems as though this year Williams have to make do with racing against the likes of Sauber, a zombie team that is on emergency life support, and Lotus, a team that didn&#8217;t even exist a few months ago.</p>
<p>I hope they can make it. I was privileged enough to be invited to the <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/10/my-trip-to-the-williams-f1-factory/">Williams factory and museum</a> last year. The museum is a wonderful place, brimful of some of the most successful grand prix cars there have ever been. The team only goes back just over 30 years, but it is such a huge part of Formula 1&#8242;s history. It would be such a shame if Williams were stuck at the back of the grid forever.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Up until yesterday, it had been a good year for F1. The spotlight has been on the racetrack rather than the stewards&#8217; room. It had even reached the stage where some people &#8212; including me &#8212; were <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/05/04/are-the-race-stewards-now-too-lenient/">asking if the stewards were being too lenient</a>. Overall, it seems as though the reign of Jean Todt is much less of a nanny state.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, yesterday in Monaco that changed &#8212; and for a typical reason. The rules were simply badly-worded and too ambiguous. And that left plenty of room for two interpretations of the situation.</p>
<p>It is not often you will find me on the side of Michael Schumacher &#8212; especially since, the longer he continues being average, the more I can say &#8220;<a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/23/mercedes-schumacher-move-crass-marketing-stunt/">I told you so</a>&#8220;. But I sympathise with him and the Mercedes team in this instance.</p>
<h3>What is the new rule for?</h3>
<p>The confusion arises from the introduction of a &#8220;Safety Car line&#8221; for the first time this year. This means that drivers can start overtaking more or less as soon as the Safety Car peels in, rather than having to wait until passing the start line.</p>
<p>I think this has been a slightly under-advertised rule change. I first learnt about it during the Chinese Grand Prix when cars were passing each other into the final corner of the lap during a race restart. So the explanation for the introduction of the Safety Car line is unclear to me.</p>
<p>I assume the idea is just to get the race back under way again as quickly as possible. In that case the idea gets my approval, even though I liked the idea that there was skill involved in timing your restart perfectly for the start / finish line. I remember particularly <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJK8z4HktGI">Fernando Alonso really showing up Jenson Button</a> at a restart during the 2006 Australian Grand Prix &#8212; still one of my favourite Alonso moments.</p>
<p>What a good idea, too, it would have been if this rule had been brought in as a result of last year&#8217;s Australian Grand Prix finishing behind the Safety Car. Allowing the drivers to race towards the finish line, rather than form an orderly queue towards it, would be a good way of maintaining the excitement of a motor race until the end, rather than allowing it to fizzle out like Australia 2009.</p>
<p>It seems as though article 40.13 is specifically designed to prohibit this though. I would be interested to learn of the rationale for this. It seems to me that it would be a particularly good idea to use a device like the Safety Car line <em>only</em> on the final lap &#8212; not on every lap <em>except</em> the final lap!</p>
<h3>The return of Formula None</h3>
<p>I keep coming back to the concept of <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2008/10/12/welcome-to-formula-none-where-racing-is-illegal/">Formula None</a>. This is the curious phenomenon whereby the powers-that-be in F1 decide to outlaw anything that comes dangerously close to becoming <em>motor racing</em>.</p>
<p>Michael Schumacher&#8217;s move on Fernando Alonso was an incredible piece of opportunistic driving. It brought an exciting twist to the final lap. Then again, it becomes less special when you realise that Alonso wasn&#8217;t even thinking that he would have to defend.</p>
<p>I do find it a shame that, in a race which saw <em>no position changes whatsoever</em> in the final 48 laps, the one successful overtaking manoeuvre has been deemed to be illegal &#8212; and for slightly unclear reasons.</p>
<h3>Differing interpretations of article 40.13</h3>
<p>The contentious rule, <a href="http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/65EE8F15945D0941C12576C7005308AE/$FILE/1-2010%20SPORTING%20REGULATIONS%2010-02-2010.pdf">Article 40.13 of the Sporting Regulations</a>, reads as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>If the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking.</p></blockquote>
<p>Looking at the wording of this rule, it is in fact little surprise that it has caused confusion, since it is so badly worded. For one thing, it talks about something that should happen before the end of the race <strong>if a particular state is true at the end of the race</strong>.</p>
