			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There have been four grands prix in 2011 so far, and they have been widely hailed as a great success. There is no doubt that the races have been action-packed, with something always going on.</p>
<p>But I wasn&#8217;t feeling it quite as much as many others were. I thought the Chinese Grand Prix was okay. But the reaction of others left me perplexed. All kinds of platitudes were bandied about. &#8220;The best dry race in decades!&#8221; &#8220;The best since Japan 2005!&#8221; Really? I wasn&#8217;t feeling that <em>at all</em>.</p>
<p>But I couldn&#8217;t quite put my finger on what was leaving me cold about F1 in 2011. There have been a lot of changes for this season, which has led to a very different style of racing. <strong>But what was it about the new F1 that was leaving me less thrilled than others?</strong></p>
<p>It took me some time to work it out. But once I hit on it, the worse it seemed &#8212; and it has left me feeling a bit pessimistic about the prospects for truly good racing in 2011.</p>
<h3>A pain in DRS?</h3>
<p>A lot of attention has been focused on the brand new drag reduction system. Results of the DRS have been patchy.</p>
<p>At some races &#8212; particularly Australia &#8212; the DRS has been just enough to allow a driver behind to catch up. At the opposite extreme, in Turkey it was obvious that the DRS zone was far too long, and drivers were making <strong>easy passes</strong> that were <strong>not pleasing to watch</strong>.</p>
<p>The core problem is that it gives one driver and advantage over another &#8212; a significant deviation from the purity of racing. <strong>Comparisons to turbo boosts in the 1980s are no good.</strong> It may be a button that drivers can press, but there the similarity ends.</p>
<p>Back then, all of the options were open to everyone. You could choose to have a turbo or not, and you could use it whenever you wanted. But to say <em>who</em> can use a device and <em>when</em> they can use it is not on.</p>
<p>To artificially give the trailing driver a speed advantage is taking us into Mario Kart territory. As a friend said to me, &#8220;It&#8217;s like they have allowed cheating&#8221;. It is <strong>fundamentally wrong</strong> and does not belong in any event that calls itself a sport.</p>
<p>I love the idea of moveable rear wings, but the implementation is all wrong. I don&#8217;t even understand why it can only be used in one part of the circuit. As Niki Lauda said, why is it the FIA&#8217;s job to say where drivers can pass each other?</p>
<p>Moreover, the hit and miss nature of the DRS zone is leading to different sorts of results in different races. The zones change size, and sometimes the FIA have got it wrong. They have even changed the position of the DRS activation point during a race weekend. What other word is there for this apart from &#8216;<strong>manipulation</strong>&#8216;?</p>
<p>This may be a device designed to <strong>&#8220;fix&#8221; the &#8220;problems&#8221;</strong> with overtaking. Instead, we have come one step away from <strong>fixing the results</strong>.</p>
<h3>F1 has sold its rubber soul</h3>
<p>But I am more concerned about the situation with the new <strong>Pirelli tyres</strong>. While the DRS is widely criticised, people have been much kinder about the tyre situation. Indeed, one of the more popular refrains this year has been &#8220;thank you Pirelli&#8221;. But <strong>I am in no mood to thank them</strong>.</p>
<p>They are designed to degrade artificially quickly. This is a significant deviation from the concept of F1. Formula 1 is now no longer about the best drivers in the best cars. It&#8217;s about <strong>the best drivers in the best cars &#8212; with the worst tyres</strong>.</p>
<p>While technical regulations have always restricted cars (it is the &#8220;formula&#8221; in Formula 1, after all), the tradition has always been to maximise the performance to create the fastest car possible that adheres to the formula of the day. That is what brings us radical ideas like the double diffuser and the F-duct, that many F1 fans love to talk about.</p>
<p>With the tyres, Pirelli have <em>deliberately</em> made them perform badly. Come on, <strong>this is supposed to be elite motorsport</strong>.</p>
<p>Moreover, these dodgy tyres have now become the central issue of a grand prix weekend. I have long bemoaned the dominance of tyres in F1. If a car has better aerodynamics, you can see it. If an engine is faster, you can hear it. But the tyres? They are just black boxes that sit in the four corners.</p>
<p>But there is no getting away from it &#8212; tyres are hugely important to the performance of a car. What I don&#8217;t understand is why you would want to <em>accentuate</em> that.</p>
<p>Critics of F1 often complain that the drivers of the best cars always win. What these people misunderstand is that F1 is all about engineering excellence, just as much as it is about great driving.</p>
<p>But now we have now reached a stage where the <strong>deciding factor is <em>neither</em> the driver <em>nor</em> the car</strong>. It is now all about strategy &#8212; driven by deliberately dodgy tyres &#8212; above all else.</p>
<p>They are now so important that the situation is now threatening to make qualifying a complete non-event. After all those years spent tweaking the format of qualifying in the name of &#8220;the show&#8221;, you have to laugh when further changes totally break a format they finally got right.</p>
<p>The reason? Because you need as many fresh sets of tyres as possible to last the whole race. This means less track action on Saturday, as teams are fearful of using too many sets of tyres. What is this, Formula 1 bean counting, or Formula 1 motor racing?</p>
<h3>Divergent strategies reduce real racing</h3>
<p>In addition to spearing Saturday action, it is my view that the tyres situation is making Sundays less exciting too.</p>
<p>Take the experience of <strong>Mark Webber</strong>. He climbed from 18th on the grid to finish 3rd in China. You&#8217;d think if anyone would be excited about the wheel-to-wheel action in 2011, it would be him. Not so much.</p>
<p>After the race <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13108927.stm">he told the BBC</a>, &#8220;Sometimes the overtaking moves aren&#8217;t that genuine because the guys really have nothing to fight back with. <strong>It&#8217;s more tactical now, and a bit less racing.</strong>&#8221; During the BBC&#8217;s broadcast from Turkey, Martin Brundle revealed that Webber had told him privately that he got no satisfaction out of the progress through the field in China. <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/05/did-the-drs-wing-make-things-too-artificial-in-turkey/">James Allen further hinted</a> at Webber&#8217;s distinct unhappiness at the situation.</p>
<p>Following Turkey, <strong>Jenson Button</strong> lay the blame for his poor result squarely on his strategy. Asked about what happens when his tyres go off, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/formula_one/13327233.stm">Button said</a>, &#8220;You&#8217;re not racing any more. You&#8217;re trying your best to get the best out of the car, but <strong>you&#8217;re not racing anyone around you because you are a sitting duck</strong>&#8230; They just come past you and you can&#8217;t do anything.&#8221;</p>
<p>Overtaking has looked like it&#8217;s too easy this year, and it is not just because of DRS. The situation with the tyres means that drivers are dealing with such radically different levels of grip that the <strong>slower driver does not even bother to defend</strong> any more.</p>
<p>Many celebrated <strong>Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s pass on Sebastian Vettel</strong> for the lead of the Chinese Grand Prix. But for me, it <strong>killed the race</strong> as soon as it happened. I was hoping for Vettel to be able to defend, but he simply couldn&#8217;t. As it was, <strong>the pass was inevitable</strong> for laps in advance.</p>
<p>In the laps between Hamilton&#8217;s pitstop and his pass on Vettel, the McLaren driver was an average of <strong>0.9s a lap faster</strong> than the Red Bull. (At one point he set a lap time <em>1.6 seconds</em> up on Vettel.) To put this into perspective, during Q1 in China, a 0.9s gap to the fastest driver would have earned <strong>18th on the grid</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Is it really exciting to watch a car that&#8217;s got an advantage of around one second a lap breeze on by?</strong> Not for me. This isn&#8217;t overtaking &#8212; it&#8217;s merely passing. It&#8217;s hardly Dijon 1979, is it? Today René Arnoux would flip his flap, press his boost button and head off into the distance on his superior tyres &#8212; race over.</p>
<p>The performance differences are huge, and it is all down to decisions that are made by computers far in advance. It is out of the driver&#8217;s hands. <strong>What is this, the Excel Grand Prix of Spreadsheet?</strong></p>
