Yes, I can remember a lot of talk about Franchitti moving to F1 about five or seven years ago. I seem to remember that Jordan were interested as well. I guess it just wasn’t to be.

Well Dario deserved a crack at F1 based on his talent, alas, not to be. Before Champs fall from grace he was a front runner, finishing 2nd to Montoya in his championship year. When Team Green bailed to the IRL he didn’t really get much say in it. The dived world of Amercan Open Wheel is a nightmare.

He did test for Jaguar (when run by Bobby Rahal) but was a victim of team politics & never got a chance. Montoya stated publicly that Dario was F1 material.

I think there’s two problems with US open wheel racing. Yes, there’s the Champ Car-IRL schism which has all but killed the sport.

But also there’s the fact that both championships have become spec series which has damaged the spectacle – as the commenter on my blog rightly pointed out.

I was delighted for Franchitti but it’s always disappointing to see an Indy 500 rained out.