<p>You may safely assume that a race will end under &#8220;Safety Car deployed&#8221; conditions if the Safety Car is on track for the final lap. But you nevertheless need time-travel skills from the top drawer in order to carry out the instructions in the sequence that the FIA regulations request.</p>
<p>I admit that is a pedantic point. The real issue is in the definition of &#8220;Safety Car deployed&#8221;. It is clear now that the rules say that Safety Car conditions effectively end when your car passes the Safety Car line on the lap in which the Safety Car enters the pits. For some reason &#8212; unexplained &#8212; this is seemingly different on the final lap.</p>
<p>We must now turn to whether &#8212; theoretically &#8212; the 79th lap of this 78 lap race would have seen the Safety Car continue on the track rather than peel into the pits. This is key to understanding whether or not the race finished under Safety Car conditions.</p>
<p>It seems to me as though a message on the timing screens declaring that the Safety Car will pit in this lap, that could seal the deal. However, this may just be a procedural message, notifying teams and television viewers that the Safety Car will pit, even though Safety Car conditions will not technically end.</p>
<p>Perhaps, then, the &#8220;Track clear&#8221; message will underline the idea that our theoretical 79th lap would run under green flag conditions, and not Safety Car conditions.</p>
<p>If after that there was a shred of doubt, turn your eyes to the marshal posts, where you see a marshal merrily waving a green flag, just next to a big green flashing light (which is operated by Race Control). Surely a green flag always, always, means &#8220;racing&#8221;.</p>
<p>To me, it is absurd to throw out green flags, and yet prohibit overtaking. Even from a safety point of view, it is contradictory to what drivers are surely always told. Green means you can race safely; yellows mean you must slow down and not overtake. Apparently now green means &#8220;cruise to the finish line and don&#8217;t overtake &#8212; but only if you&#8217;re on the last lap, otherwise you can race safely.&#8221;</p>
<p>Are the green flags just for show? Surely if the intention of article 40.13 is to prevent racing in the last few hundred yards of a race just after the Safety Car has pulled in to the pits, the flag should still be yellow.</p>

<p>Looking back to that last Safety Car finish in Australia last year, you can clearly see marshals holding out &#8220;SC&#8221; boards and waving yellow flags as Jenson Button cruises his way towards the finish line. So why has the procedure been confusingly changed this season?</p>
<h3>The decision was far from clear-cut</h3>
<p>In many senses then, Mercedes and Michael Schumacher has a pretty strong case for claiming that racing conditions &#8212; &#8220;green flag&#8221; conditions &#8212; had resumed.</p>
<p>It seems as though their interpretation of the rule was unique. Certainly, Fernando Alonso had been told by Ferrari not to race. Lewis Hamilton was so surprised at Schumacher&#8217;s move that he went on the radio to enquire about it.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/andrewbenson/2010/05/why_schumacher_broke_the_rules.html">Andrew Benson</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>This interpretation was shared by all the team managers bar that of Mercedes &#8211; I understand that upon seeing Schumacher&#8217;s move every single one of them got in touch with race director Charlie Whiting to say it was not allowed.</p></blockquote>
<p>But the teams appear to sympathise with the Mercedes team&#8217;s point regarding green flags, with <a href="http://twitter.com/legardj/status/14115166581">Jonathan Legard reporting</a> that Mercedes have &#8220;support from other teams&#8221; on this issue, and that the procedure may be reviewed.</p>
<p>Some have tried to suggest that the rule is clear. In fact, it is not clear at all, particularly when the procedure &#8212; to throw out false green flags &#8212; is so confusing.</p>
<p>The fact that it took the stewards approximately <em>two and a half hours</em> to announce their decision denotes that the decision was far from clear-cut. It seems as though there has been a major cock-up in the FIA&#8217;s implementation of this new Safety Car system. As they might say in the areas surrounding Jean Todt&#8217;s office in Place de la Concorde, <em>plus ça change&#8230;</em></p>

<h3>The season will be the most exciting ever, but the title of the DVD will make it sound like a wet Wednesday</h3>

The title of the official Formula 1 season review DVD was &#8220;Once Again&#8221;, making it sound like your drunk uncle has just wet himself for the umpteenth time.</p>
<p>In 2007, after a tense season-long battle between McLaren team-mates Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Räikkönen amazed the world by snatching the title from both of them in the final race of the season, overcoming a 17 point deficit with two races to go. The DVD was called &#8220;Kimi made it at last&#8221;, as though he had just come home late from a heavy night.</p>