<p>It is right that strategy plays a part in a race. But this year the balance has been tipped way over the edge, to the point where the driver&#8217;s influence on the outcome of the race has been severely diminished. You almost may as well hold the grand prix on a computer where all of the strategies have been put in.</p>
<p>To open up strategy options for this season without resorting to crap tyres that create crap pseudo-racing, they could simply have ditched the rule whereby drivers are forced to run on both compounds. This would have opened up the possibilities of running a 0, 1 or 2 stop strategy.</p>
<p>Instead, we are now seeing record-breaking levels of pitstops &#8212; upwards of 80 pitstops a race &#8212; for no good reason. This has <strong>taken away the emphasis from the on-track action</strong>, and has made huge amounts of the &#8220;racing&#8221; totally irrelevant.</p>
<h3>It wasn&#8217;t broke, so why &#8220;fix&#8221; it?</h3>
<p>The most disturbing thing about all the changes this season is the fact that there was <strong>very little wrong with Formula 1 in the first place</strong>. I didn&#8217;t complain that Formula 1 is dull. And while there was room for improvement, I have long bemoned the gimmicky thinking that has come about through efforts to &#8220;improve the show&#8221;. Now it is in danger of jumping the shark.</p>
<p>I love Formula 1 motor racing. I have done since the mid-1990s. There were lots of other people who claimed they also loved F1 &#8212; but at the same time complained about &#8220;processional races&#8221;. <strong>They said that F1 was too dull. Yet, for some reason, they still watched it anyway, and demanded changes.</strong> Huh?</p>
<p>I feel like the sport I love has been <strong>hijacked</strong>.</p>
<p>I also believe that the criticisms of the new format have been misunderstood by some insiders. It is not &#8220;too much overtaking&#8221; or &#8220;too much of a good thing&#8221;.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2011/04/f1-racing-2011-style-can-you-have-too-much-of-a-good-thing/">James Allen said</a>, &#8220;it’s a bit like going into a sweet shop and eating half the stock, when you’ve only been used to getting a packet of Polos at best.&#8221; That&#8217;s not how I feel. It&#8217;s actually more like going into a nice restaurant expecting a good meal and being served a Big Mac instead.</p>
<h3>Time to end the fixation with &#8220;the show&#8221;</h3>
<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong. I am still deriving satisfaction from Formula 1 this season. But the wheel-to-wheel action has become a lot more insipid this year, and bland passing has become so prevalent that <strong>overtaking has become devalued</strong>.</p>
<p>Kers is great for Formula 1. But the tyres situation, combined with DRS, is threatening to spoil the party. It wasn&#8217;t broke, but they fixed it anyway. But in <strong>&#8220;fixing&#8221; the racing</strong>, we have come just one step away from <strong>fixed races</strong>. The positioning of the DRS zone, determined by an FIA mandarin, could potentially make the difference between who wins and who loses.</p>
<p>Somewhere along the line, F1 has become so fixated on &#8220;the show&#8221; that it has <strong>forgotten about the race</strong>. There are now too many gimmicks and complications that deviate from the core concept that has served motorsport well for over a century: <strong>put a bunch of cars on a track and discover which is the fastest</strong>.</p>
<p>Of course, motorsport must always seek to entertain the audience. It wouldn&#8217;t exist otherwise. But you also need to remember why fans of motorsport tune in. Clue: it&#8217;s because they want to see a motor race. There are plenty of other places where you can be entertained by contrived or fictitious means.</p>
<p>But sport is supposed to be based on merit. <strong>It needs to be real.</strong></p>
<p>When <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/91298">Renault&#8217;s James Allison said</a> &#8220;We are an <strong>entertainment business</strong>,&#8221; it showed how wrong this whole approach is. We are dangerously striding towards WWE territory. If James Allison wants to work in an entertainment business, he can <strong>go to work in Hollywood</strong>. I want to watch a race.</p>
<p>The toxic focus on &#8220;the show&#8221; needs to stop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What do viewers at home love about F1? It is great wheel-to-wheel racing? Lots of overtaking? Strategy calls? Or the venues? Looking at the polarised reactions to this past weekend&#8217;s Singapore Grand Prix got me wondering.</p>
<p>A few of the journalists were pretty effusive about the race. <a href="http://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/25592558053">Will Buxton was particularly euphoric</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Epic race. One of the best of the season. Wow.</p></blockquote>
<p>I saw that this drew a few hoots of derision, including from me! Because from the comments made by other fans watching at home was that&#8230; well&#8230; it was a bit dull really.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t a stinker by any means. There was some good action and a fair few talking points. But large stretches of the race were rather processional. Hardly epic.</p>
<h3>The epic race without the racing</h3>
<p>Will Buxton justified his comments:</p>
<blockquote><p>No sarcasm. Epic race. ALO VET lap trading, WEB early stop and brill drive, HAM / WEB moment, GLO driving arse off. KUB amazing.</p></blockquote>
<p>There is some truth in what he says. While Webber and Kubica provided some entertainment, this was only because they were out of phase with the surrounding cars strategy-wise, so were not on an equal footing with the drivers they were battling with.</p>
<p>As for the battle at the front, the problem was that Alonso&#8217;s victory was never truly in doubt. He commanded the track all weekend, and always even looked like he might have a bit extra left in the tank too.</p>
<p>During the first phase of the race, Vettel drifted back to 3.5s behind Alonso. After the pitstops, the gap eventually grew to over 2s before slowly decreasing again. Vettel did get mighty close to the end of the race, but this was typical Alonso driving conservatively.</p>
<p>Renault engineers always talked about how conservative Alonso was as a driver. They never had to tell him to turn the engine down; he had already done it.</p>
<p>So it was in Singapore. Alonso had done just enough to establish himself as the certain winner of the Singapore Grand Prix and had the whole situation under control.</p>
<p>It may have looked good on the timing screens. I did indeed get excited when purple sectors were being set and Vettel started to decrease the gap. But the &#8220;lap battle&#8221; was partly down to the street circuit becoming cleaner and faster towards the end of the race.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m sure they were playing with each other, but neither looked to be pushing particularly hard. Alonso was always in control, and Vettel never looked interested in truly pressurising.</p>
<p>At the start of the race, Vettel had ceded the first corner, setting the tone for his race. It did not look like he was particularly interested in winning &#8212; a suspicion confirmed by Vettel&#8217;s comments that <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/87000">passing Alonso would have been too risky</a>. And why bother? Alonso is the ultimate defensive driver, as his amazing battle with Michael Schumacher at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix demonstrated.</p>
<p>The bottom line is that if you hold a race on a street circuit with one overtaking spot &#8212; two at a push &#8212; then the racing isn&#8217;t epic. There might be stuff surrounding the racing &#8212; strategy, crashes, pretty buildings&#8230; But not much overtaking.</p>
<p>Interesting, yes. Epic, no. The ingredients simply weren&#8217;t there.</p>
<h3>Epic racing or epic facilities?</h3>
<p>There is a trend for certain venues to be talked up a lot by the F1 circus, no matter how good the racing is. I particularly remember Valencia Street Circuit &#8212; which has served up three of the most turgid grands prix seen in the last decade &#8212; was universally praised by the teams as being a great venue for grand prix racing.</p>
<p>Scratch the surface of the headlines, though, and you see that they are not so interested in the racing itself. Ron Dennis said that the 2008 European Grand Prix at Valencia was so great that it made him &#8220;ashamed to be English&#8221;. But it left most others ashamed to be F1 fans, it was so bereft of racing.</p>
<p>Of course, <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2008/09/02/the-disappointment-of-valencia-shows-that-fans-have-been-forgotten/">Ron Dennis was thinking about the facilities</a>. Facilities are apparently the only thing that matter in F1 these days. Never mind what the viewers at home make of the track. As long as the venue is equipped with a shiny silver throne for the McLaren chief to do his golden business in, who cares about the people at home?</p>
