Blogroll policy

8 December 2004 14:07

Well, all this setting-up-a-new-blog nonsense has got me thinking about blogging. Something I’ve been thinking about recently is the blogroll. There are now well over 100 blogs in it, so getting added to it doesn’t seem particularly special. You’re right. Infact, many blogrolls are like that, and I’m not exactly sure what people use them for.

I’ll explain what mine is for. Do people actually click the links on it?

It’s more of a token of appreciation than anything else. I’m saying, “Hey, I read your blog, and I’ve seen at least one interesting post on it.” Not all blogs I read go on the blogroll though. You can check out my Kinja digest and my Bloglines subscriptions for any I might have left off my blogroll.

Hopefully my real appreciation of blogs is reflected in the links I make in actual posts.

But I decided the size of the blogroll was getting out of hand, so I’ve decided to separate a ‘top ten’, to show where the proper excellent blogs are. Readers now have a significantly higher chance of finding an excellent blog when they look at my blogroll now…

Below the fold I’ll explain why I’ve chosen some of them.

  • Chase me ladies, I’m in the cavalry is like no other blog I’ve ever seen! Where does he get that style from? Hilarious, fantastic, and all sorts of other good words.
  • Europhobia is a very interesting political blog from a Eurosceptic turned pro-European. It certainly seems to have made its mark in a short space of time.
  • Harry’s Place. As somebody who was against the war in Iraq (a “stopper” if you must), Harry’s Place has been at times a challenging read. It might get boring sometimes, but in the end it’s indispensible.
  • Recess Monkey. With apologies to Guido Fawkes and Honourable Fiend. Recess Monkey’s blog makes Westminster sound just like school, which, for some reason, makes me very very happy.
  • UK Future is a Conservative blog which seems to have its feet on the ground. It sets its own agenda aswell, which is fantastic if other bloggers are obsessed with something boring at the moment.
  • [ random acts of alex ] seems to have all the most interesting links.

One thing blog rolling does is increase your Google Page rank I’d imagine by having more links pointing towards your site. Btw this comments window is messed up and I can’t see the last dozen or so words I typed.

Should be sorted now. I don’t know how different resolutions will cope with this, but hopefully it should be okay.

Everyone’s switching over to WordPress now, aren’t they? And should you ever get a spare few hours, they’re easily wasted looking at all the different plugin options and wondering just what you might want some of them for.

As well as Google pagerank, permalinks also affect your ranking on the Ecosystem if you’re into mindless popularity contests, like me.

Ooooh! Top ten, eh? Ta very much. Do you want links updated now, or when you’ve got it up and running properly?

Or have you got it up and running properly already, and I’ve just made a huge faux pas?

By the by, what exactly is the advantage of this WordPress thing? I’m on Blogger purely because I didn’t realise there were any other blog hosts out there, and I don’t really want to waste any money on what is rapidly become a very time-consuming hobby. I’m still somewhat new at all this, after all… As I keep getting locked out when I want to post an alternative may be nice.

Well, it’ll probably never be finished in a way, I’d say it is finished now in that my old blog now doesn’t exist. Please link away!

The real reason I moved over to Wordpress from Blogger was because I was fed up with Blogger being down and losing posts all the time. And it’s got stuff like trackback and blogrolling which were more difficult on Blogger. You don’t have to republish your blog when you make a change either; it does it all automatically. have a look here if you want more…

I was also unsure about spending money on it. I thought, should I really be spending loads of money on something which is just, at the end of the day, a pretty spoddy hobby? But I managed to get my own webspace for a good deal cheaper than I expected.