<p>In 2008 Lewis Hamilton took the Championship in heart attack-inducing style on the last corner of the last lap of the last race. The DVD was called &#8220;Luck does not come into it&#8221;, which I <em>still</em> haven&#8217;t worked out the meaning of.</p>
<p>And the DVD really sold the 2009 season well by calling it &#8220;Not in a hurry&#8230;&#8221;, as if Jenson Button did not have a record-breaking winning streak at the start of the season.</p>
<p>Even if the Championship showdown is host to the first ever alien visit to this planet and is settled with a massive 200mph laser gun fight involving seventeen drivers from the planet Q&#8217;txxp&#8217;he, it wouldn&#8217;t surprise me if the DVD was given some madly dull title like, &#8220;I&#8217;d rather be watching paint dry&#8221;, &#8220;Isn&#8217;t Corrie on the other side?&#8221;, or &#8220;I&#8217;d stick with watching lawn bowls if I were you&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Confectionery diffuser face-off</h3>
<p>2009 was the year of the Double Decker diffusers. The 2010 pre-season testing period has seen a similar curiosity surrounding the rear end of F1 cars, with teams being notably coy about showing off their behinds.</p>
<p>The concept has now moved way beyond Double Decker diffusers. Among the new types of diffuser will be Red Bull&#8217;s Drifter diffuser, McLaren&#8217;s Mars Bar diffuser, Toro Rosso&#8217;s Curly Wurly diffuser and USF1&#8242;s Snickers diffuser. However, once again, Ross Brawn will find the upper hand when he reveals Mercedes&#8217;s Boost diffuser.</p>
<h3>FOM will fail to improve television coverage</h3>
<p>Although Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s FOM is supposedly covering the world&#8217;s most technologically advanced sport, the television pictures will still resemble a smudgy YouTube video. Bernie Ecclestone will insist that there is no need for HD coverage because, &#8220;my IT guy told me he swears by his old CRT television&#8221;.</p>

<p>Despite the decision to give HD the cold shoulder, FOM will stick with their existing on-screen graphics, which are so small that they are actually bloody impossible to read on any 4:3 display. They may be declaring the start of World War III on those captions for all I know.</p>
<h3>Intense McLaren Championship rivalry</h3>
<p>The title will come down to the wire in Abu Dhabi, with the main protagonists being McLaren team mates Hamilton and Button.</p>
<p>Towards the end of the race, John Button will think he has the upper hand by unleashing his killer move &#8211; undoing the last button on his shirt. Little will he anticipate that Anthony Hamilton will win the Championship by staring even more intensely.</p>
<h3>Michael Schumacher will be the world&#8217;s most superstitious man</h3>
<p>Following on from the revelation that Michael Schumacher has a mad <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns22036.html">superstition for odd numbers</a>, the German will reveal a litany of hitherto unknown superstitions. Among these will be an insistence that his team mate runs with an inferior set-up because &#8220;it makes me feel a bit better about my car&#8221;.</p>
<p>He will also reveal that he has a special form of OCD that means he just has to brake-test any drivers that are behind him, and cannot stop himself from driving straight into anyone who has just overtaken him. He also has a strong superstition for getting to choose his own parking space, and will park his Mercedes car in Race Control, where he can literally control the race by tampering with the timing system.</p>
<p>No-one will think to point any of this out, because nothing is allowed to get in the way of Princess Michelle&#8217;s Fairy Tale Comeback.</p>
<h3>Cosmopolitan Valencia will continue grid boy tradition</h3>
<p>Valencia&#8217;s tradition of having grid boys in addition to grid girls at the European Grand Prix will continue. Coincidentally, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/flav.jpg">Flavio Briatore will make his F1 comeback</a> at the very same race.</p>
<h3>New teams to struggle</h3>

<p>New teams will be unable to shake off speculation surrounding their ability to see out the season. While the early focus will be on USF1 and Campos, the spotlight will soon switch to Virgin Racing.</p>
<p>Suspicions will be raised mid-season when the Virgin team mysteriously re-brands with a green livery and makes a formal application to change its name to &#8216;Zavvi&#8217;. A few months later, the team will run out of money and close down, but not before a special fixtures and fittings sale where fans will have the opportunity to buy the screws that once held the car together.</p>
<h3>The bearded beggar who appears at races is not homeless</h3>
<p>Having made a tactical error by trying to get a drive at Mercedes only for some seven time World Champion or other to get in the way, Nick Heidfeld will begin the 2010 season without a job. He will resort to sleeping on the floor in the paddock and begging.</p>