<p>Similarly, the journalists have clear favourite places to visit and places they can&#8217;t stand. China? Don&#8217;t talk to them about it. And spare a thought for poor, poor Magny-Cours. It was so awful &#8212; not because of the circuit, of course, but because it was in the middle of nowhere, as the journalists never missed the chance to remind us!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Melbourne is always the &#8220;great place for a race&#8221; &#8212; is that code for a booze-up? And Singapore is now &#8220;epic&#8221;.</p>
<p>Never mind the fact that the Marina Bay Street Circuit is not great for overtaking. Never mind that the 2008 race needed a manufactured crash to pep it up, and that the 2009 race was <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/11/07/brazil-voted-best-race-of-2009-turkey-named-worst-of-a-bad-bunch/">voted the fourth worst of the season by F1 Fanatic readers</a>.</p>
<h3>TV coverage demonstrates skewed priorities</h3>
<p>The scenario was not helped by some rather lacklustre television coverage from FOM this weekend. It looked to me like the director was more used to directing pop music videos than motorsport.</p>
<p>Coverage at night races is always dominated by shots of the lit-up buildings and the scenery surrounding the circuit. It feels more like the Singapore Grand Prix is more like an advert for Singapore than a motor race. Who was going to bed last weekend without seeing that flashing &#8220;Your Singapore&#8221; banner in their sleep?</p>
<p>When it comes to races like this, Bernie Ecclestone&#8217;s priorities are clear. Why else would the <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2010/03/26/the-declining-standard-of-f1-television-coverage/">bland coverage of last year&#8217;s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix</a> have won an FIA award for best coverage of the season? Much of the race action was missed. Anyone not paying full attention would have thought that the race was won by a hotel that looks like a giant flashing lady-toy, so fixated were the cameras on anything but the cars.</p>
<p>Those in the inner circle in F1 should remember that the fans at home are looking for epic racing &#8212; not epic Holywood movies, epic nightlife or epic superloos.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I&#8217;ll be upfront here. While many like Williams, with their &#8220;plucky underdog&#8221; status and stridently independent approach, they have never been my among my favourite teams. To the extent that I have ever liked them, it has been as the anti-Ferrari. In other words, I like them about as much as I like McLaren, which is not very much &#8212; but hey, at least they can beat Ferrari.</p>
<p>Today, Williams can&#8217;t beat Ferrari, so I am rather indifferent about them. But at a time where the majority of the grid is made up of manufacturers &#8212; of cars and drinks &#8212; even I can see that there is something romantic about Williams. I think it would be good to see them at the front again.</p>
<p>But if I was a fan of the team, I would probably have well and truly lost patience by now. Every year the team says, &#8220;just wait &#8212; next year we&#8217;ll be back&#8221;. They spend all winter making positive noises. And then when it comes to the big day itself? They are even slower than they were before.</p>
<h3>One of the most successful teams in history</h3>
<p>When they last won a Constructors&#8217; Championship in 1997, Williams had won more of them than Ferrari. The record was staggering &#8212; nine Constructors&#8217; and seven Drivers&#8217; Championships in just 20 seasons. It was an utterly fearsome record.</p>
<p>At that stage, Williams had won races in all but two of its seasons &#8212; its very first in 1978, and a brief drought in 1988 when the team had to make do with inferior Judd engines after Honda jumped ship to McLaren. Even then, Nigel Mansell managed to wring a couple of second place finishes out of it, which is more than can be said for what came after 1997.</p>
<p>Once again, Williams was left in the lurch after the departure of the front-running engine manufacturer &#8212; this time Renault. To make matters worse, chief designer Adrian Newey left Williams to join McLaren. 1998 was a year of continuity for Williams, in all the wrong ways &#8212; using what were effectively year-old Renault engines and what some said was the 1997 chassis adapted for 1998 regulations.</p>
<p>In 1999 the team faced further difficulties with Alex Zanardi struggling to adapt to F1 after a successful time in ChampCars. While the wins dried up, this difficult spell was thankfully short lived, as in 2000 Williams forged a new partnership with BMW.</p>
<p>2000 was a learning year for all concerned, but successes came between 2001 and 2003, when Williams returned to winning ways. Williams were even strong title contenders in 2003, with four victories and nine podiums, Williams were a strong player in a tight three-way battle for the championship. As unlikely as it seems today, Juan Pablo Montoya was almost a World Champion!</p>
<h3>The slide from the top</h3>
<p>Unfortunately, things started to go pear-shaped again in 2004. A radical &#8220;walrus nose&#8221; concept brought little in the way of performance, and a more conventional design was brought out midway through the season. Montoya managed to win the final race in Brazil, but this race remains the team&#8217;s last taste of success.</p>
<p>Almost every year since then has seemingly seen Williams slip back a bit further, with the successes of the old days becoming an ever more distant memory. In the past five years, the team has had just four podium finishes. (Barring success in Turkey, that number will reduce to three this weekend!)</p>
<p>The brightest spot has been 2007, when a consistent set of results from Nico Rosberg helped the team bag a commendable fourth place in the Constructors&#8217; Championship (although that was after McLaren&#8217;s disqualification from the Championship). Apart from that, Williams have become a fixture at the back of the midfield &#8212; if you can call 8th out of 10 teams the &#8220;midfield&#8221;.</p>
<h3>Arrogant enough to believe their own excuses</h3>
<p>All the while, the excuses came, and fans were reassured: &#8220;next year is our year&#8221;. And next year comes and everything is all the same. Even if they trick people into thinking they&#8217;re fast by topping Friday Practice times, as Williams did in the first half of last season, people soon become wise to the fact that the car is not truly capable of it.</p>
<p>Before, there was always a positive spin to put on the situation. In 2009, Williams were bad &#8212; but at least Renault were worse and BMW weren&#8217;t much better. In 2008 people were more concerned with the alarming lack of pace in the Honda. 2006 was regarded as a tough deal for Williams, struggling with apparently sluggish and unreliable Cosworth engines.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s difficult to sugar-coat this year&#8217;s results in the same way. Although seventh doesn&#8217;t sound too bad, in effect the only teams that are behind them are either new (in the case of Virgin, Hispania and Lotus), facing hugely difficult political and financial constraints (Sauber) or have designed their own car for the first time (Toro Rosso). The shocker is that Williams are even being compared to teams like this.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Force India look a great deal more convincing, and Renault have again leapfrogged Williams and look like potential challengers to the top four teams. Indeed, Toro Rosso even look like they can realistically challenge Williams on the racetrack, particularly with a couple of feisty young drivers who are stepping up to the plate in style, particularly in the case of Jaime Alguersuari. Meanwhile, in China Nico Hülkenberg finished behind the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen.</p>
<p>It seems as though Williams allowed arrogance to get the better of them. It was always someone else&#8217;s fault. But increasingly, Williams have been made to eat humble pie.</p>
<p>Williams lay the blame for their early-2000s dip at the door of BMW. This ended in an acrimonious split in 2005, by which time each party had become convinced that the other side was not pulling its weight. But BMW did a pretty good job when they joined forces with Sauber, the disappointment of 2009 notwithstanding. Meanwhile, Williams became inert &#8212; a permanent fixture of the midfield.</p>
<p>Of course, if it wasn&#8217;t the engine&#8217;s fault, it was the drivers&#8217; fault. I was very interested to see <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/news_article.aspx?id=48469">Frank Williams admitting</a> that, in the light of Mark Webber&#8217;s recent successes, the team was too hasty to lay the blame at the door of its driver for their average spell in 2005 and 2006.</p>
<blockquote><p>When we had him obviously our car was a disappointment and we felt he was part of the problem. He probably wasn&#8217;t actually, with hindsight. The major point was that the car had problems.</p></blockquote>
