Paul -- To be fair to Delicious, there is a 'network' feature which more or less does the trick. I just wish they would do more with it.

Adopted Domain -- I definitely see the potential in a TweetDeck-style app for Delicious. The idea came to me while I was thinking about this post, and I'm surprised no-one has built one yet.

Matt -- That is a good point. Definitely, if you want to share something with a lot of people quickly, Twitter is the way to go. But if you want to keep an archive of links, forget Twitter. I'll reply to your email tomorrow.

>So is Twitter doing the job of sharing interesting links better than Delicious,

Today, yes. Not tomorrow.

One key difference is that Twitter has no easy to use "memory".

Great post. I hadn't really thought about the two sites that way. Funnily enough, this morning I was just trying to search through my own tweets for something I posted ages ago and I couldn't find it easily. On delicious that would have taken seconds. However, I'm surprised more hasn't been made of delicious feeds. A Tweetdeck for delicious must surely be possible and I know I'd be interested in it.

It's rare that I remember to check the latest links sitting in the 'my network' bit on delicious but when I do there's always good stuff in there. Some of it from you - so don't quit delicious.

I think you hit the nail on the head there - for a social bookmarking site, del.icio.us is not very social. Twitter and Facebook concentrate on the social and let the user think about the content. del.icio.us started with the content and is limited by it.

If you are seeking links from like minded people, how do you go about that on del.icio.us ? Can't see a way.

But you find like minded people on twitter and the links + other stuff flow.

Keith, I think you're right. I think it's the immediacy that appeals in the case of Twitter. If you want to keep an archive of links, Delicious is much better.

Sahra, thanks for your comment. But that's only if you subscribe to, in my case, the <code>via:doctorvee</code> tag isn't it? It's not there automatically. So it basically acts the same as any other tag. Surely they could do something a bit more special with it.

Delicious eventually did pick up on the via:username convention - though it has to be said they didn't do a lot with it. If you click on 'Subscriptions' in the menu below your name you're presented with all the links someone has said they got via you.

At the moment I have a kind of tiered approach.

I bookmark pretty much everything on Delicious, because it's the best way of getting stuff onto the blog.

If I've found something particularly good or new then I'll add it to StumbleUpon.

Stuff I share on Twitter tends to be time-sensitive or just good old-fashioned curiosities.

It's horses for courses. But I expect we'll see a contraction in social media and people will head to the services that work best for them. I wonder how many new signups Bebo gets compared to Facebook these days...