<p>If you see a suspicious-looking bearded man in the paddock, it is probably Mr Heidfeld, the world&#8217;s greatest ever second place finisher. Although he might speak as though he is slightly drunk, he is not homeless and is perfectly harmless.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Perhaps the worst-kept secret in F1 this season (apart from Alonso&#8217;s move to Ferrari) has been that Rubens Barrichello and Nico Hülkenberg will be driving for Williams in 2010. <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=47360&#038;PO=47360">Today it was finally announced</a>.</p>
<p>Historically, Williams has been a team that has been all too happy to dispense with even their best drivers. The fact that they held on to Nico Rosberg for four seasons is possibly a sign that they have learnt their lesson &#8212; that exchanging World Champions for the likes of Heinz-Harald Frentzen or Ralf Schumacher is not a championship-winning approach.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/31/the-future-of-toyota-in-f1/">Joe Saward has speculated</a> that Williams are not too jazzed about Nico Rosberg, which is why they have no problems letting him go (presumably to Brawn). This is strange if you ask me, because 2009 has been the season when I was finally convinced that Nico Rosberg has some talent. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/02/2009-mid-season-driver-rankings-part-2/">In my mid-season review</a> I ranked Rosberg in 5th, and I doubt he&#8217;ll be much lower in my end-of-season rankings.</p>
<p>But the decision to partner their protégé Nico Hülkenberg, who Williams have been grooming for the past few years, with Rubens Barrichello looks like a very mature move. I would say that this partnership is possibly stronger than any they have had since the mid-1990s.</p>
<p>For a few years now, Nico Hülkenberg has been a youngster to watch. He exploded into the international motorsport scene when he dominated the 2006&#8211;2007 A1GP season. He attended all but one event for A1 Team Germany and scored 14 podiums out of 20 starts, effectively clinching the title for Germany. (I wonder if he ever received his prize money for that season&#8230;)</p>
<p>He then spent two seasons in Formula 3 Euroseries. He finished 3rd in his first season. But although he clinched the title in his second attempt, I would have argued that he did not need another F3 season to justify a presence in GP2.</p>
<p>When he finally made the step to GP2, he impressively won the title at his first attempt. In the process, he beat several more experienced drivers including two who have already made the move to F1 &#8212; Romain Grosjean and Kamui Kobayashi.</p>
<p>We have seen too many times that success in lower formulae is no guarantee of success in F1. No Formula 3000 Champion ever went on to become an F1 champion (although Lewis Hamilton did become a GP2 Champion on his way to F1). I do, however, feel that Hülkenberg is a seriously exciting talent.</p>
<p>By pairing him up with Rubens Barrichello, Williams have ensured that he will have every opportunity to succeed. In essence, they have given this hugely promising rookie the best mentor in the world in the shape of the most experienced F1 driver of all time, Rubens Barrichello.</p>
<p>It is no secret that Jenson Button owed a lot to Barrichello&#8217;s set-up data this season. The Brazilian&#8217;s experience makes him an expert at setting up the car. He can now pass his wisdom on to a true rookie &#8212; one who will surely truly appreciate the help.</p>
<p>I am sure it is help that Barrichello will be more than happy to provide. He is clearly a nice guy. And in the knowledge that he is in his final year or two of F1, helping cultivate a new talent may well appeal to him. It is, after all, what his former team-mate Michael Schumacher did with Felipe Massa.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I love the Brazilian Grand Prix. It is a unique circuit &#8212; not only anti-clockwise, but uniquely short in the same way you might think of Spa-Francorchamps as being uniquely long.</p>
<p>It is also special because it has now comprehensively replaced Suzuka as the <em>proper</em> place to settle a World Championship, particularly due to its useful time slot. It is on prime time on European television. That is another unique aspect of Brazil, due to the lack of North American races this year.</p>
<p>So it was most fitting that Jenson Button managed to seal the deal in Interlagos, even when it seemed further out of his grasp than ever. A disastrous qualifying session sent us off the scent. The only saving grace was that Vettel&#8217;s was almost as bad. But his main rival Barrichello was on pole at his home race.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for Barrichello, he never gets any good luck at Interlagos, even when he is doing well. I will never forget the tragedy of his car breaking down in 1999 while he looked like he could win the race driving for Stewart. His bad luck struck again.</p>