<h3>Is there a way back?</h3>
<p>I think the Williams of today is a great deal less arrogant than the Williams of four or five years ago. But now the damage has been done. Is there a way back to the top for this proud team? 13 years on from its last Championship success, it&#8217;s difficult to see.</p>
<p>Already, there are rumours that Williams are unhappy with Cosworth (just like in 2006). Rumours are linking them to a partnership with Renault. Williams were linked to Renault last year too, and Frank Williams confessed that the prospect of &#8220;Williams Renault&#8221;, a reminder of the team&#8217;s most dominant period in the 1990s, was exciting.</p>
<p>Other rumours link Williams to a partnership with Porsche, with whom they have collaborated on kers. But the problems run deeper than the matter of their engine supply, as surely the lessons of the BMW split show.</p>

Sadly, it seems as though this year Williams have to make do with racing against the likes of Sauber, a zombie team that is on emergency life support, and Lotus, a team that didn&#8217;t even exist a few months ago.</p>
<p>I hope they can make it. I was privileged enough to be invited to the <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/08/10/my-trip-to-the-williams-f1-factory/">Williams factory and museum</a> last year. The museum is a wonderful place, brimful of some of the most successful grand prix cars there have ever been. The team only goes back just over 30 years, but it is such a huge part of Formula 1&#8242;s history. It would be such a shame if Williams were stuck at the back of the grid forever.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Belated congratulations to Jenson Button for becoming the 2009 World Champion. I know it&#8217;s long overdue, but hey &#8212; that&#8217;s what happens when <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/11/21/real-life-intervenes/">real life takes over</a> (<a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2009/12/06/there-is-a-good-reason-for-the-lack-of-updates/">more on that real life stuff can be found here</a>).</p>
<p>I have not always been convinced that Jenson Button is a good driver. In fact, the only times he has impressed me before were his début season in 2000, and 2007 when he did an admirable job in what was by all accounts a horrendous car. In 2008 he was, oddly, not so impressive. Perhaps he had lost motivation after being let down by Honda for too many years, but the fact is that Rubens Barrichello did a better job in 2008.</p>
<p>The Brazilian had his moments in 2009, but it is difficult to argue that he was better than Jenson Button throughout the season. While Button&#8217;s sudden rise to the sharp end of the grid at the start of 2009 got many people asking whether it was all down to the car, Barrichello was often to be found scrapping around in the lower end of the points positions.</p>
<p>There is no doubt about the fact that this year&#8217;s Brawn car was much better than last year&#8217;s Honda car was a major contributory factor towards Jenson Button&#8217;s Championship victory. And it is true that Rubens Barrichello performed better than Button in the second half of the season. And, yes, without Barrichello&#8217;s vital set-up data, Jenson Button would probably have been nowhere.</p>
<p>But while Jenson Button was pounding in the wins, taking full advantage of the Brawn&#8217;s superiority while it was still there, Rubens Barrichello took too long to get up to speed with it. Let us also not forget that Jenson Button was seriously impressive during the first half of the season, putting in some of the best overtaking moves there have been all year.</p>
<p>It is certainly the case that this sort of aggressive form was not much in evidence during the second half of the season. After gaining victory in Turkey, it seems as though Jenson Button tensed up, not returning to form until Brazil.</p>
<p>For a lot of people, this was turning out to be a real damp squib. People do not like to see a driver winning a championship by merely bagging points rather than taking impressive victories. However, Button earned the right to be given this leeway, so impressive he was at the start of the season.</p>
<p>I would have said after Turkey that Jenson Button would have to have been <em>really</em> bad in the second half of the season to not deserve the title. But while he may have been slightly disappointing, he wasn&#8217;t <em>really</em> bad. He only failed to score once all year, in Belgium when he was crashed into on lap one. That is a pretty intimidating achievement.</p>
<p>Now it is no secret that Jenson Button suffered under the stress of defending his championship lead. Simply looking at his results for the season tells its own story. He was dominant in the first seven races, but occupied the lower end of the points for the rest of the season.</p>
<p>While some were critical of this drop in form, the fact is that almost all championship leaders do this. In fact, it would be completely foolish to any driver with a massive championship lead at the mid-way point to tackle the second half of the season in the same manner. As Ross Brawn said, if a football team is leading 3-0 at half time, they don&#8217;t play the second half in the same style as the first.</p>
<p>Looking back over the years, this is a pattern that is repeated time after time. The driver who leads at the halfway point of the season almost always scores fewer points in the second half of the season. Looking at the past ten seasons, the leader at the halfway point has always turned down the wick, with the exception of Fernando Alonso in 2005. The drop in performance has been particularly marked since the points system was changed for 2003, which shifted the balance towards consistency and conservatism over aggression.</p>
<p>(In seasons with an odd number of races, the middle race has been removed from the calculation.)</p>

<p>Clearly, Button&#8217;s drop-off was particularly extreme. However, it was not that much more extreme than Alonso&#8217;s in 2006. Alonso is rightly lauded for being conservative when he needs to be. Button should be too. Even though the drop-off seemed alarming, the fact is that he had made himself more than enough room to get away with it, and still secure the championship with one race to spare. Why expend more energy by taking the more risky strategy of going all-out for wins when you can achieve it in the way Jenson Button did?</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it is difficult to deny that the way Jenson Button won the championship was slightly underwhelming. It certainly wouldn&#8217;t have been very satisfying were it not for his scintillating performance in Brazil. Of course, he did indeed pull that performance out of the bag just when he needed it, so it is slightly academic now.</p>
<p>But by almost any measure you can conceive of, Jenson Button was the most deserving person to win the championship. I have had a look at different scoring systems that would reward more consistent performances throughout the season. Although it is always a spurious exercise to impose different scoring systems on a set of races that have already taken place (remembering that altering the incentives inevitably affects behaviour), it is interesting to look at systems that may have punished Jenson Button for not performing so well towards the end of the season.</p>
<p>One such system would be to split the season into, say, four sections, with drivers dropping their worst score from each quarter of the season. What with there being an odd number of races in 2009, this is affected by where you decide to place the splits. But with three sections of four races, and a final section with the final four races, this cuts Jenson Button&#8217;s lead down to just three points over Sebastian Vettel. However, Button would still win under this system.</p>
<p>Splitting the season into two halves and making drivers drop two scores, Button&#8217;s victory margin can be cut down to two points. However, Button still wins the championship.</p>
<p>The only vaguely sensible system I have been able to come up with is making drivers drop six scores from the whole season. This puts Button and Vettel level on points, although of course Button would still win the championship because he has won more races.</p>
<p>Only by splitting the season into two and making drivers drop three scores from each half does Vettel score more points than Button. Whether it would be desirable to have a system where six races from each driver&#8217;s season do not count towards the championship is debatable.</p>
<p>Looking at the results of the season, it is striking just how superior Jenson Button was to everyone else. Jenson Button only failed to score once. His nearest challenger, Vettel, chalked up five zeros. Mark Webber failed to score <em>seven</em> times, while Hamilton finished pointless <em>nine</em> times.</p>
<p>Button also won two more races than anyone else. To Button&#8217;s six, Vettel took the chequered flag four times, while Barrichello, Webber and Hamilton each took it twice.</p>
