Two different versions of that blasted book meme have been “passed on” to me. By Vicky of thehighrise and Garry of A Big Stick and a Small Carrot. So I’d better explain myself.

I don’t read story books.

Update: Mind you, I’ve got a bit of spare time at the moment, what with it being the summer holidays and all, so I’m willing to give it a go. I’ve never found that book that’s attracted my interest caught my imagination. Something weird you know, not simply one that takes three paragraphs to describe how a character takes a sip of water, all the time trying to use the longest, most pretentious words in the lexicon.

  1. Get thee down to the library! If you want weird then there’s the beat writers (Bukowski, Kerouac, Hunter S Thompson, Burroughs, Bret Easton Ellis et al) or perhaps Kafka if you’re feeling adventurous.

I haven’t read much 21st century fiction (apart from Neal Stephenson who is a bit of a techy), primarily because I’m stuck in a time warp – so I’ve no recommendations if the thought of reading yet another book about drugged-up hippies makes you gag – but I’m sure there’s some great stuff out there.

  2. …and by crikey, comment submission has really sped up! Hurrah!

  3. Cool, thanks, I’ll probably look into them then.

Good news about comment submission aswell! I assume it’s to do with the fact that I got rid of Spam Karma. It does mean that I have to check a moderation tray every so often, but it seems to be paying off.

  4. If you want weird, you could do worse than Vurt by Jeff Noon. Bit techie, bit experimental, weird music scene, v weird landscape, slightly disturbing. A bit like Burroughs with electronic music.

  5. Haha, wow. That description sounds pretty cool. I’ll look into that one.