<p>After a strong first stint which he led with relatively little challenge, he somehow managed to lose the plot by failing to push hard enough at the start of his second stint, handing the lead to Mark Webber. Later in the race came his tangle with Lewis Hamilton, which resulted in a puncture for Barrichello.</p>
<p>(Apparently Lewis Hamilton can&#8217;t go to Interlagos without having an eventful time. Hats off to him for ploughing his way up to a 3rd place finish from 17th on the grid.)</p>
<p>In normal circumstances, therefore, we would normally be talking about Mark Webber&#8217;s fabulous win. And Pink Peril was right to <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/10/19/congratulations-to-jenson-button-and-brawn-gp/#comment-5122">point it out</a> in the comments to <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/10/19/congratulations-to-jenson-button-and-brawn-gp/">my previous article</a>. Mark Webber did a great job &#8212; the one person who managed to do well in both qualifying and the race.</p>
<p>He certainly had a better weekend than the Red Bull driver who needed it, Vettel. It was suspected that Red Bull would do well <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/10/a-little-pointer-as-to-why-red-bull-will-be-quick-in-brazil/">thanks to the &#8220;testing&#8221; Webber was able to do at Suzuka</a>. Sadly we didn&#8217;t see much of Webber&#8217;s race because the television cameras were more focussed on the Championship protagonists.</p>
<p>As for the Championship winner, Jenson Button, I would say he had the race of his season &#8212; possibly even the race of his life. It really is as though his bad qualifying performance gave him the kick up the backside he needed. I read <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/oct/19/jenson-button-formula-one">one story</a> today which said that after his poor qualifying, he texted his mum to say, &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry mum, we&#8217;re going to kick some butt.&#8221; She replied, &#8220;Good, go and kick some butt.&#8221;</p>
<p>It was as though a barrier had been passed. Button was no longer defending his lead, as he had been since the start of the season. The tide had turned so far that he now had to attack to win. And attack he did!</p>
<p>His aggressive and ballsy driving was captivating to watch. He was already 9th by the end of lap one. Once the Safety Car period was over, he was ready to line up Romain Grosjean, and in the process took a risk by going round the outside. I thought Grosjean did a solid job when racing side-by-side for two or three corners against Button. Button put a lot of faith in the inexperienced Grosjean not to do something silly. But both came out of the fight looking good.</p>
<p>Within a lap, Button got past Kazuki Nakajima in a rather risky move at the Senna S. Several laps later, also into the Senna S, he finally got past Kamui Kobayashi who was in his first race. After that, as the pitstop strategies shook out, Button found himself looking good.</p>
<p>There has been some criticism of Kobayashi&#8217;s driving, particularly weaving in the braking zones. Certainly he pushed it too far later on in the race when he was involved in a high-speed accident with Nakajima. But his defensive driving against Button impressed me and suggests that Kobayashi has promise, even though he wasn&#8217;t particularly good in GP2 (like Nakajima).</p>
<p>While there was some decent racing going on for most of the race, the majority of the action came on the first lap which was rather crazy. My theory is that they just decided to do a Wacky Races thing because it was on prime time.</p>
<p>First there was the accident which brought an end to the races of Adrian Sutil, Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso. Alonso was so placid about it that the BBC&#8217;s commentators did not even notice him at first. He just trudged nonchalantly into his lift. I sense that he really has just been going through the motions, awaiting his big chance in a red car before exerting himself once again.</p>
<p>Little wonder Alonso went by unnoticed, because Jarno Trulli was running up to Sutil and gesticulated in quite a threatening manner. I am struggling to remember the last time I saw a driver so angry. It looked like it was going to turn into this sort of moment!</p>

<p>I am struggling to see what Trulli was so worked up about. Maybe Sutil could have left Trulli some more room, but I think Trulli was optimistic trying to overtake him there anyway. And it is not as if Sutil drove into Trulli. In fact, before Trulli loses control of his car you can see Sutil clearly make an attempt to steer <em>away</em> from Trulli to give him more space.</p>
<p>It was a racing incident in my book. But the accident that resulted was quite a high-speed one, which I guess is why Trulli was so rattled.</p>
<p>Then there was the pitlane fire, when Heikki Kovalainen drove off with the fuel hose still attached. It wasn&#8217;t Kovalainen&#8217;s fault &#8212; he was instructed to leave, but the fuel hose was still attached.</p>