<p>In terms of the results, the clear closest challenger to Button has been Vettel. No doubt there would have been complaints about his championship too, due to his tendency still to make mistakes, and his alarming inability to overtake. And speaking of overtaking, who could deny that Button pulled off some of the best overtaking moves of the season?</p>
<p>Is Jenson Button a deserving champion? I can hardly imagine what more you could ask for.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The end of this season has not been a particularly healthy one for Formula 1. Two major names have left, and another has had an emergency meeting to consider if it should leave too.</p>
<p>First of all, the sole tyre supplier, Bridgestone, has announced that it will quit F1 at the end of 2011 when its current contract ends. This came as a shock. With the spotlight on car manufacturers, it doesn&#8217;t seem to have entered anyone&#8217;s mind that a company such as Bridgestone, which has been so incredibly loyal to the sport, would consider upping sticks.</p>
<p>I can remember a time when Bridgestone were not in F1, but only just. When I started watching Formula 1 in the mid-1990s, Goodyear was the sole tyre supplier. But Bridgestone entered in 1997, beginning the &#8220;tyre war&#8221;. When Goodyear left soon afterwards, it was not long until Michelin came in to begin an even fiercer tyre war.</p>
<p>I wasn&#8217;t a big fan of the tyre war. Mostly, one tyre was a major advantage over the other, so we were essentially left with two championships &#8212; a Bridgestone championship and a Michelin championship. Considering Bridgestone practically tailor-made their tyres to suit Ferrari, this essentially made Ferrari a shoo-in for the championship every year. That was until the 2005 regulations &#8212; which banned mid-race tyre changes &#8212; handed the advantage to Michelin in a big way.</p>
<p>2005 was the year when the tyre war well and truly jumped the shark. In the quest for the competitive edge, both companies had made their tyres softer and softer. The resurfaced banking at Indianapolis bit, Michelins exploded all over the shop and we were left with a farcical race in which only the six Bridgestone-shod cars competed.</p>
<p>On the back of the problems, the FIA decided that a sole company should supply the tyres for all the teams. The problem with this was that it had the potential to severely reduce the amount of exposure that tyre company got. With no tyre war to talk about, people might not talk about tyres. For this reason, Michelin refused to have any further part in F1.</p>
<p>The upshot was that Bridgestone and the FIA colluded to concoct the maddest new rules and gimmicks in order to contrive some interest in the tyres. One has to paint green lines all over the tyre in a crass attempt to pretend they care about the environment. Of course, the green on the tyres clashes with teams&#8217; liveries, making the scheme not only nonsensical, but also damn ugly.</p>
<p>Teams are also forced to use a sub-optimal tyre compound at some point during the race. While this may have superficially &#8220;spiced up&#8221; the action, it is artificial. Drivers are critical of it, and Fernando Alonso even said that he would rather race with wet tyres on a dry circuit.</p>
<p>Moreover, there is a sense that Bridgestone may have <em>deliberately</em> made their tyres behave strangely in an attempt to get drivers and teams discussing tyres with the media. <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/78957">Nick Heidfeld has said</a> that the tyres could be &#8220;ten times better&#8221;. <a href="http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2009/10/05/watch-out-robert-kubica-announcement/">Joe Saward expanded</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>The Bridgestones react differently on each car and finding the tricks that make them work is not easy. Some drivers can do it at some tracks and not at others. Even World Championship challenger Jenson Button has struggled with this&#8230;</p>
<p>Bridgestone seems to have concluded that it is better to have people talking about the tyres rather than not talking about them – even if a lot of the references are negative.</p></blockquote>
<p>I rejoiced when it was announced that a &#8220;control&#8221; tyre was to be brought in. But it has brought the wrong sort of control. I am not too sure that the current dark behaviour is an improvement over the honest competition of the tyre war.</p>
<p>If you have reached the stage where your marketing strategy is to have people make negative comments about your product, it probably is time to call it a day.</p>
<p>In many ways, Bridgestone get a huge amount of brand exposure through their involvement in F1. As noted in <a href="http://www.formula1blog.com/2009/11/03/podcast-131-abu-dhabi-review/">this week&#8217;s Formula1Blog.com podcast</a>, you simply cannot watch a Grand Prix without learning that Bridgestone supply the tyres. Yet, after thirteen seasons (fifteen by the time they leave), the marginal returns to their investment must surely have diminished to almost zero. And <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/11/02/bridgestone-to-make-surprise-f1-exit/">As Keith at F1 Fanatic has pointed out</a>, their costs are set to soar as they now have to supply twelve or thirteen teams rather than ten.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, it is a shock and a surprise that Bridgestone, a company that has stuck with F1 through thick and thin since 1997, has so abruptly pulled the plug. Now the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone will have a big headache trying to find someone to take Bridgestone&#8217;s place. With bridges burned with Goodyear and Michelin, and <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKL414181020091104">Pirelli uninterested</a>, options seem thin on the ground.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I love the Brazilian Grand Prix. It is a unique circuit &#8212; not only anti-clockwise, but uniquely short in the same way you might think of Spa-Francorchamps as being uniquely long.</p>
<p>It is also special because it has now comprehensively replaced Suzuka as the <em>proper</em> place to settle a World Championship, particularly due to its useful time slot. It is on prime time on European television. That is another unique aspect of Brazil, due to the lack of North American races this year.</p>
<p>So it was most fitting that Jenson Button managed to seal the deal in Interlagos, even when it seemed further out of his grasp than ever. A disastrous qualifying session sent us off the scent. The only saving grace was that Vettel&#8217;s was almost as bad. But his main rival Barrichello was on pole at his home race.</p>
<p>Unfortunately for Barrichello, he never gets any good luck at Interlagos, even when he is doing well. I will never forget the tragedy of his car breaking down in 1999 while he looked like he could win the race driving for Stewart. His bad luck struck again.</p>
<p>After a strong first stint which he led with relatively little challenge, he somehow managed to lose the plot by failing to push hard enough at the start of his second stint, handing the lead to Mark Webber. Later in the race came his tangle with Lewis Hamilton, which resulted in a puncture for Barrichello.</p>
<p>(Apparently Lewis Hamilton can&#8217;t go to Interlagos without having an eventful time. Hats off to him for ploughing his way up to a 3rd place finish from 17th on the grid.)</p>
<p>In normal circumstances, therefore, we would normally be talking about Mark Webber&#8217;s fabulous win. And Pink Peril was right to <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/10/19/congratulations-to-jenson-button-and-brawn-gp/#comment-5122">point it out</a> in the comments to <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2009/10/19/congratulations-to-jenson-button-and-brawn-gp/">my previous article</a>. Mark Webber did a great job &#8212; the one person who managed to do well in both qualifying and the race.</p>
<p>He certainly had a better weekend than the Red Bull driver who needed it, Vettel. It was suspected that Red Bull would do well <a href="http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2009/10/a-little-pointer-as-to-why-red-bull-will-be-quick-in-brazil/">thanks to the &#8220;testing&#8221; Webber was able to do at Suzuka</a>. Sadly we didn&#8217;t see much of Webber&#8217;s race because the television cameras were more focussed on the Championship protagonists.</p>
<p>As for the Championship winner, Jenson Button, I would say he had the race of his season &#8212; possibly even the race of his life. It really is as though his bad qualifying performance gave him the kick up the backside he needed. I read <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/oct/19/jenson-button-formula-one">one story</a> today which said that after his poor qualifying, he texted his mum to say, &#8220;Don&#8217;t worry mum, we&#8217;re going to kick some butt.&#8221; She replied, &#8220;Good, go and kick some butt.&#8221;</p>
