It's not a matter of wanting to exclude certain people from voting. But as I've said, if so many voters can't be bothered to read simple instructions or get informed about how to use their vote (and the Holyrood system hasn't ever changed; only the design of the ballot paper has), you've really got to wonder what they're doing in the polling booth in the first place.

You have it the wrong way round. You tailor a system to the people, not the people to the system. There is nothing sacred about the system. And if the system isn`t working, you find the fault and fix it.

Call me simple, but I don`t see much difference between wanting to exclude the stupid (not as bright as me) and the ignorant (not as well informed as me). It`s the same principle of getting rid of the opinions of those you see as your inferiors.

They certainly have the right. But if they walk into the polling place then squander that right -- when the changes were well publicised -- what are you supposed to do?

The election was a bit more complicated than it had to be, but it was not difficult to understand. I'm exasperated by the fact that most of the spoilt ballots came not in the supposedly complicated (actually, literally as easy as 1-2-3) STV system, but in the Holyrood system which has been in use ever since the Scottish Parliament was established.

Yes, even not-so-smart people have the right to vote. If someone is (not stupid but) ignorant, why are they voting (i.e. imposing their choice on other people)?

I can see the view spreading fast that a complicated ballot paper is all right really as it provides a filter to remove the opinions of those who can`t cope with it - seen as an non-intellectual underclass who should probably be denied the franchise anyway on the grounds that we`re so much smarter than them. Maybe people who feel that way should rethink their concept of democracy....or admit that they are opposed to universal suffrage. Everyone - even the guy who never really got to grips with reading - has the right to say how he thinks his country should be run. Or don`t you agree?

Hmm, I dunno. I don't think that the SNP are going to swallow the Lib Dems' 'No referendum on independence' proviso.

Mind you, I wouldn't be surprised if the LDs drop that one quick smart if it means a chance at a coalition.