<p>I really am confused as to why we get so many more of these incidents these days. I can&#8217;t remember ever seeing a driver leaving with his fuel hose still attached until Jenson Button did it at Imola in 2006. Since then there have been several, from Christijan Albers (who was effectively sacked for it), to Massa in Singapore last year and Alguersuari in Singapore this year, to Kovalainen now. And I&#8217;m sure there are one or two more that have slipped my mind.</p>
<p>The increasing frequency of these incidents is quite alarming, particularly when so much attention was given to Ferrari&#8217;s pit lane incidents in 2008. Surely teams and drivers must be more aware than ever of the possibility, and it is just bizarre that it keeps on happening over and over again now.</p>
<p>Massive, massive kudos to Kimi Räikkönen for driving through the fire which resulted from Kovalainen&#8217;s premature pit box exit. The fuel was more or less being sprayed into his face, and flames briefly exploded all around him. Yet he kept his foot down and kept driving.</p>
<p>After the race, he said his eyes were still burning! Yet he plodded on. As far as I&#8217;m concerned he could have been blinded by that sort of thing. He must have huge balls. And people say he doesn&#8217;t have motivation.</p>
<p>One last thing to mention &#8212; Robert Kubica. He finished 2nd, his best result of the season, after starting 8th. He had a great restart when the Safety Car pulled in &#8212; he was right on top of Nico Rosberg and passed as soon as he could. I am sorry that Kubica has not been able to show more of his talent this year. I hope Renault can build him the car he deserves.</p>
<p>Next we head to the brand new circuit in Abu Dhabi. The last time the Championship was decided before the final race of the season was in 2005. Then we were treated to one of the best Grands Prix there has ever been, the breathtaking 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. Maybe the same end-of-term atmosphere can spice up Abu Dhabi, which aside from the gimmicky pitlane exit looks like it will be another bland Tilke operation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yes, yes, I know. This is a race that happened almost two weeks ago. Sorry. You should see the list of articles I still haven&#8217;t written yet but need to get round to!</p>
<p>In the intervening period I have received an email asking me what I think of Renault&#8217;s ban from the European Grand Prix. Now I have been <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/05/michael-schumacher-the-most-divisive-man-in-f1/#comment-4577">accosted in the comments</a> by <a href="http://www.f1around.wordpress.com/">Becken</a> for failing to review the Hungarian Grand Prix. So I&#8217;d better do it then!</p>
<p>First of all, you have to give massive amounts of praise to McLaren for their stunning comeback. It was clear at the Nürburgring that this was a team very much on the comeback trail. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/17/german-gp-thoughts/">At the time I said</a> that they could be challenging for wins in the second half of the season. But I didn&#8217;t expect it to be so soon, or so emphatic when it happened.</p>
<p>I am not Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s biggest fan, but I was delighted to see him winning in Hungary. It is a testament to the huge amount of effort that the McLaren team has put into developing their car &#8212; what quite frankly looked like a hopeless task just a couple of months ago. The achievement is all the more incredible when you consider that testing is banned, removing a vital tool to track how the car is developing.</p>
<p>Hamilton&#8217;s run at the front was not down to luck. Nor was it with someone climbing all over his gearbox. Indeed, who could even have predicted that the second-placed car running 11.5s behind would be the <em>Ferrari</em> of Kimi Räikkönen? Are McLaren and Ferrari now once again the front-runners? It could be that kers has come of age.</p>
<p>At times, the grand prix had a very retro feel about it. This season has been all about a new order. But for the first phase of the race the leaders were Alonso and Hamilton, with Räikkönen in 4th. Three names we should be familiar with seeing at the front, but it was most bizarre to see it happening this year.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t help but notice at the same time that the unusual stewards&#8217; decisions have come back just as the old guard have returned to the front. During the first half of this season, the stewards were noticeably quiet (with the exception, of course, of Australia). Not now. Is there something about McLaren, Ferrari and Renault that makes the stewards just lose their minds?</p>
<p>As you might be able to tell, I am not very impressed with the decision to ban Renault from the European Grand Prix for Fernando Alonso&#8217;s wheel coming off. On one hand, you can understand why they did it. In the week which saw the awful death of Henry Surtees in a Formula Two race after he was hit by a wheel, and a day after Felipe Massa was hospitalised after driving into a piece of debris, seeing a wheel bouncing around the track was absolutely the last thing anyone wanted to see.</p>