<p>It was as though a barrier had been passed. Button was no longer defending his lead, as he had been since the start of the season. The tide had turned so far that he now had to attack to win. And attack he did!</p>
<p>His aggressive and ballsy driving was captivating to watch. He was already 9th by the end of lap one. Once the Safety Car period was over, he was ready to line up Romain Grosjean, and in the process took a risk by going round the outside. I thought Grosjean did a solid job when racing side-by-side for two or three corners against Button. Button put a lot of faith in the inexperienced Grosjean not to do something silly. But both came out of the fight looking good.</p>
<p>Within a lap, Button got past Kazuki Nakajima in a rather risky move at the Senna S. Several laps later, also into the Senna S, he finally got past Kamui Kobayashi who was in his first race. After that, as the pitstop strategies shook out, Button found himself looking good.</p>
<p>There has been some criticism of Kobayashi&#8217;s driving, particularly weaving in the braking zones. Certainly he pushed it too far later on in the race when he was involved in a high-speed accident with Nakajima. But his defensive driving against Button impressed me and suggests that Kobayashi has promise, even though he wasn&#8217;t particularly good in GP2 (like Nakajima).</p>
<p>While there was some decent racing going on for most of the race, the majority of the action came on the first lap which was rather crazy. My theory is that they just decided to do a Wacky Races thing because it was on prime time.</p>
<p>First there was the accident which brought an end to the races of Adrian Sutil, Jarno Trulli and Fernando Alonso. Alonso was so placid about it that the BBC&#8217;s commentators did not even notice him at first. He just trudged nonchalantly into his lift. I sense that he really has just been going through the motions, awaiting his big chance in a red car before exerting himself once again.</p>
<p>Little wonder Alonso went by unnoticed, because Jarno Trulli was running up to Sutil and gesticulated in quite a threatening manner. I am struggling to remember the last time I saw a driver so angry. It looked like it was going to turn into this sort of moment!</p>

<p>I am struggling to see what Trulli was so worked up about. Maybe Sutil could have left Trulli some more room, but I think Trulli was optimistic trying to overtake him there anyway. And it is not as if Sutil drove into Trulli. In fact, before Trulli loses control of his car you can see Sutil clearly make an attempt to steer <em>away</em> from Trulli to give him more space.</p>
<p>It was a racing incident in my book. But the accident that resulted was quite a high-speed one, which I guess is why Trulli was so rattled.</p>
<p>Then there was the pitlane fire, when Heikki Kovalainen drove off with the fuel hose still attached. It wasn&#8217;t Kovalainen&#8217;s fault &#8212; he was instructed to leave, but the fuel hose was still attached.</p>
<p>I really am confused as to why we get so many more of these incidents these days. I can&#8217;t remember ever seeing a driver leaving with his fuel hose still attached until Jenson Button did it at Imola in 2006. Since then there have been several, from Christijan Albers (who was effectively sacked for it), to Massa in Singapore last year and Alguersuari in Singapore this year, to Kovalainen now. And I&#8217;m sure there are one or two more that have slipped my mind.</p>
<p>The increasing frequency of these incidents is quite alarming, particularly when so much attention was given to Ferrari&#8217;s pit lane incidents in 2008. Surely teams and drivers must be more aware than ever of the possibility, and it is just bizarre that it keeps on happening over and over again now.</p>
<p>Massive, massive kudos to Kimi Räikkönen for driving through the fire which resulted from Kovalainen&#8217;s premature pit box exit. The fuel was more or less being sprayed into his face, and flames briefly exploded all around him. Yet he kept his foot down and kept driving.</p>
<p>After the race, he said his eyes were still burning! Yet he plodded on. As far as I&#8217;m concerned he could have been blinded by that sort of thing. He must have huge balls. And people say he doesn&#8217;t have motivation.</p>
<p>One last thing to mention &#8212; Robert Kubica. He finished 2nd, his best result of the season, after starting 8th. He had a great restart when the Safety Car pulled in &#8212; he was right on top of Nico Rosberg and passed as soon as he could. I am sorry that Kubica has not been able to show more of his talent this year. I hope Renault can build him the car he deserves.</p>
<p>Next we head to the brand new circuit in Abu Dhabi. The last time the Championship was decided before the final race of the season was in 2005. Then we were treated to one of the best Grands Prix there has ever been, the breathtaking 2005 Japanese Grand Prix. Maybe the same end-of-term atmosphere can spice up Abu Dhabi, which aside from the gimmicky pitlane exit looks like it will be another bland Tilke operation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>ITV showed that when it mattered, they could cover an unfolding event properly. Even though it was a low point for Formula 1, the 2005 United States Grand Prix was a high point for ITV&#8217;s coverage. When it became clear that there was a chance that the race would go ahead without the Michelin runners, ITV ripped up the running order and covered the unfolding scenario almost as though it was a rolling news channel.</p>
<p>When the Michelin runners pulled in at the end of the formation lap, ITV could easily have chosen to dump the coverage. Apparently, some channels around the world did. But ITV, to their credit, stuck with the race which was in a prime-time slot, knowing that what was happening was a huge story for Formula 1. The coverage itself was superb, striking just the right balance and bringing across to the viewer just what a farce it had become.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=James_Allen&#038;id=44470">As James Allen says</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Commentating on the ‘race’ was completely different from any other race, as the story was as much about how the situation had arisen, how the crowd was taking it and where the sport would go next as it was about race action.</p></blockquote>
<p>And <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=Ted_Kravitz&#038;id=44473">Ted Kravitz points out</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Open hostility amongst the teams, the drivers literally powerless, and us on ITV broadcasting a meaningless race with six cars and ripping into the product we were meant to be promoting: a business that had forgotten it should be a sport.</p></blockquote>
<p>That edition was nominated for a Bafta, but it didn&#8217;t win. Instead, ITV won Baftas for its coverage of the first race wins for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. In both instances, the coverage was not particularly good for a host of reasons <a href="http://doctorvee.co.uk/2007/05/22/itv-f1-wins-bafta-f1-fans-leave-country/">which I have</a> <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/04/20/itv-f1-wins-another-bafta-they-must-be-clueless/">outlined before</a>.</p>
<p>ITV pulled off a master-stroke by selecting Martin Brundle has Murray Walker&#8217;s co-commentator. By all accounts, Brundle was a revelation as a television presenter, apparently leaving producers agog at his seemingly natural talent in front of the camera. It is all the more impressive when you consider the fact that Martin Brundle didn&#8217;t even want to be with ITV &#8212; he was still after a race seat!</p>
<p>Martin Brundle&#8217;s gridwalks have been one of the few must-see aspects of ITV&#8217;s pre-race coverage. However, over time it has become more and more farcical, as Brundle was increasingly asked by producers to interview irrelevant celebrities, and drivers continually give him the cold shoulder.</p>
<p>Mind you, the gridwalk has provided one of ITV&#8217;s finest comedy moments.<br />

<p>It wasn&#8217;t the only time a potty-mouthed driver let rip on live television. One of the most memorable was Mark Webber being interviewed after Sebastian Vettel crashed into him at Fuji last year. Live on British breakfast television, he explained, &#8220;It&#8217;s just kids. They do a good job, then they fuck it all up!&#8221;</p>
<p>And in Australia 2008, David Coulthard actually threatened to kick &#8220;three colours of shit out of the little bastard&#8221; Felipe Massa.<br />

<p>In the background of that clip you can hear pundit Tony Jardine trying his hardest to stifle his laughter. The analyst was the only person other than Murray Walker to make the leap from the BBC to ITV in 1997, albeit in a different role (he was pitlane reporter at the Beeb). Tony Jardine remained with ITV until a few years ago. The decision to dispose of him in favour of Mark Blundell is one of the many questionable decisions that ITV have taken in recent years.</p>
