Something looks different

3 June 2007 09:00

Just a few words about the changes at Scottish Roundup, which I said I would put here to stop it from cluttering up the roundup.

I don’t think the changes are too radical, so nothing should have broken on it. Though there is always that chance that something will have broken, so if you see something that doesn’t seem to be working correctly please let me know.

It looks best in Firefox (of course!) but I’ve also looked at it in Opera and Internet Explorer 7 (all for Windows Vista) and there don’t appear to be any major issues. Just general IE ugliness.

Any feedback on the design? I know I sometimes like the odd “robust” blog design, but I think I have restrained myself pretty well this time round while still putting my own twist in it. As I said, I’ve not made many radical changes to the default WordPress theme. But at least it does not look exactly like the default theme. It now looks like its own blog, and not the same as a million others!

I have made the byline quite big, which I realise looks a bit odd. I made it that way because I wanted to give guest editors a decent plug. But I’m not sure if it works, what with it being tagged on at the end of the line.

Do you think that ‘nominate’ form looks alright in the sidebar? It’s a bit weird to have there, but I think it just about works. If it encourages more people to nominate posts then it will be worth the weirdness.

I’ve also made a change to the favicon (in case you didn’t know, that’s the little 16×16 icon that appears in your browser’s address bar). The old “Sc” favicon was a bit rubbish, and was always going to be a stopgap solution until I came up with a better one.

Scottish Roundup favicon But you will notice that it hasn’t changed much. But what with it sitting in my bookmarks toolbar for the entire duration of my web browsing, I came to notice that cropping it correctly would allow it to look a bit like a stylised Saltire, maybe, slightly, if you squint a bit. So with a couple of changes, there we have it.

I like the look of the blog – but I didn’t see it before so I’m not able to comment as to whether the changes are better or worse!

The favicon is pretty cool, I had even thought it looked a bit like a saltire before I read that that was the look you were hoping for!

Although I’m a fellow Scotsman, I’m not overly interested in the political stuff you cover on your other site, but I fully enjoy reading what you have to say on this blog – especially the F1 stuff, but the rest is very good too.

I’ve just started my own blog and I’m kinda finding my feet on what to say and how to make the thing look good, so I’m scouring other blogs for hints and tips! You obviously put a lot of time, effort and thought into your blog and it’s contents which you are hopefully rewarded for by having a great readership.

    Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your kind comments Craig! And thanks for the links you have given to my blog as well. :) I subscribed to your blog’s RSS feed, so I will be keeping an eye on it.

I didn’t realise you were a Scot. Even though Scottish Roundup is focussed on politics, the odd non-political entry is featured. As I said, I’ll keep an eye on your blog!

Richard, Thanks for letting me know. I think that’s all major stumbling blocks covered.