<p>But the decision to <em>ban the entire team</em> from the next race feels like a complete overreaction, leading to the suspicion that it was a knee-jerk reaction. I could have understood a heavy fine, or some kind of suspended ban. But the FIA&#8217;s justification for the ban seems quite odd to me. They say that the Renault team &#8220;knowingly&#8221; released Alonso from his pit box with the wheel not securely in place. Seems a bit odd to me. Which would deliberately release their car in such a state?</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the fact is that the team apparently took no action after that. They neglected to inform Alonso &#8212; who thought he had a puncture &#8212; what the problem was. That seems pretty incompetent to me, if not downright negligent.</p>
<p>That is why I think a fine would be justified. But to ban them from the race, when we have seen countless instances of wheels falling off cars going unpunished (including a similar incident involving Alonso driving a Renault in Hungary in 2006!), is over the top in my view. That&#8217;s especially the case when you consider that the next race is in Valencia, where much of the crowd will be wanting to see Fernando Alonso in action. Sometimes you think Formula 1 <em>likes</em> to shoot itself in the foot.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, both of the teams that are battling for this season&#8217;s championship will be worried for different reasons. Brawn must now be worried about the drop in their car&#8217;s performance. There is no hiding behind explanations about the temperature. Jenson Button&#8217;s bewildered radio transmission, &#8220;How &#8212; <em>HOW?</em> &#8212; can this car be so BAD?&#8221; sums it up. Brawn have put something on their car to destabilise what was an awesome package.</p>
<p>It is not a complete disaster situation. Jenson Button finished 7th. But it now looks like Brawn are behind at least five teams: McLaren, Ferrari, Red Bull, Williams and Toyota. Their journey is the opposite to McLaren&#8217;s, and their challenge will be all the more difficult with testing banned.</p>
<p>Button actually only lost four points of his lead, which is still 18.5 points. And that is the reason why Red Bull should be worried. Because if they are to have a hope of challenging for the Championship, they need to stay at the sharp end, and they can&#8217;t afford to have the third fastest car. They need to be at the front, collecting 18, 16, 15 points when they can. Their tally from Budapest was just six.</p>
<p>It must be remembered that Hungaroring is a rather unique circuit, and many of the following circuits are very different indeed. But if McLaren and Ferrari are able to leapfrog Red Bull in the long run, Red Bull need to rely on staying ahead of Williams, Toyota and Brawn if their championship battle is to come to anything.</p>
<p>In this sense, despite only scoring two points, Jenson Button now looks like even more of a shoe-in for the championship. I&#8217;m sure he doesn&#8217;t feel like it. I can&#8217;t wait to find out how the rest of the season unfolds.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Who is the most controversial man in F1? Is it Bernie Ecclestone with his bizarre comments about Hitler and Jewish black female drivers? Is it Max Mosley with his political posturing and <del>Nazi</del> <ins>German prisoner</ins> themed sex orgies? Nope &#8212; it&#8217;s Michael Schumacher.</p>
<p>When it was announced that Michael Schumacher was preparing to replace Felipe Massa at Ferrari while the Brazilian convalesces, the great ideological gulf among F1 fans suddenly re-emerged. I can&#8217;t remember seeing such strong reactions on any issue about <em>any</em> subject, let alone F1.</p>
<p>For some people, Michael Schumacher might as well be Jesus. You could produce video evidence of him killing a kitten and he would still be the greatest man on earth. Anyone who says otherwise doesn&#8217;t appreciate genius when they see it?</p>
<p>For others, there is nothing that can redeem Michael Schumacher. He is a serial cheat whose team-mates were all hamstrung and whose seven World Drivers&#8217; Championships are among the least deserving ever awarded. You must surely see that he is the most evil man on earth?</p>
<p>My view is slightly more nuanced. He was a bit of both. His record speaks for itself, and he must take credit especially for his ability to build a team around him. But I hated the way he went about racing.</p>
<p><span style="float:right;padding-left:5px;"><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/P/0755316495.01._SCMZZZZZZZ_.jpg" alt="The Edge of Greatness cover" /></a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></span> Incidentally, for a fair-minded assessment of Michael Schumacher, I highly recommend James Allen&#8217;s book, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0755316495?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=doctorvee-21&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1634&#038;creative=19450&#038;creativeASIN=0755316495">The Edge of Greatness</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.co.uk/e/ir?t=doctorvee-21&#038;l=as2&#038;o=2&#038;a=0755316495" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /></i>. I always thought James Allen as a commentator was too biased in favour of Schumacher, but his book displays a very measured and nuanced assessment of his qualities as a driver, and his failings as a sportsperson.</p>