<p>Simon Taylor used to work alongside Tony Jardine as pundit. He provided another comedy moment in 1997 when ITV inadvisedly presented the coverage for the Monaco Grand Prix from a yacht in the harbour. The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr8HGtOGuAY">boat bobbed up and down so much</a> that Simon Taylor was unable to broadcast because he became seasick! I think a few viewers probably felt a bit seasick as well. ITV opted to present its Monaco coverage from a balcony in later years.</p>
<p>Simon Taylor was less engaging as a pundit and did not feature in ITV&#8217;s coverage for long. In fact, looking at the <a href="http://www.itv-f1.com/Feature.aspx?Type=General&#038;id=44474">retrospective</a> on ITV&#8217;s own website, it is as though Tony Jardine and Simon Taylor never existed.</p>
<p>All-in-all, I think the story of ITV&#8217;s coverage since 1997 is one that started off earnestly but dropped off over the years. The decision to hire experienced and respected analysts like Tony Jardine and Simon Taylor along with Murray Walker was the right move. It kept the F1 purists happy.</p>
<p>It certainly made up for the decision to employ Jim Rosenthal, someone who had no interest in F1 at the start, as the show&#8217;s anchor. I thought Jim Rosenthal did a very good job considering his inexperience of F1, and I think his understanding of the sport was very good by the time he left ITV-F1 a few years ago.</p>
<p>It was clear that ITV was proud that it had F1 coverage in 1997. I recall that in the run-up to their first race in Australia, ITV broadcast an entire evening of F1-based programming including a one-off chat show presented by Clive James and featuring several drivers, and a showing of the classic film <i>Grand Prix</i>.</p>
<p>And check out the original title sequence. It is dark, mysterious, and classy &#8212; a complete world away from the cheese-fest that ITV-F1 has become.</p>

<p>Looking at some of ITV&#8217;s programmes from the early years, which can be easily found on YouTube, the tone of the programme is surprisingly different. The pace is slower, as though the coverage is being given room to breathe &#8212; very different from the frenetic Hamilton worshipping of later years.</p>
<p>Over the years, the best aspects of ITV&#8217;s coverage were stripped away one-by-one. Murray Walker&#8217;s retirement was a big blow which I don&#8217;t think ITV ever quite recovered from. While in the early years ITV hauled a dedicated studio around the world to present its track-side coverage from, more recently the poor presenters have been left shouting above the noise of engines in the pitlane &#8212; completely pointless.</p>
<p>The decision along the line to ditch its respected analysts in favour of the more populist Mark Blundell was questionable. And the general focus on light features and Hamilton-hype in the later years left a sour taste.</p>
<p>Having said that, F1 coverage has undoubtedly come on leaps and bounds. Occasional technical features fronted by Martin Brundle were excellent. And it has to be said that the hour-long build up that ITV typically offered was a tremendous commitment, even if all too often the post-race analysis was hurriedly wrapped up if the race was longer than expected (<i>i.e.</i> any time it rained, or any grand prix shown in prime time).</p>
<p>And you have to feel sorry in a way for ITV. When they picked up the F1 rights in 1996, they will have been expecting F1 to be on the cusp of a Damon Hill era, thereby guaranteeing British bums on seats. Unfortunately, the Damon Hill era fizzled out even more quickly than it began, as Hill drove for the hopelessly uncompetitive Arrows team in 1997. Then ITV had to suffer the ignominy of covering the dull years of Schumacher dominance and Ferrari dirty scheming.</p>
<p>So it&#8217;s worth saying thank you to ITV and North One for the work they have put into bringing F1 to our homes for the past twelve seasons. We complained about the adverts and James Allen, but they also brought F1 coverage in the UK to a new level and the BBC have been given a tough act to follow.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As well as <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/11/06/the-career-of-david-coulthard/">David Coulthard&#8217;s career</a>, the Brazilian Grand Prix brought down the curtain on another fixture of Formula 1 life. ITV broadcast their last grand prix before Formula 1 moves back to the BBC for 2009 onwards.</p>
<p>ITV&#8217;s first race was way back in 1997, the Australian Grand Prix. &#8220;Do not adjust your sets,&#8221; said anchor Jim Rosenthal. &#8220;This <em>is</em> Formula 1 on ITV.&#8221; My recollection is hazy. I was just 10 at the time. I had begun watching Formula 1 in 1995 or 1996, right at the tail end of the BBC&#8217;s F1 coverage.</p>
<p>Up until that point, Formula 1 was only ever shown on the BBC and in a lot of ways it was unthinkable for the sport to move over to commercial television. The first BBC Grand Prix was broadcast in 1976 &#8212; on a circuit that, albeit radically altered, is still used by F1 today: Fuji.</p>
<p>Their last grand prix was also in Japan, at Suzuka in 1996. For the occasion, they put together a package that really highlighted just how much of the history of Formula 1 &#8212; both good and bad &#8212; the BBC had brought to British homes over the years.</p>

<p>At the time, the downside of Formula 1 moving to ITV was obvious: the constant commercial breaks. This was a sad reality of Formula 1 coverage on ITV, and there was no use in complaining about it. For as long as F1 was on ITV, it was going to be interrupted by adverts.</p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t make the pill any less bitter though. It has been <a href="http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2008/10/29/itv-f1-goodbye-or-good-riddance/">estimated by Keith Collantine</a> that over the course of its 206 grands prix, ITV took enough commercial breaks to miss 31 races&#8217; worth of action &#8212; almost two entire seasons. The number of important events that ITV missed are almost too countless to mention. Lewis Hamilton&#8217;s gearbox failure in Brazil 2007, Michael Schumacher&#8217;s engine blowing in Suzuka 2006 and the infamous incident when ITV interrupted an intense battle between Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher in the final few laps at Imola 2005 are just a few examples from recent years.</p>
<p>Once, ITV even opted not to show the United States Grand Prix live on ITV1, shifting it to the digital-only ITV2. This was in the pre-Freeview era, at a time when digital television viewers were very much in a minority. The decision to leave F1 fans in the lurch like this was a real slap in the face. Thankfully, ITV never repeated this stunt with any other race, although a good few qualifying sessions have been shown on digital-only channels over the years.</p>
<p>The adverts were not the only issue people had with ITV&#8217;s coverage. The obsession with Lewis Hamilton was almost suffocating. Their previous fixation with Jenson Button was more muted, but more ridiculous since Button was not even a fraction as good as Hamilton.</p>
<p>Other elements of the &#8216;pre-race show&#8217; were also criticised for their light nature. Cooking with Heikki Kovalainen, anyone? Then there were the countless tedious reports about &#8220;glamorous&#8221; events.</p>
<p>The commentary has been another focal point for criticism. James Allen is a good writer (I&#8217;m a big fan of his book about Michael Schumacher, <i>The Edge of Greatness</i>). He was also good as a pitlane reporter. However, his commentary grated with many, including me.</p>
<p>There is no doubt that it is a tough job, and some of the sheer vitriol that was written about James Allen by some people was not justified. But I never understood why ITV did not give another commentator (such a Ben Edwards) a chance given that the unpopularity of James Allen was so widespread.</p>
<p>Then there is Ted Kravitz, who is an excellent journalist. But too often he got over-excited in the heat of the moment and sometimes regressed into stating the obvious. He was never too far from saying something like, &#8220;They&#8217;re putting on some new tyres. And, is that?&#8230; YES, some fuel is going in as well.&#8221; It is fair to say that when Murray Walker retired, the quality of ITV&#8217;s coverage took a step backward.</p>
<p>ITV&#8217;s coverage was not all bad though. There is no doubt that Formula 1 coverage in the UK has come on leaps and bounds since ITV gained the rights in 1997. It is worth remembering that the BBC did not even show qualifying often until its last few years of coverage. In this respect, ITV has fewer blots on its copybook, although I don&#8217;t doubt that the BBC would have moved in a similar direction. After all, broadcasting in general has changed a lot over the past twelve years.</p>
<p>In its final moments, I felt that ITV were pretty open about the shortfalls of their coverage. Steve Rider wrapped up the highlights of the Brazilian Grand Prix saying, &#8220;no more awkward commercial breaks&#8221;. I can only imagine the embarrassment that the producers must have felt whenever something important happened during a commercial break.</p>
