Sorry to be going on about Autechre again. It must bore those of you who don’t like Autechre, which is probably a great majority. But it’s all I’m interested in at the moment. The album release is now less than a week away.

There’s another interview with Sean Booth, and this one is much better. Here’s the interesting bit.

Do you notice when chinks of your influence appear in the mainstream in diluted formats? Radiohead incorporated subtle Autechre like textures for example.

“They’re honest about it. They’re really up-front about it. They’re like ‘oh we like Autechre’. I’m feeling that approach, even though I don’t really like their stuff that much, I’d rather that they were up-front about it, because there’s other people who are way more parasitic. They’ve taken elements of what we’ve done, and what Aphex has done, and they’ve kind of made this weird pop out of it. And they’re not lying about it. They asked us to tour with them as well. Nice to think that someone who’s got a pop sensibility could even consider your shit worthy. Because it’s like an outsider coming in and saying, ‘I like your shit’. I’d rather listen to that [Radiohead] than Funkstörung, put it that way. Any day.”

Ahah! I’m not sure about the way he doesn’t see Autechre as pop though. I didn’t consider Confield to be a pop album, but I’d describe just about everything else they’ve done as pop. But I’m kind of liberal with my interpretation of that word.

I once said that I thought their previous album, Draft 7.30, would be perfect on cassette. Perhaps it’s because I recorded IV VV IV VV VIII off the radio onto a C90. So the first dozen-or-so times I heard it it was with the hiss, noise and slight muffle that comes with cassettes. And it sounded great! I saw WarpMart selling Draft 7.30 promo cassettes out of the corner of my eye — for only a fiver! I couldn’t resist. This is the first time I’ve bought the same album twice. I hope I’m not going to become a sad completist…