<p>I must come straight out and say that I have never been a fan of Michael Schumacher. Never. And for me, his talent was tainted by his tendency to bend the rules whenever he had the slightest opportunity.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t even rate him much as a racer. For me, his wheel-to-wheel skills were rather poor, and he disguised this by being overly aggressive. That was why he often panicked under pressure, such as at Jerez in 1997. If he found himself in the midfield, he sometimes had very clumsy races indeed &#8212; his botched move on Takuma Sato at Suzuka in 2003 springs to mind.</p>
<p>Schumacher was famous for relying on Ross Brawn strategies to &#8220;overtake in the pitlane&#8221; rather than try to make a genuine overtaking move. I highly doubt that Schumacher would have won as many Championships if refuelling wasn&#8217;t legal. I won&#8217;t lie: 2000&#8211;2004 were my least favourite years of watching F1 since I first fell in love with the sport in the mid-1990s.</p>
<p>Since Schumacher left F1 I do feel as though I have started to enjoy F1 a lot more. Even though some of the drivers are not perfect in terms of their adherence to the rules or their spirit of fair competition, it feels a lot less like a dark cloud such as Rascassegate will come rumbling over the hills at any moment.</p>
<p>Now, of course, he is back in F1 and it has changed again. It amuses me greatly that even weeks before his first grand prix back is due to start, he already <a href="http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-fota-teams-allow-schu-to-test-f60/">sought ways to cheat</a>, to unfairly gain an advantage over his competitors. It says it all about him in one action.</p>
<p>Williams are not my favourite team either, but they were totally right to block this blatant infringement of the rules. Just a couple of weeks before, Toro Rosso&#8217;s new driver Jaime Alguersuari was refused a similar request, and he did a perfectly adequate job. Quite why a supposedly great 7 times World Champion needs to practice so much is not clear to me.</p>
<p>Ferrari&#8217;s <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/77551">enormously arrogant statement</a> in retaliation against the blocked request sums up why I can&#8217;t stand the team so much. Apparently they think the red rule should still exist. What happened to that spirit of cooperation they were supposedly so keen on? I guess now that the Concorde Agreement is signed, cordial relations are not so important any more.</p>
<p>It is clear that the testing rules need amending. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/03/04/the-testing-ban-another-botched-rule-change/">I have been saying so for a long time now</a>. But until a new set of rules are agreed upon, everyone needs to adhere to them, otherwise you may as well just rip the rulebook up (some would argue Ferrari have ripped up the rulebook and written their own anyway).</p>
<p>This is all a sign that Michael Schumacher does not intend to simply go through the motions. I had wondered quite what was in this comeback for Schumacher. I saw easily <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/07/29/michael-schumacher-returns-to-race-for-ferrari/">why Ferrari were interested</a>. But what could possibly have motivated Schumacher?</p>
<p>After all, he potentially has so much to lose. With his wife and kids &#8212; and we know his wife is concerned because he says he has <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?id=46549&#038;PO=46549">made an &#8220;arrangement&#8221;</a> with her that health is the top priority &#8212; he surely doesn&#8217;t want to be doing something so dangerous. He cannot possibly need the money, and he certainly doesn&#8217;t have anything else to prove (unless he wants somehow to prove that he can be a good sportsperson, but that opportunity has already been shot).</p>
<p>He also risks being embarrassed because of his waning ability. At 40, he is the oldest driver to compete in F1 since Nigel Mansell in 1995, and let us not forget that Mansell&#8217;s last period as an F1 driver was not exactly a roaring success. And after two and a half years out of competitive grand prix racing, there is every chance that he will be rusty during his forthcoming races.</p>
<p>But now we know what motivates him &#8212; it is his sheer, ruthless competitiveness. He may have initially agreed out of &#8220;loyalty&#8221; to Ferrari, but once he&#8217;s a driver again he is up to the same old tricks, looking for the slightest advantage wherever it may come from.</p>
<p>Of course, many would say that this is what sets him apart from everyone else.</p>