<p>James Allen has also responded to his critics, saying:</p>
<blockquote><p>I was always pretty confident that when Murray decided to retire I would get the gig, but never anything less than utterly self-critical and seeking to improve with every race and every year, which I think I’ve done.</p>
<p>It’s a very difficult and high-pressure job, because with 20 cars there are 20 different points of focus&#8230;</p>
<p>Of course there are many people at home in their armchairs who think they could do it better and one of the challenges for me was that I replaced Murray just as the internet opened up to allow everyone to have their say in chat rooms and forums.</p>
<p>But I know from market research and viewer feedback that the pros massively outnumber the vocal minority of cons.</p></blockquote>
<p>Despite the criticisms though, I think overall ITV and North One can be proud of what they have done over the past twelve seasons. Tomorrow I will look at some of my memories from ITV&#8217;s coverage over the years.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A story has <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/71532">appeared on Autosport.com this morning</a> which reports on some comments that Alan Donnelly made in Italian sports newspaper <i>Gazzetta dello Sport</i>. In it, the FIA&#8217;s man in the steward&#8217;s room and known Max Mosley lackey attempted to rebut claims that the FIA is biased in favour of Ferrari.</p>
<p>What I find interesting is that the example he uses to &#8220;rebut&#8221; the theory is exactly the same example used by Max Mosley in a recent <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7657298.stm">interview with the BBC</a>. This suggests that the FIA is now running a coordinated campaign in order to re-establish its credibility as governing body.</p>
<p>It sorely needs that campaign. With the multitude of increasingly bizarre penalties handed out throughout this season, trust in the FIA&#8217;s systems have taken a hammer-blow. The only thing that has become clear  this season is that there is no way of knowing what will get punished and what won&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Fans no longer trust the FIA, as you will see by dropping in to any blog or message board. Many in the media no longer trust the FIA&#8217;s stewards. Increasingly, <a href="http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/71436">drivers are calling for urgent changes</a> to be made to the stewarding system. Teams have decided that enough is enough and have formed FOTA to counter the FIA&#8217;s madness. And yesterday, <a href="http://www.crash.net/motorsport/f1/news/170653-0/bernie_we_cant_punish_every_little_thing.html">even Bernie Ecclestone slammed some of the penalties</a> recently handed out by the FIA.</p>
<p>It looks like the only people who have any trust in the FIA any more are the FIA themselves. And any government that has lost the trust of everyone is clearly no longer fit for purpose. Now, the FIA is erratically throwing out increasingly bizarre ideas to change the face of F1 from tip to toe. Many of the changes, most notably a standardised engine, are completely antithetical to the idea of grand prix motor racing as we have all grown to know it, and Max Mosley&#8217;s vision of F1 is sure to alienate most fans.</p>
<p>It is a sign of the mismanagement and desperation of the poisonous and discredited little man at the top Max Mosley. He should have left his post after the Indygate debacle in 2005 when Max Mosley, in consort with Jean Todt, refused to compromise to allow the race go ahead. Since then, Max Mosley has never had my favour and the events of this year have further underlined my feelings.</p>
<p>Earlier this year, at the height of the sex scandal, he promised that he would step down at the end of his term next year. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/06/06/thoughts-on-max-mosley-and-the-fia-at-last/">But as I noted at the time</a>, he promised to resign in 2004 then changed his mind. True enough, the signs now are that he will continue on as FIA President. It is clear that he only promised to resign to help him get through the General Assembly vote. This makes him a liar. What a terrible person to have in such a powerful position.</p>
<p>Let us not forget that <a href="http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns19972.html">at the end of last season</a>, the well-respected permanent steward Tony Scott Andrews left the role which had been seen as a relative success. In his place, a new consultant to the stewards was appointed. That man was Mosley&#8217;s mate Alan Donnelly. Donnelly&#8217;s company, Sovereign Strategy, based in an FIA-owned building, used to list Ferrari as one of its clients on its website. The Ferrari name <a href="http://www.sidepodcast.com/2008/01/25/fia-revise-f1-stewards-process/">mysteriously disappeared</a> when Donnelly was appointed in his new role.</p>
<p>Mosley and Donnelly are now trotting out the following &#8220;proof&#8221; of why the FIA is not biased in favour of Ferrari:</p>
<blockquote><p>You just need one example to debunk that theory: at Monaco the stewards noticed that on Raikkonen&#8217;s F2008 the wheels had not been fitted before the three-minute mark as allowed in the regulations. So the stewards penalised Kimi with a drive-through in a track where you can&#8217;t overtake.</p></blockquote>
<p>That would be an inadequate argument anyway, <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/10/08/mosley-misses-the-point-about-ferrari-international-assistance-jibes/">as I already wrote</a> when Mosley came out with it on the BBC. But it is even worse than that. <a href="http://vee8.doctorvee.co.uk/2008/10/08/mosley-misses-the-point-about-ferrari-international-assistance-jibes/#comment-2211">As Don Speekingleesh pointed out in the comments</a>, the Sporting Regulations clearly state that such an infraction should actually result in a driver starting <em>from the back of the grid</em>.</p>
<p>Article 38.5 of the <a href="http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/475632E46002BEDAC125744F004312F4/$FILE/F1.SPORTING.REGULATIONS.19-05-2008.pdf">Sporting Regulations</a> (PDF link) states:</p>
<blockquote><p>When the three minute signal is shown all cars must have their wheels fitted, after this signal wheels may only be removed in the pit lane or on the grid during a race suspension.</p>
<p>Any car which does not have all its wheels fully fitted at the three minute signal must start the race from the back of the grid or the pit lane. Under these circumstances a marshal holding a yellow flag will prevent the car (or cars) from leaving the grid until all cars able to do so have left to start the formation lap.</p></blockquote>
<p>It would be funny if it wasn&#8217;t so pathetic. Alan Donnelly&#8217;s own &#8220;proof&#8221; that the FIA is not biased in favour of Ferrari actually appears to <em>support</em> of the conspiracy theory. It is clear that, according to the letter of the rules, Kimi Raikkonen should have started the race from the back of the grid. As it was, with just the drive-through penalty he never fell lower than 6th before crashing into Adrian Sutil.</p>
<p>What a mess the FIA is in. It is no wonder stewards&#8217; decisions are so erratic and unpredictable. The FIA do not even appear to know what their own rules are. This is shown in the FIA&#8217;s embarrassingly wrong-footed attempts to debunk the Ferrari International Assistance theory. What a cock-up.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I was in Dundee overnight to see some school friends. I have to mention this in my blog, otherwise I would probably be harassed until I did. It&#8217;s only the second time I&#8217;ve been since university started. I expected to be visiting Dundee much more often. But by the end of the week, the last thing I want to see is another train.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t like Dundee very much either. At best it just seems like such a mediocre city; at worst it&#8217;s just downright depressing. And sleeping on the floor, that&#8217;s another thing I&#8217;m not a big fan of. Last night, though, I slept on two chairs facing each other &#8212; I was the bridge. More comfortable than it sounds, although I did wake up a few times with aching somethingorothers.</p>
<p>My needs to watch the Formula 1 qualifying were &#8212; by and large &#8212; met aswell. And what an exciting session!</p>
<p>At the party there was this guy who was impressed with the fact that I call this year &#8216;twenty oh five&#8217;. Apparently it&#8217;s the first time he&#8217;s ever heard it. I&#8217;m definitely not the only person in the world who says it. I see no reason to say &#8216;two thousand and five&#8217; &#8212; it&#8217;s a waste of a syllable.</p>
<p>Say 1905 for instance. You don&#8217;t say &#8216;one thousand nine hundred and five&#8217; &#8212; you say &#8216;nineteen oh five&#8217;. So why say &#8216;two thousand and five&#8217;?</p>
